Influence of biofertilizers on yield and quality of lettuce grown in the open field

AB  - The production of lettuce is very profitable due to the short vegetation period and the 
possibilities of its cultivation throughout the year. On average, the salad contains 94% water, 
2% sugar, 0.6% crude cellulose, 0.6% mineral matter and 1.2% crude protein. It is rich in 
vitamins C, B1 and B2, and many mineral elements. Great influence on the quantitative and 
qualitative properties of lettuce in addition to the variety and production conditions has a 
proper diet. The application of mineral fertilizers results in high yields, but their inadequate 
application can cause various problems such are: decrease in dry matter content, deterioration 
of salad quality, increase in soil acidity, degeneration of physical properties, increase in 
erosion and instability in land aggregates. In order to reduce the use of chemicals and increase 
the yield in the same time, the improvement of plant production is moving in the direction of 
introducing biofertilizers. In recent years there has been a trend of decreasing the usage of 
mineral nutrients, primarily nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (Haytova, 2013), in which 
bio stimulators play a significant role. Therefore, the goal was to determine the impact of 
biofertilizers on the yield and quality of lettuce and to investigate the possibility of 
streamlining the crop by using biostimulators in lettuce nutrition. The two-factor experiment 
was set on a private plot in district Vranjes, East Sarajevo by using the randomized block in 3 
replications. The highest yield of lettuce was obtained in the variant with the application of 
the biofertilizer Bioplant flora (630.50 g – please state the unit), whereas the lowest was 
recorded in the control variant of fertilization (468.00 g). The highest percentage of dry matter 
was noted in the third variant of fertilization (Bioplant flora) in the variety Majska kraljica 
(6.45%), whilst the lowest percentage was reached in the control variant of the same variety 
(4.14%).

Quantitative traits of white cabbage cultivars in association with two biofertilisers - Abstract

AB  - Cabbage is one of the most important vegetables from Brassicaceae family to which 
biofertilisers is increasingly applied following the current trend in the cabbage organic 
farming. The main goal of our study was to examine whether solely applicated biofertilisers 
enhance head weight and other morphological parameters in cabbage. Experiment with three 
Bejo Zaden cultivars ('Farao' F1, 'Tiara' F1, and 'Excalibur' F1) were conducted under the open 
field conditions from April to June 2019. Two different microbiological fertilisers, Organic 
balance and FitoHelp, were applied foliar, six times during the vegetation period, with a 
battery sprayer. After harvest, several parameters were estimated: head weight, width and 
height, number of leaves, internal core height and width. The results showed the highest 
value of head weight (1264.89 g), head width (15.06 cm), head height (15.57 cm), number of 
leaves (22.56), internal core height (8.01 cm) and internal core width (3.51 cm) in cultivar 
'Excalibur' F1 compared to other two cultivars for fresh market. Application of both fertilisers 
led to increased levels of all tested parameters compared to control. Furthermore, fertiliser 
Organic balance showed the highest impact on all tested parameters, resulting in increasing 
value of head weight by 78.6%. This study revealed that mixed culture fertiliser showed 
greater impact in terms of head weight, number of leaves, and internal core width compared 
to fertiliser containing a single strain of bacteria. Accordingly, with an exception in head and 
internal core height, all examined factors showed statistically significant impact on tested 
parameters, including their interaction.

AB  - The main goal of our study was to find an optimal combination of tested factors to achieve lettuce rich in bioactive compounds sustaining its pleasant taste. We examined three red and three green cultivars in a greenhouse using two microbiological fertilisers (EM Aktiv and Vital Tricho), and their combination. Plants were grown in three consecutive growing seasons (autumn, winter, and spring). Lactones accumulated in autumn, whereas phenolics’ concentration rose during winter. Red cultivars showed higher phenolics and lactone content, where chicoric acid and luteolin-7-glucoside were the most abundant in the ‘Gaugin’ winter trial. Lactucopicrin was the predominant lactone among tested cultivars with the highest value in the red cultivar ‘Carmesi’. Solely applicated, the fertiliser EM Aktiv and Vital Tricho led to significantly higher phenolic acid and dihydrolactucopicrin content, while combined, there were notably increased levels of all detected lactones. Application of single fertilisers had no effect on flavonoid content, while the combination even reduced it. A sensory analysis showed a negative correlation between overall taste and total sesquiterpene lactones, lactucopicrin, caffeoylmalic, and chlorogenic acid, indicating a less bitter taste with decreasing content of these compounds. Our findings indicate that the cultivar, fertiliser, and growing season jointly affected all of the tested parameters, highlighting the differences in the application of EM Aktiv, Vital Tricho, and their combination.

Uticaj mikrobioloških đubriva, genotipa i sezone gajenja na prinos i kvalitet salate (Lactuca sativa L.)

AB  - Salata (Lactuca sativa L.) je jednogodišnja povrtarska biljka, sa kratkim vegetacionim periodom i mogućnošću gajenja tokom cele godine. Jedna je od najznačajnijih vrsta iz grupe lisnatog povrća, bogata fitonutrijentima koji su esencijalni u ljudskoj ishrani. Cilj ovog istraživanja je bio da se utvrdi uticaj genotipa, mikrobioloških đubriva i sezone na kvantitativne i kvalitativne osobine salate. U sprovedenim istraživanjima ispitani su kvantitativni (morfološki i agronomski) parametri: visina i prečnik rozete i stabla, broj listova, sveža i suva masa listova, sveža masa stabla i rozete (glavice), kao i kvalitativni (biohemijski) parametri: sadržaj nitrata, ukupne rastvorljive materije i organske kiseline, ukupna antioksidativna aktivnost, ukupni karotenoidi, sadržaj vitamina C, sadržaj ukupnih i pojedinačnih fenolnih jedinjenja, ukupni i pojedinačni seskviterpenski laktoni i aktivnost peroksidaze.
Ogledi sa šest genotipova salate (tri zelene ‘Kiribati’, ‘Aquino’, ‘Aleppo’ i tri crvene ‘Murai’, ‘Gaugin’, ‘Carmesi’) bili su postavljeni u kompaniji Iceberg Salat Centar, u Surčinu. Biljke su gajene u plasteniku, bez dodatnog grejanja, tokom tri uzastopne sezone (jesen, zima i proleće), uz primenu mikrobioloških đubriva (EM Aktiv, Vital Tricho i njihova kombinacija).
Dobijeni rezultati ogleda ukazuju na uticaj genotipa na ispitivana kvantitativna svojstva salate. Generalno, zelene sorte su pokazale tendenciju veće sveže mase rozete-glavice u odnosu na crvene tokom proleća i zime. Najveću svežu masu rozete ostvarila je zelena sorta ‘Aleppo’ u kontrolnim uslovima prolećnog ogleda, nasuprot crvene sorte ‘Carmesi‘ koja je imala najmanju masu u kontroli jesenjeg ogleda. Sorta ‘Aleppo’ pokazala je sličan trend kod parametra sveža masa listova, gde je u kontroli prolećnog ogleda ostvarila najveće vrednosti, kao i najveću suvu masu listova u zimu primenom kombinacije đubriva, čime se ova sorta izdvojila po stabilnosti za najvažnije kvantitativne komponente. Zelena sorta ‘Aquino‘ imala je najveću svežu masu stabla, broj listova i prečnik stabla primenom đubriva Vital Tricho u zimu. Najveću visinu rozete i stabla ostvarila je zelena sorta ‘Kiribati’ primenom đubriva EM Aktiv u proleće. Jedina crvena sorta, koja je imala najveću vrednost morfološkog parametra-prečnik rozete, je sorta ‘Carmesi‘ u zimskom ogledu primenom kombinacije đubriva. Sa aspekta većine testiranih morfoloških parametara primena mikrobioloških đubriva tokom zime i proleća ili nije imala uticaj ili je doprinosila značajnom smanjenju vrednosti u odnosu na kontrolu. Nasuprot tome, primena đubriva Vital Tricho i kombinacije đubriva dovela je do značajnog povećanja sveže mase rozete-glavice u jesen. Najveći uticaj sezone na povećanje vrednosti kvantitativnih parametara ostvaren je tokom proleća i zime, što se ogledalo kroz dobijanje značajno težih glavica salate u ove dve sezone.
Rezultati ispitivanih primarnih i sekundarnih metabolita ukazuju na uticaj genotipa na biohemijska svojstva. Najveći sadržaj nitrata ostvarila je crvena sorta ‘Carmesi‘ primenom đubriva EM Aktiv tokom zime, dok je najmanji sadržaj imala zelena sorta ‘Kiribati‘ u kontroli prolećnog ogleda. Primena mikrobioloških đubriva doprinela je značajnom povećanju sadržaja nitrata kod svih sorti u prolećnom ogledu. Tokom svih ogleda svi genotipovi su bili zdravstveno bezbedni sa aspekta maksimalno dozvoljene količine nitrata prema domaćoj i evropskoj zakonskoj regulativi. Najveću vrednost ukupno rastvorljivih materija i organskih kiselina ostvarila je crvena sorta ‘Murai‘ u zimskom ogledu primenom đubriva Vital Tricho i EM Aktiv redom. Primena đubriva uglavnom nije uticala na vrednosti ukupno rastvorljivih materija i organskih kiselina, gde je tokom svih sezona sadržaj ostao stabilan.
Sa aspekta antioksidativne aktivnosti, crvene sorte salate su generalno bile kvalitetnije u odnosu na zelene (ukupna antioksidativna aktivnost, ukupna fenolna jedinjenja, ukupni karotenoidi, vitamin C, ukupni seskviterpenski laktoni i aktivnost peroksidaze). Izdvojila se crvena sorta ‘Carmesi’ po stabilnosti, koja je imala najveće količine ukupnih seskviterpenskih laktona (kombinacija đubriva) u jesenjem ogledu, antioksidativnu aktivnost (kombinacija đubriva), ukupne karotenoide (kontrola, Vital Tricho), ukupan sadržaj fenolnih jedinjenja (kontrola) u zimskom ogledu i u proleće sadržaj vitamina C (Vital Tricho), i zajedno sa sortom ‘Gaugin’ pokazala je najveću aktivnost peroksidaze (kombinacija đubriva). Najzastupljeniji seskviterpenski lakton je laktukopikrin, dok su najviše zastupljena pojedinačna fenolna jedinjenja 2,3 dikafeoiltartarna kiselina, hlorogena kiselina, luteolin-7-glukozid i kvercetin-3-O-(6″-O-malonil)-glukozid. Primena mikrobioloških đubriva smanjila je antioksidativnu aktivnost u jesen, sa zavisnim uticajem genotipa-sorte tokom proleća i zime. Suprotno, u svim sezonama aktivnost peroksidaze je bila povećana primenom đubriva gotovo kod svih sorti.
Primena mikrobioloških đubriva uticala je na povećanje brojnosti mikroflore u zemljištu, u poređenju sa stanjem pre početka ogleda, dok je kod sadržaja lako pristupačnog fosfora i kalijuma došlo do smanjenja, a sadržaj ukupnog azota je blago povećan.
Istraživanje sprovedeno u okviru ove disertacije pokazalo je da su genotip, mikrobiološka đubriva i sezona u interakciji uticali na kvantitativna i kvalitativna svojstva testiranih genotipova salate, sa naglašenim uticajem đubriva Vital Tricho i/ili kombinacije đubriva.
AB  - Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is an annual vegetable crop, with short vegetation period and possibility to cultivate throughout whole year. It is one of the most important species from the leafy vegetables group, enriched with phytonutrients which are essential in human diet. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of genotype, microbiological fertilisers and season on the quantitative and qualitative traits of lettuce. Two types of the parameters were examined, quantitative parameters (morphological and agronomical)- rosette, stem height and diameter, number of leaves, fresh and dry leaf weight, stem and rosette (head) fresh weight, as well as, qualitative parameters (biochemical)- nitrate content, total soluble solids, total acidity content, total antioxidant activity, total carotenoids, vitamin C content, total and individual phenolics, total and individual sesquiterpene lactones and peroxidase activity.
Experiments with six lettuce cultivars (three green ‘Kiribati’, ‘Aquino’, ‘Aleppo’ and three red ‘Murai’, ‘Gaugin’, ‘Carmesi’) were carried out in the company Iceberg Salat Centar, Surčin. Plants were grown in the greenhouse, without additional heating, during three consecutive growing seasons (autumn, winter and spring), with application of microbiological fertilisers (EM Aktiv, Vital Tricho and their combination).
Results showed the influence of the genotype on the quantitative parameters. Mainly, green cultivars showed tendency to higher rosette (head) fresh weight than red in spring and winter. Green cultivar ‘Aleppo’ showed the highest rosette fresh weight in control during spring, compared to red cultivar ‘Carmesi’ with the lowest rosette fresh weight in control conditions in autumn. Cultivar ‘Aleppo’ showed the similar trend to parameter fresh leaf weight, with the highest level in control in the spring trial, as well as the highest dry leaf weight in the winter acomplished with combined fertilisers, whereby this cultivar stood out for its stability for the most important quantitative components. Green cultivar ‘Aquino’ showed the highest stem fresh weight, number of leaves and stem diameter using Vital Tricho in winter. The highest value of the rosette and stem height showed cultivar ‘Kiribati’ using EM Aktiv in the spring. The only red cultivar with the highest morphological trait was cultivar ‘Carmesi’ with the rosette diameter in the winter trial with application of combined fertilisers. According to all tested morphological parameters, the application of microbiological fertilisers during winter and spring either had no effect or contributed to a significant decrease in value compared to the control. In contrast, the application of Vital Tricho and a combination of fertilisers led to a significant increase in the rosette (head) fresh weight in the autumn. The greatest season impact on the increase of quantitative parameters was recorded during spring and winter, which resulted in obtaining significantly heavier lettuce heads in these two seasons.
The genotype showed influence on lettuce biochemical properties based on the results of the examined primary and secondary metabolites. The highest nitrate content showed red cultivar ‘Carmesi’ with application of EM Aktiv during the winter, while the lowest content showed green cultivar ‘Kiribati’ in the control of the spring trial. The application of microbiological fertilisers contributed to a significantly higher concentration of nitrate in all cultivars in the spring. During all experiments, all genotypes were safe for consumption from the aspect of the maximum allowed amount of nitrate according to local and European legislation. The highest value of total soluble solids and organic acids showed red cultivar ‘Murai’ in the winter experiment using Vital Tricho and EM Aktiv fertilisers, respectively. The application of fertilisers did not affect the values of total soluble solids and organic acids, in which the content remained stable during all seasons.
In terms of antioxidant activity, red cultivars showed higher quality parameters compared to green (total antioxidant activity, total phenols, total carotenoids, vitamin C, total sesquiterpene lactones and peroxidase activity). Red cultivar ‘Carmesi’ emphasized for its stability, which showed the highest quantity of total sesquiterpene lactones (combined fertilisers) in the autumn, total antioxidant activity (combined fertilisers), total carotenoids (control, Vital Tricho), total phenolics (control) in the winter, the highest vitamin C content (Vital Tricho) in spring, and together with the cultivar ‘Gaugin’, showed the highest peroxidase activity (combined fertilisers). The major sesquiterpene lactone is lactucopicrin, while the most abundant individual phenols are 2,3-dicaffeoyltartaric acid, chlorogenic acid, luteolin-7-glucoside and quercetin-3-O-(6″-O-malonyl)-glucoside. The application of microbiological fertilisers lowered antioxidant activity in autumn, with the cultivar dependent response during spring and winter. On the other hand, in all seasons specific peroxidase activity was enhanced by fertilisers in almost all cultivars.
The application of microbiological fertilisers increased the number of microflora in the soil, compared to the conditions before initial experiment, while the readily available phosphorus and potassium content decreased, with the total nitrogen content slightly increased.
The research conducted within this dissertation showed that genotype, microbiological fertilisers and season jointly influenced quantity and quality lettuce parameters, with emphasis on Vital Tricho, and/or combination of fertilisers.

Cultivar ‘Aleppo’ showed the similar trend to parameter fresh leaf weight, with the highest level in control in the spring trial, as well as the highest dry leaf weight in the winter acomplished with combined fertilisers, whereby this cultivar stood out for its stability for the most important quantitative components. Green cultivar ‘Aquino’ showed the highest stem fresh weight, number of leaves and stem diameter using Vital Tricho in winter. The highest value of the rosette and stem height showed cultivar ‘Kiribati’ using EM Aktiv in the spring. The only red cultivar with the highest morphological trait was cultivar ‘Carmesi’ with the rosette diameter in the winter trial with application of combined fertilisers. According to all tested morphological parameters, the application of microbiological fertilisers during winter and spring either had no effect or contributed to a significant decrease in value compared to the control. In contrast, the application of Vital Tricho and a combination of fertilisers led to a significant increase in the rosette (head) fresh weight in the autumn. The greatest season impact on the increase of quantitative parameters was recorded during spring and winter, which resulted in obtaining significantly heavier lettuce heads in these two seasons.
The genotype showed influence on lettuce biochemical properties based on the results of the examined primary and secondary metabolites. The highest nitrate content showed red cultivar ‘Carmesi’ with application of EM Aktiv during the winter, while the lowest content showed green cultivar ‘Kiribati’ in the control of the spring trial. The application of microbiological fertilisers contributed to a significantly higher concentration of nitrate in all cultivars in the spring. During all experiments, all genotypes were safe for consumption from the aspect of the maximum allowed amount of nitrate according to local and European legislation. The highest value of total soluble solids and organic acids showed red cultivar ‘Murai’ in the winter experiment using Vital Tricho and EM Aktiv fertilisers, respectively. The application of fertilisers did not affect the values of total soluble solids and organic acids, in which the content remained stable during all seasons.
In terms of antioxidant activity, red cultivars showed higher quality parameters compared to green (total antioxidant activity, total phenols, total carotenoids, vitamin C, total sesquiterpene lactones and peroxidase activity). Red cultivar ‘Carmesi’ emphasized for its stability, which showed the highest quantity of total sesquiterpene lactones (combined fertilisers) in the autumn, total antioxidant activity (combined fertilisers), total carotenoids (control, Vital Tricho), total phenolics (control) in the winter, the highest vitamin C content (Vital Tricho) in spring, and together with the cultivar ‘Gaugin’, showed the highest peroxidase activity (combined fertilisers). The major sesquiterpene lactone is lactucopicrin, while the most abundant individual phenols are 2,3-dicaffeoyltartaric acid, chlorogenic acid, luteolin-7-glucoside and quercetin-3-O-(6″-O-malonyl)-glucoside. The application of microbiological fertilisers lowered antioxidant activity in autumn, with the cultivar dependent response during spring and winter. On the other hand, in all seasons specific peroxidase activity was enhanced by fertilisers in almost all cultivars.
The application of microbiological fertilisers increased the number of microflora in the soil, compared to the conditions before initial experiment, while the readily available phosphorus and potassium content decreased, with the total nitrogen content slightly increased.
The research conducted within this dissertation showed that genotype, microbiological fertilisers and season jointly influenced quantity and quality lettuce parameters, with emphasis on Vital Tricho, and/or combination of fertilisers.",

Biljke sugajene u plasteniku, bez dodatnog grejanja, tokom tri uzastopne sezone(jesen, zima i proleće), primenom mikrobioloških đubriva (EM Aktiv,Vital Tricho i njihova kombinacija). Cilj ovog istraživanja je bio da seutvrdi uticaj genotipa, mikrobioloških đubriva i sezone na sadržaj ukupnorastvorljivih materija i organskih kiselina. Najveću vrednost ukupnorastvorljivih materija i organskih kiselina ostvarila je crvena sorta ‘Murai‘u zimskom ogledu primenom đubriva Vital Tricho i EM Aktiv redom.Primena đubriva uglavnom nije uticala na vrednosti ukupno rastvorljivihmaterija i organskih kiselina, gde je tokom svih sezona sadržaj ostaostabilan. Istraživanje je pokazalo da su glavni faktori uticali naposmatrane parametre, sa izraženim uticajem genotipa.

AB  - The principal sesquiterpene lactones (lactucin, lactucopicrin, and its dihydro forms), known as contributors to bitter taste, were measured in green and red coloured lettuce using Ultra-performance liquid chromatography. Six lettuce cultivars (‘Kiribati’, ‘Murai’, ‘Aquino’, ‘Gaugin’, ‘Aleppo’ and ‘Carmesi’) were grown in a greenhouse experiment using microbiological fertilisers (EM Aktiv, Vital Tricho, and their combination) during three successive growing seasons (autumn, winter, and spring). The major sesquiterpene lactone was lactucopicrin with the highest level found in cultivar ‘Carmesi’ (0.65 mg/g dry weight) in autumn with the combination of fertilisers. The concentrations of lactucin, dihydrolactucin and dihydrolactucopicrin ranged from 0.001-0.085, 0.003-0.015, and 0.001-0.056 mg/g dry weight, respectively, and were not found in all lettuce samples. Generally, red cultivars showed higher content of lactones compared to green. Application of Vital Tricho and the combination of fertilisers led to an increased level of lactucopicrin, in some cultivars, in the range of 77-800% compared to unfertilised plants. Higher levels of lactucopicrin were found in the autumn trial compared to spring and winter. The present study suggests that genotype, fertilisers and season jointly affected the quantity of sesquiterpene lactones with emphasis on Vital Tricho, and/or the combination of fertilisers.

AB  - Lettuce is a worldwide grown leafy vegetable rich in phytochemicals which are essential in human diet. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of genotype, microbiological fertilisers and season on the rosette fresh weight and components of antioxidant activity. Six cultivars (green 'Kiribati', 'Aleppo', 'Aquino' and red 'Murai', 'Carmesi', 'Gaugin') were grown in a greenhouse experiment during three consecutive seasons (autumn, winter and spring) with application of microbiological fertilisers (EM Aktiv, Vital Tricho and their combination). Green cultivars showed higher fresh weight than red in spring and winter. Green cultivar 'Aleppo' showed the highest fresh weight in control during spring. In spring, 'Carmesi' and 'Gaugin' showed the highest POD activity with Vital Tricho, and combination of fertilisers. The present study suggested that genotype, fertilisers and season jointly influenced quantity and quality parameters with emphasis on Vital Tricho, and/or combination of fertilisers.

The productivity and quality of Lactuca sativa as influenced by microbiological fertilisers and seasonal conditions

AB  - Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is an annual, leafy crop with a short growth in cool season. The aim of this study 
was to determine the effect of microbiological fertilisers, genotype and growing seasons on the fresh weight 
(FW), concentration of nitrate and vitamin C in the rosette (head) of red lettuce. The greenhouse experiment 
included three cultivars (‘Murai’, ‘Gaugin’ and ‘Carmesi’) of red lettuce grown in fertile soil during successive 
growing seasons: autumn, winter and spring. Three types of microbiological fertilisers: (1) mixture of fungi and 
bacteria and their products, referred to as effective microorganisms (EM), (2) containing Trichoderma spp. and 
(3) mixture of EM and Trichoderma spp., were applied for red lettuce. Microbiological fertilisers were applied in 
the soil and via foliar spray before planting. Significantly higher FW of the rosette was in spring and winter than 
in autumn. The ‘Murai’ showed significantly the highest (264.7 g) FW of the rosette in spring. Trichoderma spp. 
fertiliser and the combination of effective microorganisms and Trichoderma spp. significantly increased FW of the 
rosette for the ‘Murai’ and ‘Gaugin’ grown in autumn. The highest nitrate concentration was observed for winter 
grown ‘Carmesi’ (805.2 mg kg-1) treated by effective microorganisms, and the lowest for spring grown ‘Gaugin’ 
(62.2 mg kg-1) without microbial fertilisers. Generally, the application of microbiological fertilisers contributed 
to a significantly higher concentration of nitrate in the rosette of red lettuce. The concentration of nitrate did not 
exceed maximum level for protected lettuce (EC No 563/2002). In spring, significantly the highest concentration

was to determine the effect of microbiological fertilisers, genotype and growing seasons on the fresh weight

included three cultivars (‘Murai’, ‘Gaugin’ and ‘Carmesi’) of red lettuce grown in fertile soil during successive 
growing seasons: autumn, winter and spring. Three types of microbiological fertilisers: (1) mixture of fungi and 
bacteria and their products, referred to as effective microorganisms (EM), (2) containing Trichoderma spp. and 
(3) mixture of EM and Trichoderma spp., were applied for red lettuce. Microbiological fertilisers were applied in 
the soil and via foliar spray before planting. Significantly higher FW of the rosette was in spring and winter than 
in autumn. The ‘Murai’ showed significantly the highest (264.7 g) FW of the rosette in spring. Trichoderma spp. 
fertiliser and the combination of effective microorganisms and Trichoderma spp. significantly increased FW of the 
rosette for the ‘Murai’ and ‘Gaugin’ grown in autumn. The highest nitrate concentration was observed for winter 
grown ‘Carmesi’ (805.2 mg kg-1) treated by effective microorganisms, and the lowest for spring grown ‘Gaugin’ 
(62.2 mg kg-1) without microbial fertilisers. Generally, the application of microbiological fertilisers contributed 
to a significantly higher concentration of nitrate in the rosette of red lettuce. The concentration of nitrate did not 
exceed maximum level for protected lettuce (EC No 563/2002). In spring, significantly the highest concentration 
of vitamin C (12.2 mg 100 g-1 FW) was found in the ‘Carmesi’ treated with Trichoderma spp. Microbiological 
fertilisers contributed to significantly higher concentration of vitamin C in the ‘Gaugin’ and ‘Carmesi’ grown in 
winter and spring.

this study was to examine the effects of genotype and organic biostimulant on different
morphological and production characteristics. Lettuce plants were grown from the seedlings
in the open field, at the company Iceberg Salat Centar, from May to June. Two lettuce
cultivars were examined (green oak cv. Pleasance- Bejo Zaden and red lollo rosso
cv.Orville- Rijk Zwaan). Plants were grown on a density equivalent to 10 plants/m2 with
application of regular growing practices. Organic biostimulant based on humic acids
(Cytohumat-Agrofarmica) was applied in the soil before transplanting and two times foliar
during vegetation period. The analysis of lettuce quality parameters was carried out at the end
of the vegetation period, during harvest. The impact of biostimulant was statistically
significant in both cultivars, especially in parameters number of leaves per plant and rosette
fresh weight. The average number of leaves per plant with applied biostimulant was (43.5
Pleasance and 26.67 Orville). In control treatment this parameter was significantly lower in
both cultivars (37.17 and 21.33, respectively). Rosette fresh weight in control and
biostimulant treatment in Pleasance was 324.33 and 440 g, and in Orville 132.5 and 229.17g.
There wasn’t significant difference between cultivars in rosette diameter but within the same
cultivar application of biostimulant significantly affected this parameter. To conclude, we can
recommend the usage of organic biostimulant in lettuce production.
AB  - Салата је једногодишња врста, прохладне климе, која припада групи лиснатог поврћа 
из фамилије Asteraceae. Циљ овог истраживања био је да се утврди ефекат генотипа и 
органског биостимулатора на различите морфолошке и производне особине салате. 
Салата је гајена на отвореном пољу компаније Iceberg Salat Centar, током маја и јуна 
месеца (преко расада). Испитиване су две сорте, једна у типу храстовог листа, зелене 
боје и друга у типу lollo rose, црвене боје листа (Pleasance - Bejo Zaden i Orville - Rijk

значајно утицао на овај параметар. На основу свега можемо изнети закључак да 
примена органског биостимулатора има оправдања у производњи салате.

AB  - Watermelon is an annual vegetable crop from Cucurbitaceae family. Five mini watermeloncultivars (red-fleshed ′Faerie′ F1, ′Golden crown′ F1, ′Bonanza′ F1 and yellowfleshed′Sureness′ F1, ′Yellow baby′ F1) were grown in open field experiment from May toJuly 2018. Plants were grown on a fertile soil, covered with black mulch film, on a distance75x120 cm. During vegetation period regular agricultural practices were applied(fertirrigation, weeding and preventive protection against diseases and pests). Fruits wereharvested after 60 days from planting. The aim of this study was to examine morphologicaltraits of five cultivars in full physiological maturity. Fruit weight ranged between 1.57-2.65kg with the highest value in cultivar ′Sureness′. Number of fruits ranged from 20 (′Yellowbaby′, ′Sureness′) to 35 (′Faerie′). Rind thickness ranged between 5.22-11.91 mm with thehighest value in ′Yellow baby′. Total soluble solids ranged from 9.5-10.95 °Brix and randmanbetween 37-49%. Among all cultivars, red-fleshed ′Bonanza′ showed the highest randman andtotal soluble solids (49% and 10.95 °Brix, respectively). Opposite to that, the lowest totalsoluble solids showed yellow-fleshed cultivars ′Sureness′ and ′Yellow baby′. Generally,yellow cultivars showed higher fruit weight and rind thickness, whereas red cultivars showedhigher number of fruits per plant, total soluble solids and randman. The present study outlinesthat ′Bonanza′ and ′Faerie′ showed the highest quality (soluble solids content) among testedvarieties.

AB  - Lettuce belongs to a group of leafy vegetable crops with special importance in humannutrition. Along with healthy compounds lettuce can accumulate nitrate in leaves. Thepurpose of this study was to examine the effects of genotype, microbiological fertilizers andseason on plant weight and nitrate content in outer and inner leaves. Green cultivars(′Kiribati′, ′Aquino′, ′Aleppo′) were cultivated in a fertile soil, in a greenhouse trial at thecompany Iceberg Salat Centar, during three successive seasons (autumn, winter and spring).Microbiological fertilizers (EM Aktiv, Vital Tricho and combination of EM Aktiv and VitalTricho) were applied in the soil before trials and foliar. In spring cultivar ′Aquino′ showed thehighest head fresh weight (360.3 g). All microbiological fertilizers led to increased head freshweight in ′Aquino′ during autumn trial. Mainly fresh weight was higher in spring and wintercompared to autumn. Cultivar ′Aquino′ showed the highest nitrate content (985.4 mg/kg,autumn) in outer leaves with application of Vital Tricho. Opposite to that, the lowest nitratecontent was found in inner leaves of cultivar ′Aleppo′ (35.4 mg/kg, spring) with combinationof fertilizers. Generally, microbiological fertilizers significantly increased nitrate content inouter and decreased in inner leaves. In both leaves the lowest nitrate level was measured inspring season. During all trials nitrate content remained under allowed level of EuropeanCommission Regulation (563/2002) for protected lettuce.

AB  - Lettuce (Lactuca sativa, L.) is an annual, cool season crop belonging to Asteraceae family and to a group of leafy
vegetables. It is rich in minerals, vitamins and antioxidative compounds which are essential for human nutrition. The
advantage of lettuce, as eaten raw, is that maintains more nutrients than other cooked vegetables. Lettuce is low in
calories and it is suggested to diabetics, people with sleep problems and disturbed metabolism. Growers are interested
in cultivating lettuce because of their short vegetation period and opportunity to cultivate in all seasons. The purpose
of this study was to examine the effect of microbiological fertilizer Em Aktiv (Candor) on the total phenolic content
(TPC) in six lettuce cultivars. Cultivars (′Kiribati′, ′Murai′, ′Aquino′, ′Gaugin′, ′Aleppo′, ′Carmesi′- Rijk Zwaan) were
grown in the fertile soil in a greenhouse experiment during three successive seasons (autumn, winter and spring). Total
phenolic content ranged between 175.85-372.73 μg GAE/g FW in autumn, 104.12-522.74 μg GAE/g FW in winter
and 88.88-340.93 μg GAE/g FW in spring. Our results indicated that red cultivars mainly had higher total phenolic
content compared to green cultivars with the exception in autumn experiment. Among all seasons, control treatment
of cultivar ′Carmesi′ showed the highest total phenolic content (522.74 μg GAE/g FW) in winter. The effect of
fertilizer Em Aktiv on TPC in different cultivars was to some extent positive in spring and autumn, but even negative
during winter season. Such a complex response indicates the need for careful selection of varieties and fertilizers in
relation to the season. To conclude, red cultivars were pointed out with higher total phenolic content and they could
be recommended as a great source of bioactive compounds for healthy human diet.
AB  - Salata (Lactuca sativa, L.) je jednogodišnja vrsta, prohladne klime koja pripada familiji Asteraceae i grupi lisnatog
povrća. Bogata je mineralima, vitaminima, antioksidantima koji su neophodni u ljudskoj ishrani. Prednost salate, kao
sirovog povrća, je da sadrži više hranljivih materija u odnosu na drugo termički obrađeno povrće. Salata ima nisku
kalorijsku vrednost i preporučuje se u ishrani dijabetičara, ljudi sa poremećenim ritmom spavanja i metabolizma.
Proizvođači su zainteresovani za gajenje salate zbog kratkog vegetacionog perioda i mogućnosti gajenja tokom cele
godine. Cilj ovog istraživanja bio je da se utvrdi uticaj mikrobiološkog đubriva Em Aktiv (Candor) na sadržaj ukupnih
fenola (TPC) kod šest sorti salate. Sorte (′Kiribati′, ′Murai′, ′Aquino′, ′Gaugin′, ′Aleppo′, ′Carmesi′- Rijk Zwaan) su
gajene na plodnom zemljištu u plasteniku tokom tri uzastopne sezone (jesen, zima i proleće). Sadržaj ukupnih fenola
kretao se u jesen između 175.85-372.73 μg GAE/g FW, u zimu 104.12-522.74 μg GAE/g FW i u proleće 88.88-340.93
μg GAE/g FW. Rezultati ukazuju da su crvene sorte uglavnom pokazale veći sadržaj ukupnih fenola u odnosu na
zelene sorte sa izuzetkom jesenjeg ogleda. Među svim sezonama, najveći sadržaj ukupnih fenola određen je u kontroli
kod sorte ′Carmesi′ (522.74 μg GAE/g FW) u zimskom ogledu. Uticaj đubriva Em Aktiv na sadržaj ukupnih fenola,
kod različitih sorti salate, u određenom opsegu bio je pozitivan u proleće i jesen pa čak i negativan tokom zime. Ovako
složen odgovor ukazuje na potrebu za pažljivim odabirom varijeteta salate i đubriva u odnosu na sezonu. Na osnovu
dobijenih rezultata može se zaključiti da su crvene sorte salate pokazale veći sadržaj ukupnih fenola i mogu se
preporučiti kao izvor bioaktivnih supstanci u zdravoj ishrani.

in human nutrition. As minimally processed food product, it is an important source of vitamins, 
minerals and various antioxidative compounds. In our greenhouse experiment, two Salanova let tuce cultivars (‘Aquino‘ RZ- green and ‘Gaugin‘ RZ- red multi-leaf butterhead) were grown in the 
fertile soil during three successive seasons (autumn, winter and spring). The aim of the study was 
to examine the effect of different microbiological fertilizers (EM Aktiv, Vital Tricho and combination 
of EM Aktiv and Vital Tricho), cultivars and growing seasons on the total phenolic content and 
peroxidase activity. Our results showed that in all seasons red cultivar ‘Gaugin‘ had higher total 
phenolic content compared to green cultivar ‘Aquino‘. Their highest level was measured in au tumn with fertilizer Vital Tricho (549.14 µg GAE g-1 FW). The elevated phenolic status of red versus 
green cultivar was further strengthened by its higher level of peroxidase with the highest activity 
measured in spring with combination of fertilizers EM Aktiv and Vital Tricho (0.43 U mg-1 prot). The 
higher peroxidase activity and content of UV-absorbing phenolics, as plant-borne substrates of 
these enzymes, in the red cultivars indicate that the red leaves are better equipped to combat 
oxidative stress. Consequently, red cultivar ‘Gaugin‘, with increased synthesis of health-promoting 
antioxidants, could be considered as functional food in human diet.

AB  - Lettuce is a cool season crop, grown worldwide and important vegetable usually used as a sal-
ad. It is rich in vitamin C, which has significant role as antioxidant, but lettuce can also accumulate
toxic compounds like nitrates. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of different
lettuce genotypes and growing seasons on the content of nitrate and vitamin C in the outer
and inner leaves. Six cultivars (‘Kiribati’ RZ, ‘Murai’ RZ, ‘Aquino’ RZ, ‘Gaugin’ RZ, ‘Aleppo’ RZ, ‘Carmesi’
RZ) were grown in the greenhouse experiment during autumn, winter and spring. Vitamin C was
determined spectrophotometrically at 550 nm and nitrate colorimetrically at 420 nm. Vitamin C
ranged between 3.64-12.41 mg per 100 g FW in autumn, 3.68-7.34 mg per 100 g FW in winter and
3.05-7.72 mg per 100 g FW in spring. Cultivar ‘Carmesi’ had the highest level of vitamin C in the
outer leaves (9.15 mg per 100 g FW) and ‘Gaugin’ in the inner leaves (12.41 mg per 100 g FW), both
in autumn. Nitrate content ranged between 258.77-908.2 mg kg-1 FW in autumn, 296.62-977.64
mg kg-1 FW in winter and 42.74-450.74 mg kg-1 FW in spring. Cultivar ‘Carmesi’ had the highest
level of nitrate in the outer leaves (977.64 mg kg -1 FW) and ‘Aleppo’ in the inner leaves (701.45 mg

RZ) were grown in the greenhouse experiment during autumn, winter and spring. Vitamin C was
determined spectrophotometrically at 550 nm and nitrate colorimetrically at 420 nm. Vitamin C
ranged between 3.64-12.41 mg per 100 g FW in autumn, 3.68-7.34 mg per 100 g FW in winter and
3.05-7.72 mg per 100 g FW in spring. Cultivar ‘Carmesi’ had the highest level of vitamin C in the
outer leaves (9.15 mg per 100 g FW) and ‘Gaugin’ in the inner leaves (12.41 mg per 100 g FW), both
in autumn. Nitrate content ranged between 258.77-908.2 mg kg-1 FW in autumn, 296.62-977.64
mg kg-1 FW in winter and 42.74-450.74 mg kg-1 FW in spring. Cultivar ‘Carmesi’ had the highest
level of nitrate in the outer leaves (977.64 mg kg -1 FW) and ‘Aleppo’ in the inner leaves (701.45 mg

AB  - Салата (Lactuca sativa L.) је једногодишња биљка из фамилије Asteraceae која припада групи лиснатог поврћа. Циљ истраживања био је да се утврди утицај микробиолошких ђубрива на принос различитих генотипова салате. Изведени су огледи у пластенику са шест сорти салате (′Kiribati′ RZ, ′Murai′ RZ, ′Aquino′ RZ, ′Gaugin′ RZ, ′Aleppo′ RZ, ′Carmesi′ RZ) током јесени уз примену микробиолошких ђубрива (Em Aktiv, Vital Tricho и њихова комбинација). Највећи принос показала је сорта ′Aquino′ у комбинацији ђубрива Em Aktiv и Vital Tricho а резултати указују да су генотип и ђубриво имали утицај на принос салате.

The aim of this study was to examine the effect of different microbiological fertilizers on the yield of various lettuce genotypes. Six lettuce cultivars (′Kiribati′ RZ, ′Murai′ RZ, ′Aquino′ RZ, ′Gaugin′ RZ, ′Aleppo′ RZ, ′Carmesi′ RZ) were grown in the greenhouse experiment during autumn with application of microbiological fertilizers (Em Aktiv, Vital Tricho and combination of Em Aktiv and Vital Tricho). Cultivar ′Aquino′ showed the highest yield with combination of Em Aktiv and Vital Tricho. Our results indicate that genotype and microbiological fertilizer affected lettuce yield.
