AB - In recent years, versatile peroxidase (VP) has emerged as a promising enzyme for biotechnological applications, as it can oxidize lignin without the external mediators. To gain insights into the breakdown process of artificial lignin by VP, reaction between the two was studied. Degradation products were fractionated using ultrafiltration and analyzed by RP- high performance liquid chromatography with mass detection (HPLC-MS) chromatography. Four fractions were obtained based on their molecular sizes: >10, 3–10, 1–3, and <1 kDa. Interestingly, while VP did not significantly alter the yields of these fractions, the chromatograms revealed the presence of oligomers with different molecular weights (MWs) resulting from the enzymatic activity. The VP exhibits a dual role in its enzymatic activity: both degrading and synthesizing these oligomers. This was confirmed by principal component analysis (PCA). The positive correlations were found between certain oligomers (D1 and D2, D5 and D6, as well as between D7, D10, T2, and T4), suggesting their simultaneous degradation. On the other hand, a negative correlation was found between the monomer and some oligomers (D7, D10, T2, and T4), indicating the decomposition of these oligomers into monomers. These findings shed light on the intricate interplay between VP and artificial lignin, offering valuable insights for potential applications in lignin valorization.

AB - In nature, woody substrates are usually degraded by entire communities of microorganisms, which are nowadays jeopardised by anthropogenic influence, making it important to define the functional specificity of every species. Two strains of autochthonous fungi from Serbian lowland forests (Pleurotus ostreatus Ser1 and Cyclocybe aegerita Ser1) have been investigated for their ability to degrade lignin substrates [oak sawdust, oak isolated cell walls, and synthetic dehydrogenative polymer (DHP)]. Measuring the activities of the enzymes involved in lignin degradation was coupled with detecting the HPLC profile of the phenolics in the fungal growth media, and the lignin loss. While Pleurotus ostreatus Ser1 appeared highly effective within a very short time span, Cyclocybe aegerita Ser1 failed to degrade lignin. This situation was supported by very high enzyme activities and the low presence of phenolics in the media of Pleurotus ostreatus Ser1, compared to very low enzyme activity and the high presence of phenolics in the media with Cyclocybe aegerita Ser1.

AB - In this study, luminescence and antibacterial behavior of pure fluorapatite (FAp) and praseodymium-
nitrate-carbonate co-doped fluorapatite (PrNCFAp) nanopowders were investigated.
Uniform nanopowders were synthesized by precipitation reaction followed by
centrifugation and systematically characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM–EDS, TG and PL
methods. XRD analysis revealed the formation of hexagonal FAp crystals, and FTIR spectra
indicate the presence of nitrate (
NO3
−) and carbonate (
CO3
2−) species. SEM analyzes
confirm agglomerates composed of irregular nanometer-sized spheres. Emission of FAp
nanopowder occurred in the violet-blue region of the visible part of the spectrum, with
redshift to the blue-green color region when Pr3+,
NO3
− and CO3
2− co-doped in the lattice.
Analysis of luminescence spectra by MCR-ALS method extract three fluorophores from
the PrNCFAp sample and showed simultaneous existents of emission-reabsorption-emission
between dopants in FAp lattice. Antibacterial activity against pathogen Staphylococcus
aureus was investigated before and after treatment of nanopowders by UVA radiation
of 365 nm. Nanopowders irradiated with UVA compared to non-irradiated reduced Staphylococcus
aureus by 84.9% for PrNCFAp and 33.3% for FAp in the first 0.5 h of contact, and
76.1% and 42.9% after 24 h of contact. In addition, the obtained luminescent nanomaterials
showed a low degree of hemolytic activity and could potentially be candidates for further
research in dentistry.

AB - Controlled drug delivery systems are of great interest in modern science and medicine. This study was oriented towards encapsulation of synthetic lignin (DHP) into alginate beads and investigation of its release kinetic. Encapsulation was achieved by the ionotropic gelation method. In vitro release profiles were fitted into four release kinetic models (zero-order, first-order, Higuchi, and Korsmeyer-Peppas). According to the in vitro release, data alginate beads showed initial burst release followed by prolonged release. The best correlation was found for the Korsmeyer-Peppas model (R2 = 0.948), with an n value lower than 0.43, indicating the DHP transport mechanism was controlled by quasi-Fickian diffusion. This delivery system could be promising for chronic wound care and antibacterial treatment.

AB - Salata (Lactuca sativa L.) je jednogodišnja biljka, sa umerenimzahtevima prema faktorima spoljašnje sredine, kratkim vegetacionimperiodom i mogućnošću gajenja tokom cele godine. Ogledi sa šestgenotipova salate (‘Kiribati’, ‘Murai’, ‘Aquino’, ‘Gaugin’, ‘Aleppo’,‘Carmesi’) bili su postavljeni u kompaniji Iceberg Salat Centar. Biljke sugajene u plasteniku, bez dodatnog grejanja, tokom tri uzastopne sezone(jesen, zima i proleće), primenom mikrobioloških đubriva (EM Aktiv,Vital Tricho i njihova kombinacija). Cilj ovog istraživanja je bio da seutvrdi uticaj genotipa, mikrobioloških đubriva i sezone na sadržaj ukupnorastvorljivih materija i organskih kiselina. Najveću vrednost ukupnorastvorljivih materija i organskih kiselina ostvarila je crvena sorta ‘Murai‘u zimskom ogledu primenom đubriva Vital Tricho i EM Aktiv redom.

AB - The principal sesquiterpene lactones (lactucin, lactucopicrin, and its dihydro forms), known as contributors to bitter taste, were measured in green and red coloured lettuce using Ultra-performance liquid chromatography. Six lettuce cultivars (‘Kiribati’, ‘Murai’, ‘Aquino’, ‘Gaugin’, ‘Aleppo’ and ‘Carmesi’) were grown in a greenhouse experiment using microbiological fertilisers (EM Aktiv, Vital Tricho, and their combination) during three successive growing seasons (autumn, winter, and spring). The major sesquiterpene lactone was lactucopicrin with the highest level found in cultivar ‘Carmesi’ (0.65 mg/g dry weight) in autumn with the combination of fertilisers. The concentrations of lactucin, dihydrolactucin and dihydrolactucopicrin ranged from 0.001-0.085, 0.003-0.015, and 0.001-0.056 mg/g dry weight, respectively, and were not found in all lettuce samples. Generally, red cultivars showed higher content of lactones compared to green. Application of Vital Tricho and the combination of fertilisers led to an increased level of lactucopicrin, in some cultivars, in the range of 77-800% compared to unfertilised plants. Higher levels of lactucopicrin were found in the autumn trial compared to spring and winter. The present study suggests that genotype, fertilisers and season jointly affected the quantity of sesquiterpene lactones with emphasis on Vital Tricho, and/or the combination of fertilisers.

AB - In this preliminary study, we applied the Multivariate Curve Resolution- Alternating Least Squares (MCR-ALS) method to analyze the excitation-emission matrices of multifloral honey samples, combined with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to estimate infection of honey bee colonies with N. ceranae or V. destructor. Fluorescence spectroscopy combined with MCR-ALS was used to determine the ratio of the spectral components originating from proteins (C1) and phenolics (C2), two minor but essential constituents of honey, as a ratiometric indicator of infection level in related hives. The C1/C2 ratio decreased linearly with the increase of infection in both N. ceranae and V. destructor cases, the R (2) was 0.941 and 0.912, respectively. Additionally, DSC has shown that the magnitude of changes in sugar environments of the honey samples, reflected in sugar phase transitions, rises with increasing infection level in bee colonies. These results indicate that fluorescence combined with MCR-ALS could be used for rapid, non-destructive and cheap screening of honey to estimate the level of infection of honey bee colonies.

AB - Cereal seeds safety may be compromised by the presence of toxic contaminants, such as aflatoxins.
Besides being carcinogenic, they have other adverse health effects on humans and animals. In
this preliminary study, we used two non-invasive optical techniques, optical fiber fluorescence
spectroscopy and multispectral imaging (MSI), for discrimination of maize seeds naturally
contaminated with aflatoxin B1
(
AFB1) from the uncontaminated seeds. The AFB1-
contaminated
seeds exhibited a red shift of the emission maximum position compared to the control samples.
Using linear discrimination analysis to analyse fluorescence data, classification accuracy of 100%
was obtained to discriminate uncontaminated and AFB1-
contaminated seeds. The MSI analysis
combined with a normalized canonical discriminant analysis, provided spectral and spatial patterns
of the analysed seeds. The AFB1-
contaminated seeds showed a 7.9 to 9.6-fold increase in the seed
reflectance in the VIS region, and 10.4 and 12.2-fold increase in the NIR spectral region, compared
with the uncontaminated seeds. Thus the MSI method classified successfully contaminated from
uncontaminated seeds with high accuracy. The results may have an impact on development of
spectroscopic non-invasive methods for detection of AFs presence in seeds, providing valuable
information for the assessment of seed adulteration in the field of food forensics and food safety.

AB - BACKGROUND Aflatoxin B-1 (AFB(1)) is the most dangerous of the mycotoxins that contaminate cereal seeds naturally. A stress lignin formation is linked with the accumulation of reactive oxygen species causing a change in the redox status and formation of stable organic radicals, constituting the first layer of defense. The relationship between AFB(1) and changes in lignin organic free radicals in seeds is not known, nor is the part of the seed that is more targeted. Using optical and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, we investigated AFB(1)-induced changes in lignin and organic free radicals in seeds, and whether the inner and outer seed fractions differ in response to increasing AFB(1). RESULTS Different changes in the content of lignin and free radicals with increasing AFB(1) concentrations were observed in the two seed fractions. There was a significant positive linear correlation (R = 0.9923, P = 0.00005) between lignin content and AFB(1) concentration in the outer fraction, and no correlation between the lignin content and the AFB(1) concentration in the inner fraction. We found a positive correlation between the area of the green spectral emission component (C4) and the AFB(1) concentration in the outer fraction. CONCLUSIONS To the best of our knowledge, the results showed, for the first time, that maize seed fractions respond differently to aflatoxin with regard to their lignin and organic free radical content. Lignin content and (C4) area may be reliable indicators for the screening of lignin changes against AFB(1) content in the seeds, and thus for seed protection capacity.

AB - S and N-doped carbon dots (S-CDs and N-CDs) and their cisplatin (cis-Pt) derivatives.
(S-CDs@cis-Pt and N-CDs@cis-Pt) were tested on two ovarian cancer cell lines: A2780 and A2780 cells
resistant to cis-Pt (A2780R). Several spectroscopic techniques were employed to check S-CDs@cis-Pt and
N-CDs@cis-Pt: solid- and solution-state nuclear magnetic resonance, matrix-assisted laser desorption,
ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In addition,
synchrotron-based Fourier Transformed Infrared spectro-microscopy was used to evaluate the biochemical
changes in cells after treatment with cis-Pt, S-CDs, N-CDs, or S-CDs@cis-Pt and N-CDs@cis-Pt, respectively.
Computational chemistry was applied to establish the model for the most stable bond between
S-CDs and N-CDs and cis-Pt. The results revealed the successful modification of S-CDs and N-CDs with
cis-Pt and the formation of a stable composite system that can be used for drug delivery to cancer cells and likewise to overcome acquired cis-Pt resistance. Nanoparticle treatment of A2780 and A2780R cells
led to the changes in their structure of lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids depending on the treatment. The
results showed the S-CDs@cis-Pt and N-CDs@cis-Pt might be used in the combination with cis-Pt to treat
the adenocarcinoma, thus having a potential to be further developed as drug delivery systems.

AB - Lettuce is a worldwide grown leafy vegetable rich in phytochemicals which are essential in human diet. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of genotype, microbiological fertilisers and season on the rosette fresh weight and components of antioxidant activity. Six cultivars (green 'Kiribati', 'Aleppo', 'Aquino' and red 'Murai', 'Carmesi', 'Gaugin') were grown in a greenhouse experiment during three consecutive seasons (autumn, winter and spring) with application of microbiological fertilisers (EM Aktiv, Vital Tricho and their combination). Green cultivars showed higher fresh weight than red in spring and winter. Green cultivar 'Aleppo' showed the highest fresh weight in control during spring. Microbiological fertilisers led to increased fresh weight in autumn. Mainly, red cultivars showed higher quality parameters compared to green (total antioxidant capacity, total phenolic content, total carotenoids and POD activity). Red cultivar 'Carmesi' showed the highest total antioxidant capacity, total carotenoids, and total phenolic content in winter with combination of fertilisers, Vital Tricho, and in control. In spring, 'Carmesi' and 'Gaugin' showed the highest POD activity with Vital Tricho, and combination of fertilisers. The present study suggested that genotype, fertilisers and season jointly influenced quantity and quality parameters with emphasis on Vital Tricho, and/or combination of fertilisers.

AB - The UV-B represents the minor fraction of the solar spectrum, while UV-C is not contained in natural solar radiation, but both radiation types can cause damaging effects in plants. Cell walls (CWs) are one of the targets for external stressors. Juvenile P. omorika trees were treated either with 21 day-high doses UV-B or with 7 day-UV-C in open-top chambers. Using spectroscopic and biochemical techniques, it was shown that the response to UV radiation includes numerous modifications in needle CW structure: relative content of xylan, xyloglucan, lignin and cellulose decreased; cellulose crystallinity changed; yield of lignin monomers with stronger connection of C=C in side chain with the ring increased; re-distribution of inter- and intra-polymer H-bonds occurred. The recovery was mediated by an increase in the activities and changes in isoform profiles of CW bound covalent peroxidases (POD) and polyphenol oxidases (PO) (UV-B), and ionic POD and covalent PO (UV-C). A connection between activities of specific POD/PO isoforms and phenolic species (m- and p-coumaric acid, pinoresinol and cinnamic acid derivatives) was demonstrated, and supported by changes in the sRNA profile. In vivo fluorometry showed phenolics accumulation in needle epidermal CWs. These results imply transversal connections between polymers and changed mechanical properties of needle CW as a response to UV. The CW alterations enabled maintenance of physiological functions, as indicated by the preserved chlorophyll content and/or organization. The current study provides evidence that in conifers, needle CW response to both UV-B and UV-C includes biochemical modifications and structural remodeling.

AB - Two tomato genotypes with constitutively different ABA level, flacca mutant and wild type of Ailsa Craig cv. (WT), were subjected to three repeated drought cycles, with the aim to reveal the role of the abscisic acid (ABA) threshold in developing drought tolerance. Differential responses to drought of two genotypes were obtained: more pronounced stomatal closure, ABA biosynthesis and proline accumulation in WT compared to the mutant were compensated by dry weight accumulation accompanied by transient redox disbalance in flacca. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra analysis of isolated cell wall material and morphological parameter measurements on tomato leaves indicated changes in dry weight accumulation and carbon re-allocation to cell wall constituents in flacca, but not in WT. A higher proportion of cellulose, pectin and lignin in isolated cell walls from flacca leaves further increased with repeated drought cycles. Different ABA-dependent stomatal closure between drought cycles implies that acquisition of stomatal sensitivity may be a part of stress memory mechanism developed under given conditions. The regulatory role of ABA in the cell wall restructuring and growth regulation under low leaf potential was discussed with emphasis on the beneficial effects of drought priming in developing differential defense strategies against drought.

AB - This investigation was aimed to develop films and coatings based on natural biopolymers and active components, with physicochemical and functional properties for application in antimicrobial packaging. Biopolymer films were obtained from emulsions and dispersions by casting method. Coatings were formed by the application of emulsions on existing packaging. Synthesis of emulsions and dispersions were performed by combining biopolymers (chitosan-gelatin, pectin-gelatin) with lemongrass essential oil (LEO), Zn(CH3COO)2.2H2O, or ZnO, as active components. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of the films showed that the addition of glycerol contributed to the forming of strong hydrogen bonds between glycerol and chitosan-gelatin or pectin-gelatin composites, facilitating the process of polymer branching, which is substantial for encapsulation. Thermal analyses revealed two characteristic processes occurring at 110 degrees C (water evaporation) and within 215-235 degrees C (degradation of polysaccharide and glycerol). Major weight losses were observed at 290 degrees C (chitosan-gelatin films) and 215 degrees C (pectin-gelatin films). The chitosan-gelatin films exhibited a lower degree of solubility (31-21%), and better mechanical properties comparing with the pectin-gelatin films. The chitosan-gelatin emulsions and dispersions exhibited a higher antibacterial effect in vitro against E. coli, B. subtilis, and S. aureus. In the case of the pectin-gelatin emulsions, the impact of LEO on the antibacterial activity was evident. The effects of biopolymer coatings on the development of microorganisms on fresh raspberries (Rubus idaeus L.) were performed in vivo during eight days of raspberry storage at refrigerator temperature. The tested coatings extended the shelf life of stored raspberries from four to eight days. The synergistic effect between LEO and ZnO or Zn-Ac was observed both in vivo and in vitro.

AB - Carbon dots are biocompatible and non-toxic nanoparticles with chemical affinity to some heavy metals. Human activities increase soil pollution with copper. Cu is an essential microelement in plants, but excess can induce a harmful effects. In plant response to Cu, the cell wall plays an important role. This study aims to estimate possible amelioration effects of folic acid based CDs on Cu toxicity by studying the intracellular and cell wall compounds in maize (Zea mays L.) roots and leaves after 7 day-treatment in hydroponics. The sub-cellular compartmentalization and bio-macromolecular changes induced by 5 mu M Cu applied alone or with CDs (167 and 500 mg/L) were studied using the Synchrotron-based Fourier transformmicro-spectroscopy (SR-FTIR) combined with X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Cu induced changes in content of cell wall polysaccharides, proteins, and lipids. The XPS detected CDs transport throughout the plants. The Cu/167CDs treatment reduced Cu concentration in the roots, possibly by complexation/trapping between the functional groups on CDs surface and Cu2+. Principal component analysis of FTIR spectra confirmed that Cu/500CDs treatment increased Cu adverse effects in most tissues but alleviated adverse Cu effects on cell wall polysaccharides in the root xylem, and on polysaccharides and proteins in leaf phloem and mesophyll.

Effects of genotype and Bradyrhizobium inoculation on morphological traits, grain yield and protein content of soybean varieties.-Genetika, Vol 53, No.2, 911-925. Soybean crop production in Serbia involves seed inoculation by N-fixing bacteria just before sowing time. The main objective of the current work was to assess the impact of the genotype and inoculation on range of morphological and yield traits of soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill), as well as the total protein content. The experiment was conducted on chernozem soil, where soybean was previously grown. The six local varieties were used, where each variety was sown, in three replicates for both inoculated and non-inoculated treatment. The following morphological traits were analysed: the plant height, number of lateral branches, distance to the first pod, number of pods per plant, pods (containing seeds) weight per plant, seed weight per plant, and the total grain yield. The total protein content in seeds was determined by standard analytical method, while subtle differences in qualitative protein composition were assessed using Raman spectroscopy. The total protein content varied from 39.6 to 42.15 %. Performance of inoculation resulted in an increase of the plant height and the distance to the first pod, although not in all tested varieties. The highest and the lowest plant height values were observed for non-inoculated variety Dana (59.23cm) and Sava (80.03cm), respectively. The effect of genotype was much more expressed causing differences in almost all tested characters, except for the total protein content. However, Raman spectroscopy analyses revealed distinct discrimination among surveyed varieties, and differences between inoculated and non-inoculated plants in qualitative composition of seed proteins.

AB - The aim of this research was to verify the authenticity of monofloral honeys from the territory of the Republic of Serbia on the basis of physicochemical parameters routinely measured in honey quality control using multivariate analysis. Seventeen samples of monofloral honey (11 samples of acacia honey and 6 samples of sunflower honey) from the territory of the Republic of Serbia were analyzed. Physicochemical analysis of the samples included the examination of basic quality parameters and qualitative and quantitative analyses of phenolic compounds. In the samples tested, a total of 93 phenolic compounds were tentatively identified, and 19 of them were quantified. The obtained physicochemical analysis of the data served as input for the multivariate analysis. The h..t map, which is useful for visualizing numerical data, was used for this purpose. The obtained results showed that the applied data can serve to clearly separate acacia and sunflower honeys.

AB - Coupled substitution of fluorapatite (FAP) crystal lattice plays an important role in the engineering of optically active nanomaterials. Uniform fluorapatite nanopowders doped with praseodymium (Pr3+) and carbonate (CO32-) ions have been successfully synthesized by precipitation method under room temperature (25 degrees C). The structural, morphological, chemical and optical properties of monophase material were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared and Far Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR and FIR, respectively), Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Photoluminescence Spectroscopy (PL). Coupled substitution of FAP crystal lattice with Pr3+ and CO32- reduces the crystallite size with a constant c/a ratio of 1.72. FTIR study showed that synthesized nanopowders were AB-type CO32- substitution, and FIR study revealed new Pr-O vibrations. TEM analysis was found that synthesized nanopowders were composed of irregular spheres in the nanometer range. The fluorescence of FAP nanoparticles was in the violet-blue region of the visible part of the spectrum. When Pr3+ was doped in a lattice, the violet-blue emission becomes sharper due to reabsorption. MCR-ALS analyses of fluorescence spectra indicated the shift of the maximum to the blue color with the increase in the concentration of Pr3+ ions. Additionally, luminescent nanopowders demonstrated significant antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli. As the obtained nanoparticles showed a good absorption of ultraviolet A light and reabsorption of blue-green luminescence, they are suitable for further development of optically active nanomaterials for light filtering. Optically active PrCFAP nanopowders with antibacterial properties may be promising additives for the development of multifunctional cosmetic and health care products.

AB - The phosphates (Pi) are nowadays recognized as pollutants. We studied the effect of Pi (0.625-12.500 mM KH2PO4) in the culture medium on in vitro grown 2-month-old Populus alba trees. The levels of sugar phosphates and vacuolar and cytoplasmic Pi in cell compartments of roots and stems were determined using P-31 NMR, while tissue-specific micro- and macroelements mapping on stem cross-sections were performed using synchrotron-based X-ray microfluorescence. Plants grown on 0.625 mM Pi (MS/2 medium) showed a survival rate of 70%. With the increase in Pi concentrations up to 6.250 mM, plant growth and survival increased, without changes in total P content per mass or in the levels of cytoplasmic and vacuolar phosphates, in both stems and roots, while the levels of Fe, Cu, Zn, Ca and Mn in stems increased. Further increase in Pi to 9.375 and 12.500 mM in the medium resulted in inhibited growth comparable with plants grown on MS/2, with the increase in total P content per mass up to 50%, in both stems and roots, but with no changes in cytoplasmic and vacuolar phosphates; 12.500 mM Pi affected even plant survival (70%) and thus might be considered as mildly toxic. P-31 NMR results indicate that the high tolerance of P. alba to increased Pi could result from its ability to maintain an intracellular P homeostasis, despite P accumulation up to 50%, in both stems and roots, indicating P. alba as a promising wood species for dendroremediation.

AB - Phenolic compounds of 12 strawberry cultivars were profiled using spectrophotometry, spectrofluorometry, and high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, coupled with multivariate regression analysis. Total phenolic content, total anthocyanin content, and total antioxidant capacity (TPC, TACY, and TAC, respectively) and concentrations of individual phenolics were evaluated, and the multivariate statistic was employed to identify the most promising cultivars based on their phenolic content. According to the principal component analysis, TAC was strongly correlated with the TPC (0.81), pointing out its importance in overall antioxidant activity. 'Joly', 'Laetitia', and 'Asia' cultivars were distinguished from others as the richest in concerning identified anthocyanins, almost all flavonoids and phenolic acids. Multivariate curve resolution with alternating least squares indicated the presence of two main types of fluorophores assigned to anthocyanins and phenolics, in which emission spectral ratios also showed the highest values in the referred cultivars. These cultivars could be recommended to consumers in terms of the health functionality of fruit.

AB - Fluorapatite doped with rare-earth elements has a wide-range of biomedical applications. Here, a new type of fluorapatite nanocrystals doped with praseodymium (FAP-Pr) with excitation-emission profiles in visible part of the spectrum is fabricated. Energy levels of Pr3+ activator ion contain metastable multiples states that offer the possibility of efficient multicolor emission lines in FAP nanocrystals. Three types of FAP-Pr nanocrystals with 0.1%, 0.5% and 1% atomic percent of Pr3+ (along with the undoped FAP control sample) are studied. Their novel chemical production method is described, the FAP-Pr nanocrystals structure, biocompatibility and the suitability for cell imaging are analyzed. Physicochemical characterization confirms crystals down to nanometer size. In addition, quantum-chemical calculation predicts that Pr3+ ions are incorporated into the FAP crystal lattice at Ca2 (6 h) sites. In vitro viability results shows that FAP-Pr nanocrystals are nontoxic to live cells. Additionally, the cell uptake of the FAP-Pr nanocrystals is studied using fluorescence-based widefield and confocal microscopy. The nanocrystals show characteristic green emission at 545 nm (P-3(0)-> H-3(5) transition of Pr3+ ion) and orange emission at 600 nm (D-1(2)-> H-3(4)), which we use to discriminate from cell autofluorescence background. Orthogonal projections across 3D confocal stacks show that the nanocrystals are able to enter the cells positioning themselves within the cytoplasm. Overall, the new FAP-Pr nanocrystals are biocompatible and of the tested types, the 0.5% Pr3+ doped nanocrystals show the highest promise as a tracking nanoparticle probe for bioimaging applications.

AB - Maize seeds are a primary source of nourishment and their viability is a critical consideration to
ensure a reasonably high harvest and seed quality. In this work, we study the effect of aflatoxin
induced stress on the seed viability concerning the germination, as well as the estimation on the
impact on the viability using fluorescence spectroscopy. Our results showed that the contaminated
seeds exhibit significant decreases in the percent of germination, even at low levels, if compared to the
uncontaminated seeds (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the fluorescence ratio of 453/680 and 680/751, could
be used for the rapid screening of the viability of the maize seeds.

AB - Lettuce belongs to a group of leafy vegetable crops with special importance in humannutrition. Along with healthy compounds lettuce can accumulate nitrate in leaves. Thepurpose of this study was to examine the effects of genotype, microbiological fertilizers andseason on plant weight and nitrate content in outer and inner leaves. Green cultivars(′Kiribati′, ′Aquino′, ′Aleppo′) were cultivated in a fertile soil, in a greenhouse trial at thecompany Iceberg Salat Centar, during three successive seasons (autumn, winter and spring).Microbiological fertilizers (EM Aktiv, Vital Tricho and combination of EM Aktiv and VitalTricho) were applied in the soil before trials and foliar. In spring cultivar ′Aquino′ showed thehighest head fresh weight (360.3 g). All microbiological fertilizers led to increased head freshweight in ′Aquino′ during autumn trial. Mainly fresh weight was higher in spring and wintercompared to autumn. Cultivar ′Aquino′ showed the highest nitrate content (985.4 mg/kg,autumn) in outer leaves with application of Vital Tricho. Opposite to that, the lowest nitratecontent was found in inner leaves of cultivar ′Aleppo′ (35.4 mg/kg, spring) with combinationof fertilizers. Generally, microbiological fertilizers significantly increased nitrate content inouter and decreased in inner leaves. In both leaves the lowest nitrate level was measured inspring season. During all trials nitrate content remained under allowed level of EuropeanCommission Regulation (563/2002) for protected lettuce.
