AB - The properties of BaCe1-xInxO3-delta (x = 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 0.30, 0.35, and 0.40) as proton conducting electrolyte are examined. The dense electrolyte is formed after sintering at 1300 degrees C for 5 h in air. The samples with In content > 25 mol% contain In2O3 as a secondary phase. The highest total conductivity is around 5x10(-3) S/cm for BaCe0.75In0.25O3-delta in the wet hydrogen atmosphere at 700 degrees C. After exposure to pure CO2 atmosphere at 700 degrees C for 5 h, the concentrations of at least 15 mol% In can completely suppress degradation of the electrolyte. The power density of Ni-BaCe0.75In0.25O3-delta/BaCe0.75In0.25O3-delta/LSCF-BaCe0.75In0.25O3-delta fuel cell tested in wet hydrogen atmosphere reaches 264 mW/cm(2) at 700 degrees C. This result is an indication of stability and functionality of this electrolyte and its versatility in respect to type of fuel and performing environment.

AB - We present the synthesis and photocatalytic properties of mixed-phase TiO2 nanoparticles decorated with silver nanodots obtained by environmental-friendly wet chemical method using low molecular weight chitosan as the silver reducing agent. Structural analysis of synthesized Ag nanoparticles revealed that they crystallized in a rare hexagonal modification. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy study shows that lt 3-nm hexagonal-Ag nanoparticles are implanted on the surface of lt 20-nm anatase grains. Compared to Ag-free TiO2 powders, implantation with Ag results in important increase in visible light absorption. The photocatalytic activity of the samples was measured by monitoring decolorization of concentrated textile dye solution (50 mg L-1 of Reactive Orange 16) under simulated solar irradiation of 280 W m(-2). The optimum photocatalytic properties are achieved with 5 wt% of silver. Based on the collected results, the operating mechanism of the degradation process is suggested, and the effects of the silver addition are explained.

AB - In this study, the possibility to stabilize O-2 ion conductors in Bi2O3-V2O5 system was investigated. Six pseudo-binary Bi2O3-V2O5 mixtures [3.50 lt x(V2O5) lt 8.50 mol%] were thermally treated at 1000 degrees C for 1 h. The samples were characterized by XRD, HRTEM/SAED, DTA and EIS techniques. The high-temperature reaction between alpha Bi2O3 and V2O5 resulted in formation of microcrystalline single-phase specimens containing the phase based on delta-Bi2O3 if V2O5 content was >= 4.63 mol%. The obtained phases exhibited main diffraction peaks corresponding to the simple cubic delta-Bi2O3 (space group Fm-3m) but Rietveld refinement showed a threefold repeat on a simple cubic sublattice indicating that the true unit cell is 3x3x3 supercell. Within proposed supercell, the octahedrally coordinated V5+ ions fully occupy 4a Wyckoff position and partially occupy 32f. The Bi3+ ions are placed at the rest of 32f and at 24e and 48h with full occupation. In total, 22 % of anionic sites are vacant. The ionic conductivity of phase with the lowest dopant content, i.e. Bi103V5O167, amounts 0.283 S cm(-1) at 800 degrees C with the activation energy of 0.64(5) eV, which is comparable to the undoped delta-Bi2O3 known as the fastest ion conductor.

AB - Antimony doped barium-stannate dense ceramic materials were synthesized using spark plasma sintering technique out of mechanically activated precursor powders. The influence of various Sb concentrations (x = 0.00 - 0.10) on properties of BaSn1-xSbxO3 ceramics was investigated. Relative densities of prepared samples were in the range of (79-96) %. TEM analysis revealed the presence of many dislocations in undoped BaSnO3, and their significant reduction upon doping with Sb. All samples except BaSn0.92Sb0.08O3 exhibit non-linear I-U characteristic, typical for semiconductors with potential barrier at grain boundaries. Low angle grain boundaries found only in BaSn0.92Sb0.08O3 caused the loss of potential barrier at grain boundaries which was confirmed by AC impedance spectroscopy measurements. Consequently, BaSn0.92Sb0.08O3 showed the lowest electrical resistivity and linear I-U characteristic. UV-vis analysis confirmed the increasing of band gap (Burstein-Moss shift) values in all doped samples.

AB - Yttrium manganite (YMnO3) is widely investigated multiferroic material with potential use in many technological applications. In this paper, we report on the preparation and characterization of multiferroic hexagonal YMnO3 ceramics obtained by chemical synthesis route. Precursor powders were prepared by the polymerizable complex method from citrate precursors. After calcination at 900 degrees C the powders contained mixture of Y-Mn-O phases which were further sintered at different temperatures. XRD analysis revealed that sintering at 1400 degrees C resulted in the formation of pure hexagonal YMnO3. Density of the obtained ceramics was 96 %TD. The ceramic samples proved to have multiferroic properties - they are antiferromagnetic below 42 K with linear dependence of magnetization as a function of applied magnetic field. The ferroelectric measurements performed at room temperature showed remanent polarization of 0.21 mu C/cm(2) and the coercive field of 6.0 kV/cm for the YMnO3 sample sintered at 1400 degrees C. The magnetization curves measured at 2 and 5 K for the powder samples calcined at 900 degrees C and ceramic samples sintered at 1300 degrees C exhibited a hysteresis loop due to a small concentration of Mn3O4 in the samples.

AB - Bismuth ferrite, BiFeO3, was doped with a wide range of concentrations (0-30%) of Gd in order to investigate structural, ferroelectric, and magnetic properties and their correlation. Powder samples of Bi1-xGdxFeO3 (x = 0.00-0.30) were prepared using the hydro-evaporation synthesis method. Sintering process at 870 degrees C for 6 h of as-prepared, Gd doped BiFeO3 powders resulted in ceramic samples with relative densities in the range of (74-86) %. XRD analysis revealed that Bi1-xGdxFeO3 samples (x = 0.00-0.09) crystallized in rhombohedral phase; Bi1-xGdxFeO3 samples (x = 0.10-0.20) contained both rhombohedral and orthorhombic phases, while Bi1-xGdxFeO3 (x = 0.30) sample contained only the orthorhombic phase. The structural parameters obtained after Rietveld refinement for single-phase Bi1-xGdxFeO3 ceramic samples and microstructure image analysis were correlated with the results of ferroelectric and magnetic measurements. Bi1-xGdxFeO3 (x = 0.0625, 0.075, 0.09) samples showed improved ferroelectric properties and reduced leakage current density in comparison with undoped BiFeO3. Gradual increase in Gd content in BiFeO3 led to enhanced magnetic responses and weak ferromagnetic behavior.

AB - In this work, nine products were prepared by modifying the experimental conditions (6, 12 and 18 hat 110, 135 and 160 degrees C) of hydrothermal treatment of starting nanoanatase in significantly less concentrated alkaline medium than usual in order to obtain a pure titanate phase. The nanocrystalline samples were characterized by XRPD, FESEM, HRTEM/SAED, EDS, TG, FT-IR, UV-Vis and BET analyses. The results revealed that the structure, texture, morphology and band gap energy of samples strongly depend on conditions of hydrothermal treatment. The intensification of hydrothermal treatment significantly increases the solubility of TiO2 promoting the changes in morphology from nearly spherical titania nanoparticles to elongated titanate nanosheets. The single titanate phase was obtained after energetically the most intensive treatment, i.e. 18 hat 160 degrees C. The step-by-step optimization was thus necessary to finally distinguish the titanates from titania in terms of structural and spectral properties and to finally allow the clarification of long-standing confusion between titania and titanates. The obtained single titanate phase was furtherly used to fabricate a humidity sensor, which showed remarkably rapid response and quick recovery time.

AB - Bulk ceramic samples of BiFeO3 were light doped (up to 1%) with Nb5+ in the place of Fe3+ (B-site doping) and their multiferroic properties were investigated using XRD, SEM, polarization (PMTS) and magnetization (SQUID) techniques. It is shown that even the small percentages of doping can notably change electric and magnetic behavior. Electric conductivity differs by two orders of magnitude between samples doped with 0.2% and 1% Nb. The ferroelectric behavior strongly depended on conduction mechanism, and transition from space-charge-limited current (SCLC) conduction to trap-filled limited (TFL) conduction regime reflected on a change in hysteresis patterns, particularly for the samples with 0.2% and 0.5% Nb. Separation of ZFC-FC magnetization curves occurred for all Nb concentrations and increased with Nb doping. Weak ferromagnetic behavior and the increase of remnant magnetization with Nb concentration was observed from the hysteresis measurements. Coercive field changed drastically compared to the pure BiFeO3, namely, the sample with 1% Nb exhibited very high coercive magnetic field of 10 kOe.

AB - BiFeO3 powders were synthesized by sonochemically assisted hydrothermal and hydro-evaporation methods. The X-ray diffraction confirmed the presence of secondary phases, Bi25FeO39 and Bi2Fe4O9, in as prepared BiFeO3 powders. Optimization of sintering conditions indicated that temperature of 800 degrees C and time of 2 h after pressing at 9 t/cm(2) provided ceramics samples with"the highest density (up to 96% of theoretical density) and the lowest content of secondary phases. Ferroelectric and magnetic characterization was performed on two selected ceramics samples with the highest densities. Ceramics obtained from the powder synthesized by the hydrothermal method showed greater lattice distortion along [1 1 1] axis and smaller grains, which resulted in larger values of electric polarization at room temperature. It also exhibited less Fe(3d)-O(2p) orbital overlapping due to a larger Fe-O-Fe bond angle, causing lower antiferromagnetic ordering and weak ferromagnetic behavior at low temperatures.

AB - The chemical synthesis of nickel manganite powder was performed by a complex polymerization method (CPM). The obtained fine nanoscaled powders were uniaxially pressed and sintered at different temperatures: 1000-1200 degrees C for 2 h, and different atmospheres: air and oxygen. The highest density was obtained for the sample sintered at 1200 degrees C in oxygen atmosphere. The energy for direct band gap transition (Eg) calculated from the Tauc plot decreases from 1.51 to 1.40 eV with the increase of the sintering temperature. Indentation experiments were carried out using a three-sided pyramidal (Berkovich) diamond tip, and Young's modulus of elasticity and hardness of NTC (negative temperature coefficient) ceramics at various indentation depths were calculated. The highest hardness (0.754 GPa) and elastic modulus (16.888 GPa) are exhibited by the ceramics sintered at highest temperature in oxygen atmosphere.

AB - In the last decade, the sodium cobaltite ceramic became a promising candidate for potential thermoelectric applications, because of its large thermopower and low resistivity. In this work, polycrystalline samples of NaCo(2-x)CuxO(4) (x = 0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05) were prepared using mechanochemically assisted solid-state reaction method (MASSR) and the citric acid complex method (CAC). Bulk samples were prepared by pressing into disc-shaped pellets and subsequently subjected to a thermal treatment at 880 degrees C in inert argon atmosphere. Changes in structural and microstructural characteristics of the samples, caused by the substitution of Cu for Co, were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. The results of inductively coupled plasma (ICP) analysis showed that the compositions of the final products correspond to gamma-NaCo2O4 and confirmed that desired compound was obtained in both syntheses procedures. The advantages and disadvantages of these two syntheses procedures have been observed and discussed: the CAC method enabled obtaining samples with higher density and fine microstructure compared to the MASSR method, thus better thermoelectric properties. The Cu2+ substitution led to the increase in Seebeck coefficient in both synthesis routes. The highest figure of merit of 0.022 at 300 K was observed for the sample doped with 1 mol% Cu, obtained by the CAC method, and it was almost twice higher than in the undoped sample confirming the significant influence of Cu-doping with even small concentrations.

abstract = "In the last decade, the sodium cobaltite ceramic became a promising candidate for potential thermoelectric applications, because of its large thermopower and low resistivity. The highest figure of merit of 0.022 at 300 K was observed for the sample doped with 1 mol% Cu, obtained by the CAC method, and it was almost twice higher than in the undoped sample confirming the significant influence of Cu-doping with even small concentrations.",

AB - The possibility to stabilize the delta-Bi2O3-type polymorph with high ionic conductivity by doping with Tm2O3 was investigated in this study. Five microaystalline samples were synthesized at 750 degrees C from alpha-Bi2O3 and Tm2O3 mixtures with compositions (Bi1-xTmx)(2)O-3, where x = 0.04, 0.08, 0.11, 0.14 and 0.20. The XRD, SEM, HRTEM and SAED results showed that the targeted delta-Bi2O3-type single-phase (space group Fm (3) over barm) was formed for 0.11 lt = x lt = 0.20. The unit cell parameter of delta-Bi2O3-type phase decreases with increase in Tm content. According to DTA, no phase transitions were observed in the sample with x = 020, indicating that the obtained delta-Bi2O3-type phase is structurally stable from room temperature to 985 degrees C. Based on EIS, (Bi0.80Tm0.20)(2)O-3 exhibits high conductivity (0.117 S cm(-1) at 550 degrees C) with activation energies: 0.38(4) eV above 550 degrees C and 127(2) eV below 550 degrees C, due to the change in charge carrier mobility. The effect of thermal aging was investigated and discussed.
