AB - Mechanical activation (MA), as a simple and low-cost method for modifying
physico-chemical properties of disperse systems, is often used for obtaining
powders. Prolonged milling in high-energy mills, necessary for obtaining
nanoparticles, leads to contamination of the starting material, and it can be used as
an additional route for introducing the milling assembly material as the desired
dopant into a powder.
In the present work morphological and structural characteristics of ZnO nanopowders
obtained by MA in a high-energy planetary ball mill with stainless steel
(Fe), Y-stabilized zirconium oxide (Zr) and tungsten carbide (W) vials and balls
were investigated. Knowing that microstructural characteristics of mechanically
milled ZnO powder have strongly depended on milling conditions. The milling has
been performed in a continual regime in air, with following conditions: the rotation
speed of the disk was 400 rpm, ball-to-powder mass ratio was 40:1, and milling time
was 300 min. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy
(SEM), equipped with an EDS, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman and UV-vis
spectroscopy. In order to investigate the type of intrinsic defects and impurities
introduced by milling, both milled and thermally treated milled ZnO were analyzed.
According to the SEM, the particles of various sizes (100–500 nm) were present
in the sample before milling. After milling significant changes in particle shapes and
sizes and very pronounced tendency to adhesion in agglomerates, with dimensions
in the range of submicron up to a few micrometers, has been noticed.\
The phase analysis of both milled and thermally treated milled samples of
powders indicates the presence of wurtzite ZnO refined in P63mc space group [1].
The XRD patterns of milled samples of Fe-, W- and Zr-doped ZnO do not reveal the
presence of other ZnO phases. On other side, in thermally treated milled samples of
W- and Fe-doped ZnO the ZnWO4 (samartinite, P2/c) and cubic spinel (Fd-3m) are
present, respectively. In thermally treated milled Zr-doped sample monoclinic and
tetragonal ZrO2 (P21/c and P42/nmc) are present, whereas ZnZrO3 structures could
not be refined due to very low peak intensities [2].

AB - TiO2 nanopowders were produced by sol-gel technique using TiCl4 as a starting material. For the preparation of crystalline anatase with developed surface area, this aqueous solution has been mixed with 0.05 M or 0.07 M (NH4)(2)SO4 solution in a temperature-controlled bath. The pH values of the suspension were 7, 8 or 9. According to the x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis the anatase crystallite sizes were about 12 nm, which coincided with the average particle size revealed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The Raman scattering measurements have shown the presence of a small amount of highly disordered brookite phase in addition to dominant anatase phase with similar nanostructure in all synthesized powders. BET measurements revealed that all synthesized catalysts were fully mesoporous, except the sample synthesized with 0.07 M (NH4)(2)SO4 at pH=9, which had small amount of micropores. The photocatalytic degradation of herbicide Clomazone was carried out for both the pure active substance and as the commercial product (GAMIT 4-EC) under UV irradiation. The best photocatalytic efficiency was obtained for the catalyst with the largest specific surface area, confirming this parameter as crucial for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of the pure active substance and commercial product of herbicide Clomazone.

AB - In this work, Zn(CH3 COO)(2) 2 H-2 O with AgNO3 content from 0 to 6 mol% was solvothermally treated at 120 C for 18 h in the presence of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone), ethylene glycol and sodium hydroxide. The structural , microstructural and photocatalytic properties of the unmodified and Ag modified ZnO powders have been investigated by the XRPD, FESEM, TEM, UV-vis, Raman and BET techniques. The Ag modified samples consist of ZnO nanocrystals and metallic Ag on the surface. The average crystallite size of all samples was about 20 nm. The FESEM revealed the uniformity in size and approximately spherical shape of ZnO nanopar-ticles. The BET data suggest that all prepared samples are mesoporous. All prepared samples showed higher photocatalytic efficiency in the degradation of the Reactive Orange 16 (RO16) azo dye than the commercial ZnO. In addition, Ag modified ZnO powders, especially those with 1.5 and 0.75 mol% of Ag, were more efficient than the unmodified one.

AB - The titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanopowders were produced by sol-gel technique from tetrabutyl titanate as a precursor, varying the temperature of calcination (from 500 to 550 degrees C with the step of 10 degrees C). XRPD results have shown that all synthesized nanopowders are dominantly in anatase phase. The analysis of the shift and linewidth of the most intensive anatase E-g Raman mode confirmed the XRPD results and added the presence of small amount of highly disordered brookite phase in all samples. The analysis of pore structure from nitrogen sorption experimental data described all samples as mesoporous, with mean pore diameters in the range of 1.5 and 4.5 nm. Nanopowder properties have been related to the photocatalytic activity, tested in degradation of the textile dye (C.I. Reactive Orange 16). The sample calcined at temperature of 510 degrees C showed the best photocatalytic performance.

AB - Two series of nanocrystalline brookite-type powders have been synthesized by using combined sal gel hydrothermal method with titanium tetrachloride (TiCI4) as a precursor and hydrothermal temperature and reaction time varied in the range of 120-200 degrees C and 12-48 h, respectively. The effects of chosen synthesis parameters on structural, morphological and optical properties of synthesized powders have been investigated by the XRPD, SEM, EDS and BET measurements, as well Raman spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry. The XRPD results have shown that pure brookite phase, with mean crystallite size of -33 nm, has been obtained only in the sample synthesized at 200 degrees C, after 24 h of hydrothermal process. In all other samples anatase phase also appears, whereas rutile and sodium titanate phases have been noticed in the samples synthesized at lower temperatures. The presence of different titania phases has also been confirmed and analyzed by Raman scattering measurements. The SEM measurements have shown spindle-like particles in brookite-rich samples synthesized at 200 degrees C, whereas BET measurements have detected mesoporous structure in these samples. The properties of synthesized powders have been correlated to their photocatalytic efficiency, tested in degradation of alprazolam, one of the 5th generation benzodiazepines. The sample consisted of pure brookite has shown the highest efficiency in the photodegradation of alprazolam, practically equal to the activity of Degussa P25.

AB - The effects of common precursors used in the synthesis of CeO2 nanopowders were investigated, and the structural and spectral properties of the resulting products were compared. Two cerium (III) salts, i.e., Ce(NO3)(3)center dot 6H(2)O and CeCl3 center dot 7H(2)O, and two cerium (IV) salts, i.e., Ce (SO4)(2)center dot 4H(2)O and (NH4)(2)Ce(NO3)(6) were applied. The proposed procedures for the CeO2 preparations were realizdd using the same hydrothermal treatment conditions. The products were characterized using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, and the morphology was determined using scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The spectral properties of the obtained nanopowders were characterized by FT-IR, Raman scattering and UV-vis spectroscopy. The results revealed the influence of the precursors on the crystallinity, crystallite size, band gap energy, morphology and purity of the synthesized samples.

AB - Nano- (30-60 nm) and submicron (100-350 nm) ZnO particles were synthesized using solvothermal method at 200 degrees C from an ethanolic solution of zinc acetate dihydrate, applying different reaction conditions, i.e., pH value of precursor and time of the reaction. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-vis diffuse reflectance (DR), Raman spectroscopy, and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy have been employed for characterization of synthesized ZnO powders. It was shown that the structural, morphological, and optical properties are largely determined by reaction conditions during solvothermal synthesis. The particle crystallinity improves with the decrease of pH value and/or the increase of time of the reaction. The Raman and PL spectra analyses indicate that the oxygen interstitials are dominant intrinsic defects in solvothermally synthesized ZnO powders. It was observed that concentration of defects in wurtzite ZnO crystal lattices slightly changes with the variation of pH value of the precursor and time of the solvothermal reaction. The correlation between structural ordering and defect structure of particles and corresponding growth processes was discussed.

AB - The structure and lattice dynamics of mechanically activated BaTiO3 was investigated in this study. Phonon behavior and crystal structure stability of the obtained nanocrystalline BaTiO3 were discussed from the view point of crystallite size effects and microstrains induced by mechanical activation. A systematic study of Raman responses indicates that mechanical activation has a distinct influence on BaTiO3 lattice spectra affecting the intensity, width, and position of Raman modes. The measured Raman spectra were deconvoluted and phonon parameters were estimated. It has been established that applied mechanical activation leads to a significant decrease in the mean crystallites size, but nevertheless enables formation of tetragonal nanocrystalline BaTiO3.

AB - Barium strontium titanate was obtained by hydrothermal treatment of barium strontium titanate citric precursor solution, previously prepared by complex polymerization method. The thermally induced phase evolution was followed at various temperatures up to 800 A degrees C using thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, and Raman spectroscopy. Microstructural characterization of barium strontium titanate powders was performed by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The proposed synthesis route has been proven as a better and faster method for barium strontium titanate powder preparation as compared to the conventional complex polymerization route. The method was found efficient for production of low agglomerated, fine, nanosized barium strontium titanate powder with well defined stoichiometry, and sub-micron particle size. The results of structural and microstructural characterization showed the complete crystallization of carbonate-free barium strontium titanate powder at 700 A degrees C with an average size of crystallites below 50 nm.

AB - Zinc oxide nanopowders were synthesized by the sol-gel method from an ethanol solution of zinc acetate dihydrate. Detailed structural and microstructural investigations were carried out using x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses, as well as high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. The intermediate compound of the reaction was layered zinc hydroxide acetate that further transforms into hexagonally shaped ZnO crystalline nanoplates (d(m) = 4 nm), which aggregate into larger spherical particles. According to the TEM analysis the ZnO nanoparticles were self-assembled into larger particles with the same orientation, i.e. aligned lattice planes of the particles. A further solvothermal treatment resulted in hexagonal, prismatic ZnO mesocrystals.

AB - Zinc oxide ceramics have been prepared from ZnO powders obtained by mechanical
milling for 300 min in air in different high-energy mills. Structural disorder induced in
ZnO powder by mechanical activation (MA) and partial structural ordering observed
after proposed thermal treatment (TT) in ZnO ceramic has been characterized by XRD
and Raman spectroscopy. The influence of defect creating during MA and TT on optical
and electronic properties of ZnO has been analyzed using spectroscopic ellipsometry and
photoluminescence spectroscopy. It was found the strong influence of intrinsic and
extrinsic defects on band-gap widening and change in PL spectra shape and intensity.

intermediate phase in synthesis of barium strontium titanate (BST), has been obtained by
hydrothermal treatment of BST citric precursor solution, previously prepared by
complex polymerization method (CPM). The thermally induced phase evolution from
oxy-carbonate to pure BST was followed using DSC, SEM, X-ray diffraction analysis
and Raman spectroscopy at various temperatures up to 1200°C. The proposed synthesis
route has been proven as a better and faster method for (Ba0.8Sr0.2)2Ti2O5·CO3 powder
preparation as compared to conventional CPM route. The method was found efficient for
production of high purity crystalline BST powders, with small grain size and good
dielectric properties at temperatures T ≥700°C.

AB - Structural disorder of ZnO nanopowders with mean crystallite size down to 15 nm, produced by mechanical activation in high energy mills, has been analyzed by x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The influence of such disorder on optical and electronic properties of activated ZnO nanopowders has been investigated using photoluminescence spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry. A revised interpretation of the resonant enhancement of the first and second order Raman scattering by the E-1(LO) phonons in highly disorder ZnO nanopowders has been proposed. Detailed analysis of resonant Raman effects in ZnO powders under sub band gap excitation has given valuable information about defect induced electronic states in the band gap of ZnO. Systematic trend in the electron-phonon coupling strength, with the correlation length which depends on lattice disorder in ZnO, has been also demonstrated.

AB - Raman scattering spectroscopy has been used for the characterization of zinc oxide nanoparticles obtained by mechanical activation in a high-energy vibro-mill and planetary ball mill. Raman modes observed in spectra of nonactivated sample are assigned to Raman spectra of the ZnO monocrystal, while the spectra of mechanically activated samples point out to the structural and stoichiometric changes, depending on the milling time and the choice of equipment. Observed redshift and peak broadening of the E2(high) and E1 (LO) first-order Raman modes are attributed to increased disorder induced by mechanical milling, followed by the effects of phonon confinement due to correlation length decrease. The additional modes identified in Raman spectra of activated ZnO samples are related to the surface optical phonon modes, due to the intrinsic surface defects and presence of ZrO(2)as extrinsic defects introduced by milling in zirconia vials.

AB - Zinc oxide nanoparticles were obtained by milling in a planetary ball mill with a zirconia milling assembly for up to 5 h in air. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy methods. The deviation of the lattice parameters from single crystal values was related to defect creation and increase of strain inside the hexagonal lattice of milled ZnO nanoparticles. The observed redshift and peak broadening of the major first-order Raman modes were ascribed to the formation of intrinsic defects by mechanical milling combined with the effects of phonon confinement in nanosized powders. To investigate the type of intrinsic defects and impurities introduced during milling, it was necessary to analyze both milled and thermally treated ZnO. After thermal treatment, the intensity of the Raman spectra increased and the peak positions reverted to values similar to those in unmilled ZnO powder, pointing to defect annihilation. XRD patterns of sintered samples confirmed the existence of zirconia impurities and the Rietveld analysis revealed a small amount of zirconium introduced in the ZnO crystal lattice on the Zn sites or interstitial sites. The large influence of those impurities on the micro-Raman spectra of thermally treated samples was observed in this study.

AB - Mechanical activation was used as a method for modification of the structural and optical properties of commercial ZnO powder. For this purpose zinc oxide powder was mechanically treated by grinding in a high-energy vibro-mill in a continual regime in air up to 300 minutes. Starting and modified ZnO samples were characterized using XRD, BET and TEM measurements. Optical properties of these samples were investigated by Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The color of commercial ZnO powder was white while mechanically activated ZnO powder was dark yellow, indicating the presence of nonstoichiometry. In the Raman spectra of non-activated sample Raman modes of bulk ZnO were observed, while the spectra of modified samples point out structural and stoichiometric changes. The PL spectra of modified samples excited by 325 and 442 nm lines of a He-Cd laser show great difference with respect to the spectra of the original sample. This study confirms that change in the defect structure of the ZnO crystal lattice introduced by mechanical activation affects the optical properties of this material.
