AB - Flower strips of French Marigold are commonly used pest repellents in potato fields. However, the effect of French Marigold volatiles on potato metabolism, physiology and induced defense is unknown. Thus, a microarray transcriptome analysis was performed to study the effects of French Marigold essential oil (EO) on laboratory-grown potato. After 8 h of exposure to EO, with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS)-detected terpinolene and limonene as dominant compounds, 2796 transcripts were differentially expressed with fold change >2 compared to expression in controls. A slightly higher number of transcripts had suppressed expression (1493 down- vs. 1303 up-regulated). Since transcripts, annotated to different photosynthesis-related processes, were mostly down-regulated, we selected a set of 10 genes involved in the leaf starch metabolism pathway, and validated microarray patterns using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Except for decreased synthesis and induced decomposition of starch granule in leaves, 8 h long EO exposure slightly elevated the accumulation of sucrose compared to glucose and fructose in subjected potato plants. An in vitro feeding bioassay with Colorado potato beetle showed that EO-induced alternations on transcriptional level and in the sugars' metabolism caused the enhancement of feeding behavior and overall development of the tested larvae. Results of comprehensive analysis of transcriptional responses in potato exposed to French Marigold EO provide a basis for further elucidation of molecular mechanisms underlying eco-physiological interactions in companion planting cropping systems.

AB - The aim of this research was to verify the authenticity of monofloral honeys from the territory of the Republic of Serbia on the basis of physicochemical parameters routinely measured in honey quality control using multivariate analysis. Seventeen samples of monofloral honey (11 samples of acacia honey and 6 samples of sunflower honey) from the territory of the Republic of Serbia were analyzed. Physicochemical analysis of the samples included the examination of basic quality parameters and qualitative and quantitative analyses of phenolic compounds. In the samples tested, a total of 93 phenolic compounds were tentatively identified, and 19 of them were quantified. The obtained physicochemical analysis of the data served as input for the multivariate analysis. The h..t map, which is useful for visualizing numerical data, was used for this purpose. The obtained results showed that the applied data can serve to clearly separate acacia and sunflower honeys.

AB - The overall aim of this paper was to compare the multielement composition and antioxidant capacity of two Montenegrin Merlot wines obtained from specific vine clones (VCR1 and VCR 101) along with commercial Merlot wine throughout the consecutive vintages in 2010 and 2011. Elemental composition was analysed using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Additionally, antioxidant capacity was assessed by cyclic voltammetry. VCR 1 wine from 2011 stood out for its elemental composition. On the other hand, antioxidant capacity of VCR 101 wines was the highest one for the both vintages. According to the experimental data obtained, all three wines are good source of essential elements and products with a significant antioxidant activity and specific geographical origin.

AB - Screens of antioxidant activity (AA) of various natural products have been a focus of the research community worldwide. This work aimed to differentiate selected samples of Merlot wines originated from Montenegro, with regard to phenolic profile and antioxidant capacity studied by survival rate, total sulfhydryl groups and activities of glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase and catalase in H2O2-stressed Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells. In this study, DPPH assay was also performed. Higher total phenolic content leads to an enhanced AA under both conditions. The same trend was observed for catechin and gallic acid, the most abundant phenolics in the examined wine samples. Finally, the findings of an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model were in a good agreement (r(2) = 0.978) with the experimental data. All tested samples exhibited a protective effect in H2O2-stressed yeast cells. Pre-treatment with examined wines increased survival in H2O2-stressed cells and shifted antioxidative defense towards GPx-mediated defense. Finally, sensitivity analysis of obtained ANN model highlights the complexity of the impact that variations in the concentrations of specific phenolic components have on the antioxidant defense system.

AB - The growth inhibition of stictic acid, a secondary metabolite isolated from the lichen Lobaria pulmonaria (L.) Hoffm. (Lobariaceae), was evaluated in vitro on three human cell lines for the first time. The cell lines HT-29 and MCF-7 were utilized for measuring the activity of stictic acid against cancer cells, while the cell line MRC-5 was selected for estimation of its effect on normal cells. The results suggest a moderate anticancer activity (IC50 value for the cell line HT-29 was 29.29 mu g/ml) and a low growth inhibition on nonmalignant cells (IC50 value for the cell line MRC-5 was 2478.40 mu g/ml) of stictic acid. This natural product can be considered as a promising lead compound for the design of novel human colon adenocarcinoma drugs.

The content of phenolic compounds was determined by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Elemental composition was analysed using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometery (ICP-OES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometery (ICP-MS)]. Additionaly, antioxidant capacity was assessed by cyclic voltammetry. Compared with the commercial one, both wine clones contained higher percent of major phenolic compounds (namely, gallic acid and catechin) with top values recorded for VCR1 both in 2010 (30.46 +/- 0.42 mg/1) and 2011 (28.12 +/- 0.29 mg/1). The same wines were enriched with epicatechin, resveratrol, myricetin and quercetin. Furthermore, VCR 1 wine from 2011 stood out for its elemental composition. On the other hand, antioxidant capacity of VCR 101 wines was the highest one for the both vintages. According to the experimental data obtained, both new Montenegrin Merlot wines represent good candidates for the commercialised wines with an indication of geographical origin.

The same wines were enriched with epicatechin, resveratrol, myricetin and quercetin. Furthermore, VCR 1 wine from 2011 stood out for its elemental composition. On the other hand, antioxidant capacity of VCR 101 wines was the highest one for the both vintages. According to the experimental data obtained, both new Montenegrin Merlot wines represent good candidates for the commercialised wines with an indication of geographical origin.",

AB - Samples of the selected red wine varieties grown in Montenegro (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Vranac; vintages 2010-2012) were compared according to total phenolic content, anti-DPPH radical activity, phenolic profile and elemental composition. All the samples showed profound anti-DPPH radical activity, due to high content of total phenolic compounds (R=0.92). The most abundant phenolics were catechin and gallic acid with the highest values recorded for Merlot 2012 (43.22 and 28.65mg/L, respectively). In addition to this, the content of essential elements including the potentially toxic ones was within healthy (safe) level for all the samples analysed. This study has actually pointed out Merlot wine variety as the best quality one, though all three varieties may be used as safe and health-promoting nutritional products. [GRAPHICS] .

AB - Covering the period 2009-2012, the quality of Merlot wines obtained from three new clone candidates (namely Nos. 022, 025 and 029, respectively; fourth phase of clonal selection) developed in the Republic of Serbia was examined. The following parameters were determined: Folin-Ciocalteu (FC) index, pH value, total acidity, volatile acids, aldehydes, esters, relative density and ash. In comparison with the standard Merlot wine (originating from mother vine), FC index (from 35.73 to 37.15) and tasting score (from 17.89 to 17.95) were higher for the wines of all three clone candidates tested. These findings are in good agreement with the observed trend for the viticultural parameters indicating better properties of the new Merlot clone candidates versus mother.

AB - This work aimed to evaluate the content of selected phenolic natural products in the wine samples made of three new Serbian Cabernet Franc clones ( Nos. 02, 010 and 012, respectively) and mother vine ( used as the relevant standard) during the period 2008-2012. Compared with all other wine samples, the Cabernet Franc wine of the clone No. 010 was found to have the highest total content of polyphenolics ( 1.85 +/- 0.02 g/L) and anthocyanins ( 178.55 +/- 3.75 mg/L). In addition, its Folin-Ciocalteu index ( 36.86 +/- 0.12) stood out among the examined samples. Finally, the same wine was enriched with ellagic and gallic acids ( 3.44 +/- 0.29 and 27.46 +/- 0.21 mg/L, respectively), catechin ( 135.16 +/- 6.47 mg/L) and epicatechin ( 51.33 +/- 2.33 mg/L), the natural products known to exert significant lipid-lowering effects. Taken all together, the clone No. 010 developed in Serbia may offer new Cabernet Franc wine with geographical indication. [GRAPHICS] .

AB - This study examines the impact of harvest date, temperature and precipitation on an accumulation of the volatile aromatic compounds in 'Cabernet Sauvignon' wine. The research was carried out in the vineyard of King Peter I Karadjordjevic, the Royal Winery in Oplenac, Serbia, during 2010 and 2011. In each year grapes were harvested twice - when the full maturity has been reached and 15 days later. Aromatic complexes of these 4 wines were analyzed using the Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and the Gas Chromatography with Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID). Higher alcohols, lactones, organic acids, esters and amides were detected in wines. Relative portions of 34 aromatic compounds were compared for the full maturity harvests in the both experimental years, as well as their change from the first to the second harvest in each year.

AB - Two volatile samples of the bryozoan Hyalinella punctata (seasonally collected from the same locality) were isolated (hydrodistillation, Clevenger apparatus), identified (GC and GC-MS) and screened in vitro (EPR) for anti-hydroxyl radical activity. The main components of sample 1 (2-ethyl-1-hexanol 37.00%, dodecanol 21.40% and hexanal 8.40%) and sample 2 (2-ethyl-1-hexanol 30.50%, 7-tridecanol 24.60% and 1-hexadecanol 11.80%) were relatively similar. However, more components were present in the sample 2 (17 and 25, respectively). EPR measurements indicated significant anti-hydroxyl radical activity of the both samples (75.00 +/- 6.00% and 87.00 +/- 8.00%, respectively) whereas the generation of other types of free radicals in reaction with hydroxyl radicals was not observed. According to the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of 31 organic compounds from the phylum Bryozoa. Alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, esters and ethers of lower molecular mass appear to be characteristic for the volatiles of these organisms commonly known as moss animals.

AB - Although the second biggest terrestrial group of plants, bryophytes remain poorly known chemically compared to the angiosperms. In this article, the sugars of the moss Rhodobryum ontariense, an unstudied representative of the medicinally known genus, are reported. The chemical analysis revealed the usual plant sugar sucrose, and a new sugar, fructooligosaccharide 1-kestose, which is reported first not only for the genus Rhodobryum, but also for mosses. The trisaccharides have been scantily reported in bryophytes hitherto. This gives more significance to this study for further investigation of its role in the moss species. The health-promoting effect of 1-kestose is also briefly discussed.

AB - The chemical composition of Rhodobryum ontariense (Kindb.) Kindb. has not been previously investigated. Fatty acids of this moss were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively with an aim to identify its corresponding pattern. A total of eight fatty acids were identified including two acetylenic ones: 9,12,15-octadecatrien-6-ynoic acid (42.26%), alpha-linolenic acid (20.32%), palmitic acid (14.31%), 9,12-octadecadienoic-6-ynoic acid (13.31%), linoleic acid (5.25%), oleic acid (2.47%), stearic acid (1.14%) and gamma-linolenic acid (0.92%). To our knowledge, this is the first record of acetylenic fatty acids in the genus Rhodobryum. In general, acetylenic fatty acids vary considerably among different moss groups and have been used as a chemotaxonomic character in bryophyte classifications. Other species of Rhodobryum from Asia have been traditionally used in ethno medicine by indigenous cultures. Two fatty acids of those reported here, 9,12,15-octadecatrien-6-ynoic and alpha-linolenic acid, have known cardio protective activity, which supports respective claims of traditional herbal use of these mosses.

AB - The continuation of our phytochemical survey of Lobaria pulmonaria (L.) Hoffm. (Lobariaceae), has led to the isolation and identification of a new lichen depsidone (1) characterised by the normal analytical and spectroscopic techniques. Unlike previously isolated depsidone (2) from the same species, the compound 1 has not showed activity in the acetylcholinesterase inhibition test on Thin-layer chromatography plate.

AB - As part of our ongoing project of new acetylcholinesterase inhibitors from lower marine and terrestrial species, a phytochemical investigation was conducted on a foliose lichen, Lobaria pulmonaria (L.) Hoffm. (Lobariaceae), from Bosnia and Herzegovina. The study led to the isolation of a mixture of acetylated depsidones which showed a moderate activity (0.5 mu g) in the acetylcholinesterase inhibition test on Thin-layer chromatography plate. Our results indicate for the first time the significance of depsidones, highly specific metabolites from lichen species, in searching for these inhibitors which still represent the best drugs currently available for the management of Alzheimer's disease.

AB - The fatty acid compositions of the moss species Atrichum undulatum (Hedw.) P. Beauv. (Polytrichaceae) and Hypnum andoi A.J.E. Sm. (Hypnaceae) collected in winter time were analysed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) as a contribution to their chemistry. Eight fatty acids were identified in the chloroform/methanol extract 1:1 of A. undulatum (linoleic acid, 26.80%, palmitic acid, 22.17%, alpha-linolenic acid, 20.50%, oleic acid, 18.49%, arachidonic acid, 6.21%, stearic acid, 3.34%, cis-5,8,11,14,17-eicosapentaenoic acid, 1.52% and behenic acid, 1.01%), while six fatty acids were found in the same type of extract of H. andoi (palmitic acid, 63.48%, erucic acid, 12.38%, stearic acid, 8.08%, behenic acid, 6.26%, lignoceric acid, 5.16% and arachidic acid, 4.64%). According to this study, the moss A. undulatum can be considered as a good source of both essential fatty acids for humans (linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid) during the winter.

AB - The identification of nystose and 1(F)-beta-fructofuranosylnystose in the oligosaccharide-rich fraction of the moss Rhodobryum ontariense (Kindb.) Kindb. (Bryaceae) by thin layer chromatography and high pressure chromatography with anion exchange-pulsed amperometric detector is discussed. According to our knowledge, it is the first record of these saccharides in the genus Rhodobryum as well as in the group of mosses as a whole. The findings are in good agreement with the recent isolation of 1-kestose from the same plant material and confirm that short-chain fructooligosaccharides, well known as prebiotics, are present in the examined bryophyte.

AB - The essential oil composition of the moss Rhodobryum ontariense obtained by hydrodistillation was preliminary analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Thirteen compounds (86.41% of the total oil) were identified. The main chemical constituents were phytol (31.95%) and 1-octen-3-ol (15.44%). Such an abundance of phytol has not yet been reported in other mosses. Four chemicals (cis-decahydronaphthalene, allo-hedycaryol, jasmone and 2,5,5,8a-tetramethyl-1,4,4a,5,6,7,8,8a-octahydronaphthalene-1-carboxylic acid, methyl ester) are first records, not only for the genus Rhodobryum and mosses in general, but also for the group of bryophytes as a whole.
