AB - In this study, we tried various cation substitutions at Bi-site (La3+, Eu3+) and Fesite (Nb5+
, Zr4+
) to explore their possible synergism and improvement of the
ferroelectric properties of bismuth ferrite. The cations with higher valence ought to
suppress the formation of structural defects during syntheses, such as oxygen and
bismuth vacancies. These defects are responsible for high leakage currents and low
breakdown voltages characteristic of pure BiFeO3. On the other hand, rare earth
cations at the Bi-site usually enable densification of the ceramics at a broader range
of temperatures, preventing bismuth loss and formation of defects and secondary
phases during sintering. However, dopant concentrations above 10–15 mol% may
give rise to a transition from polar, rhombohedral (R3c) to non-polar, orthorhombic
(Pnma) symmetry.
Thus, we synthesized pure and selected compositions doped BiFeO3 by a hydroevaporation method and determined the optimal calcination temperature by thermal
analyses of the precursor powders. Then we characterized ceramics samples using
X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and
polarization techniques. Although only 1 mol% Nb5+ decreased the leakage current,
it surprisingly deteriorated the ferroelectric properties of BiFeO3. Similar effect
exhibited the samples containing Zr4+ that showed no improvement compared with
undoped bismuth ferrite. On the contrary, La3+ and Eu3+ (incorporated at the Bi-site)
improved the ferroelectric properties as their concentrations increased, whereby the
samples doped with 15 mol% La exhibited higher remnant electric polarizations at
observed electric fields. The highest remnant electric polarization of 31.9 µC/cm2
at 150 kV/cm, was measured for Bi0.85La0.15Fe0.998Zr0.002O3, indicating the synergetic
effect of La3+ and Zr4+, which is limited to low Zr4+ concentrations.

AB - With the significant loss of biodiversity in the 20th and 21st century, pollution of air, soil, and water, alternatives to chemical pesticides are needed to preserve nature. One of the alternatives is the usage of plant components as pest insect control. They are an appropriate alternative to chemical pesticides as they are cost-effective, easy, and safe to use, do not affect the environment or beneficial insects negatively, and are still an effective measure against pest insects. The biggest challenge with plant components is that they are biologically unstable. That is why further insight into the effectiveness of different extracts and oils against different pest insects is needed. We tested the antifeedant activity of plant products derived from neem (Azadirachta indica A.Juss.), and linalool on the Spongy moth (Lymantria dispar L, 1758) larvae. To test the efficiency of these compounds, we conducted choice tests in laboratory conditions. Two disks (treatment and control) cut from red oak (Quercus rubra L.) leaves were presented to the second instar spongy moth larvae in Petri dishes for the testing. Twenty-five Petri dishes were used for each of the tested compounds at four concentrations (200 in total). The tested compounds showed the most significant effect at higher concentrations.

AB - In this study, we report the influence of vanadium oxide (VO), as a photosensitive component, on the photoactivity of TiO2 nanotubes (TNTs). A series of TNTs of varying tube diameter were synthesized by the anodization of titanium foils at different voltages, while vanadium oxide was deposited on TNTs by wet chemical deposition. An improvement in the optical properties of nanotubes was observed after the deposition of vanadium oxide. An improvement in the optical properties (redshift in UV-Vis spectra) of TNTs and TNT/VO was noted. The photocatalytic activity was improved with increasing tube diameter, while it was weakened after the deposition of VO. Furthermore, photoactivity was investigated in photodiodes based on TNTs or TNT/VO and single crystals of CH3NH3PbI3. The photoelectric measurement revealed that different TNT diameters did not influence the I-V characteristic of the photodiodes, while the deposition of VO improved the photocurrent for smaller TNTs

AB - Efficiency of a semiconductor catalyst is directly correlated to its surface to
which a reactant species is adsorbed. There are several ways to optimize the active
surface, such as synthesis, processing or any aftertreatment of a photocatalytic
material. Our research was focused on modifying the existing sonochemically
assisted synthesis of bismuth vanadate.
Two optimization methods were used in order to increase specific surface of the
photocatalyst and number of its active sites. The first method was to change
concentration of reactants used in the synthesis to reduce agglomeration of bismuth
vanadate. Sonochemically assisted synthesis was performed with three different
concentrations of reactants to observe agglomeration tendency of the catalyst. The
other method included the use of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as a surfactant in
synthesis at highest concentration in order to hinder the particle growth.
Bismuth vanadate was shown to degrade mordant blue 9 dye (MB9) most
effectively in alkaline medium (pH = 13) under visible light, discoloring the solution
in under 2 hours, while the highest adsorption of MB9 is observed in acidic solution
(pH = 1).

AB - Due to the inability of conventional wastewater treatment procedures to remove organic
pharmaceutical pollutants, active pharmaceutical components remain in wastewater and even reach
tap water. In terms of pharmaceutical pollutants, the scientific community focuses on -blockers due
to their extensive (over)usage and moderately high solubility. In this study, the photocatalytic activity
of V2O5 was investigated through the degradation of nadolol (NAD), pindolol (PIN), metoprolol
(MET), and their mixture under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation in water. For the preparation of V2O5,
facile hydrothermal synthesis was used. The structural, morphological, and surface properties
and purity of synthesized V2O5 powder were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM),
X-ray, and Raman spectroscopy. SEM micrographs showed hexagonal-shaped platelets with welldefined
morphology of materials with diameters in the range of 10–65 μm and thickness of around
a few microns. X-ray diffraction identified only one crystalline phase in the sample. The Raman
scattering measurements taken on the catalyst confirmed the result of XRPD. Degradation kinetics
were monitored by ultra-fast liquid chromatography with diode array detection. The results showed
that in individual solutions, photocatalytic degradation of MET and NAD was relatively insignificant
(<10%). However, in the PIN case, the degradation was significant (64%). In the mixture, the
photodegradation efficiency of MET and NAD slightly increased (15% and 13%). Conversely, it
reduced the PIN to the still satisfactory value of 40%. Computational analysis based on molecular and
periodic density functional theory calculations was used to complement our experimental findings.
Calculations of the average local ionization energy indicate that the PIN is the most reactive of all
three considered molecules in terms of removing an electron from it.

AB - Manganese doped SrTiO3 powders with various manganese dioxide weight percentages in the range of 1.5, 3 and 6 wp% were prepared by a solid-state method in the presence of mechanical activation (10, 30 and 120 minutes). A systematic investigation by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), particle size analisys (PSA), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) methods and Raman spectroscopy has been undertaken to evaluate the role of dopants on the microstructural and morphological study of the perovskite oxide obtained. The optical properties of the different manganese doped and activated SrTiO3 powders have been also evaluated. Mn insertion in SrTiO3 is discussed considering the possibility for Mn ions to occupy both Ti4+ and Sr2+ sites as well as manganese segregation and Mn incorporation-related non-homogeneities. The results demonstrated that Mn has substituted into the lattice and surface layers of the particles of SrTiO3 powders and the absorption onset shifted to higher values of wavelengths with increasing time of activation and dopant concentration. The lowest value of the band gap (Eg=3.10 eV) was registered with the longest activation for 120 minutes and the highest concentration of dopant (6 wp%). Combining doping with mechanical activation lower values of band gap can be achieved and that fact could be used in subsequent studies to make Mn-SrTiO3 more suitable visible-light photocatalysts.

AB - BiFeO3 is one of the few multiferroic perovskites that exhibits magnetic and ferroelectric properties
at room temperature. However, it is also distinguished by high leakage current, low remnant electric
and magnetic polarization, and high electric coercive field. These features keep it away from any practical
use in electronics. Therefore, many attempts have been made to improve the properties of BiFeO3 by
Bi- or Fe-site doping or by both. Previous investigations suggest that doping with Nbat Fe-site can
positively affect the magnetic behavior of BiFeO3 and decrease the leakage current.
In this study, various cation substitutions at Bi-site (La3+, Eu3+) and Fe-site (Nb5+, Zr4+) were examined
to investigate their possible synergism and benefit for the ferroelectric properties. The role of the cations
with higher valence is to suppress the formation of structural defects during synthesis, such as oxygen
and bismuth vacancies. These defects are responsible for high leakage currents and, consequently, low
breakdown voltages characteristic of the pure BiFeO3. On the other hand, rare earth cations at the Bisite
usually enable densification of the ceramics in a wider range of temperatures, preventing bismuth
loss and forming defects and secondary phases during sintering. However, do pant concentrations above
10–15mol% may give rise to transition from polar, rhombohedral (R3c) to non-polar, orthorhombic
(Pnma) symmetry.
The carefully selected compositions of doped BiFeO3 were synthesized by a simple hydro-evaporation
method. The ceramics samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, scanning
electron microscopy (SEM), and polarization techniques, including leakage current measurements.
Although the introduction of Nb5+or Zr4+decreased the leakage current, they surprisingly deteriorated
the ferroelectric properties even at concentrations as low as 1 mol%. This effect was more pronounced for
the samples containing Nb. On the contrary, both La3+ and Eu3+ (incorporated at the Bi-site) improved
the ferroelectric properties as their concentrations increased. The La-doped samples exhibited higher
remnant electric polarizations at observed electric fields. The highest remnant electric polarization of31.9
μC/cm2at 150 kV/cm was measured for Bi0.85La0.15Fe0.998Zr0.002O3, indicating the synergetic
effect of La3+ and Zr4+, which is limited to very low Zr4+concentrations.

AB - We present the synthesis and photocatalytic properties of mixed-phase TiO2 nanoparticles decorated with silver nanodots obtained by environmental-friendly wet chemical method using low molecular weight chitosan as the silver reducing agent. Structural analysis of synthesized Ag nanoparticles revealed that they crystallized in a rare hexagonal modification. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy study shows that lt 3-nm hexagonal-Ag nanoparticles are implanted on the surface of lt 20-nm anatase grains. Compared to Ag-free TiO2 powders, implantation with Ag results in important increase in visible light absorption. The photocatalytic activity of the samples was measured by monitoring decolorization of concentrated textile dye solution (50 mg L-1 of Reactive Orange 16) under simulated solar irradiation of 280 W m(-2). The optimum photocatalytic properties are achieved with 5 wt% of silver. Based on the collected results, the operating mechanism of the degradation process is suggested, and the effects of the silver addition are explained.

AB - The BiVO4 sample was successfully synthesized from a mixture of ammonium vanadate, bismuth(III) nitrate, and nitric acid exposed to ultrasound irradiation. Structure, microstructure and optical properties of the obtained BiVO4 nanopowder were investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed single phase monoclinic lattice system with average crystallite size of 50 nm in diameter. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs revealed the tendency of crystallites to agglomerate forming larger irregular sub-micron spheres. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method was used to estimate the specific surface area of the sample and determine pore shape and size. UV–vis spectroscopy measurements have revealed favorably high absorbance of the visible light with the calculated band-gap value of 2.48 eV. Calculated values of valence and conducting band energies are +2.77 eV and +0.29 eV respectively, suggested that BiVO4 can be used for photocatalytic degradation under sunlight irradiation as evident from the UV–vis spectrum.

AB - The photocatalytic degradation of highly toxic azo dye Mordant Blue 9 (MB 9) was investigated using single-phase monoclinic BiVO4 nanopowder as a photocatalyst under the simulated solar irradiation. The photodegradation process as a function of different pH values of aqueous dye solution (pH = 1 – 13) and irradiation time was investigated, and the complete degradation mechanism was proposed. MB 9 was resistant to direct photolysis and the BiVO4 nanoparticles exhibited higher photocatalytic activity in a basic medium than in neutral and acid media. Photodegradation of the dye molecules occurred primarily due to a reaction with the photo-generated holes and OH– anions forming ∙OH radicals. The alkaline pH range favors the formation of more ∙OH radicals through the oxidation of hydroxide ions existing at the BiVO4 surface, thus the effectiveness of the photocatalytic process significantly increased. BiVO4 photocatalyst was stable and active under simulated solar irradiation over four consecutive cycles, which confirms its good photocatalytic properties.

AB - The subject of this research was the development of biodegradable and eco-friendly material based on natural biopolymers from renewable sources, with the addition of active components for application in active food packaging. The main principle was the incorporation of the active components (lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus L.) essential oil, ZnO nanoparticles, or Zn(CH3COO)2∙2H2O) with antimicrobial activity in the polymer matrix (chitosan, pectin, and gelatin), and their slow release during the time. All of the used components are listed as GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Different formulations of emulsions and dispersions were processed for mutual comparison. The stability of chitosan and pectin emulsions was determined by using laser diffraction methods. Chitosan emulsions exhibited higher stability during 30 days of storage. The chitosan emulsions and dispersions exhibited a higher antibacterial effect in vitro against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Staphylococcus aureus. Biopolymer coatings were formed by the spraying of emulsions on existing packaging. The effects of biopolymer coatings on the development of microorganisms on fresh raspberries (Rubus idaeus L.) were performed in vivo during eight days of raspberry storage at refrigerator temperature. The tested coatings extended the shelf life of stored raspberries from four to eight days. The synergistic effect between lemongrass essential oil and ZnO nanoparticles or Zn(CH3COO)2∙2H2O was observed both in vivo and in vitro.

AB - In this work by encapsulation technique we have synthetized three new clove bud essential oil (CEO) Emulsifiable Concentrate (EC) formulations depending on the carrier (synthetic zeolite-F-CSZ, nature zeolite-F-CNZ and gelatin-F-CG). The main idea was to develop an eco-friendly biopesticide that can find use in plant protection as an alternative to the use of conventional pesticides. By encapsulation we wanted to enable water solubility and ensure prolonged efficacy of the essential oil. Biological activity of designed CEO formulations was tested on potato tuber moth Phthorimaea operculella (fumigant mode of action), gray mold fungal pathogen Botrytis cinerea (preserver coatings), and soft rotting bacterial pathogens Pectobacterium carotovorum (subsp. carotovorum and brasiliensis) and Dickeya dianthicola (direct competition). CEO formulations evinced a prolonged action on mortality of P. operculella during the insects’ exposure to the concentration of the emulsions of 40 µL L−1 air. The mortality gradually decreased from a probability of 100% after the first 24 h to 50% after 5 days for F-CSZ or after 4 days for F-CNZ and F-CG. The most promising formulation is F-CSZ enabling activity during 14 days of exposure, while the effect of the other two formulations lasted 10 days. All three formulations produced a strong fungicidal effect against B. cinerea by preventing infection and disease development. The best efficacy was evidenced with F-CSZ (synthetic zeolite as a carrier) showing 100% efficacy when it was used even at the lowest tested concentration of active CEO (1%). The results of in vitro testing against soft rot pathogens determined the MIC value of CEO formulations to be 1% of active CEO. By this research, we present a novel perspective on the use of essential oils as an alternative, environmental biopesticide. CEO formulations can be commercially exploited as a fumigant or preserver coatings to extend the shelf life of stored products or the fresh-fruit market.

AB - Thin copper selenide films were synthesized on polyamide sheets using the successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method at three different temperatures. It was found that elevating the temperature of the solution led to the creation of copper selenide films with different features. X-ray diffraction characterization revealed that all films crystallized into a cubic Cu2−xSe, but with different crystallinity parameters. With elevating the temperature, grain size increased (6.61–14.33 and 15.81 for 40, 60 and 80 °C, respectively), while dislocation density and the strain decreased. Surface topology was investigated with Scanning Electron Microscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy, which revealed that the grains combined into agglomerates of up to 100 nm (80 °C) to 1 μm (40 °C). The value of the direct band gap of the copper selenide thin films, obtained with UV/VIS spectroscopy, varied in the range of 2.28–1.98 eV. The formation of Cu2−xSe was confirmed by Raman analysis; the most prominent Raman peak is located at 260 cm−1, which is attributed to binary copper selenides. The thin Cu2−xSe films deposited on polyamide showed p-type conductivity, and the electrical resistivity varied in the range of 20–50 Ω. Our results suggest that elevated temperatures prevent large agglomeration, leading to higher resistance behavior.

AB - This paper presents a systematic study on the photocatalytic activity of single-phase BiFeO3 (BFO) nanopowder, under the simulated solar irradiation in the presence of highly polluting textile dye (Mordant Blue 9). BFO nanopowder was synthesized by the means of the ultrasound-assisted sol-gel route. The structural and morphology analyses confirmed phase-pure crystalline BFO nanopowder with particle size of 70 nm. UV-vis spectroscopy measurements have revealed favorably high absorbance of the visible light with the calculated band-gap value of 2.21 eV. Photodegradation process as a function of different pH values of dye aqueous solution (pH = 1, 6.7 and 12) and irradiation time was investigated and the complete degradation mechanism was revealed. Related photodegradation products were detected by high-performance liquid chromatography equipped with mass spectrometer (HPLC/MS-MS). BFO nanoparticles exhibited higher photocatalytic activity in the basic medium than in neutral and acidic medium. HPLC/MS-MS analysis of the solutions at pH = 1 and pH = 6.7 showed only decolorization process, with no detectable degradation products, while at pH = 12 three different degradation products were observed, and their concentration slightly decreased with time. Reusability test showed that BFO nanoparticles can be used in four successive photodegradation cycles, with no significant activity losses.

AB - This investigation was aimed to develop films and coatings based on natural biopolymers and active components, with physicochemical and functional properties for application in antimicrobial packaging. Biopolymer films were obtained from emulsions and dispersions by casting method. Coatings were formed by the application of emulsions on existing packaging. Synthesis of emulsions and dispersions were performed by combining biopolymers (chitosan-gelatin, pectin-gelatin) with lemongrass essential oil (LEO), Zn(CH3COO)2.2H2O, or ZnO, as active components. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of the films showed that the addition of glycerol contributed to the forming of strong hydrogen bonds between glycerol and chitosan-gelatin or pectin-gelatin composites, facilitating the process of polymer branching, which is substantial for encapsulation. Thermal analyses revealed two characteristic processes occurring at 110 degrees C (water evaporation) and within 215-235 degrees C (degradation of polysaccharide and glycerol). Major weight losses were observed at 290 degrees C (chitosan-gelatin films) and 215 degrees C (pectin-gelatin films). The chitosan-gelatin films exhibited a lower degree of solubility (31-21%), and better mechanical properties comparing with the pectin-gelatin films. The chitosan-gelatin emulsions and dispersions exhibited a higher antibacterial effect in vitro against E. coli, B. subtilis, and S. aureus. In the case of the pectin-gelatin emulsions, the impact of LEO on the antibacterial activity was evident. The effects of biopolymer coatings on the development of microorganisms on fresh raspberries (Rubus idaeus L.) were performed in vivo during eight days of raspberry storage at refrigerator temperature. The tested coatings extended the shelf life of stored raspberries from four to eight days. The synergistic effect between LEO and ZnO or Zn-Ac was observed both in vivo and in vitro.

AB - TiO2 under UV light generates charge carriers (electrons and holes) that take part in the process of decomposition of pollutants, which is a well-known fact for the past few decades. For this reason, TiO2 is used for photocatalytic purification water and air. Photoactivity of TiO2 depends on the amount of generated charge carriers, and one part of those carriers are lost through the process of recombination. In order to improve photoactivity, it is necessary to speed up transport of electrons and holes. For better and faster charge carrier transport a unidirectional path is desired, which can be obtained by synthesizing 1D morphology. Anodization of titanium foil is a good way to obtain perpendicular nanotubular morphology onto a substrate. Nanotubular morphology can be optimized via operative conditions of anodization: applied voltage, anodization time and type of electrolyte. In this work, TiO2 nanotube arrays were synthesized by anodization of titanium foil at different voltages: 10 V, 15 V, 20 V and 25 V. Based on FESEM (Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy) micrographs, the microstructure of nanotubes was analysed and data concerning wall thickness, outer diameter of nanotubes and active surface were considered. Also, the influence of nanotube morphology on optical properties was determined. Results of our research show that the increasement in anodization voltage influenced on the appearance of redshift in the absorption spectrum. The sample synthesized at 20 V showed the highest photocatalytic activity due to the optimal nanotube length and nanotube diameter.

AB - Four silver-based coordination polymers, {[Ag(L1)(2)]NO3}(infinity) (1), {[Ag(L1)(2)]ClO4}(infinity) (2), {[Ag(L2)(2)]NO3 center dot H2O}(infinity) (3) and {[Ag(L2)(2)]ClO4}(infinity) (4), were synthesized using the thiomorpholine-4-carbonitrile (L1) and piperazine-1,4-dicarbonitrile (L2) ligands. Compounds 1 and 2 are two-dimensional, while 3 and 4 are three-dimensional. L1 and L2 are 1,4-bis-monodentate ligands in all compounds, while Ag(i) ions are four-coordinated in a slightly distorted tetrahedral geometry. Topological analysis in standard representations suggests that underlying nets in 1 and 2 have an sql topology, while 3 and 4 exhibit a dia topology. Thermal analysis shows that 3 loses crystalline water at room temperature, while other compounds show good thermal stability. All compounds show good photocatalytic activity for photocatalytic degradation of the mordant blue 9 dye, with reaction rates in the range 0.029 to 0.061 min(-1). The best result was obtained for compound 4, which can be correlated to its largest lattice volume.

AB - In this paper two methods of preparation of yttrium orthovanadate nanopowders were presented: Solid State Reaction (top - down approach) and Solution Combustion Synthesis (bottom - up approach). For starting structural characterization, X - Ray Powder Diffraction (XPRD) and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) were used. We report the change in reflection spectra in europium doped YVO4 nanopowders with comparison to its bulk analog. In UV-Vis reflection spectra we consider the change in values of band gap in these structures, after resizing it from bulk to nanomaterial. In Far - Infrared (FIR) reflection spectra, we registered the existence of Surface Optical Phonon (SOP) and different multi - phonon processes which alter the reflection spectra of bulk YVO4 . The influence of Eu ions is reflected through multi - phonon processes that occur and are connected with energy transfer from YVO4 lattice to Eu ions. All IR spectra were modeled using classical oscillator model with Drude part added which takes into account the free carrier contribution. Since our samples are distinctively inhomogeneous materials, we use Effective Medium theory in Maxwell Garnett approximation to model its effective dieletric function.

AB - The study reported the development of biodegradable, environment- and eco-friendly material based on natural polymers and lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus L.) essential oil (LEO) for application as a green pesticide. The insecticidal effect of an emulsion composed of encapsulated LEO into a biopolymer matrix against the potato tuber moth (Phthorimaea operculella, Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) (PTM) was examined and its prolonged effect compared with pure LEO. The lethal effect of the encapsulated LEO against the PTM was prolonged for up to seven days as compared to 48 h for the pure LEO. The slow release rate of the active compound (citral) from the encapsulated and the pure LEO was determined by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. After seven days the citral concentration in the encapsulated LEO was higher (60%) than in the pure LEO after 48 h (52.7%). The results of the slow release of the active compound correlated well with the insecticidal effect of the encapsulated and the pure LEO against the PTM.

AB - BiFeO3 (BFO) precursor powder was synthesized by ultrasound asissted sol–gel route at relatively low temperature, starting from Bi-nitrate, Fe-nitrate, and ethylene glycol. Structural, optical, and photocatalytic properties of the obtained powder were investigated. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that thermal treatment of precursor powder at 500 °C led to formation of pure phase BiFeO3. BFO is p-type semiconductor where determined band gap was 2.20 eV, indicating its potential application as visible-light-response photocatalyst. Mott-Schottky measurements were performed to determine flat band potential and position of valence and conduction bands. Obtained BFO powder is used for photocatalytic degradation of typical organic azo dye Mordant Blue 9 in concentration of 50 mg/l. Measurements were performed for different times of irradiation and pH of the dye solution. Photodegradation products were analyzied by HPLC technique, and mechanism of photocatalytic degradation of organic dye was proposed.

AB - BiFeO3, as one of few multiferroic perovskites, is distinguished by some drawbacks such as high leakage current,
low remnant magnetic polarization, high electric coercive field, and difficulties of pure phase synthesis that still
keep it away from any practical use in electronics. There have been many attempts to improve the overall properties
of BiFeO3 by A- or B-site doping or by both. It was found that B-site doping with Nb can potentially improve both
the ferroelectric and magnetic properties of BiFeO3. In this study, BiFe1–xNbxO3 (x=0.002; 0.005 and 0.01) bulk ceramics
were investigated in the quest for a more integral understanding of changes in multiferroic properties caused by
light Nb doping (≤ 1 mole%). BiFe1–xNbxO3 powders were synthesized by hydro evaporation method and only traces
of the secondary phases were observed. Multiferroic properties of bulk ceramics were investigated using X-ray
diffraction (XRD) analysis, scanning electron spectroscopy (SEM), polarization (PMTS), and magnetization (SQUID)
techniques. It was shown that even small percentages of Nb could notably change the electric and magnetic
behavior of BiFeO3. The electric conductivity differed by two orders of magnitude between samples doped with
0.2 and 1% Nb. The ferroelectric behavior strongly depended on the conduction mechanism, and the transition from
space-charge-limited current (SCLC) conduction to trap-filled Limited (TFL) conduction regime reflected on a
change in hysteresis patterns, particularly for the samples with 0.2 and 0.5% Nb. ZFC-FC magnetization curves were
separated for all Nb concentrations and the degree of separation increased with Nb doping. Weak ferromagnetic
behavior was observed from the hysteresis measurements and the increase of remnant magnetization with Nb
concentration. The coercive magnetic field changed drastically compared to the pure BiFeO3, namely, the sample with
1% Nb exhibited a very high coercive magnetic field of ~10 kOe.

AB - Bismuth ferrite, BiFeO3, was doped with a wide range of concentrations (0-30%) of Gd in order to investigate structural, ferroelectric, and magnetic properties and their correlation. Powder samples of Bi1-xGdxFeO3 (x = 0.00-0.30) were prepared using the hydro-evaporation synthesis method. Sintering process at 870 degrees C for 6 h of as-prepared, Gd doped BiFeO3 powders resulted in ceramic samples with relative densities in the range of (74-86) %. XRD analysis revealed that Bi1-xGdxFeO3 samples (x = 0.00-0.09) crystallized in rhombohedral phase; Bi1-xGdxFeO3 samples (x = 0.10-0.20) contained both rhombohedral and orthorhombic phases, while Bi1-xGdxFeO3 (x = 0.30) sample contained only the orthorhombic phase. The structural parameters obtained after Rietveld refinement for single-phase Bi1-xGdxFeO3 ceramic samples and microstructure image analysis were correlated with the results of ferroelectric and magnetic measurements. Bi1-xGdxFeO3 (x = 0.0625, 0.075, 0.09) samples showed improved ferroelectric properties and reduced leakage current density in comparison with undoped BiFeO3. Gradual increase in Gd content in BiFeO3 led to enhanced magnetic responses and weak ferromagnetic behavior.
