AB - The soybean is recognized worldwide as one of the most important crops due to its protein- and
oil-rich seeds. Several beneficial bacterial strains, including those of the genus Pseudomonas, are
known to increase plant yield and disease tolerance. The aim of this study was to test the potential of 15 strains of Pseudomonas spp. to promote soybean growth under field conditions. Strains were identified based on 16S rRNA and gyrB sequences, and strains belonging to risk group 1 were further analyzed. Selected strains were tested for plant growth-promoting (PGP) properties, biofilm formation and in vitro antimicrobial activity against various fungal pathogens. PGP activity indicators of the selected strains were evaluated on soybean plants grown in fertilizer-free soil and in soil treated with 70% and 100% fertilizers. Three Pseudomonas spp. strains, P. putida VB131A, P. fulva VB134B and P. rhodesiae VB143S, were selected as PGP candidates. All three strains showed the ability to produce IAA and solubilize phosphorus, while only P. rhodesiae VB143S showed strong lipase and protease activity. Only P. fulva VB134B showed the ability to
produce biofilm and hydrogen cyanide. All three strains showed in vitro antifungal activity against
Alternaria infectoria. P. fulva VB134B and P. rhodesiae VB143S showed antifungal activity against
Alternaria alternata and P. putida VB131A and P. rhodesiae VB143S against Epicoccum nigrum. Only P. fulva VB134B showed activity against Monilinia laxa. Statistically significant differences in
plant height were not observed regardless of the strain or soil treatment used. In terms of first
pod height, the P. fulva VB134B treatment was most effective when applied to soybeans grown
in 100% fertilized soil. In contrast, plants treated with P. rhodesiae VB143S and grown in 100% fertilized soil had the highest number of branches and pods per plant.

AB - Healthy dietary habits with abundant fruit consumption may reduce prevalence and positively affect development and progression of various chronic diseases including obesity and insulin-resistance related diseases. Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) represent a valuable source of vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, dietary fiber, and various bioactive polyphenolic compounds such as anthocyanins and flavonoids which are known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. In this study we evaluated the effect of newly introduced strawberry cultivar „Aprika” supplemented in the form of lyophilized powder, on obesity-related metabolic alterations in high-fat-diet fed mice. We hypothesized that chronic (8 weeks) supplementation of lyophilized strawberries in the amount comparable to two servings per day in humans, would ameliorate insulin resistance associated with obesity in C57BL/6 mice. Furthermore, we hypothesized that strawberry meal consumed at 7PM i.e. before active feeding period of mice (which corresponds to early breakfast in humans) would induce more pronounced beneficial effects compared to meal consumed at 7AM i.e. at the end of the active feeding period (which corresponds to late dinner in humans). High fat diet induced hyperglycaemia, hyperinsulinaemia, insulin resistance and obesity; and disturbed hepatic insulin signaling. Lyophilized strawberries, only when consumed before feeding period, reduced body weight gain and improved insulin sensitivity induced by high-fat diet (evidenced by lower area under the curve after an intraperitoneal GTT, reduced serum insulin levels and an insulin resistance index (IR-HOMA). Strawberry meals consumed after active feeding period had no such effect. However, strawberries, regardless of the time of consumption, restored protein level of Insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS1) in the liver and increased hepatic antioxidant enzymes level. In conclusion, strawberries improve insulin sensitivity and raise hepatic antioxidant capacity in mouse model of diet induced obesity. Nevertheless, more beneficial effects were achieved when strawberries were consumed before active feeding period, as an early breakfast

AB - In August 2020, the unusual appearance of crown gall symptoms was observed on the
tobacco plants (hybrid PVH2310) grown in fields in the Golubinci (Srem district, Serbia) locality. The causal agent isolated from galls located on tobacco roots formed circular, convex, and glistening light blue colonies, and then dark to olive-green-colored bacterial colonies on a semi-selective D1 medium. Molecular analysis based on multiplex PCR and multi-locus sequence analysis (MLSA) using concatenated sequences of the atpD, dnaK, glnA, and rpoB genes as well as 16S rRNA identified Serbian tobacco isolates such as Agrobacterium tumefaciens (biovar 1). Two duplex PCR methods confirmed the presence of the virD2 and virC genes in tobacco isolates. Pathogenicity tests performed on carrot discs and squash fruits resulted in tumor/gall formation after 12 to 16 days post inoculation, respectively. Pathogenicity was also confirmed on tobacco plants, where isolates caused tumor development 21−25 days after inoculation. API 50 CH generated results regarding the biochemical features of the Serbian tobacco isolates. As A. tumefaciens (biovar 1) as a cause of tobacco crown gall has previously been documented solely in Japan, there is presently no data on its wider occurrence. Therefore, this first detailed investigation of A. tumefaciens isolated from naturally infected tobacco in Serbia will contribute to a better understanding of it at the global level.

AB - In this paper, we have systematically studied the structural, morphological, and optical properties of Ni-doped TiO2, synthesized via a simple, cost-effective electrospinning method followed by calcination at 500 C. The nanofibers with a core-shell structure were relatively homogeneous, smooth and randomly oriented, and there were no significant differences in fiber diameters due to Ni2+ content. Core loss mapping using electron energy loss spectroscopy confirmed an even distribution of titanium and relatively uniform nickel in the fibers. It was found that doping with 0.5 mol.% Ni2+ decreased the rutile content, while doping with 1 mol.% Ni2+ resulted in a pure anatase phase with a significantly increased specific surface area (36.6 m2/g). Further increase in Ni2+ content (3-10 mol.%) not only prolonged the response of TiO2 nanofibers to visible light, but also increased the specific surface area (49.5 m2/g), decreased crystallite size (7 nm), and increased rutile content in TiO2 (33 wt.%). Photoluminescence analysis revealed that doping TiO2 with different amounts of Ni2+ leads to a gradual decrease of emission spectra intensity and red shift in the maxima positions. The XPS results confirmed that as the Ni2+ content enlarged, the Ti2+ and Ti3+ content increased significantly, effectively promoting the formation of oxygen vacancies. Raman analysis showed that an increase in nickel content (3-5 mol.%) led to a decrease and shift in peak intensity due to Ti3+ formation and also the possible presence of NiTiO3 phases. HRTEM analysis showed that Ni was doped into the substitution sites of both the anatase and rutile TiO2 lattice but had a stronger influence on the distortion of the anatase phase. The photocatalytic activity of Ni-doped TiO2 nanofibers was explored by analyzing the degradation of an antibiotic, oxytetracycline, monitored in laboratory conditions under visible light irradiation. After 60 minutes of irradiation, the degradation of OTC with 1Ni-TiO2 reached 76.4% and with 10Ni-TiO2 70.5%.

AB - In this work we have characterized and compared chitin sourced from exoskeleton of Tenebrio molitor larvae fed with polystyrene or plastic kitchen wrap combined with bran in the ratio 1:1 with chitin sourced from larvae exoskeleton fed only with bran. Analysis of the frass by ATR-FTIR showed very similar spectra and confirmed degradation of the plastic feed components, while ATR-FTIR analysis of the exoskeleton verified the absence of any plastic residue. Deproteinization followed by demineralization produced 6.78 -5.29 % chitin, showing that plastic (polystyrene or plastic kitchen wrap) in the larvae diet resulted in heavier insect exoskeleton, but yielded slightly less chitin, with the lowest value obtained for plastic kitchen wrap in the insect diet. The deacetylation degree of 98.17-98.61% was determined from measured ATR-FTIR spectra. XRD analysis confirmed the presence of -chitin with a crystallinity index of 66.5-62% and crystallite size 4-5 nm. Thermogravimetric analysis showed similar degradation curves for all chitin samples, with two degradation steps. These results show that chitin sourced from exoskeleton of T. molitor larvae fed with plastic (polystyrene or plastic kitchen wrap) and contributing to significant biodegradation of major polluting materials can be a feasible and alternative source of chitin, further promoting a bio-circular economy.

AB - BACKGROUND
Fungi absorb and solubilize a broad spectrum of heavy metals such as vanadium (V), which makes them a main route of its entry into the biosphere. V as vanadate (V5+) is a potential medical agent due to its many metabolic actions such as interaction with phosphates in the cell, and especially its insulin-mimetic activity. Antidiabetic activity of V-enriched fungi has been studied in recent years, but the biological and chemical bases of vanadium action and status in fungi in general are poorly understood, with almost no information on edible fungi.
METHODS
This manuscript gives a deeper insight into the interaction of V5+ with Coprinellus truncorum, an edible autochthonous species widely distributed in Europe and North America. Vanadium uptake and accumulation as V5+ was studied by 51V NMR, while the reducing abilities of the mycelium were determined by EPR. 31P NMR was used to determine its effects on the metabolism of phosphate compounds, with particular focus on phosphate sugars identified using HPLC.
RESULTS
Vanadate enters the mycelium in monomeric form and shows no immediate detrimental effects on intracellular pH or polyphosphate (PPc) levels, even when applied at physiologically high concentrations (20 mM Na3VO4). Once absorbed, it is partially reduced to less toxic vanadyl (V4+) with notable unreduced portion, which leads to a large increase in phosphorylated sugar levels, especially glucose-1-phosphate (G1P) and fructose-6-phosphate (F6P).
CONCLUSIONS
Preservation of pH and especially PPc reflects maintenance of the energy status of the mycelium, i.e., its tolerance to high V5+ concentrations. Rise in G1P and F6P levels implies that the main targets of V5+ are most likely phosphoglucomutase and phosphoglucokinase(s), enzymes involved in early stages of G6P transformation in glycolysis and glycogen metabolism. This study recommends C. truncorum for further investigation as a potential antidiabetic agent.

AB - The impact of pruning techniques on the plant growth, yield components and fruit quality
traits of substrate-grown highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) cultivar 'Bluecrop'
were evaluated over four years (2019-2022). The orchard was planted in the village of Gruža
(Knić municipality, Serbia) in the spring of 2017 with 5-year-old nursery plants using 113 l
polypropylene pots spaced 0.8 m apart in a row and 3.0 m between rows (4,170 plants/ha). At
the onset of the trial the ‘Bluecrop’ plants were 8 years old. The two pruning techniques were
applied: i) conventional pruning (CP) - removal of the most unproductive canes at the center
of the canopy, and weak and excessively fruiting shoots from the top of bushes, and ii)
sectorial pruning (SP) - only removal of basal canes in ¼ of the canopy each year. The
average number of basal canes per bush was significantly lower in SP than in the CP
treatment (14.4 vs. 17.4 canes bush-1
, respectively). SP plants had thinner canes than CP
plants, which increased over the years of the study and reached a maximum diameter of 11.12
mm in 2022. CP had a positive influence on fruit yield (5.98 kg bush-1
), which was associated
with a 20% higher number of fruits per bush than in sectorial pruned plants. The fruit yield
increased in the first three years of the study, reaching a maximum value in 2021 (7.57 kg per
bush), whereas an opposite trend was observed in average fruit weight over the years, with the
lowest value reached in the last harvest year (1.81 g). Fruit weight and soluble solids content
were not affected by the pruning method, while the content of total acids, total anthocyanins
and total phenolics were significantly higher in fruit harvested from the SP treatment (0.70%,
37.04 mg eq mvd-3-G /100 g FW and 1.18 mg eq GA/g FW, respectively) along with the total
antioxidant capacity (8.39 mg eq AsA /g FW).

AB - Pharmaceutical and industrial utilization of synthetic chemicals has an immerse impact
on the environment. In that sense, novel chemicals with potential for industrial
application should be investigated for their behavior in reactions with hydroxyl radical,
simulating AOPs (Advanced Oxidation Processes). AOPs are known for being highly
effective in wastewater management and natural water remediation. In this paper,
exhaustive research on the radical scavenging activity of a newly synthesized
coumarin derivative (4HCBH), as a representative of the series of coumarin-
benzohydrazides with high antioxidative potential was conducted. This study took into
consideration the pH value range significant for practically all living organisms (pH=7.0-
8.5). According to the experimentally obtained results, the 4HCBH showed an increase
in radical scavenging activity, following the slight increase in pH values, which
suggested that the formation of anionic form of 4HCBH is responsible for its antiradical
activity. Further investigations led to the postulation of a novel mechanistic approach
called Sequential Proton Loss Electron Transfer – Radical-Radical Coupling (SPLET-
RRC), in which, by a series of steps, a new, stable compound was formed.
Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the product generated through SPLET-RRC
showed lower toxicity than the parent molecule.

AB - Cabbage is one of the most important vegetables from Brassicaceae family to which
biofertilisers is increasingly applied following the current trend in the cabbage organic
farming. The main goal of our study was to examine whether solely applicated biofertilisers
enhance head weight and other morphological parameters in cabbage. Experiment with three
Bejo Zaden cultivars ('Farao' F1, 'Tiara' F1, and 'Excalibur' F1) were conducted under the open
field conditions from April to June 2019. Two different microbiological fertilisers, Organic
balance and FitoHelp, were applied foliar, six times during the vegetation period, with a
battery sprayer. After harvest, several parameters were estimated: head weight, width and
height, number of leaves, internal core height and width. The results showed the highest
value of head weight (1264.89 g), head width (15.06 cm), head height (15.57 cm), number of
leaves (22.56), internal core height (8.01 cm) and internal core width (3.51 cm) in cultivar
'Excalibur' F1 compared to other two cultivars for fresh market. Application of both fertilisers
led to increased levels of all tested parameters compared to control. Furthermore, fertiliser
Organic balance showed the highest impact on all tested parameters, resulting in increasing
value of head weight by 78.6%. This study revealed that mixed culture fertiliser showed
greater impact in terms of head weight, number of leaves, and internal core width compared
to fertiliser containing a single strain of bacteria. Accordingly, with an exception in head and
internal core height, all examined factors showed statistically significant impact on tested
parameters, including their interaction.

AB - Mung bean (Vigna radiata L.) is a leguminous plant cultivated mainly in south-east Asia and used as an ingredient in local cuisine. Its principal nutritional value is contained in its constituents such as starch, proteins, (poly)phenols, and natural antioxidants. Fluorescence spectroscopy is increasingly used as a method of choice for food analysis; due to the presence of different fluorophores originating from aromatic amino acids and secondary metabolites, it is useful for proteins and phenolics detection. In this study, the total protein and phenolic contents of mung bean seed extracts were determined using the Bradford method and Folin–Ciocalteu (FC) reagent, respectively. Antioxidant activity was determined using DPPH (2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) assay. Fluorescence spectra were recorded for a series of excitation-emission wavelengths. Further, we used the multivariate analysis on the recorded excitation-emission fluorescence matrix of the studied samples. The results showed the presence of three different fluorescence components, with the position of the emission maximum corresponding to the fluorophore of proteins (component 1 with excitation/emission peak maxima at Ex 290/Em 345 nm) and phenolics (component 2 - Ex 295/Em 395 nm and component 3 - Ex 350/Em 450 nm). This fluorescence-based method could be a useful approach for estimating the nutrient properties of leguminous food.

AB - Food is a complex matrix of proteins, fats, minerals, vitamins, and other components. Various analytical methods are currently used for food testing. However, most of the used methods require sample preprocessing and expensive chemicals. New analytical methods are needed for quick and economic measurement of food quality and safety. Fluorescence spectroscopy is a simple and quick method to measure food quality, without sample preprocessing. This technique has been developed for food samples due to the application of a front-face measuring setup. Fluorescent compounds–fluorophores in the food samples are highly sensitive to their environment. Information about molecular structure and changes in food samples is obtained by the measurement of excitation–emission matrices of the endogenous fluorophores and by applying multivariate chemometric tools. Synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy is an advantageous screening mode used in food analysis. The fluorescent markers in food are amino acids tryptophan and tyrosine; the structural proteins collagen and elastin; the enzymes and co-enzymes NADH and FAD; vitamins; lipids; porphyrins; and mycotoxins in certain food types. The review provides information on the principles of the fluorescence measurements of food samples and the advantages of this method over the others. An analysis of the fluorescence spectroscopy applications in screening the various food types is provided.

AB - Honey bees have a very important role in pollinating plants, in addition to honey production. Bee
diseases are one of the reasons of a significant decrease in bee colonies in the world in recent years. Honey samples originating from hives with different infestations with N. ceranae were analyzed. Total phenolic content and total protein content were determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu assay and the Bradford assay, respectively. Fluorescence spectroscopy combined with PARAFAC was used to determine the spectral components originating from proteins (PFSC1) and phenolics (PFSC2) in honey samples, and their ratios were calculated. Phenols and proteins content in the honey samples, obtained by spectrophotometric quantification, decreases with increasing infestation levels in the respective hives infected with N. ceranae. A negative correlation was obtained for the ratio of PARAFAC components PFSC2/PFSC1 and the level of infestation with N. ceranae in honey samples. These results indicate that fluorescence spectroscopy combined with PARAFAC could be used as an optical tool for non-invasive and rapid screening of honey to estimate bee health status.

AB - In this work, titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanofibers doped with 0.5–5 mol%
zirconium ions (Zr4+) were synthesized by combining the sol-gel process and
electrospinning method, and calcined at 500 °C. The morphological, structural and
optical properties of pure and Zr-doped TiO2 nanofibers were investigated. According to
the XRD and FTIR analyses, the addition of Zr as a dopant suppressed the
transformation of anatase to rutile phase. Scanning electron microscopy showed that all
fibers were smooth, fragile and randomly oriented after the calcination process. HRTEM
analysis revealed that Zr4+ ions were incorporated at the substitutional sites in the anatase
TiO2 crystalline lattice. The photocatalytic efficiency for degradation of methylene blue
(MB) was examined for both pure and Zr-doped TiO2 samples. Nanofibers doped with
1% of Zr4+ ions have shown the highest photocatalytic activity of 98%, wich can be
explained by considering lower PL intensity in the PL spectrum of this sample,
indicating suppressed electron-hole recombination.

AB - Monocots and dicots differ in their boron (B) requirement, but also in their capacity to accumulate silicon (Si). Although an ameliorative effect of Si on B toxicity has been reported in various crops, differences among monocots and dicots are not clear, in particular in light of their ability to retain B in the leaf apoplast. In hydroponic experiments under controlled conditions, we studied the role of Si in the compartmentation of B within the leaves of wheat (Triticum vulgare L.) as a model of a high-Si monocot and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) as a model of a low-Si dicot, with the focus on the leaf apoplast. The stable isotopes 10B and 11B were used to investigate the dynamics of cell wall B binding capacity. In both crops, the application of Si did not affect B concentration in the root, but significantly decreased the B concentration in the leaves. However, the application of Si differently influenced the binding capacity of the leaf apoplast for excess B in wheat and sunflower. In wheat, whose capacity to retain B in the leaf cell walls is lower than in sunflower, the continuous supply of Si is crucial for an enhancement of high B tolerance in the shoot. On the other hand, the supply of Si did not contribute significantly in the extension of the B binding sites in sunflower leaves.

AB - Systematic analysis of electrical characteristics of BaCe0.75In0.25O3-δ (BCI25) sintered sample was performed in a
dry and a wet argon atmosphere in the 250 ◦C–700 ◦C temperature range. The water vapor sensing properties of
BCI25 porous film and its response and recovery times were investigated under different conditions of temperature
and water vapor concentration. The 30 μm thick film obtained from the powder calcined at 1050 ◦C
exhibited sensitivity comparable to that of the sintered sample with a significantly shorter response and recovery
times. While the sensitivity of the film gradually decreased with a decrease in partial pressure of water vapor (p
(H2O)), a noticeable sensitivity was still observed at p(H2O) of 200 Pa. Decrease in conductivity depended
logarithmically on the partial pressure of water with the slope of 0.52 that is close to the theoretical value. After
several cycles, the reusability test proved an almost unchanged ratio between the impedance value in the dry and
the wet Ar atmosphere (p(H2O) = 2.34 kPa), which implied that BCI25, having good stability and sensitivity, is a
promising high-temperature humidity sensor.

AB - In this study, we tried various cation substitutions at Bi-site (La3+, Eu3+) and Fesite (Nb5+
, Zr4+
) to explore their possible synergism and improvement of the
ferroelectric properties of bismuth ferrite. The cations with higher valence ought to
suppress the formation of structural defects during syntheses, such as oxygen and
bismuth vacancies. These defects are responsible for high leakage currents and low
breakdown voltages characteristic of pure BiFeO3. On the other hand, rare earth
cations at the Bi-site usually enable densification of the ceramics at a broader range
of temperatures, preventing bismuth loss and formation of defects and secondary
phases during sintering. However, dopant concentrations above 10–15 mol% may
give rise to a transition from polar, rhombohedral (R3c) to non-polar, orthorhombic
(Pnma) symmetry.
Thus, we synthesized pure and selected compositions doped BiFeO3 by a hydroevaporation method and determined the optimal calcination temperature by thermal
analyses of the precursor powders. Then we characterized ceramics samples using
X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and
polarization techniques. Although only 1 mol% Nb5+ decreased the leakage current,
it surprisingly deteriorated the ferroelectric properties of BiFeO3. Similar effect
exhibited the samples containing Zr4+ that showed no improvement compared with
undoped bismuth ferrite. On the contrary, La3+ and Eu3+ (incorporated at the Bi-site)
improved the ferroelectric properties as their concentrations increased, whereby the
samples doped with 15 mol% La exhibited higher remnant electric polarizations at
observed electric fields. The highest remnant electric polarization of 31.9 µC/cm2
at 150 kV/cm, was measured for Bi0.85La0.15Fe0.998Zr0.002O3, indicating the synergetic
effect of La3+ and Zr4+, which is limited to low Zr4+ concentrations.

AB - Natural polymers such as alginate, pectin, chitosan etc. were used as carriers for the immobilization of different types of enzymes. Among investigated enzymes, peroxidases hold a special place. Immobilized enzymes are frequently used in phenol removal reactions. In this research horseradish peroxidase was immobilized within alginate micro-beads. This natural polymer was previously oxidized with sodium periodate and modified with tyramine hydrochloride. Percent of oxidation was varied from 2.5 mol% to 10 mol%, and an increase in specific activity was noticed with increasing the oxidation percent. Immobilized peroxidases showed satisfactory stabilities after 10 days of storage. Phenol concentration in a batch reactor decreased during its oxidation with horseradish peroxidase immobilized on tyramine-alginate hydrogels.

AB - The first months are the most sensitive phase of oak seedling development. Light conditions have an important role in this sense, both from the physiological and management viewpoint. We investigated the response of pedunculate oak seedlings to three growth light intensities (100, 550 and 2000 μmol cm−2s−1) during development of the first and second growth flush. The low and high light intensities of PAR are supposed to mimic the effects of solar radiation under extreme natural conditions (closed canopy and open field). The response of seedlings to different light intensities was evaluated by determining the photochemical activity of photosystem II, leaf chlorophyll concentration and epidermal flavonoid accumulation for both growth flushes. At the end of the experiment (after 4.5 months) the effects of different treatments on growth parameters were also determined. We showed here that oak seedlings responded to varying light intensities by modifying their physiological and morphological traits of successive growth flushes. At medium light, seedlings had the highest PSII photochemical activity in the 2nd flush. High light induced very low photochemical efficiency of photosystem II in both growth flushes indicating the development of high non-photochemical quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence as part of photoprotective mechanism. In accordance with high photosynthetic yield at ML, the investment of photosynthates in growth, especially biomass allocation towards root system was confirmed. ML was optimal for seedling development in the first months. The results may contribute to a better understanding of oak seedling development and acclimation and could have importance for oak natural regeneration.

abstract = "The first months are the most sensitive phase of oak seedling development. The results may contribute to a better understanding of oak seedling development and acclimation and could have importance for oak natural regeneration.",

AB - Phenols are highly toxic organic compounds found in wastewater due to various industries’ pollution. Its removal is of great importance for human and animal health. Enzymatic wastewater treatment has several advantages over traditional methods. Enzyme immobilization onto solid carriers enables its reusability and lowers the cost of treatment. In this work, immobilized horseradish peroxidase on chemically modified alginate hydrogel was tested for phenol removal. The reusability of the tested immobilizate was monitored in repeated cycles. After five consecutive cycles, the remaining activity of the immobilized enzyme was 54%. The obtained result shows the potential for using this immobilizate for wastewater treatment.

AB - Street trees are important component of urban forest presenting a first barrier between air pollution
originated from vehicle traffic and pedestrians. It implies that an improvement of air quality in urban
areas greatly depends on green biomass, in short, the bigger and greener tree crown, better for human
health and wellbeing. Determination of Leaf Nitrogen Balance Index (LNBI) and chlorophyll
concentration (ChlC) by a non-invasive methodology and a user friendly instrument (Dualex 4,
Force), widely used in agronomy and horticulture, was tested here for the assessment of tree fitness in
urban zones. Investment of energy and resources either in growth or defence according to the tradeoff
strategy of plants may be indicated by LNBI, which approximately presents a Nitrogen/Carbon
ratio. We selected few tree species from Belgrade’s streets to determine those two parameters during
summer. We also presented the changes in those parameters of the introduced bamboo species within
ten years at several urban locations in Belgrade differing in air pollution aiming to evaluate
usefulness the LNBI parameter in access of multiyear exposure to the effect of intense vehicle traffic.
Numerous limiting factors for development of healthy tree crowns in urban ecosystem, such as low
capacity to cope with toxic pollutant, sensitivity to diseases, early senescence and etc., greatly depends
on tree species. We propose this methodology may also contribute in the process of choice of the
adequate tree species to be planted along streets.

AB - Uzorci vode iz reke Pek uzeti su u proleće 2022. godine. Analiza potencijalno toksičnih
elelemata (Hg, As, Zn, Cd, Pb, Ni, Fe, B, Cr, Mn i Cu) izvršena je pomoću optičke
emisione spektroskopije sa induktivno spregnutom plazmom (ICP-OES), a aromatičnih
ugljovodonika, policikličnih aromatičnih ugljovodonika i fenola gasnim hromatografom sa
masenom spektometrijom (GC-MS).
AB - Water samples from the Pek river were collected in the spring 2022. Analysis of potentially
toxic elements (Hg, As, Zn, Cd, Pb, Ni, Fe, B, Cr, Mn, and Cu) was performed using
inductively-coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), and aromatic
hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and phenol by gas chromatography-mass
spectrometry (GC-MS). Mn concentrations exceeded the MAC values prescribed for water.
Of organic compounds, only fluoranthene, naphthalene, and phenanthrene were detected.
Fluorescence spectroscopy was used for water screening on presence of aromatic
compounds. The results indicated that this method could be used as a fast screening tool for
water quality analysis.

AB - Individuals of common nase were sampled from three waterbodies (Kačer river, Zaovine, and Medjuvršje reservoirs) with different characteristics, types, and levels of anthropogenic pressure. The aims of this study were to determine the concentra-tions of 26 elements in gills, liver, and muscle using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES); determine the concentrations of 17 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in muscle tissue using gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection (GC–MS); compare these findings with fish condition (CF); and conduct human health risk and benefit assessments due to consumption of fish meat using target hazard quotient, target carcinogenic risk factor, Se:Hg molar ratio, Na:K and Ca:Mg ratios, and contribution of elements to human diet. Results indicated that in addition to the fact that the type of ecosystem (lentic vs. lotic) plays an important role in the fate and kinetics of pollutants, the degree of anthropogenic pressure is one of the most important factors of environmental pollution — Zaovine and Medjuvršje reservoirs (both lentic ecosystems) had the lowest and the highest levels of pollution, respectively. CF did not reflect the differences in accumula-tion of all analyzed elements in nase tissues. None of the 17 analyzed OCPs were detected due to the absence of recent use. Fish muscle was the least affected by metal pollution at all studied localities and could be safely used for consumption. We recorded several benefits for human health when using the nase meat in human diet.
