Far infrared reflectivity spectra of lead-telluride doped with Mn and Yb

AB  - PbTe single crystal samples doped with Mn and Yb were grown using the Bridgman method. Far infrared reflectivity spectra were measured at room temperature for samples with different impurity concentrations (total impurity concentration Mn+Yb varied between 0.59 and 2.52 at%, while the impurity Mn/Yb ratio varied between 0 and 3.48). All samples were of the "p" type. Plasma minimum was registered for all samples and varied between 114 and 198 cm(-1) depending on the total impurity concentration and ratio. Samples with lower plasma minimum had a higher free hole mobility, with the highest value of 7000 cm(2)/Vs determined for a sample with the highest Mn/Yb ratio of 3.48 (1.67 at.% Mn and 0.48 at.% Yb).

A plasma resonance at about 650 cm(-1) with the reflectivity minima very close to zero was observed for both samples. Thermal diffusivity was determined for the same samples using the photoacoustic method with a transmission detection configuration and the values of the minority free carrier (holes) mobility were calculated.

The experimental results were analyzed using a dielectric function taking into account the existence of plasmon-ionised impurity-phonon interactions. Together with strong coupling three infrared active lattice modes at about 143, 187 and 202 cm(-1) were observed. These results were discussed with respect to calculated literature vibrational frequencies. Electrical properties of single crystal PtSb2 were also measured at room temperature.

The experimental data were numerically analyzed using a fitting procedure based on the plasmon-phonon interaction model and optical parameters were determined. Two local modes of praseodium were observed at about 158 cm(-1) and 257 cm(-1) at room temperature. The origin of the local modes was discussed.

Since the electronic structure of the ionized state for Pd, Ni and Pt is of the same type, and the influence of cl-shells is very strong, special attention was paid to the influence of the electronic structure of dopants on the final properties PbTe and PbSnTe crystals.

AB  - Single crystal samples of PbTe and PbSnTe doped with Cr were made using the Bridgman technique. Far infrared diagrams of PbTe samples doped with 0.4 at.%, 0.8 at.% and 1 at.% Cr and also of Pb(0.9)Sn(0.1)Te doped with 0.4 at.%, 0.7 at.% and 1.1 at.% Cr are presented and numerically analyzed. Local modes were determined at about 260 cm(-1) and 480 cm(-1) for PbTe doped with Cr and at slightly higher frequencies for PbSnTe doped with Cr. The origin of the local modes was discused about the possible application of the PbSnTe + Cr alloys.

The application of lead-tin tellurides doped with rare earth elements for infrared astronomy has been discussed.

AB  - ZnO-SnO2 ceramics were prepared with a traditional powder mixed oxide route by mixing starting powders of ZnO and SnO2 in the molar ratio 2:1 and adding small amounts (0.5; 1.0; and 1.5 molar%) of Bi 2O3. These mixtures were then mechanically activated for 10 minutes in a planetary ball mill, uniaxially pressed and sintered at 1300°C for 2h. The phase composition of the sintered samples was determined with X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis and a detailed Rietveld analysis was performed. Room temperature far infrared reflectivity diagrams were obtained using Bruker 113V FTIR spectrometer and fitted with several theoretical models in other to determine parameter values for some structural and optical properties of the obtained material.

AB  - Single-phase zinc-stannate thin films of different thickness values were prepared by radio frequency magnetron sputtering on a silica substrate. Rietveld analysis of X-ray diffraction data confirmed that the films had an inverse spinel structure, with a cation inversion parameter of 0.8. Room temperature far and mid infrared reflectivity spectra were measured in the range 50-4000 cm(-1). The reflectivity diagrams were analyzed using the four-parameter model of coupled oscillators for optical phonons with a standard multi-layer technique taking into account the thin-film layer and the substrate. The optical parameters were determined for seven oscillators belonging to the spinel structure. Their origin was discussed in relation to non-stoichiometry of the thin film and cation disorder in the crystal lattice. Bom effective charges were calculated from the transversal/ longitudinal splitting.

AB  - Single crystal samples of lead telluride doped with Gd were grown using the Bridgman method. Far infrared reflectivity spectra in the temperature range from 10 K to 300 K were measured. The experimental diagrams were numerically analyzed using a fitting procedure based on the plasma-phonon interaction model and the optical parameters were determined, while two local modes of gadolinium were observed at about 155cm(-1) and 230cm(-1) at room temperature. The origin of these local vibrational impurity modes was discussed.

AB  - Mixtures of ZnO and SnO2 powders, with molar ratio of 2:1, were mechanically activated for 40, 80 and 160 minutes in a planetary ball mill. The resulting powders were compacted into pellets and non-isothermally sintered up to 1200 degrees C with a heating rate of 5 degrees C/min. X-ray diffraction analysis of obtained powders and sintered samples was performed in order to investigate changes of the phase composition. The microstructure of sintered samples was examined by scanning electron microscopy. The photoacoustic phase and amplitude spectra of sintered samples were measured as a function of the laser beam modulating frequency using a transmission detection configuration. Fitting of experimental data enabled determination of photoacoustic properties including thermal diffusiviiy. Based on the results obtained a correlation between thermal diffusivity and experimental conditions as well the samples microstructure characteristics was discussed.

This is in agreement with microstructure analvsis where longer times of mechanical activation lead to increased porosity and defects. Using group theory six ionic oscillators were calculated for single crystal Zn2SnO4 Spectra, but two more oscillators were observed in the obtained experimental spectra, which Could be the result of mechanical activation and sintering. The FIR experimental results were numerically analyzed and oscillator parameters were calculated.

AB  - Far infrared reflection spectra of NiO polycrystals sintered at 1100 degrees C for various times (30-240 min) were measured at room temperature using a FTIR Spectrometer-Brucker 113V. The measured spectra depended on the sintering time due to differences in the microstructural morphology of the material and were compared with the NiO single crystal reflectivity diagram. Numerical analyses of the experimental spectra were performed using Kramers-Kronig analysis, a four-parameter model of coupled oscillators and the effective medium modeling theory. In the three-component effective medium model based on Bruggeman's theory we assumed the presence of pores, intergranular material and crystalline grains. The intergranular material and crystalline grains were defined as single and coupled ionic oscillators.

AB  - Far-infrared reflection spectra of sintered α-MnSe were measured at room temperature. The measured spectrum had one pronounced peak in accordance with literature data and group theory estimation and one smaller peak resulting from the applied sintering procedure. The measured reflection spectrum was analyzed using Kramers - Kronig analysis and a three-component effective medium model based on Bruggeman's theory assuming the presence of a small amount of pores, dominant crystalline grains and intergranular material. In the model the crystalline grains were modeled as a single oscillator appropriate to the single crystal and the intergranular material was also defined as a single ionic oscillator.

AB  - Sintering kinetics of NiO was investigated using photoacoustic spectroscopy. This method was used to follow the change of phase and amplitude of the photoacoustic signal of nickel-oxide samples sintered at 1373 K for 15-240 min. as a function of modulation frequency of the laser beam. Fitting of experimental data enabled determination of photoacoustic properties including thermal diffusivity of sintered nickel-oxide. Analysis of the change of sample density during sintering showed that the sintering process of this material can be observed from the viewpoint of activated volume and the change of thermal diffusivity can be correlated with the change of density of this material.
