AB - From productive and ecological point of view, Quercus robur L. is an extremely important species and the investigation of its anatomical properties is very significant in terms of its technical and technological utilization. The paper deals with the analysis of the wood fiber characteristics (fiber length, fiber lumen width, double-cell wall thickness, Runkel ratio) of mature pedunculate oak trees in the non-flooded (Management Unit "Vinična-Žeravinac-Puk") and flooded area (Management Unit "GVO 83 b"). One of the aims of the study is to determine the wood fiber quality and the possibility of use in paper and pulp production. When the mean values of the analysed anatomical characteristics are compared, the results show slightly higher values in the non-flooded area, except for the Runkel ratio. The radial pattern of the investigated characteristics depending on the age shows growth in the non-flooded area, while the same tendency in the flooded area was found for the fiber length only. It was recorded that fiber lumen width, double-cell wall thickness and Runkel ratio decreased in the final annual rings. The wood fiber quality for use in pulp and paper production is the greatest in the juvenile zone, unlike sapwood zone, regardless of the site conditions.

AB - Silicon (Si) is a widely recognized beneficial element in plants. With the emergence of nanotechnology in agriculture, silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) demonstrate promising applicability in sustainable agriculture. Particularly, the application of SiNPs has proven to be a high-efficiency and cost-effective strategy for protecting plant against various biotic and abiotic stresses such as insect pests, pathogen diseases, metal stress, drought stress, and salt stress. To date, rapid progress has been made in unveiling the multiple functions and related mechanisms of SiNPs in promoting the sustainability of agricultural production in the recent decade, while a comprehensive summary is still lacking. Here, the review provides an up-to-date overview of the synthesis, uptake and translocation, and application of SiNPs in alleviating stresses aiming for the reasonable usage of SiNPs in nano-enabled agriculture. The major points are listed as following: (1) SiNPs can be synthesized by using physical, chemical, and biological (green synthesis) approaches, while green synthesis using agricultural wastes as raw materials is more suitable for large-scale production and recycling agriculture. (2) The uptake and translocation of SiNPs in plants differs significantly from that of Si, which is determined by plant factors and the properties of SiNPs. (3) Under stressful conditions, SiNPs can regulate plant stress acclimation at morphological, physiological, and molecular levels as growth stimulator; as well as deliver pesticides and plant growth regulating chemicals as nanocarrier, thereby enhancing plant growth and yield. (4) Several key issues deserve further investigation including effective approaches of SiNPs synthesis and modification, molecular basis of SiNPs-induced plant stress resistance, and systematic effects of SiNPs on agricultural ecosystem.

AB - In this paper, we have systematically studied the structural, morphological, and optical properties of Ni-doped TiO2, synthesized via a simple, cost-effective electrospinning method followed by calcination at 500 C. The nanofibers with a core-shell structure were relatively homogeneous, smooth and randomly oriented, and there were no significant differences in fiber diameters due to Ni2+ content. Core loss mapping using electron energy loss spectroscopy confirmed an even distribution of titanium and relatively uniform nickel in the fibers. It was found that doping with 0.5 mol.% Ni2+ decreased the rutile content, while doping with 1 mol.% Ni2+ resulted in a pure anatase phase with a significantly increased specific surface area (36.6 m2/g). Further increase in Ni2+ content (3-10 mol.%) not only prolonged the response of TiO2 nanofibers to visible light, but also increased the specific surface area (49.5 m2/g), decreased crystallite size (7 nm), and increased rutile content in TiO2 (33 wt.%). Photoluminescence analysis revealed that doping TiO2 with different amounts of Ni2+ leads to a gradual decrease of emission spectra intensity and red shift in the maxima positions. The XPS results confirmed that as the Ni2+ content enlarged, the Ti2+ and Ti3+ content increased significantly, effectively promoting the formation of oxygen vacancies. Raman analysis showed that an increase in nickel content (3-5 mol.%) led to a decrease and shift in peak intensity due to Ti3+ formation and also the possible presence of NiTiO3 phases. HRTEM analysis showed that Ni was doped into the substitution sites of both the anatase and rutile TiO2 lattice but had a stronger influence on the distortion of the anatase phase. The obtained results indicate that Ni-doped TiO2 nanofibers are good candidates for photocatalytic applications.

AB - Elevated concentrations of heavy metals result in soil degradation, a reduction in plant
yields, and a lower quality of agricultural products, which directly endangers people, animals, and
the ecosystem. The potential of three clones of Salix alba (347, NS 73/6, and B-44) and one genotype of
S. viminalis for the phytoextraction of heavy metals was investigated, with the aim of identifying the
most physiologically suitable willow genotypes for use in soil phytoremediation. The experiment was
placed on the contaminated soil substrate collected in Kolubara Mining Basin (Serbia), enriched by
high loads of heavy metal salts, and a control medium. Significant differences in the concentrations
of heavy metals were recorded between the contaminated and control plant material, especially
when it comes to nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb), confirming that S. alba and
S. viminalis are hyperaccumulator species of heavy metals. Clone 347 shows the greatest uptake of
Cd and chromium (Cr), and clone B-44 takes up these metals only to a lesser extent, while clone
NS 73/6 shows a less pronounced uptake of Cr. The roots have the greatest ability to accumulate
Ni and Pb, Cu is absorbed by all plant organs, while Cd is absorbed by the leaves. The organ that
showed the greatest ability to accumulate heavy metals was the root, which means that willows have
a limited power to translocate heavy metals to above-ground organs. The studied genotypes of S. alba
have a higher potential for the phytostabilization of Cu and Cd, as well as the phytoextraction of
Cd, compared with S. viminalis. The results confirm the assumption of differences between different
willow genotypes in terms of the ability to phytoextract certain heavy metals from soil, which is
important information when selecting genotypes for soil phytoremediation.

yields, and a lower quality of agricultural products, which directly endangers people, animals, and
the ecosystem.

AB - Ni foam is an extensively used current collector and substrate in investigations of electrochemically active materials such as supercapacitors and electrocatalysts for oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions. This material is relatively cheap, porous, and conductive and has a large specific surface area, all of which make it a good substrate. We investigated Ni-Mg ferrites and NiMn2O4 as active materials for electrochemical energy storage. These materials, when loaded on Ni foam, gave promising capacitance values: 172 F/g (at 2 mV/s) for NiMn2O4 in 6 M KOH and 242 F/g (at 2 mV/s) for MgFe2O4 in 3 M KOH. Nevertheless, during the authors’ work, many experimental problems occurred. Inconsistencies in the results directed further investigation towards measuring the capacitance of the active materials using GCE and platinum electrodes as substrates to discover if Ni foam was the culprit of the inconsistencies. When non-nickel substrates were used, both NiMn2O4 and MgFe2O4 showed reduced capacitance. Experimental problems associated with the utilization of Ni foam as a substrate for active materials in supercapacitor electrodes are discussed here, combined with other problems already addressed in the scientific literature

AB - In the paper was analysed the influence of three different container types, used for
cultivation of Pinus nigra and Pinus sylvestris seedlings, on dimensions of their anatomical
(resin ducts width, resin ducts number, tracheid number, tracheid width, wood rays height) and
morphological (height, root collar diameter, sturdiness coefficient) elements, and on proportion
of wood, bark and pith, as well. Two-factorial ANOVA showed that container type affects a lot
all investigated anatomical traits by both species, but on the other side, these species varied
between each other just in terms of tracheid width and wood rays height. Based on descriptive
statistics, significantly lower values of all studied anatomical elements were recorded by
biodegradable compared to plastic containers. As for P. nigra seedlings, they showed the best
anatomical performance in Plantagrah I, while Hiko V-120 SS was the most suitable for
P. sylvestris. The highest proportion of pith and bark was recorded in biodegradable container.
As for morphological parameters, such as height and root collar diameter, higher values were
recorded by plastic containers.

AB - BACKGROUND
Fungi absorb and solubilize a broad spectrum of heavy metals such as vanadium (V), which makes them a main route of its entry into the biosphere. V as vanadate (V5+) is a potential medical agent due to its many metabolic actions such as interaction with phosphates in the cell, and especially its insulin-mimetic activity. Antidiabetic activity of V-enriched fungi has been studied in recent years, but the biological and chemical bases of vanadium action and status in fungi in general are poorly understood, with almost no information on edible fungi.
METHODS
This manuscript gives a deeper insight into the interaction of V5+ with Coprinellus truncorum, an edible autochthonous species widely distributed in Europe and North America. Vanadium uptake and accumulation as V5+ was studied by 51V NMR, while the reducing abilities of the mycelium were determined by EPR. 31P NMR was used to determine its effects on the metabolism of phosphate compounds, with particular focus on phosphate sugars identified using HPLC.
RESULTS
Vanadate enters the mycelium in monomeric form and shows no immediate detrimental effects on intracellular pH or polyphosphate (PPc) levels, even when applied at physiologically high concentrations (20 mM Na3VO4). Once absorbed, it is partially reduced to less toxic vanadyl (V4+) with notable unreduced portion, which leads to a large increase in phosphorylated sugar levels, especially glucose-1-phosphate (G1P) and fructose-6-phosphate (F6P).
CONCLUSIONS
Preservation of pH and especially PPc reflects maintenance of the energy status of the mycelium, i.e., its tolerance to high V5+ concentrations. Rise in G1P and F6P levels implies that the main targets of V5+ are most likely phosphoglucomutase and phosphoglucokinase(s), enzymes involved in early stages of G6P transformation in glycolysis and glycogen metabolism. This study recommends C. truncorum for further investigation as a potential antidiabetic agent.

AB - Complex impedance spectra at room temperature in the frequency range of 8 Hz—5 MHz were measured on freshly cut leaf sections of the Aloe vera plant by AC impedance spectroscopy. They were analyzed using a classical 'brickwork' equivalent circuit composed of grain and grain boundary contributions commonly applied to solid-state materials. The obtained grain resistance/capacitance was 0.4 MΩ/72 pF and grain boundary resistance/ capacitance was 66.4 MΩ/50 nF. The determined conductivity changed according to the Jonscher power law with σDC of 4.02 · 10–5 (Ωm)−1 and frequency constant of 0.92 characteristic for hopping as the conduction mechanism. Analysis of dielectric permittivity and electric modulus confirmed the non-Debye relaxation behavior. Nyquist plots for electric modulus revealed conductivity relaxation in the low frequency attributed to grain boundaries and impedance modulus displayed dielectric relaxation in the high frequency region associated with grains. A correlation has been established among the investigated parameters, morphology, and EIS-derived simulated parameters.

AB - The impact of pruning techniques on the plant growth, yield components and fruit quality
traits of substrate-grown highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) cultivar 'Bluecrop'
were evaluated over four years (2019-2022). The orchard was planted in the village of Gruža
(Knić municipality, Serbia) in the spring of 2017 with 5-year-old nursery plants using 113 l
polypropylene pots spaced 0.8 m apart in a row and 3.0 m between rows (4,170 plants/ha). At
the onset of the trial the ‘Bluecrop’ plants were 8 years old. The two pruning techniques were
applied: i) conventional pruning (CP) - removal of the most unproductive canes at the center
of the canopy, and weak and excessively fruiting shoots from the top of bushes, and ii)
sectorial pruning (SP) - only removal of basal canes in ¼ of the canopy each year. The
average number of basal canes per bush was significantly lower in SP than in the CP
treatment (14.4 vs. 17.4 canes bush-1
, respectively). SP plants had thinner canes than CP
plants, which increased over the years of the study and reached a maximum diameter of 11.12
mm in 2022. CP had a positive influence on fruit yield (5.98 kg bush-1
), which was associated
with a 20% higher number of fruits per bush than in sectorial pruned plants. The fruit yield
increased in the first three years of the study, reaching a maximum value in 2021 (7.57 kg per
bush), whereas an opposite trend was observed in average fruit weight over the years, with the
lowest value reached in the last harvest year (1.81 g). Fruit weight and soluble solids content
were not affected by the pruning method, while the content of total acids, total anthocyanins
and total phenolics were significantly higher in fruit harvested from the SP treatment (0.70%,
37.04 mg eq mvd-3-G /100 g FW and 1.18 mg eq GA/g FW, respectively) along with the total
antioxidant capacity (8.39 mg eq AsA /g FW).

AB - Pharmaceutical and industrial utilization of synthetic chemicals has an immerse impact
on the environment. In that sense, novel chemicals with potential for industrial
application should be investigated for their behavior in reactions with hydroxyl radical,
simulating AOPs (Advanced Oxidation Processes). AOPs are known for being highly
effective in wastewater management and natural water remediation. In this paper,
exhaustive research on the radical scavenging activity of a newly synthesized
coumarin derivative (4HCBH), as a representative of the series of coumarin-
benzohydrazides with high antioxidative potential was conducted. This study took into
consideration the pH value range significant for practically all living organisms (pH=7.0-
8.5). According to the experimentally obtained results, the 4HCBH showed an increase
in radical scavenging activity, following the slight increase in pH values, which
suggested that the formation of anionic form of 4HCBH is responsible for its antiradical
activity. Further investigations led to the postulation of a novel mechanistic approach
called Sequential Proton Loss Electron Transfer – Radical-Radical Coupling (SPLET-
RRC), in which, by a series of steps, a new, stable compound was formed.
Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the product generated through SPLET-RRC
showed lower toxicity than the parent molecule.

AB - The region of Northern Kosovo and Metohija
is rich in wild-growing geophytes, many of which
have potential for ornamental use. However, the
knowledge about the distribution, abundance, and
potential of these species for the horticultural indus try is limited. This study is based on our own re search conducted continuously in the region of the
northern Kosovo and Metohija, from 2003 to 2023,
as well as on a small number of relevant literature
sources and floristic data. This study aimed to eval uate the ornamental potential of wild-growing geo phytes in the investigated area and to provide rec ommendations for their sustainable exploitation.
The study recommends the protection of species
covered by CITES convention and IUCN Red List
of Threatened species. Using wild-growing geo phytes as ornamental plants can contribute to the
conservation of biodiversity in the region while
providing economic benefits through their commer cial cultivation.

AB - Summer therophyte Impatiens glandulifera Royle (Himalayan balsam, family
Balsaminaceae) originates from a narrow zone in the foothills of the Western Himalaya, where it
is used in traditional medicine. For almost two centuries it has been colonizing nutrient enriched
(mainly with nitrogen and phosphorus) lowland alluvial habitats outside of its native range, and
is currently considered a problematic intruder which causes decrease of plant diversity, promotes
soil erosion and hampers nutrient cycling. This plant species has been classified as invasive in
over 30 countries around the world, and considered one of top invaders of the European Union
concern1
. In Serbia, it is still rather rare, classified as “sporadically invasive”. However, in an
isolated mountainous habitat of the Sirinić valley (Kosovo and Metohija), naturally oligotrophic
and atypical for this species, we have recently registered numerous and well developed stands of
Himalayan balsam, predominantly in the alluvium of the Lepenac river and its tributaries (up to
the elevation of 1200 m a.s.l.) 2
.
We shall present the joint analysis of distribution mapping of the invader, its life history
traits (height, stem diameter, aboveground dry weight), characteristics of the invaded domicile
vegetation and concomitant soil properties, supplemented by the local knowledge on this species.
22
Himalayan balsam (vernacular name “pucavac” among the Serbian population) in the study area
escaped from the gardens soon after deliberate introduction as an ornamental plant in the early
1970’s. Its further spread and successful establishment has been enabled by drastic
anthropogenic landscape change and habitat degradation, primarily through severe deforestation
of riparian vegetation coupled with the pronounced soil eutrophication by direct discharge of
household wastewaters in the local river system. Interestingly, this species was able to
sporadically occur, but not to get established in undisturbed natural vegetation like meadows or
riparian forests. Thus, though the largest individuals of this intruder, implying its strongest
potential for further spread, consistently occurred in the most degraded vegetation (with the
lowest species diversity), our results suggest that under the current conditions this decorative,
nectar producing species might substitute nitrophiles like stinging nettle in the secondary
vegetation. Much severe risk might be the overall indifference of the younger population (under
the age of 30 years), who do not recognize or even notice this rather conspicuous species, what
indicates a general trend of erosion of traditional ecological knowledge in the study area.

AB - Monocots and dicots differ in their boron (B) requirement, but also in their capacity to accumulate silicon (Si). Although an ameliorative effect of Si on B toxicity has been reported in various crops, differences among monocots and dicots are not clear, in particular in light of their ability to retain B in the leaf apoplast. In hydroponic experiments under controlled conditions, we studied the role of Si in the compartmentation of B within the leaves of wheat (Triticum vulgare L.) as a model of a high-Si monocot and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) as a model of a low-Si dicot, with the focus on the leaf apoplast. The stable isotopes 10B and 11B were used to investigate the dynamics of cell wall B binding capacity. In both crops, the application of Si did not affect B concentration in the root, but significantly decreased the B concentration in the leaves. However, the application of Si differently influenced the binding capacity of the leaf apoplast for excess B in wheat and sunflower. In wheat, whose capacity to retain B in the leaf cell walls is lower than in sunflower, the continuous supply of Si is crucial for an enhancement of high B tolerance in the shoot. On the other hand, the supply of Si did not contribute significantly in the extension of the B binding sites in sunflower leaves.

AB - Systematic analysis of electrical characteristics of BaCe0.75In0.25O3-δ (BCI25) sintered sample was performed in a
dry and a wet argon atmosphere in the 250 ◦C–700 ◦C temperature range. The water vapor sensing properties of
BCI25 porous film and its response and recovery times were investigated under different conditions of temperature
and water vapor concentration. The 30 μm thick film obtained from the powder calcined at 1050 ◦C
exhibited sensitivity comparable to that of the sintered sample with a significantly shorter response and recovery
times. While the sensitivity of the film gradually decreased with a decrease in partial pressure of water vapor (p
(H2O)), a noticeable sensitivity was still observed at p(H2O) of 200 Pa. Decrease in conductivity depended
logarithmically on the partial pressure of water with the slope of 0.52 that is close to the theoretical value. After
several cycles, the reusability test proved an almost unchanged ratio between the impedance value in the dry and
the wet Ar atmosphere (p(H2O) = 2.34 kPa), which implied that BCI25, having good stability and sensitivity, is a
promising high-temperature humidity sensor.

AB - Pure phase orthorhombic pseudobrookite (Fe2TiO5) was synthesized using a
modified sol-gel method. Bulk samples were obtained by uniaxial pressing of the
obtained powder into compacts sintered at 900 oC for 2 h. A noticeable NTC
thermistor effect was noted with a B20/55 value of 5747 K and high resistivity of 45
Mcm at 25 oC. A non-linear current-voltage characteristic was observed in the
voltage range (0.2–1100 V) at room temperature (25 oC). Non-saturated (lossy) P-E
loops were obtained at both measured frequencies (100 Hz and 1 kHz) more
expressed for the higher measured frequency, with the maximal polarization of
0.291 mikroC/cm2 and remanent polarization of 0.123 mikroC/cm2 for 20 kV/cm2 and 1 kHz.
Complex impedance measured in the temperature range 20–330 oC enabled analysis
of the contribution of grain boundary and grains to the conduction mechanism. Bulk
conductivity data determined in this temperature range was analyzed using
Jonscher’s universal dielectric response model and showed that the conduction
process followed the nearest neighbor hopping conduction mechanism.

AB - In this work, titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanofibers doped with 0.5–5 mol%
zirconium ions (Zr4+) were synthesized by combining the sol-gel process and
electrospinning method, and calcined at 500 °C. The morphological, structural and
optical properties of pure and Zr-doped TiO2 nanofibers were investigated. According to
the XRD and FTIR analyses, the addition of Zr as a dopant suppressed the
transformation of anatase to rutile phase. Scanning electron microscopy showed that all
fibers were smooth, fragile and randomly oriented after the calcination process. HRTEM
analysis revealed that Zr4+ ions were incorporated at the substitutional sites in the anatase
TiO2 crystalline lattice. The photocatalytic efficiency for degradation of methylene blue
(MB) was examined for both pure and Zr-doped TiO2 samples. Nanofibers doped with
1% of Zr4+ ions have shown the highest photocatalytic activity of 98%, wich can be
explained by considering lower PL intensity in the PL spectrum of this sample,
indicating suppressed electron-hole recombination.

AB - Mixed spinel ferrites MgxNi1-xFe2O4 were synthesized via sol-gel combustion synthesis with citric acid as fuel, followed by calcination at 700 °C for 3 hours. Obtained powders were characterized via X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), X-ray photoelectron (XPS), FTIR and Raman spectroscopy and FESEM microscopy. Elemental composition was examined via energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Humidity sensing properties were tested by measuring AC impedance in a climactic chamber at 25 °C and in the relative humidity range of 40–90%. Temperature sensing properties were tested by measuring DC resistance at 40% RH in the temperature range 40–90 °C. Synthesized powders were proven to be pure spinel Fd 3m phase with spherical, slightly agglomerated particles. Substitution of Mg with Ni results in structural changes such as a change in inversion parameter and particle agglomeration, which influences sensing properties of the material. Results show that the sensing properties of magnesium ferrite can be improved by incorporating 10% of nickel in the spinel lattice structure. Mg0.9Ni0.1Fe2O4 exhibited higher temperature sensitivity and higher sensitivity towards humidity compared to MgFe2O4, while further substitution of Mg with Ni resulted in the decline of sensing properties, increase in particle size and agglomeration degree.

reducing or stabilizing agents compared to toxic chemical compounds. These biological
substances also behave as capping agents, which control the size and shape of the
nanoparticles. In this work, ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) have been prepared via a simple, low
cost and ecofriendly method using citrus fruit peel and extracts as biological reducing agents.
Zinc nitrate and zinc acetate were used as a source of zinc ions.XRD analysis revealed the
formation of a ZnO wurtzite phase without impurities. Synthesized ZnO NPs with an average
electronic band gap ∼3 eV were obtained and found to have round-like, hexagonal-like or
needle-like structures depending on precursor type. EDS analysis showed a homogeoneous
distribution in Zn and O elements, attributed to single-phase ZnO constituents. Antibacterial
and antioxidant activities of synthesized NPs were evaluated. Obtained results showed that
ZnO synthesized from nitrate precursors are more effective in inhibiting growth of
Salmonella and Staphylococcus Aureus. Antioxidant activity of ZnO NPs determined using
CUPRAC and ABTS assays showed higher activity of ZnO obtained using nitrate precursors.
The maximum scavenging activity of 90% was observed at the concentration of 10 mg/ml

AB - BaCe0.9Y0.1O3–δ has been known as one of the best proton conducting electrolyte, which enables its application in intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFC) operating between 500 °C and 700 °C. The main disadvantage of this material is its instability in a CO2-rich atmosphere that limits its application with respect to fuel selection. Therefore, many attempts has been made to improve its stability by replacing yttrium with other dopants, or by co-doping.
In this study, we compared BaCe0.9Y0.1O3–δ and BaCe0.85Y0.1M0.05O3–δ (M = {In, Zr, Nb}) electrolytes by taking into consideration the dopant properties (primarily the valence, electronegativity and ionic radius) and how they influenced the microstructure, conductivity and chemical stability of doped BaCeO3. The samples were synthesized by the citric-nitric autocombustion method. BaCe0.85Y0.1In0.05O3–δ was sintered at 1400 °C for 5 h in air, while the temperature of 1550 °C was required for the other materials to complete the sintering. This makes the doping with In a preferable method since sintering temperatures above 1500 °C can lead to a certain materials degradation resulting in BaO loss. The total conductivities (σ) measured at 700 °C in wet hydrogen decreased in the following order:
BaCe0.9Y0.1O3–δ > BaCe0.85Y0.1Zr0.05O3–δ > BaCe0.85Y0.1Nb0.05O3–δ > BaCe0.85Y0.1In0.05O3–δ. By comparing the stability of the ceramics exposed to a 100% CO2 atmosphere at 700 °C for 5 h and examined by X-ray analysis, it was observed that only BaCe0.85Y0.1In0.05O3–δ could sustain the aggressive environment. The exposed sample contained only traces of secondary phases, while the other compositions were partially or significantly decomposed. By taking into account the values of the Goldschmidt tolerance factor (t) and dopant electronegativity

AB - In this study, we tried various cation substitutions at Bi-site (La3+, Eu3+) and Fesite (Nb5+
, Zr4+
) to explore their possible synergism and improvement of the
ferroelectric properties of bismuth ferrite. The cations with higher valence ought to
suppress the formation of structural defects during syntheses, such as oxygen and
bismuth vacancies. These defects are responsible for high leakage currents and low
breakdown voltages characteristic of pure BiFeO3. On the other hand, rare earth
cations at the Bi-site usually enable densification of the ceramics at a broader range
of temperatures, preventing bismuth loss and formation of defects and secondary
phases during sintering. However, dopant concentrations above 10–15 mol% may
give rise to a transition from polar, rhombohedral (R3c) to non-polar, orthorhombic
(Pnma) symmetry.
Thus, we synthesized pure and selected compositions doped BiFeO3 by a hydroevaporation method and determined the optimal calcination temperature by thermal
analyses of the precursor powders. Then we characterized ceramics samples using
X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and
polarization techniques. Although only 1 mol% Nb5+ decreased the leakage current,
it surprisingly deteriorated the ferroelectric properties of BiFeO3. Similar effect
exhibited the samples containing Zr4+ that showed no improvement compared with
undoped bismuth ferrite. On the contrary, La3+ and Eu3+ (incorporated at the Bi-site)
improved the ferroelectric properties as their concentrations increased, whereby the
samples doped with 15 mol% La exhibited higher remnant electric polarizations at
observed electric fields. The highest remnant electric polarization of 31.9 µC/cm2
at 150 kV/cm, was measured for Bi0.85La0.15Fe0.998Zr0.002O3, indicating the synergetic
effect of La3+ and Zr4+, which is limited to low Zr4+ concentrations.

abstract = "In this study, we tried various cation substitutions at Bi-site (La3+, Eu3+) and Fesite (Nb5+
, Zr4+
) to explore their possible synergism and improvement of the
ferroelectric properties of bismuth ferrite.
