AB - Mung bean (Vigna radiata L.) is a leguminous plant cultivated mainly in south-east Asia and used as an ingredient in local cuisine. Its principal nutritional value is contained in its constituents such as starch, proteins, (poly)phenols, and natural antioxidants. Fluorescence spectroscopy is increasingly used as a method of choice for food analysis; due to the presence of different fluorophores originating from aromatic amino acids and secondary metabolites, it is useful for proteins and phenolics detection. In this study, the total protein and phenolic contents of mung bean seed extracts were determined using the Bradford method and Folin–Ciocalteu (FC) reagent, respectively. Antioxidant activity was determined using DPPH (2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) assay. Fluorescence spectra were recorded for a series of excitation-emission wavelengths. Further, we used the multivariate analysis on the recorded excitation-emission fluorescence matrix of the studied samples. The results showed the presence of three different fluorescence components, with the position of the emission maximum corresponding to the fluorophore of proteins (component 1 with excitation/emission peak maxima at Ex 290/Em 345 nm) and phenolics (component 2 - Ex 295/Em 395 nm and component 3 - Ex 350/Em 450 nm). This fluorescence-based method could be a useful approach for estimating the nutrient properties of leguminous food.

AB - Phenols are highly toxic organic compounds found in wastewater due to various industries’ pollution. Its removal is of great importance for human and animal health. Enzymatic wastewater treatment has several advantages over traditional methods. Enzyme immobilization onto solid carriers enables its reusability and lowers the cost of treatment. In this work, immobilized horseradish peroxidase on chemically modified alginate hydrogel was tested for phenol removal. The reusability of the tested immobilizate was monitored in repeated cycles. After five consecutive cycles, the remaining activity of the immobilized enzyme was 54%. The obtained result shows the potential for using this immobilizate for wastewater treatment.

AB - Uzorci vode iz reke Pek uzeti su u proleće 2022. godine. Analiza potencijalno toksičnih
elelemata (Hg, As, Zn, Cd, Pb, Ni, Fe, B, Cr, Mn i Cu) izvršena je pomoću optičke
emisione spektroskopije sa induktivno spregnutom plazmom (ICP-OES), a aromatičnih
ugljovodonika, policikličnih aromatičnih ugljovodonika i fenola gasnim hromatografom sa
masenom spektometrijom (GC-MS).
AB - Water samples from the Pek river were collected in the spring 2022. Analysis of potentially
toxic elements (Hg, As, Zn, Cd, Pb, Ni, Fe, B, Cr, Mn, and Cu) was performed using
inductively-coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), and aromatic
hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and phenol by gas chromatography-mass
spectrometry (GC-MS). Mn concentrations exceeded the MAC values prescribed for water.
Of organic compounds, only fluoranthene, naphthalene, and phenanthrene were detected.
Fluorescence spectroscopy was used for water screening on presence of aromatic
compounds. The results indicated that this method could be used as a fast screening tool for
water quality analysis.

AB - Food is a complex matrix of proteins, fats, minerals, vitamins, and other components. Various analytical methods are currently used for food testing. However, most of the used methods require sample preprocessing and expensive chemicals. New analytical methods are needed for quick and economic measurement of food quality and safety. Fluorescence spectroscopy is a simple and quick method to measure food quality, without sample preprocessing. This technique has been developed for food samples due to the application of a front-face measuring setup. Fluorescent compounds–fluorophores in the food samples are highly sensitive to their environment. Information about molecular structure and changes in food samples is obtained by the measurement of excitation–emission matrices of the endogenous fluorophores and by applying multivariate chemometric tools. Synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy is an advantageous screening mode used in food analysis. The fluorescent markers in food are amino acids tryptophan and tyrosine; the structural proteins collagen and elastin; the enzymes and co-enzymes NADH and FAD; vitamins; lipids; porphyrins; and mycotoxins in certain food types. The review provides information on the principles of the fluorescence measurements of food samples and the advantages of this method over the others. An analysis of the fluorescence spectroscopy applications in screening the various food types is provided.

AB - Bacterial infections and resistance to antibiotics are increasingly severe problems. In recent years, Staphylococcus species
have emerged as important pathogens in animals and humans. Current therapeutic methods against these species have serious
disadvantages; therefore new agents with antibacterial potential, such as plant-based substances, are very important in
therapy. We report a pilot study with new method of fractioning the dehydrogenate polymer DHP obtained from coniferyl
alcohol and application of the low-MW fractions of 200–3000 Da for antibacterial activity in healing animal lesions. In
vivo experiments were conducted on the dogs having a skin lesion. Dogs were treated with the suspension containing the
low-MW DHP fractions as the active ingredient, in combination with alginate for 7 days. Cytological smears and microbiological
analyses of the affected area were performed. Staphylococcus spp. was isolated from lesions in all dogs from
our research. The results show that the low-MW DHP suspension in alginate promotes skin healing and reduction of the
infection of the lesions in the affected animals. Pharmaceutical composition containing the low-MW DHP fractions exerts
a soothing effect on the subject in wound treatment. Reduction in the number of bacteria by 30% and more were noticed
in 6 dogs, while in 4 dogs this percentage is above 50%. No side effects were noticed. Synthesized lignin oligomers may
have a significant place as antimicrobial and skin healing agents, especially since an increasing number of multidrugresistant
staphylococci are found on the skin lesions in animals.

AB - In recent years, versatile peroxidase (VP) has emerged as a promising enzyme for biotechnological applications, as it can oxidize lignin without the external mediators. To gain insights into the breakdown process of artificial lignin by VP, reaction between the two was studied. Degradation products were fractionated using ultrafiltration and analyzed by RP- high performance liquid chromatography with mass detection (HPLC-MS) chromatography. Four fractions were obtained based on their molecular sizes: >10, 3–10, 1–3, and <1 kDa. Interestingly, while VP did not significantly alter the yields of these fractions, the chromatograms revealed the presence of oligomers with different molecular weights (MWs) resulting from the enzymatic activity. The VP exhibits a dual role in its enzymatic activity: both degrading and synthesizing these oligomers. This was confirmed by principal component analysis (PCA). The positive correlations were found between certain oligomers (D1 and D2, D5 and D6, as well as between D7, D10, T2, and T4), suggesting their simultaneous degradation. On the other hand, a negative correlation was found between the monomer and some oligomers (D7, D10, T2, and T4), indicating the decomposition of these oligomers into monomers. These findings shed light on the intricate interplay between VP and artificial lignin, offering valuable insights for potential applications in lignin valorization.

AB - In situ fluorescence measurements have been used to investigate relative amounts of blue-green pigments and
their distributions in plant leaves from Euphorbia pulcherrima. Advantage was taken from the fact that this species
has white leaves on the top, with low pigment concentrations, and green leaves on the stem with ordinary
pigment concentrations. Excitation- and emission spectra below 410 nm from white leaves, where pigment
absorption is low, are not distorted by self-absorption. Absorption- and reflection spectra from white and green
leaves were measured using a spectrophotometer equipped with an integrating sphere. The absorption spectra
were used to correct recorded fluorescence spectra for self-absorption. Self-absorption corrected photosystem
fluorescence from green leaves, modeling light transmission in leaf tissue exponentially, matches to the excitation/
emission spectra from white leaves, apart from small differences due to the pigment concentrations and
selective scattering. The introduced exponentially decaying transmission relation also predicts that the ratio of
excitation spectra from a white and green leaf is in proportion to the absorption spectrum of the green leaf, which
was validated for Photosystem II particle fluorescence. This relation was also used to find a scaled absorption
spectrum responsible for blue-green emission, which was assumed to originate from lignin. Excitation/emission
spectra of the blue-green fluorescence were decomposed into five components and their relative amounts from
adaxial and abaxial sides of the leaves have been quantified. Fluorescence lifetime measurements of the leaves,

AB - Cerium oxide nanoparticles (nCeO2) are interesting nanomaterials due to their redox properties. Their wide application could result in unexpected consequences to environmental safety. Unlike acute toxicity, the trans-generational effects of carbohydrate-coated nCeO2 in the environment are still unknown. The main aim of this study was to investigate the effect of treating maternal plants of Chenopodium rubrum L. (red goosefoot) and Sinapis alba L. (white mustard) with uncoated (CeO2) and glucose-, levan-, or pullulan-coated nCeO2 (G-, L-, or P-CeO2) during seed germination on morphological and physiological characteristics of produced seeds in two subsequent generations. The plant response was studied by measuring germination percentage (Ger), total protein content (TPC), total phenolic content (TPhC), total antioxidative activity (TAA), and catalase (CAT) activity. Results showed that maternal effects of the different nCeO2 treatments persist to at least the second generation in seeds. Generally, C. rubrum was more sensitive to nCeO2 treatments than S. alba. The coated nCeO2 were more effective than uncoated ones in both plant species; L- and P-CeO2 were the most effective in S. alba, while CeO2 and G-CeO2 had a dominant impact in C. rubrum. Enhanced germination in all tested generations of S. alba seeds recommends nCeO2 for seed priming.

AB - In nature, woody substrates are usually degraded by entire communities of microorganisms, which are nowadays jeopardised by anthropogenic influence, making it important to define the functional specificity of every species. Two strains of autochthonous fungi from Serbian lowland forests (Pleurotus ostreatus Ser1 and Cyclocybe aegerita Ser1) have been investigated for their ability to degrade lignin substrates [oak sawdust, oak isolated cell walls, and synthetic dehydrogenative polymer (DHP)]. Measuring the activities of the enzymes involved in lignin degradation was coupled with detecting the HPLC profile of the phenolics in the fungal growth media, and the lignin loss. While Pleurotus ostreatus Ser1 appeared highly effective within a very short time span, Cyclocybe aegerita Ser1 failed to degrade lignin. This situation was supported by very high enzyme activities and the low presence of phenolics in the media of Pleurotus ostreatus Ser1, compared to very low enzyme activity and the high presence of phenolics in the media with Cyclocybe aegerita Ser1.

AB - Environmental safety may be compromised by the presence of hazardous chemical compounds, such as bisphenol A (BPA), which is commonly used in the production of certain types of plastics. BPA is an emerging organic contaminant that could be found in many matrices, such as drinking water, due to anthropogenic activities. Within this study, we used fluorescence spectroscopy to analyse the photoluminescent characteristics of BPA in various solutions and drinking water. The emission spectra of BPA in various solvents are recorded from 280 nm to 380 nm, after excitation wavelength at 230 nm. These results imply that the fluorescence approach can be used for rapid detection and estimation of the level of BPA in water samples and, hence, for non-invasive monitoring of BPA in drinking water is an important concern for public health and environmental protection.

AB - Honey bees have a very important role in pollinating plants, in addition to honey production. Bee
diseases are one of the reasons of a significant decrease in bee colonies in the world in recent years. Honey samples originating from hives with different infestations with N. ceranae were analyzed. Total phenolic content and total protein content were determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu assay and the Bradford assay, respectively. Fluorescence spectroscopy combined with PARAFAC was used to determine the spectral components originating from proteins (PFSC1) and phenolics (PFSC2) in honey samples, and their ratios were calculated. Phenols and proteins content in the honey samples, obtained by spectrophotometric quantification, decreases with increasing infestation levels in the respective hives infected with N. ceranae. A negative correlation was obtained for the ratio of PARAFAC components PFSC2/PFSC1 and the level of infestation with N. ceranae in honey samples. These results indicate that fluorescence spectroscopy combined with PARAFAC could be used as an optical tool for non-invasive and rapid screening of honey to estimate bee health status.

AB - Environmental occurrence of the pathogenic fungus Aspergillus flavus (A. flavus) has hazardous
effects on the health status of plants, humans, and animals. It is important to explore novel antifungal agents to control the growth of this fungus. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the antifungal contact activity of two different types of carbon dots (CDS) nanomaterials; the one was coated with vitamin B12
(CDS@VB12) and the other was obtained from folic acid (FA@CDs). We used fluorescence
spectroscopy to obtain their fluorescence fingerprinting profile. The CDs were pipetted on the PDA
medium with sterilised filter paper placed in the center of the Petri dish. Then, pure A. flavus cultures were subcultured on PDA and incubated at 25°C for 7 days, and the diameters of mycelium growth were daily evaluated. The percentage of inhibition by CDS@VB12 ranged from 38.09% to 60.9% and from 46.03% to 71.39% for the amounts of 30 μl and 50 μl, respectively. On the other hand, FA@CDs did not show any inhibitory effect on the first day, and after that more progressive growth of A. flavus was noticed. The obtained results showed that CDS@VB12 could be considered as a potential new antifungal material against toxic and pathogenic A. flavus.

AB - Varroa destructor is a parasitic mite responsible for the loss of honey bee (Apis mellifera)
colonies. This study aimed to find a promising marker in honey for the bee colony infestation level
using fluorescence spectroscopy and biochemical analyses. We examined whether the parameters of
the honey samples’ fluorescence spectra and biochemical parameters, both related to proteins and
phenolics, may be connected with the level of honey bee colonies’ infestation. The infestation level
was highly positively correlated with the catalase activity in honey (r = 0.936). Additionally, the
infestation level was positively correlated with the phenolic spectral component (r = 0.656), which
was tentatively related to the phenolics in honey. No correlation was found between the diastase
activity in honey and the colonies’ infestation level. The results indicate that the catalase activity in
honey and the PFC1 spectral component may be reliable markers for the V. destructor infestation level
of the colonies. The obtained data may be related to the honey yield obtained from the apiaries.

AB - In this study, luminescence and antibacterial behavior of pure fluorapatite (FAp) and praseodymium-
nitrate-carbonate co-doped fluorapatite (PrNCFAp) nanopowders were investigated.
Uniform nanopowders were synthesized by precipitation reaction followed by
centrifugation and systematically characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM–EDS, TG and PL
methods. XRD analysis revealed the formation of hexagonal FAp crystals, and FTIR spectra
indicate the presence of nitrate (
NO3
−) and carbonate (
CO3
2−) species. SEM analyzes
confirm agglomerates composed of irregular nanometer-sized spheres. Emission of FAp
nanopowder occurred in the violet-blue region of the visible part of the spectrum, with
redshift to the blue-green color region when Pr3+,
NO3
− and CO3
2− co-doped in the lattice.
Analysis of luminescence spectra by MCR-ALS method extract three fluorophores from
the PrNCFAp sample and showed simultaneous existents of emission-reabsorption-emission
between dopants in FAp lattice. Antibacterial activity against pathogen Staphylococcus
aureus was investigated before and after treatment of nanopowders by UVA radiation
of 365 nm. Nanopowders irradiated with UVA compared to non-irradiated reduced Staphylococcus
aureus by 84.9% for PrNCFAp and 33.3% for FAp in the first 0.5 h of contact, and
76.1% and 42.9% after 24 h of contact. In addition, the obtained luminescent nanomaterials
showed a low degree of hemolytic activity and could potentially be candidates for further
research in dentistry.

AB - Nanomaterials based on metal–doped fluorapatite (FAP) have attracted considerable interest as potential
next–generation antimicrobial agents. In this study, Cu2+–doped FAP nanocrystals have been successfully synthesized
by a neutralization method at room temperature. Their structural, optical, antimicrobial, and hemcompatible
properties have been investigated. XRD, FTIR, FESEM, and N2 adsorption–desorption studies indicate
the formation of single–phase FAP mesoporous nanopowders, composed of rod–like particles. TEM images
confirmed the formation of nanorodes with a length of 60 nm and a width of about 18 nm. Rietveld analysis
shows that the Cu2+ ions preferentially substitute Ca2 (6 h) sites in the hexagonal fluorapatite crystal structure.
Fluorescence spectroscopy accompanied by MCR–ALS method confirms substitution of Cu2+ ions in FAP crystal
lattice with extracting additional d–d band transition at green color from FAP broadband self–activated luminescence
in violet–blue color. Antimicrobial studies conducted on Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and
Micrococcus lysodeikticus showed that FAP nanopowder with the highest Cu2+ content have strong bacteriostatic
action on Staphylococcus aureus bacterial strain in mediums containing nutrition matters. In addition, this sample
in comparison to pure FAP achieved a high percentage of relative reduction of bacterial population for all three
species, being >90% in most cases. Fungistatic action is noticed too, throwgh the slowing down mycelium
growth of fungus Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus and Penicillium roqueforti and reduction of sporulation of
Aspergillus niger species. Cu2+–doped FAP nanocrystals shows a synergistic antimicrobial effect with Cu2+ and F
ions. Concerning the potential biomedical applications, the hemolysis ratios of the Cu2+–doped FAP samples
were below 5%. The obtained results pointed out the possible use of the synthesized nanocrystals as broad–
spectrum antimicrobial agents for various biomedical and health care preparations.

AB - The material selected for biomedical application must be biocompatible, stable against physiological media, non-toxic, non-carcinogenic, corrosion-resistant, bio-inert, and stimuli-responsive, and have a low wear rate. Lignin is the most abundant aromatic polymer on Earth with a complex, recalcitrant structure. A lot of knowledge is acquired on its pre-treatments and processing for biomedical uses in the forms of hydrogels, films, composite materials, nanoparticles, and aerogels. To avoid the potential toxicity and to control the cytotoxicity of lignin-based materials, it is necessary to increase the purity of the starting source materials and understand their reactivity. The poor water solubility, broad molecular weight (MW) distribution, and highly complex structure of lignin restrict its wider clinical applications. These limitations may be effectively improved by chemical modifications or by using lignin fractions with a narrow MW range. Antioxidant and antimicrobial properties allow lignin to be used in pharmaceuticals, drug delivery, and wound healing. It is also reported as a good candidate for composite materials intended for bone regeneration scaffolds in tissue engineering. Future challenges for lignin-based materials for biomedical applications include achieving a better understanding of the structure, isolation, and batch properties of lignin, as well as structure–function relationships in its applications.

AB - In this study, we investigated, in an in vitro system, the interaction of SiO2 (as a complex with NH4OH) with the peroxidase-catalyzed polymerization of lignin monomer into lignin model compound DHP, imitating conditions of the last step of lignin formation in the cell walls. The structure of obtained polymer was monitored using fluorescent spectroscopy and AFM 30 minutes after the start of synthesis. We studied effect of two different Si concentrations, 0.6 mM and 6 mM. Analysis of the DHP fluorescent spectra, and the application of mathematical decomposition clearly shows that structure of lignin model compound depends on Si concentration in the reaction mixture. The amount of Si affects the distribution of electrons in the DHP polymer. When silicon is present at a concentration of 6 mM, the position of the longest-wavelength APD band shifts towards shorter wavelengths compared to the position of the APD band for 0.6 mM Si. This indicates that during polymer synthesis, higher concentration of silicon may inhibit the formation of pi-electronic structures, which are responsible for electron delocalization. AFM images also show differences in the size and regularity of DHP globules.

abstract = "In this study, we investigated, in an in vitro system, the interaction of SiO2 (as a complex with NH4OH) with the peroxidase-catalyzed polymerization of lignin monomer into lignin model compound DHP, imitating conditions of the last step of lignin formation in the cell walls. AB - Nanometric scale size oscillations seem to be a fundamental feature of all living organisms on Earth. Their detection usually requires complex and very sensitive devices. However, some recent studies demonstrated that very simple optical microscopes and dedicated image processing software can also fulfill this task. This novel technique, termed as optical nanomotion detection (ONMD), was recently successfully used on yeast cells to conduct rapid antifungal sensitivity tests. In this study, we demonstrate that the ONMD method can monitor motile sub-cellular organelles, such as mitochondria. Here, mitochondrial isolates (from HEK 293 T and Jurkat cells) undergo predictable motility when viewed by ONMD and triggered by mitochondrial toxins, citric acid intermediates, and dietary and bacterial fermentation products (short-chain fatty acids) at various doses and durations. The technique has superior advantages compared to classical methods since it is rapid, possesses a single organelle sensitivity, and is label- and attachment-free.

AB - Alginate is a natural polymer present in the cell wall of brown algae. Due to its many advantages, it
has been used extensively in the food industry, pharmacy, and biomedicine. To enhance properties,
such as stability and biodegradability, alginate is often chemically crosslinked. In this study, alginate
was crosslinked using N-hydroxysuccinimide, 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide
hydrochloride and tyramine hydrochloride. Horseradish peroxidase was self-immobilized within
hydrogel microbeads during the polymerization reaction. The glucose oxidase/glucose system
generates H2O2 internally, which can prevent the detrimental effect of excess peroxide. A small
amount of leaking enzyme shows potential for longer storage and reuse.

AB - The application of enzymes for phenol removal from polluted waters is an effective and
environmentally favorable method and an ongoing worldwide research topic. Oxidoreductive
enzymes, like Soybean peroxidase (SBP), catalyze oxidation and polymerization of phenolic
compounds in the presence of H2O2. The industrial application, however, requires enzyme
immobilization on various carriers to overcome the disadvantages of using the soluble form.
Chemically modified pectin has been chosen as a carrier for entrapment of SBP inside a threedimensional
polymeric network. Immobilization of SBP was performed in an emulsion polymerization
reaction producing enzymes entrapped in covalently crosslinked tyramine-pectin in the shape of
micro-beads. The specific activity of immobilized SBP was determined using pyrogallol as a substrate.
In this study, the stability of the immobilized SBP onto modified pectin in three different molar ratios
was tested to determine the carrier with the best performance. Immobilized peroxidase has potential
for application as a biocatalyst for phenol removal from wastewater.

AB - Varroa infestation is considered a major threat to honeybees due to its strong impact on the colony, attacking larval cells, increasing bee mortality, and serving as a vector of pathogens. Coumaphos is an organophosphate-based acaricide insecticide which is frequently used to control Varroa (Varroa destructor) mites in the honey bee (Apis melifera) colonies. The accumulation of these lipophilic contaminants in honey and beeswax may affect honey bee health, mainly honey bee larvae which are the most sensitive, and negatively affect queen quality. In this study, we analyzed honey samples from hives of honey bees that were treated with Coumaphos, as well as the samples of pure Coumafos. The front-face fluorescence measurements of analyed honey samples were recorded using an Fl3-221 P spectrofluorimeter, with a 450 W Xenon lamp. Obtained results showed an emission peak with maximum around 400 nm, after excitation at 340 nm. It could be related to the presence of Coumaphos in honey samples, which showed the characteristic position of emission maximum at the same wavelength. These results showed that fluorescence spectroscopy may be useful as a fast and sensitive method, for the efficient and specific determination of toxic substances such as Coumaphos residues in honey. Due to the proven toxic effects on honey bees, as well as on humans, monitoring hazardous contaminants in honey is of crucial importance in the field of food and agriculture.

AB - Silica is beneficial element for plants. Many studies of silica show the useful effects that Si can provide on plant-environment relationships in a wide variety of crops, as increase in growth and yield and improvement of resistance to metal toxicity, salt stress, drought resistance etc. The occurrence of Si within a plant is a result of its uptake in the form of soluble Si(OH)4 or Si(OH)3O ion from the soil, and its polymerization at a final location. Si is mostly accumulated in the cell walls (CWs), thus providing strengthening of CWs, increasing mechanical strength, and alleviating effects of various biotic and abiotic types of stress. Lignin, as one of the main components of the plant CW, is a natural phenolic polymer with high molecular weight and complex structure. Accumulation of silica in plants is directly connected with chemistry and structure of lignin. Silicon affects the composition of CWs by its binding to the phenolic and carbohydrate CW components in polymerization reactions by altering linkages of non-cellulosic polymers and lignin. We studied, in an in vitro system, the interaction of SiO2 with the peroxidase catalyzed polymerization of a lignin monomer into the lignin model compound (DHP). Fluorescence microscopy and spectroscopy combined with AFM technique showed that Si was bound to the final polymer, and the structure of the Si-DHP differed from pure DHP. We show that Si significantly influence on lignin structure. The results contribute to understanding of Si binding to lignin in cell walls, which may have impact on possible Si applications in agriculture.
