AB - Temperature- and humidity-sensing properties were evaluated of NixMg1-x spinel ferrites (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) synthesized by a sol-gel combustion method using citric acid as fuel and nitrate ions as oxidizing agents. After the exothermic reaction, amorphous powders were calcined at 700 °C ollowed by characterization with XRD, FTIR, XPS, EDS and Raman spectroscopy and FESEM
icroscopy. Synthesized powders were tested as humidity- and temperature-sensing materials in the form of thick films on interdigitated electrodes on alumina substrate in a climatic chamber. The physicochemical investigation of synthesized materials revealed a cubic spinel Fd3m phase, nanosized but agglomerated particles with a partially to completely inverse spinel structure with increasing Ni content. Ni0.1Mg0.9Fe2O4 showed the highest material constant (B30,90) value of 3747 K and temperature sensitivity (α) of −4.08%/K compared to pure magnesium ferrite (B30,90 value of 3426 K and α of −3.73%/K) and the highest average sensitivity towards humidity of 922 kΩ/%RH in the relative humidity (RH) range of 40–90% at the working temperature of 25 °C.

AB - In this study, we report the influence of vanadium oxide (VO), as a photosensitive component, on the photoactivity of TiO2 nanotubes (TNTs). A series of TNTs of varying tube diameter were synthesized by the anodization of titanium foils at different voltages, while vanadium oxide was deposited on TNTs by wet chemical deposition. An improvement in the optical properties of nanotubes was observed after the deposition of vanadium oxide. An improvement in the optical properties (redshift in UV-Vis spectra) of TNTs and TNT/VO was noted. The photocatalytic activity was improved with increasing tube diameter, while it was weakened after the deposition of VO. Furthermore, photoactivity was investigated in photodiodes based on TNTs or TNT/VO and single crystals of CH3NH3PbI3. The photoelectric measurement revealed that different TNT diameters did not influence the I-V characteristic of the photodiodes, while the deposition of VO improved the photocurrent for smaller TNTs

AB - Manganese doped SrTiO3 powders with various manganese dioxide weight percentages in the range of 1.5, 3 and 6 wp% were prepared by a solid-state method in the presence of mechanical activation (10, 30 and 120 minutes). A systematic investigation by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), particle size analisys (PSA), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) methods and Raman spectroscopy has been undertaken to evaluate the role of dopants on the microstructural and morphological study of the perovskite oxide obtained. The optical properties of the different manganese doped and activated SrTiO3 powders have been also evaluated. Mn insertion in SrTiO3 is discussed considering the possibility for Mn ions to occupy both Ti4+ and Sr2+ sites as well as manganese segregation and Mn incorporation-related non-homogeneities. The results demonstrated that Mn has substituted into the lattice and surface layers of the particles of SrTiO3 powders and the absorption onset shifted to higher values of wavelengths with increasing time of activation and dopant concentration. The lowest value of the band gap (Eg=3.10 eV) was registered with the longest activation for 120 minutes and the highest concentration of dopant (6 wp%). Combining doping with mechanical activation lower values of band gap can be achieved and that fact could be used in subsequent studies to make Mn-SrTiO3 more suitable visible-light photocatalysts.

AB - In this preliminary study, we applied the Multivariate Curve Resolution- Alternating Least Squares (MCR-ALS) method to analyze the excitation-emission matrices of multifloral honey samples, combined with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to estimate infection of honey bee colonies with N. ceranae or V. destructor. Fluorescence spectroscopy combined with MCR-ALS was used to determine the ratio of the spectral components originating from proteins (C1) and phenolics (C2), two minor but essential constituents of honey, as a ratiometric indicator of infection level in related hives. The C1/C2 ratio decreased linearly with the increase of infection in both N. ceranae and V. destructor cases, the R (2) was 0.941 and 0.912, respectively. Additionally, DSC has shown that the magnitude of changes in sugar environments of the honey samples, reflected in sugar phase transitions, rises with increasing infection level in bee colonies. These results indicate that fluorescence combined with MCR-ALS could be used for rapid, non-destructive and cheap screening of honey to estimate the level of infection of honey bee colonies.

AB - Problems that countries all over the world have in common are dependence of economy and energy production on fossil fuels. There is a growing need for energy production and storage routes that are safe for the environment, renewable, efficient and cheap. One of the directions in which science is moving forward is discovering materials suitable for use in batteries and supercapacitors to improve their operating potential, electrical capacity or biocompatibility. The objective is also to synthesize materials for batteries or supercapacitors that are cheap, consist of earth abundant elements and have high electrochemical activity. In this work, mixed nickel-magnesium ferrites NixMg1−xFe2O4, with x being 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9 and 1, were synthesized via sol-gel combustion synthesis with citric acid used as fuel and nitrate ions used as oxidizing agents. Combusted powders were calcined at 700 °C. The structure and morphology of the powders were characterized with X-ray diffraction method (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. The band gap was calculated by using UV/Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). Samples were cast on nickel foam and tested as energy storage materials in a three-electrode setup in 3 M KOH aqueous solution as electrolyte. The methods used were cyclic voltammetry (CV) and constant current chronopotentiometry to obtain galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) curves. Results show that all of the synthesized materials show battery-type charge storage in alkaline electrolyte due to the formation of metal cation oxyhydroxides. With increasing nickel content, electrochemical activity drops. The highest value of capacity, 34.3 mA h g-1 at the current density of 500 mA g-1 is ascribed to magnesium ferrite, MgFe2O4.

In this work, Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles were synthesized using a modified sol–gel method and evaluated as an enforcement of alginate food packaging film. Pure phase Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles had an average particle size of 44 nm and rhombohedral morphology. Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles induce no cell damage of human Caco-2 epithelial cells and show no inhibitory effect towards growth of a panel of bacterial strains, suggesting good biocompatibility. Films obtained by incorporation of Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles into alginate using the solvent casting method show no migration of iron or titanium ions from films to food simulants again suggesting their safety as a packaging material. Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles also showed strong antioxidant efficiency as determined using the DPPḢ assay, and confirmed further in a preservation test on fresh fruit.

AB - Sintering and phase transition are often superimposed at dimensional change diagram recorded during heating. Phase transition kinetic is thus hard to deconvolute due to the superposition of the sintering and phase transition dimensional change phenomena. Metastabile perovskite phase ZnTiO3has transition to stabile spinel Zn2TiO4which occurs at 945oC with high kinetic rate. Nano powder with 40 nm particle diameter was pressed uniaxially at 200 MPa pressure without binder to form compact that will be consequently sintered. Dimensional change during heating was monitored using dilatometric thermo-mechanical analyzer TMA model SETSYS Evolution. Lever`s rule was used to calculate amount of the emerging phase during phase transition. The compacted specimens were treated on the nonisothermal schedule up to 1050oC.Sintering phenomenon of the ZnTiO3 nanopowder compact was also recorded up to 900oCwith isothermal holding of 25 minutes where phase transition was avoided due to lower temperature and isothermal holding. Second run heating of the obtained sintered specimens were recorded with the heating schedule of non-isothermal heating up to 1050oC. Kinetic of the phase transition was obtained from dilatograms recorded during sintering and from bulk on the second run heating. Furthermore, phase transition kinetics was obtained by subsequent data subtraction of the sintering curves without phase transition from the dilatation sintering curves containing phase transition. In such a manner complex kinetics of phenomena such as sintering, linear expansion and phase transition recorded as dimensional change during heating brings the recognition of their mutual interconnected relations. Also application of these mathematical operations on dilatometric data leads to the established procedure for the sintering and phase transition data treatment.

AB - NiMn2O4, with a cubic spinel structure and numerous and various applications in modern technology, were synthesized with two synthetic routes: sol-gel combustion method with glycine as fuel and electrospinning method with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). Both amorphous powders from sol-gel synthesis and as-spun fibers from electrospinning synthesis were calcined, electrospun fibers at 400 °C and the sol-gel synthesized powders at 800 °C. Electrospun fibers were previously characterized with DTA-TGA to investigate the influence of thermal process on a polymer fiber. The obtained powders were characterized accordingly. Structural analysis was done via X-ray diffraction (XRD) and results show spinel structure with no impurity. The texture and morphology was investigated via N2 physisorption and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. Chemical states of elements were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrochemical performance of the synthesized materials as supercapacitors was tested via cyclic voltammetry (CV), electric impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and chronopotentiometry (CP) to aquire galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) curves. Experiments were done in 6 M KOH solution with nickel foam as a working electrode. The results show good electrochemical capacity circa 200 F/g, with the potential for further structural improvement of the materials.

AB - Nanostructured Fe2TiO5 (pseudobrookite), a mixed metal oxide material holds significant promise for utilization in energy and environmental applications. However, its full application is still hindered due to the difficulty to synthesize monophasic Fe2TiO5 with high crystallinity and a large specific surface area. Herein, Fe2TiO5 nanofibers were synthesized via a versatile and low-cost electrospinning method, followed by a calcination process at different temperatures. We found a significant effect of the calcination process and its duration on the crystalline phase in the form of either pseudobrookite or pseudobrookite-hematite-rutile and the morphology of calcined nanofibers. The crystallite size increased whereas the specific surface area decreased with an increase in calcination temperature. At higher temperatures, the growth of Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles and simultaneous coalescence of small particles was noted. The highest specific surface area was obtained for the sample calcined at 500 degrees C for 6 h (S-BET = 64.4 m(2) g(-1)). This work opens new opportunities in the synthesis of Fe2TiO5 nanostructures using the electrospinning method and a subsequent optimized calcination process for energy-related applications.

AB - TiO2 under UV light generates charge carriers (electrons and holes) that take part in the process of decomposition of pollutants, which is a well-known fact for the past few decades. For this reason, TiO2 is used for photocatalytic purification water and air. Photoactivity of TiO2 depends on the amount of generated charge carriers, and one part of those carriers are lost through the process of recombination. In order to improve photoactivity, it is necessary to speed up transport of electrons and holes. For better and faster charge carrier transport a unidirectional path is desired, which can be obtained by synthesizing 1D morphology. Anodization of titanium foil is a good way to obtain perpendicular nanotubular morphology onto a substrate. Nanotubular morphology can be optimized via operative conditions of anodization: applied voltage, anodization time and type of electrolyte. In this work, TiO2 nanotube arrays were synthesized by anodization of titanium foil at different voltages: 10 V, 15 V, 20 V and 25 V. Based on FESEM (Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy) micrographs, the microstructure of nanotubes was analysed and data concerning wall thickness, outer diameter of nanotubes and active surface were considered. Also, the influence of nanotube morphology on optical properties was determined. Results of our research show that the increasement in anodization voltage influenced on the appearance of redshift in the absorption spectrum. The sample synthesized at 20 V showed the highest photocatalytic activity due to the optimal nanotube length and nanotube diameter.

AB - Four silver-based coordination polymers, {[Ag(L1)(2)]NO3}(infinity) (1), {[Ag(L1)(2)]ClO4}(infinity) (2), {[Ag(L2)(2)]NO3 center dot H2O}(infinity) (3) and {[Ag(L2)(2)]ClO4}(infinity) (4), were synthesized using the thiomorpholine-4-carbonitrile (L1) and piperazine-1,4-dicarbonitrile (L2) ligands. Compounds 1 and 2 are two-dimensional, while 3 and 4 are three-dimensional. L1 and L2 are 1,4-bis-monodentate ligands in all compounds, while Ag(i) ions are four-coordinated in a slightly distorted tetrahedral geometry. Topological analysis in standard representations suggests that underlying nets in 1 and 2 have an sql topology, while 3 and 4 exhibit a dia topology. Thermal analysis shows that 3 loses crystalline water at room temperature, while other compounds show good thermal stability. All compounds show good photocatalytic activity for photocatalytic degradation of the mordant blue 9 dye, with reaction rates in the range 0.029 to 0.061 min(-1). The best result was obtained for compound 4, which can be correlated to its largest lattice volume.

AB - Nanocrystalline Zn2SnO4/SnO2 powder was obtained by a solid state reaction of ZnO and SnO2 nanopowders mixed in the molar ratio 1:1. The phase composition of the obtained powder was studied by XRD and Raman spectroscopy, morphology and texture were characterized by FESEM, TEM, BET and Hg porosimetry, while XPS and FTIR spectroscopy were used to determine the surface chemistry. The influence of humidity on complex impedance was monitored on bulk samples in the relative humidity (RH) range 30-90% in a climatic chamber in the frequency range 42 Hz- 1 MHz at working temperatures of 25 and 50 degrees C. Change in RH had a significant influence on impedance reduction, especially noticeable in the lower frequency range, indicating potential application of this nanocomposite as a humidity sensing material. Increase in RH led to an increase in AC conductivity that changed with frequency according to the Jonscher power law. The frequency exponent decreased with increase in RH and sample temperature indicating that the correlated hopping barrier model is the dominant conduction mechanism. Complex impedance was analyzed using an equivalent circuit consisting of a parallel resistance and constant phase element, showing the dominant influence of grain boundaries at both working temperatures (25 and 50 degrees C). The resistance decreased, while the capacitance and relaxation frequency increased with increase in RH. At high humidity an added Wartburg element enabled modeling of the charge diffusion process.
