AB - Two tomato genotypes with constitutively different ABA level, flacca mutant and wild type of Ailsa Craig cv. (WT), were subjected to three repeated drought cycles, with the aim to reveal the role of the abscisic acid (ABA) threshold in developing drought tolerance. Differential responses to drought of two genotypes were obtained: more pronounced stomatal closure, ABA biosynthesis and proline accumulation in WT compared to the mutant were compensated by dry weight accumulation accompanied by transient redox disbalance in flacca. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra analysis of isolated cell wall material and morphological parameter measurements on tomato leaves indicated changes in dry weight accumulation and carbon re-allocation to cell wall constituents in flacca, but not in WT. A higher proportion of cellulose, pectin and lignin in isolated cell walls from flacca leaves further increased with repeated drought cycles. Different ABA-dependent stomatal closure between drought cycles implies that acquisition of stomatal sensitivity may be a part of stress memory mechanism developed under given conditions. The regulatory role of ABA in the cell wall restructuring and growth regulation under low leaf potential was discussed with emphasis on the beneficial effects of drought priming in developing differential defense strategies against drought.

AB - We investigated metal accumulation in bamboo leaves during three seasons at three urban locations differing in pollution levels. The higher content of Cu, Pb, and Zn in the leaves was in correlation with the highest bioavailable content of these elements in the soil at the most polluted location. The content of leaf trace elements was higher in summer and autumn compared to spring. Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy showed that Si accumulation in bamboo leaves was the highest in epidermis and vascular tissue, and was co-localized with trace metals. Analysis of phytoliths showed co-deposition of Al, C, and Si, implying the involvement of Si in metal detoxification. Compared to a common urban tree, linden, bamboo showed better capacity to maintain cellular redox homeostasis under deteriorated environmental conditions. The results suggest that bamboo can be efficiently used for biomonitoring of air and soil metal pollution and remediation in urban areas.

AB - Barium strontium titanate powder Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 (BST) has been obtained by
hydrothermal treatment of precursor solution containing titanium citrate, previously
prepared by complex polymerization method, and barium and strontium acetates.
The powders were calcined at 700 °C, pressed into pellets and further sintered at
1280 °C for a various sintering times (from 1 to 32 h), and structural parameters,
phase composition, dielectric and ferroelectric properties were investigated. Rietveld
refinement analysis of BST ceramics showed that predominant phase was tetragonal
BST with monoclinic Ba6Ti17O40 (B6T17) as a secondary phase. Phase contents
determined by Rietveld refinement match well with the results of energy dispersive
X-ray analysis and ICP analysis. SEM micrographs of sintered samples revealed the
abnormal grain growth where elongated twinned grains of BST grow in a matrix of
smaller B6T17 grains. Dielectric and ferroelectric properties of BST ceramics have
been correlated with density of sintered compacts, phase composition, structural
parameters and microstructure. The sample sintered for 16 h showed the highest
density (93% ρt), as well as the highest value of dielectric constant (~2300) and
remanent polarization – Pr (2 μC/cm2) among investigated samples.

AB - Nano- (30-60 nm) and submicron (100-350 nm) ZnO particles were synthesized using solvothermal method at 200 degrees C from an ethanolic solution of zinc acetate dihydrate, applying different reaction conditions, i.e., pH value of precursor and time of the reaction. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-vis diffuse reflectance (DR), Raman spectroscopy, and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy have been employed for characterization of synthesized ZnO powders. It was shown that the structural, morphological, and optical properties are largely determined by reaction conditions during solvothermal synthesis. The particle crystallinity improves with the decrease of pH value and/or the increase of time of the reaction. The Raman and PL spectra analyses indicate that the oxygen interstitials are dominant intrinsic defects in solvothermally synthesized ZnO powders. It was observed that concentration of defects in wurtzite ZnO crystal lattices slightly changes with the variation of pH value of the precursor and time of the solvothermal reaction. The correlation between structural ordering and defect structure of particles and corresponding growth processes was discussed.

AB - Phyllostachis bissetti was introduced to urban areas in Belgrade with the aim to improve the quality of air polluted by heavy traffic. Dust released from fuel combustion adsorbed on the leaves reaching up to 10% of leaf dry weight. Adsorbed dust was analyzed for its morphological structure, chemical content and prooxidant activity. SEM analysis of dust indicated the presence of particulate matter fractions PM10 and PM2.5. Determination of peroxidase levels (POD, EC 1.11.1.7), ascorbate concentration and total antioxidant capacity in the leaves showed that, overall, P. bissetii had high antioxidative potential to cope with oxidative stress under urban environmental conditions. Leaf protein and chlorophyll content accompanied by high growth rate of seedlings planted at different locations indicated excellent acclimatization capacity of P. bissetti to the heavily polluted urban areas.

abstract = "Phyllostachis bissetti was introduced to urban areas in Belgrade with the aim to improve the quality of air polluted by heavy traffic. Leaf protein and chlorophyll content accompanied by high growth rate of seedlings planted at different locations indicated excellent acclimatization capacity of P. bissetti to the heavily polluted urban areas.",

AB - Barium strontium titanate was obtained by hydrothermal treatment of barium strontium titanate citric precursor solution, previously prepared by complex polymerization method. The thermally induced phase evolution was followed at various temperatures up to 800 A degrees C using thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, and Raman spectroscopy. Microstructural characterization of barium strontium titanate powders was performed by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The proposed synthesis route has been proven as a better and faster method for barium strontium titanate powder preparation as compared to the conventional complex polymerization route. The method was found efficient for production of low agglomerated, fine, nanosized barium strontium titanate powder with well defined stoichiometry, and sub-micron particle size. The results of structural and microstructural characterization showed the complete crystallization of carbonate-free barium strontium titanate powder at 700 A degrees C with an average size of crystallites below 50 nm.

AB - A powder mixture of Bi2O3 and Fe2O3 was mechanically treated in a planetary ball mill in an air from 30 to 720 minutes. It was shown that the mechanochemical formation of BiFeO3 (BFO) phase was initiated after 60 min and its amount increased gradually with increasing milling time. A detailed XRPD structural analysis is realized by Rietveld's structure refinement method. The resulting lattice parameters, relative phase abundances, crystallite sizes and crystal lattice microstrains were determined as a function of milling time. Microstructural analysis showed a little difference in morphology of obtained powders. The primary particles, irregular in shape and smaller than 400 nm are observed clearly, although they have assembled together to form agglomerates with varying size and morphology. Dense BFO ceramics were prepared by conventional solid-state reaction at the temperature of 810oC for 1h followed immediately by quenching process.

AB - Structural disorder of ZnO nanopowders with mean crystallite size down to 15 nm, produced by mechanical activation in high energy mills, has been analyzed by x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The influence of such disorder on optical and electronic properties of activated ZnO nanopowders has been investigated using photoluminescence spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry. A revised interpretation of the resonant enhancement of the first and second order Raman scattering by the E-1(LO) phonons in highly disorder ZnO nanopowders has been proposed. Detailed analysis of resonant Raman effects in ZnO powders under sub band gap excitation has given valuable information about defect induced electronic states in the band gap of ZnO. Systematic trend in the electron-phonon coupling strength, with the correlation length which depends on lattice disorder in ZnO, has been also demonstrated.

AB - Ultrathin PZT film was prepared using a chemical solution deposition method from polymeric citrate precursors. The PZT solution was spin-coated on an amorphous silica layer formed on a Si(l 0 0) substrate. The films were thermally treated from the substrate side with a low heating rate (1 degrees/min) up to 700 degrees C and finally annealed for 10 h. Ultrathin PZT films without microstructural instability were prepared in spite of high temperature and long annealing time. AFM and HRTEM investigations revealed the formation of a well-developed dense microstructure consisting of spherical crystallites (4-7 nm). Low roughness (2.2 nm) of a similar to 26 nm thick layer was obtained for a two-layered PZT film. The grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD) measurements confirmed the polycrystalline structure of ultrathin PZT films. Also, GIXRD and electron energy dispersive X-ray (EDS) analysis showed that compositional variations were smaller than expected, in spite of the long annealing time.

AB - Raman scattering spectroscopy has been used for the characterization of zinc oxide nanoparticles obtained by mechanical activation in a high-energy vibro-mill and planetary ball mill. Raman modes observed in spectra of nonactivated sample are assigned to Raman spectra of the ZnO monocrystal, while the spectra of mechanically activated samples point out to the structural and stoichiometric changes, depending on the milling time and the choice of equipment. Observed redshift and peak broadening of the E2(high) and E1 (LO) first-order Raman modes are attributed to increased disorder induced by mechanical milling, followed by the effects of phonon confinement due to correlation length decrease. The additional modes identified in Raman spectra of activated ZnO samples are related to the surface optical phonon modes, due to the intrinsic surface defects and presence of ZrO(2)as extrinsic defects introduced by milling in zirconia vials.

AB - In this paper, changes of microstructural characteristics of disperse systems during mechanical activation of zinc oxide (ZnO) have been investigated. ZnO powder was activated by grinding in a planetary ball mill in a continuous regime in air during 300 min at the basic disc rotation speed of 320 rpm and rotation speed of bowls of 400 rpm but with various balls-to-powder mass ratios. During ball milling in a planetary ball mill, initial ZnO powder suffered high-energy impacts. These impacts are very strong, and large amounts of microstructural and structural defects were introduced in the milled powders. The morphology and dispersivity of particles and agglomerates of all powders were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy. The specific surface area of initial ZnO powder was determined as 3.60 m(2) g(-1) and it increased to 4.42 m(2) g(-1) in mechanically activated powders. An increase of the ball-to-powder mass ratio led to a decrease of particle dimensions as well as increased the tendency for joining into quite compact agglomerates, that is aggregates, compared with the very loose, soft initial agglomerates. The obtained results pointed out that activation of ZnO powders produces a highly disperse, nano-scaled mixture of small particles, that is crystallites with sizes in the range of 10-40 nm. Most of these particles are in the form of aggregates with dimensions of 0.3-0.1 mu m. The crystallite and aggregate size strongly depend on milling conditions, that is ball-to-powder mass ratio, as shown in this investigation.

AB - Zinc oxide nanoparticles were obtained by milling in a planetary ball mill with a zirconia milling assembly for up to 5 h in air. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy methods. The deviation of the lattice parameters from single crystal values was related to defect creation and increase of strain inside the hexagonal lattice of milled ZnO nanoparticles. The observed redshift and peak broadening of the major first-order Raman modes were ascribed to the formation of intrinsic defects by mechanical milling combined with the effects of phonon confinement in nanosized powders. To investigate the type of intrinsic defects and impurities introduced during milling, it was necessary to analyze both milled and thermally treated ZnO. After thermal treatment, the intensity of the Raman spectra increased and the peak positions reverted to values similar to those in unmilled ZnO powder, pointing to defect annihilation. XRD patterns of sintered samples confirmed the existence of zirconia impurities and the Rietveld analysis revealed a small amount of zirconium introduced in the ZnO crystal lattice on the Zn sites or interstitial sites. The large influence of those impurities on the micro-Raman spectra of thermally treated samples was observed in this study.

AB - The modified polymeric precursor method (Pechini method) was successfully used for the preparation of epitaxial and polycrystalline ferroelectric Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O-3 (PZT) thin films. Films were deposited on LaNiO3 (LNO) - coated silicium (1 0 0) and platinum substrates (Pt (1 1 1)/Ti/SiO2/Si) by spin coating technique. LNO electrodes were also prepared by the Pechini method and treated under different thermal treatment conditions to obtain films with different structural and microstructural properties. Investigation of PZT microstructure was performed as a function of orientation and morphology of the bottom electrode, as well as of thermal treatment conditions. Grain size and morphology were analyzed by AIM, while the quality and orientation of PZT films were determined by GIXRD analysis. It has been found that the proposed thermal treatment on a hot plate, with slow heating rate and long annealing time, can result in the formation of epitaxial PZT films on Si and LNO-coated Si substrates.

AB - In this paper we illustrate the change of optical properties of mechanically activated wurtzite ZnO powder and laser synthesized anatase TiO2 nanopowder due to the nonstoichiometry caused by mechanical activation and/or laser irradiation in vacuum. Both of the investigated materials are widely used in optoelectronics and the examination of their optical properties under different preparation and environmental conditions is of great practical interest.

AB - Mixtures of ZnO and SnO2 powders, with molar ratio of 2:1, were mechanically activated for 40, 80 and 160 minutes in a planetary ball mill. The resulting powders were compacted into pellets and non-isothermally sintered up to 1200 degrees C with a heating rate of 5 degrees C/min. X-ray diffraction analysis of obtained powders and sintered samples was performed in order to investigate changes of the phase composition. The microstructure of sintered samples was examined by scanning electron microscopy. The photoacoustic phase and amplitude spectra of sintered samples were measured as a function of the laser beam modulating frequency using a transmission detection configuration. Fitting of experimental data enabled determination of photoacoustic properties including thermal diffusiviiy. Based on the results obtained a correlation between thermal diffusivity and experimental conditions as well the samples microstructure characteristics was discussed.

AB - Microstructural properties of a commercial zinc oxide powder were modified by mechanical activation in a high-energy vibro-mill. The obtained powders were dry pressed and sintered at 1100 degrees C for 2 h. The electrical properties of grain boundaries of obtained ZnO ceramics were studied using an ac impedance analyzer. For that purpose, the ac electrical response was measured in the temperature range from 23 to 240 degrees C in order to determine the resistance and capacitance of grain boundaries. The activation energies of conduction were obtained using an Arrhenius equation. Donor densities were calculated from Mott-Schottky measurements. The influence of microstructure, types and concentrations of defects on electrical properties was discussed.

AB - Mechanical activation was used as a method for modification of the structural and optical properties of commercial ZnO powder. For this purpose zinc oxide powder was mechanically treated by grinding in a high-energy vibro-mill in a continual regime in air up to 300 minutes. Starting and modified ZnO samples were characterized using XRD, BET and TEM measurements. Optical properties of these samples were investigated by Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The color of commercial ZnO powder was white while mechanically activated ZnO powder was dark yellow, indicating the presence of nonstoichiometry. In the Raman spectra of non-activated sample Raman modes of bulk ZnO were observed, while the spectra of modified samples point out structural and stoichiometric changes. The PL spectra of modified samples excited by 325 and 442 nm lines of a He-Cd laser show great difference with respect to the spectra of the original sample. This study confirms that change in the defect structure of the ZnO crystal lattice introduced by mechanical activation affects the optical properties of this material.

AB - The synthesis of calcium titanate, CaTiO3, was performed by mechanical activation and thermal treatment. Milling for up to 360 minutes in a planetary ball mill mechanically activated an equimolar mixture of CaCO3 and TiO2 powders. A small amount of mechanically activated mixtures was pressed into briquettes and calcined at 850degreesC for two hours. The effect of mechanical activation on the solid-state reaction was studied using X-ray powder diffraction and differential thermal analysis. The change of morphology and size of powder particles due to milling, were determined by SEM, while BET analysis was used to determine the specific surface area of the powder. The sintering process was followed by a dilatometer during thermal treatment up to 1300degreesC. The main conclusion of the analysis of conducted investigations is that CaTiO3 ceramics can be obtained from an activated mixture at a much lower temperature than reported in the literature owing to acceleration of the chemical reaction and sintering.
