AB - In this paper, we have systematically studied the structural, morphological, and optical properties of Ni-doped TiO2, synthesized via a simple, cost-effective electrospinning method followed by calcination at 500 C. The nanofibers with a core-shell structure were relatively homogeneous, smooth and randomly oriented, and there were no significant differences in fiber diameters due to Ni2+ content. Core loss mapping using electron energy loss spectroscopy confirmed an even distribution of titanium and relatively uniform nickel in the fibers. It was found that doping with 0.5 mol.% Ni2+ decreased the rutile content, while doping with 1 mol.% Ni2+ resulted in a pure anatase phase with a significantly increased specific surface area (36.6 m2/g). Further increase in Ni2+ content (3-10 mol.%) not only prolonged the response of TiO2 nanofibers to visible light, but also increased the specific surface area (49.5 m2/g), decreased crystallite size (7 nm), and increased rutile content in TiO2 (33 wt.%). Photoluminescence analysis revealed that doping TiO2 with different amounts of Ni2+ leads to a gradual decrease of emission spectra intensity and red shift in the maxima positions. The XPS results confirmed that as the Ni2+ content enlarged, the Ti2+ and Ti3+ content increased significantly, effectively promoting the formation of oxygen vacancies. Raman analysis showed that an increase in nickel content (3-5 mol.%) led to a decrease and shift in peak intensity due to Ti3+ formation and also the possible presence of NiTiO3 phases. HRTEM analysis showed that Ni was doped into the substitution sites of both the anatase and rutile TiO2 lattice but had a stronger influence on the distortion of the anatase phase. The obtained results indicate that Ni-doped TiO2 nanofibers are good candidates for photocatalytic applications.

AB - Pure phase orthorhombic pseudobrookite (Fe2TiO5) was synthesized using a
modified sol-gel method. Bulk samples were obtained by uniaxial pressing of the
obtained powder into compacts sintered at 900 oC for 2 h. A noticeable NTC
thermistor effect was noted with a B20/55 value of 5747 K and high resistivity of 45
Mcm at 25 oC. A non-linear current-voltage characteristic was observed in the
voltage range (0.2–1100 V) at room temperature (25 oC). Non-saturated (lossy) P-E
loops were obtained at both measured frequencies (100 Hz and 1 kHz) more
expressed for the higher measured frequency, with the maximal polarization of
0.291 mikroC/cm2 and remanent polarization of 0.123 mikroC/cm2 for 20 kV/cm2 and 1 kHz.
Complex impedance measured in the temperature range 20–330 oC enabled analysis
of the contribution of grain boundary and grains to the conduction mechanism. Bulk
conductivity data determined in this temperature range was analyzed using
Jonscher’s universal dielectric response model and showed that the conduction
process followed the nearest neighbor hopping conduction mechanism.

AB - In this work, titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanofibers doped with 0.5–5 mol%
zirconium ions (Zr4+) were synthesized by combining the sol-gel process and
electrospinning method, and calcined at 500 °C. The morphological, structural and
optical properties of pure and Zr-doped TiO2 nanofibers were investigated. According to
the XRD and FTIR analyses, the addition of Zr as a dopant suppressed the
transformation of anatase to rutile phase. Scanning electron microscopy showed that all
fibers were smooth, fragile and randomly oriented after the calcination process. HRTEM
analysis revealed that Zr4+ ions were incorporated at the substitutional sites in the anatase
TiO2 crystalline lattice. The photocatalytic efficiency for degradation of methylene blue
(MB) was examined for both pure and Zr-doped TiO2 samples. Nanofibers doped with
1% of Zr4+ ions have shown the highest photocatalytic activity of 98%, wich can be
explained by considering lower PL intensity in the PL spectrum of this sample,
indicating suppressed electron-hole recombination.

AB - Pure, samarium (Sm3+) and zirconium (Zr4+) doped titanium dioxide (TiO2)
nanofibers were synthesized using the electrospinning method followed by
calcination at 500 °C for 1 h. The structure, morphology and optical properties of the
obtained nanofibers were investigated as a function of different Sm3+ and Zr4+

suppressed the transformation of anatase to rutile. After calcination all fibers were
smooth, fragile and randomly oriented. HRTEM analysis revealed that doping with
Sm didn’t affect the TiO2 crystal lattice whilst Zr4+ ions replaced the substitutional
sites in the anatase crystalline lattice. The effects of Sm3+ and Zr4+-dopant content
and different doses of photocatalyst on the photodegradation of methylene blue
(MB) were monitored under UV-light illumination. TiO2:0.5%Sm3+ and
TiO2:1.0%Zr4+ nanofibers have shown the highest photocatalytic activity of 97%
and 98% due to red shifting of the band gap towards visible light in the case of Sm
and suppressed electron-hole recombination shown in recorded PL spectra in the
case of Zr.

AB - Mixed spinel ferrites MgxNi1-xFe2O4 were synthesized via sol-gel combustion synthesis with citric acid as fuel, followed by calcination at 700 °C for 3 hours. Obtained powders were characterized via X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), X-ray photoelectron (XPS), FTIR and Raman spectroscopy and FESEM microscopy. Elemental composition was examined via energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Humidity sensing properties were tested by measuring AC impedance in a climactic chamber at 25 °C and in the relative humidity range of 40–90%. Temperature sensing properties were tested by measuring DC resistance at 40% RH in the temperature range 40–90 °C. Synthesized powders were proven to be pure spinel Fd 3m phase with spherical, slightly agglomerated particles. Substitution of Mg with Ni results in structural changes such as a change in inversion parameter and particle agglomeration, which influences sensing properties of the material. Results show that the sensing properties of magnesium ferrite can be improved by incorporating 10% of nickel in the spinel lattice structure. Mg0.9Ni0.1Fe2O4 exhibited higher temperature sensitivity and higher sensitivity towards humidity compared to MgFe2O4, while further substitution of Mg with Ni resulted in the decline of sensing properties, increase in particle size and agglomeration degree.

abstract = "Mixed spinel ferrites MgxNi1-xFe2O4 were synthesized via sol-gel combustion synthesis with citric acid as fuel, followed by calcination at 700 °C for 3 hours. Mg0.9Ni0.1Fe2O4 exhibited higher temperature sensitivity and higher sensitivity towards humidity compared to MgFe2O4, while further substitution of Mg with Ni resulted in the decline of sensing properties, increase in particle size and agglomeration degree.",

ZnO synthesized from nitrate precursors are more effective in inhibiting growth of
Salmonella and Staphylococcus Aureus. Antioxidant activity of ZnO NPs determined using
CUPRAC and ABTS assays showed higher activity of ZnO obtained using nitrate precursors.
The maximum scavenging activity of 90% was observed at the concentration of 10 mg/ml

After the exothermic reaction, amorphous powders were calcined at 700 °C ollowed by characterization with XRD, FTIR, XPS, EDS and Raman spectroscopy and FESEM
icroscopy. Synthesized powders were tested as humidity- and temperature-sensing materials in the form of thick films on interdigitated electrodes on alumina substrate in a climatic chamber. The physicochemical investigation of synthesized materials revealed a cubic spinel Fd3m phase, nanosized but agglomerated particles with a partially to completely inverse spinel structure with increasing Ni content. Ni0.1Mg0.9Fe2O4 showed the highest material constant (B30,90) value of 3747 K and temperature sensitivity (α) of −4.08%/K compared to pure magnesium ferrite (B30,90 value of 3426 K and α of −3.73%/K) and the highest average sensitivity towards humidity of 922 kΩ/%RH in the relative humidity (RH) range of 40–90% at the working temperature of 25 °C.

AB - Pure and samarium (Sm3+) - or zirconium (Zr4+)-doped TiO2 nanofibers were synthesized by electro-
spinning method followed by calcination at 500 °C for 1 h. As-spun fibers were smooth, straight and
continuous, whilst EDS analysis confirmed the fiber composition and incorporation of dopants in
the fibers. Doping with Sm3+ and Zr4+ greatly inhibited the phase transformation of anatase to
rutile, by surrounding of Sm3+ ions through formation of Ti-O-Sm bonds and by replacement of
Ti4+ ions with larger Zr4+ ions. This was confirmed by HRTEM and SAED analysis. The size of
nanofibers was determined to be 133 nm, 175 nm and 155 nm for pure, (0.5%)Sm3+:TiO2 and
(1%)Zr4+:TiO2, respectively. After cal- cination, TiO2 crystal lattice with interplanar spacing of
0.353 nm of (101) crystal plane was not significantly disturbed by Sm doping whilst crystal
lattice spacing of 0.357 nm of (101) planes of anatase phase in case TiO2:1.0%Zr4+,
significantly differs from the value of pure TiO2 (0.352 nm), thus implying that Zr was
doped into substitutional sites of the TiO2 lattice. The indirect band gaps were
calculated to be in the range 3.07–3.24 eV. TiO2:0.5%Sm3+ and TiO2:1.0%Zr4+ exhibited higher
specific surface area, of 47.1 and 59.4 m2/g, respectively, than pure TiO2 fibers (19.7 m2/g).
Effects of Sm3+ and Zr4+ dopant content on the photodegradation efficiency of methylene blue (MB)
were studied. TiO2:0.5%Sm3+ and TiO2:1.0%Zr4+ nanofibers have shown the highest photocatalytic
activity of 97% and 98% with constant rates 0.01768 min−1 and 0.01939 min−1,

AB - Metal oxide nanomaterials have gained a lot of attention during last decades due to their potential applications in wastewater treatment, energy storage, sensors, food packaging, etc. To date, these materials have been synthesized by different chemical and physical techniques. However many of them employ environmentally unfriendly solvents and toxic chemical compounds. To tackle this problem, use of renewable biomass such as plants and fungi as reducing or stabilizing agents in green synthesis has been considered as more sustainable option compared to toxic chemical compounds. These biological substances also behave as capping agent, which control the size and the shape of the nanoparticles. In this work, ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) have been prepared via simple, low cost and ecofriendly method using citrus fruit peel and extracts, Agaricus bisporus powder and extract as biological reducing agents. Zinc nitrate and zinc acetate were used as source of zinc ions. Structural and optical properties were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Zeta potential, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, UV-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy and Photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). Morphological features were characterized by Field Emission Scanning Electron microscopy (FESEM) and High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM). Antibacterial and antioxidant activity was tested and evaluated.

Antibacterial and antioxidant activity was tested and evaluated.",

AB - Nickel-manganite is a versatile material used in many technology applications. One of the established uses is as a supercapacitor electrode. The advantage of this type of material is the abundance of required metals, compared to noble metals, the synthesis methods' simplicity, and high redox activity. Metal-oxide battery materials are usually combined with activated carbon to enhance the specific surface area and add to energy storage capacity via surface charge accumulation. In the current work, nickel manganite was synthesized via the sol-gel combustion synthesis method with glycine as fuel and nitrate ions as oxidizers. The post-combustion amorphous powder was calcined at temperatures between 300 and 800 °C. Powders were structurally characterized. Obtained materials were tested as energy storage electrodes in a three-electrode cell setup in 6 M KOH aqueous solution as electrolyte. Methods embedded in electrochemical characterization were cyclic voltammetry (CV), electric impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and constant current chronopotentiometry at different current densities to obtain galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) curves. Results show considerable charge storage activity, which can be ascribed to oxido reduction reactions of manganese ions and charge accumulation on the surface of the activated carbon.

AB - Transition metal oxides (TMOs) are promising materials because of their specific properties enabling their application in energy solutions, such as their pseudocapacitive behavior enabling utilization as electrode materials in supercapacitors. Activated carbon is a material well known as an electric double layer capacitor (EDLC). Bringing together the two different capacitor materials- TMOs as pseudocapacitors and carbon materials as EDL capacitors is the goal for generating future generation supercapacitors. Nickel manganite is a material of interest because of various oxidation states of manganese which provide its reactivity in oxidoreduction reactions, enhancing the pseudocapacitive behavior. Herein, we synthesized nano-sized nickel manganite by a sol-gel combustion synthesis process using glycine as fuel and subsequent calcination process. The structure and morphology of synthesized material was investigated via XRD, FESEM, and FTIR spectroscopy. Specific surface area and was determined from measured nitrogen
desorption/desorption isotherms. Activated carbon was obtained by pyrolytic carbonization of alginate hydrogel in nitrogen atmosphere and activation with KOH. The material was combined with synthesized NiMn2O4 nanopowder and tested as supercapacitor electrode. The second alternative was incorporating NiMn2O4 powder into alginate hydrogel, followed by pyrolysis in nitrogen atmosphere to obtain a NiMn2O4 -activated
carbon composite. The obtained materials were electrochemically characterized with cyclic voltammetry (LV) and galvanostatic chronopotentiometry to get galvanostatic charge-discharge curves. We calculated high specific capacitance values ranging to several hundred F/g, showing our hybrid material is a promising electrode in a supercapacitor system.

AB - Problems that countries all over the world have in common are dependence of economy and energy production on fossil fuels. There is a growing need for energy production and storage routes that are safe for the environment, renewable, efficient and cheap. One of the directions in which science is moving forward is discovering materials suitable for use in batteries and supercapacitors to improve their operating potential, electrical capacity or biocompatibility. The objective is also to synthesize materials for batteries or supercapacitors that are cheap, consist of earth abundant elements and have high electrochemical activity. In this work, mixed nickel-magnesium ferrites NixMg1−xFe2O4, with x being 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9 and 1, were synthesized via sol-gel combustion synthesis with citric acid used as fuel and nitrate ions used as oxidizing agents. Combusted powders were calcined at 700 °C. The structure and morphology of the powders were characterized with X-ray diffraction method (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. The band gap was calculated by using UV/Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). Samples were cast on nickel foam and tested as energy storage materials in a three-electrode setup in 3 M KOH aqueous solution as electrolyte. The methods used were cyclic voltammetry (CV) and constant current chronopotentiometry to obtain galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) curves. Results show that all of the synthesized materials show battery-type charge storage in alkaline electrolyte due to the formation of metal cation oxyhydroxides. With increasing nickel content, electrochemical activity drops. The highest value of capacity, 34.3 mA h g-1 at the current density of 500 mA g-1 is ascribed to magnesium ferrite, MgFe2O4.

AB - An emerging technology of active packaging enables prolongation of food shelf life by limiting the oxygen transfer and the reactivity of free radicals, which both destruct food freshness. In this work, Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles were synthesized using a modified sol–gel method and evaluated as an enforcement of alginate food packaging film. Pure phase Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles had an average particle size of 44 nm and rhombohedral morphology. Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles induce no cell damage of human Caco-2 epithelial cells and show no inhibitory effect towards growth of a panel of bacterial strains, suggesting good biocompatibility. Films obtained by incorporation of Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles into alginate using the solvent casting method show no migration of iron or titanium ions from films to food simulants again suggesting their safety as a packaging material. Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles also showed strong antioxidant efficiency as determined using the DPPḢ assay, and confirmed further in a preservation test on fresh fruit.

AB - Novel crystalline iron-titanate fibers were synthesized for the first time to the best of our knowledge, through a simple, low cost electrospinning method followed by calcination treatment at different temperatures (500–750 °C for 3 h and at 500 °C for 6 h and at 550 °C for 4 h). The fibers were prepared from a precursor solution containing polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), iron(III) nonahydrate, titanium isopropoxide, N,N-Dimethylformamide and ethanol. As spun fibers were smooth, straight, beadless and uniform forming a nonwoven fibrous mat, with an average diameter of ca. 205 nm. Upon calcination in air the PVP matrice was removed and XRD and FTIR analysis showed that the duration of the calcination process, besides the temperature, had a direct influence on phase formation. Pure phase of pseudobrookite was obtained at 600 °C, 500 °C for 6 h and at 550 °C for 4 h. In addition, the morphology of obtained nanofibers was directly affected by the calcination temperature. The surface of fibers obtained after calcination was no longer smooth and the fiber diameter decreased due to complete degradation of PVP. At 700 oC and 750 °C, fibers were thicker which can be attributed to growth of Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles and simultaneous coalescence of small particles. All samples exhibited a type IV nitrogen adsorption isotherm with a type- H3 indicating slit-shaped mesoporous structure. The BET surface areas of 500 oC for 6 h, 550 oC for 4 h and 600 oC for 3 h were estimated to be 62, 38.7 and 33.2 m2/g, respectively.

The BET surface areas of 500 oC for 6 h, 550 oC for 4 h and 600 oC for 3 h were estimated to be 62, 38.7 and 33.2 m2/g, respectively.",

AB - NiMn2O4, with a cubic spinel structure and numerous and various applications in modern technology, were synthesized with two synthetic routes: sol-gel combustion method with glycine as fuel and electrospinning method with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). Both amorphous powders from sol-gel synthesis and as-spun fibers from electrospinning synthesis were calcined, electrospun fibers at 400 °C and the sol-gel synthesized powders at 800 °C. Electrospun fibers were previously characterized with DTA-TGA to investigate the influence of thermal process on a polymer fiber. The obtained powders were characterized accordingly. Structural analysis was done via X-ray diffraction (XRD) and results show spinel structure with no impurity. The texture and morphology was investigated via N2 physisorption and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. Chemical states of elements were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrochemical performance of the synthesized materials as supercapacitors was tested via cyclic voltammetry (CV), electric impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and chronopotentiometry (CP) to aquire galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) curves. Experiments were done in 6 M KOH solution with nickel foam as a working electrode. The results show good electrochemical capacity circa 200 F/g, with the potential for further structural improvement of the materials.

AB - Background: Food safety and food security remain the major concern of consumers and the food industry. Bacterial contamination continues to be a crucial food safety issue. Smart packaging incorporates both active and intelligent components. Intrinsic antibacterial activity, oxygen and ethylene scavenging (active) and the sensing (intelligent) properties of metal oxide nanoparticles are in research focus for application in smart food packaging, especially bio-nanocomposite films. Scope and approach: Metal oxide nanoparticle properties are closely linked to their morphology resulting from the synthesis process. In this review, we cover current innovative synthesis methods for obtaining metal oxide nanoparticles and current incorporation techniques used to obtain smart (active and/or intelligent) packaging, focusing on bio-nanocomposites, commonly used metal oxides and future mixed metal or doped metal oxides. Taking into account safety, we focus on current legislation, and methods for risk assessment due to particle release from the packaging material and a summary of cytotoxic studies of metal oxide nanoparticles on human cells and the gut microbiota. Key findings and conclusions: Antimicrobial effectiveness of metal oxide nanoparticles is highly dependent on morphology as a result of the synthesis method. Solution casting and electrospinning are innovative methods applied to synthesize metal oxide incorporated biopolymer films for active packaging with improved mechanical and barrier properties combined with active components (antimicrobial, ethylene scavenging). Metal oxides show sensitivity and selectivity to most gases produced during food spoilage. In selection of metal oxide for smart packaging, particle migration and cytotoxic activity are key issues requiring careful and detailed characterization.

AB - CoxMg1-xFe2O4 (where x was 0.0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9 and 1) spinel ferrites were synthesized by the sol-gel combustion method using citric acid as fuel, following the rules of propellant chemistry. Amorphous powders were then calcined at 700 degrees C for 3 h. Structural analysis by X-Ray diffraction (XRD), FTIR and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the formation of a cubic spinel structure where the cation distribution and inversion degree depended on the Co2+ and Mg2+ ion content. Accordingly, the lattice parameter varied between 8.3703 angstrom (MgFe2O4) and 8.3919 A (Co-0.9 Mg0.1Fe2O4) as did the crystallite size, from 34 nm (Co0.1Mg0.9Fe2O4) to 48 nm (Co0.9Mg0.1Fe2O4). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed the formation of multigrain agglomerates. Determined values of the maximal and remanent magnetization, as well as coercive field, depended on the Co2+ and Mg2+ ion content and increased with substitution of diamagnetic Mg2+ ions with magnetic Co2+ ions. Most impressive is the increase of the coercive field from 74 Oe for MgFe2O4 to 1000 Oe for CoFe2O4, as well as an increase of magnetization in the field of 10 kOe from 27.4 emu g(-1) to 75.7 emu g(-1). The determined optical band gaps from UV/Vis DRS measurements showed a strong dependence on cation content, morphology, and crystallite size, decreasing from 2.09 eV for MgFe2O4 to 1.42 eV for CoFe2O4. The photocatalytic efficiency of as-synthesized ferrites was investigated by monitoring photocatalytic degradation of Methylene Blue (MB) under natural sunlight, and artificial light source emitting visible light. Different conditions of MB degradation such as photocatalyst loading, molar concentration of MB, and pH values were investigated. Results have shown that under both visible light and natural sunlight, excessive amounts of cobalt retarded the photocatalytic process. Co0.9Mg0.1Fe2O4 showed considerable activity (74.5% after 4 h) that is unexpected but possibly connected to structural anomalies. The best photocatalytic activity under natural sunlight was achieved by MgFe204 (82% after 4 h), while the best photocatalytic activity under visible light was achieved by Co0.1Mg0.9Fe2O4 (79% after 4 h).

AB - Nickel manganite nanocrystalline fibers were obtained by electrospinning and subsequent calcination at 400 degrees C. As-spun fibers were characterized by TG/DTA, Scanning Electron Microscopy and FT-IR spectroscopy analysis. X-ray diffraction and FT-IR spectroscopy analysis confirmed the formation of nickel manganite with a cubic spinel structure, while N-2 physisorption at 77 K enabled determination of the BET specific surface area as 25.3 m(2)/g and (BJH) mesopore volume as 21.5 m(2)/g. The material constant (B) of the nanocrystalline nickel manganite fibers applied by drop-casting on test interdigitated electrodes on alumina substrate, dried at room temperature, was determined as 4379 K in the 20-50 degrees C temperature range and a temperature sensitivity of -4.95%/K at room temperature (25 degrees C). The change of impedance with relative humidity was monitored at 25 and 50 degrees C for a relative humidity (RH) change of 40 to 90% in the 42 Hz pi 1 MHz frequency range. At 100 Hz and 25 degrees C, the sensitivity of 327.36 +/- 80.12 k omega/%RH was determined, showing that nickel manganite obtained by electrospinning has potential as a multifunctional material for combined humidity and temperature sensing.

abstract = "Nickel manganite nanocrystalline fibers were obtained by electrospinning and subsequent calcination at 400 degrees C. At 100 Hz and 25 degrees C, the sensitivity of 327.36 +/- 80.12 k omega/%RH was determined, showing that nickel manganite obtained by electrospinning has potential as a multifunctional material for combined humidity and temperature sensing.",

AB - Nanostructured Fe2TiO5 (pseudobrookite), a mixed metal oxide material holds significant promise for utilization in energy and environmental applications. However, its full application is still hindered due to the difficulty to synthesize monophasic Fe2TiO5 with high crystallinity and a large specific surface area. Herein, Fe2TiO5 nanofibers were synthesized via a versatile and low-cost electrospinning method, followed by a calcination process at different temperatures. We found a significant effect of the calcination process and its duration on the crystalline phase in the form of either pseudobrookite or pseudobrookite-hematite-rutile and the morphology of calcined nanofibers. The crystallite size increased whereas the specific surface area decreased with an increase in calcination temperature. At higher temperatures, the growth of Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles and simultaneous coalescence of small particles was noted. The highest specific surface area was obtained for the sample calcined at 500 degrees C for 6 h (S-BET = 64.4 m(2) g(-1)). This work opens new opportunities in the synthesis of Fe2TiO5 nanostructures using the electrospinning method and a subsequent optimized calcination process for energy-related applications.

AB - Nanocrystalline nickel manganite (NiMn2O4) powder with a pure cubic spinel phase structure was synthesized via sol-gel combustion and characterized with XRD, FT-IR, XPS and SEM. The powder was mixed with sodium alginate gel to form a nano-biocomposite gel, dried at room temperature to form a thick film and characterized with FT-IR and SEM. DC resistance and AC impedance of sensor test structures obtained by drop casting the nano-biocomposite gel onto test interdigitated PdAg electrodes on an alumina substrate were measured in the temperature range of 20-50 degrees C at a constant relative humidity (RH) of 50% and at room temperature (25 degrees C) in the RH range of 40-90%. The material constant obtained from the measured decrease in resistance with temperature was determined to be 4523 K, while the temperature sensitivity at room temperature (25 degrees C) was -5.09%/K. Analysis of the complex impedance plots showed a dominant influence of grains. The decrease in complex impedance with increase in temperature confirmed the negative temperature coefficient effect. The grain resistance and grain relaxation frequency were determined using an equivalent circuit. The activation energy for conduction was determined as 0.45 eV from the temperature dependence of the grain resistance according to the small polaron hopping model, while the activation energy for relaxation was 0.43 eV determined from the Arrhenius dependence of the grain relaxation frequency on temperature.

AB - This paper presents an overview of semiconductor materials used in gas sensors, their technology, design, and application. Semiconductor materials include metal oxides, conducting polymers, carbon nanotubes, and 2D materials. Metal oxides are most often the first choice due to their ease of fabrication, low cost, high sensitivity, and stability. Some of their disadvantages are low selectivity and high operating temperature. Conducting polymers have the advantage of a low operating temperature and can detect many organic vapors. They are flexible but affected by humidity. Carbon nanotubes are chemically and mechanically stable and are sensitive towards NO and NH3, but need dopants or modifications to sense other gases. Graphene, transition metal chalcogenides, boron nitride, transition metal carbides/nitrides, metal organic frameworks, and metal oxide nanosheets as 2D materials represent gas-sensing materials of the future, especially in medical devices, such as breath sensing. This overview covers the most used semiconducting materials in gas sensing, their synthesis methods and morphology, especially oxide nanostructures, heterostructures, and 2D materials, as well as sensor technology and design, application in advance electronic circuits and systems, and research challenges from the perspective of emerging technologies.

AB - Nanocrystalline iron manganite powder was synthesized using the sol-gel combustion process, with glycine as fuel. It was further calcined at 900 degrees C for 8 h, resulting in the formation of a loose cubic FeMnO3 powder with a small specific surface area, net-like structure and plate-like particles as confirmed by XRD, N-2 physisorption, FESEM and TEM analyses. The metal ion release was studied by ICP-OES and showed that less than 10 ppb of Fe or Mn ions were released by leaching in water, but 0.36 ppm Fe and 3.69 ppm Mn was found in LB (Luria-Bertani) bacterial medium. The generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was monitored in distilled water and bacterial medium and showed that FeMnO3 particles do not generate O-2 & x2d9;(-) ions with or without UV irradiation, but synthesize H2O2 and show an antioxidative effect. Besides the higher stability of FeMnO3 particles in aqueous solution they showed an inhibitory effect on Bacillus subtilis growth in LB medium even at low concentrations (0.01 mg ml(-1)), but not in BHI medium even at 1 mg ml(-1). This study points out that the mechanism of antibacterial action of engineered metal oxides needs continued investigation and specific experimental controls.
