AB - Iron manganite (FeMnO3) powder with a cubic (bixbyite, Ia (3) over bar) crystal structure was obtained by a solid state reaction. Thick film paste (powder + organic vehicles) was screen printed on alumina substrate with test interdigitated PdAg electrodes. Significant porosity (60.6%) composed of macropores (larger than 100 nm) was determined by Hg porosimetry, changing only slightly from the first extrusion run indicating a stable pore system. Hg porosimetry evaluation of thick film samples enabled estimation of true textural parameters of the thick film compared to powder. Impedance response of the thick film sensor was monitored in a humidity chamber in the relative humidity (RH) range 30-90%, at room temperature (25 degrees C) and frequency range from 42 Hz to 1 MHz. At 100 Hz the impedance reduced from 10.41 M Omega for RH 30% to 0.68 M Omega for RH 90%. Analysis of complex impedance using an equivalent circuit showed the dominant influence of grain boundaries. The sensor response and recovery was fast (several seconds) and a relatively low hysteresis value of 2.8% was obtained.

AB - Cellulose, xylan and lignin, as well as maize cell wall, were used as modifiers of carbon paste electrode. Comparative analysis of electrochemical performance of each modifier toward heavy metal detection was performed. A higher affinity of biomass constituents for lead ions than for copper ions influenced simultaneous detection of lead and copper ions. The new procedure for the simultaneous detection of lead and copper ions based on their co-adsorption was presented.

AB - The electrochemistry of catecholamine neurotransmitters and their precursor l-dopa has been widely studied due to their relevance as biologically important compounds. The detection of these compounds from aqueous solution is hindered by the coexistence of quinone or hydroquinone. However, it was suggested that quinones adsorbed on the electrode surface can enhance catechol detection. In order to estimate the degree of interaction between quinones and l-dopa, cyclic voltammetry and UV-Vis spectroscopic study was performed. A sesquiterpenoid hydroquinone, isolated from the marine sponge Dysidea avara (avarol), has been used in this study. The change of apparent heterogeneous rate constant with different avarol/l-dopa ratio indicated that charge transfer could be enhanced at some extent. In addition to this, the obtained results for avarol and hydroquinone (its structural element) were compared. UV-Vis spectroscopic analysis confirmed interaction between l-dopa and avarol or hydroquinone. Taken all together, the interaction of l-dopa was stronger with hydroquinone than with avarol, presumably reflecting the conformational restrains of avarol caused by its terpenoid moiety.

AB - The aim of the present study was to synthesize a composite of raw interstratified montmorillonite-kaolinite clay (Mt-K) with TiO2 as an additive by mechanochemical activation and investigate its usability as low-cost adsorbent for simultaneous removal of heavy metals from acidic aqueous solutions. The composite synthesized with amorphous TiO2 (TiO(2,)a) showed a significantly better removal ability of heavy metals from highly acidic solutions (pH = 2.0-4.0) compared with the Mt-K milled for an optimum period of time of 19 h (Mt-K,m) and composite synthesized with crystalline TiO2 (TiO(2,)c). As both of the composites showed the same morphologies, the same distribution of TiO2 particles on the clay matrix, the same particle size distribution (PSD) dependencies and point of zero charge (pH(PZC)) values, it has to be noticed that the difference in the adsorption behavior lies only in the different crystalline forms of the additive, i.e. TiO2 that was used for the composite preparation. It has been shown that 20% of TiO(2,)a was the optimal amount of an additive in the composite to achieve improved adsorption ability.

AB - The properties of ferrite material as well as geometrical parameters determine the efficiency of ferrite component in electromagnetic interference (EMI) applications. Due to the presence of ferrite material, EMI suppressor behaves as low pass filter (i.e. as a frequency dependent resistor) and provides signal free from distortions. Near ferrimagnetic resonant frequency, component has maximal impedance and efficiently suppresses noise. Better suppression can be achieved by making the conductive layer longer. Three simple structures are analyzed: Line, Zig-zag and Double coil. Nevertheless, longer conductive lines introduce parasitic capacitance, which causes the maximal impedance frequency shift towards lower frequencies. The aim of this paper is to investigate the efficiency of simple structures of EMI suppressors in different ferrite materials. Two Ni-Zn materials are used for fabrication of EMI suppressors: low permeability F14 material (suitable for suppression above 200 MHz; initial permeability er= 220), and high permeability F19 material (which is used for suppression in the range from 20MHz to 200MHz; er=1000). Comparison of the same structure with identical geometrical parameters in F14 and F19 material in the frequency range 1MHz–3GHz shows that the device in low permeability F14 material achieves greater impedance and better suppression (up to 25%).
