AB - Magnesium diboride gained significant interest in the materials science community after the discovery of its superconductivity, with an unusually high critical temperature of 39 K. Many aspects of the electronic properties and superconductivity of bulk MgB2 and thin sheets of MgB2 have been determined; however, a single layer of MgB2 has not yet been fully theoretically investigated. Here, we present a detailed study of the structural, electronic, vibrational, and elastic properties of monolayer MgB2, based on ab initio methods. First-principles calculations reveal the importance of reduction of dimensionality on the properties of MgB2 and thoroughly describe the properties of this novel 2D material. The presence of a negative Poisson ratio, higher density of states at the Fermi level, and a good dynamic stability under strain make the MgB2 monolayer a prominent material, both for fundamental research and application studies.

AB - Liquid phase exfoliation followed by Langmuir-Blodgett self-assembly (LBSA) is a promising method for scalable production of thin graphene films for transparent conductor applications. However, monolayer assembly into thin films often induces a high density of defects, resulting in a large sheet resistance that hinders practical use. We introduce UV/ozone as a novel photochemical treatment that reduces sheet resistance of LBSA graphene threefold, while preserving the high optical transparency. The effect of such treatment on our films is opposite to the effect it has on mechanically exfoliated or CVD films, where UV/ozone creates additional defects in the graphene plane, increasing sheet resistance. Raman scattering shows that exposure to UV/ozone reduces the defect density in LBSA graphene, where edges are the dominant defect type. FTIR spectroscopy indicates binding of oxygen to the graphene lattice during exposure to ozone. In addition, work function measurements reveal that the treatment dopes the LBSA film, making it more conductive. Such defect patching paired with doping leads to an accessible way of improving the transparent conductor performance of LBSA graphene, making solutionprocessed thin films a candidate for industrial use.

AB - TiO2 nanopowders were produced by sol-gel technique using TiCl4 as a starting material. For the preparation of crystalline anatase with developed surface area, this aqueous solution has been mixed with 0.05 M or 0.07 M (NH4)(2)SO4 solution in a temperature-controlled bath. The pH values of the suspension were 7, 8 or 9. According to the x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis the anatase crystallite sizes were about 12 nm, which coincided with the average particle size revealed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The Raman scattering measurements have shown the presence of a small amount of highly disordered brookite phase in addition to dominant anatase phase with similar nanostructure in all synthesized powders. BET measurements revealed that all synthesized catalysts were fully mesoporous, except the sample synthesized with 0.07 M (NH4)(2)SO4 at pH=9, which had small amount of micropores. The photocatalytic degradation of herbicide Clomazone was carried out for both the pure active substance and as the commercial product (GAMIT 4-EC) under UV irradiation. The best photocatalytic efficiency was obtained for the catalyst with the largest specific surface area, confirming this parameter as crucial for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of the pure active substance and commercial product of herbicide Clomazone.

AB - We have studied Ho-doped BiFeO3 nanopowders (Bi1-xHoxFeO3, x = 0-0.15), prepared via sol-gel method, in order to analyse the effect of substitution-driven structural transition on dielectric and ferroelectric properties of bismuth ferrite. X-ray diffraction and Raman study demonstrated that an increased Ho concentration (x >= 0.1) has induced gradual phase transition from rhombohedral to orthorhombic phase. The frequency dependent permittivity of Bi1-xHoxFeO3 nanopowders was analysed within a model which incorporates Debye-like dielectric response and dc and ac conductivity contributions based on universal dielectric response. It was shown that influence of leakage current and grain boundary/interface effects on dielectric and ferroelectric properties was substantially reduced in biphasic Bi1-xHoxFeO3 (x > 0.1) samples. The electrical performance of Bi0.85Ho0.15FeO3 sample, for which orthorhombic phase prevailed, was significantly improved and Bi0.85Ho0.15FeO3 has sustained strong applied electric fields (up to 100 kV/cm) without breakdown. Under strong external fields, the polarization exhibited strong frequency dependence. The low-frequency remnant polarization and coercive field of Bi0.85Ho0.15FeO3 were significantly enhanced. It was proposed that defect dipolar polarization substantially contributed to the intrinsic polarization of Bi0.85Ho0.15FeO3 under strong electric fields at low frequencies.

AB - Polycrystalline Bi1-xPr(Ce)(x)FeO3 ceramics (x = 0, 0.03, 0.05 and 0.10) were prepared by auto-combustion method using urea as a fuel. The influence of Pr(Ce) doping on structural, vibrational, morphological, dielectric and ferroelectric properties of BiFeO3 polycrystalline ceramics was investigated. From X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy measurements it was observed that Pr(Ce) doping generated a reduction of the crystallite (grain) size of BiFeO3 and contraction of the rhombohedral cell due to the increased compressive strain. The changes seen in the XRD and Raman spectra of 10% Pr(Ce)doped samples, pointed to a probable appearance of orthorhombic (pseudotetragonal) crystal structure. The pristine BiFeO3 exhibited rounded shape, non-saturated ferroelectric hysteresis loop. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss have shown strong dispersion at lower frequencies, typical for conductive BiFeO3. Dielectric and ferroelectric properties at room temperature were improved with Pr doping. Concerning the Ce-doped samples, only the 3% Ce-doped sample exhibited a better shaped hysteresis loop and improved dielectric properties compared to the pristine BiFeO3. With further increase of Ce content the ferroelectric properties degraded.

AB - TiO2 nanopowders were produced by sol-gel technique using TiCl4 as the starting
material. For the preparation of anatase crystalline, this aqueous solution was the mixed with
0.05 M and 0.07 M (NH4)2SO4 solution in a temperature-controlled bath. PH values of the
solutions were 7, 8 and 9, respectively. Structural, morphological and surface properties of
synthesized TiO2 nanopowders were investigated by XRD, SEM, and BET measurements.
The crystallite sizes determined by XRD measurements had range about 12 nm, and this was
confirmed by SEM. The photocatalytic degradation of the pure active substance and commercial product (GAMIT 4-EC) of herbicide clomazone (0.05 mM) in aqueous
suspensions of synthesized and commercial (Degussa P25) TiO2 were examined under UV
radiation. In all experiments the concentration of the catalyst was 0.50 mg mL-1. BET
measurements revealed that all synthesized catalyst had mesoporous structure, except the
sample synthesized with 0.07 M (NH4)2SO4 and at pH of solution 9 that had small amount of
micropores. This sample had the best photocatalytic properties, even better than commercial
Degussa P25, and the reason of that is rather the biggest porosity than the combination of
micro- and mesoporosity.

Degussa P25, and the reason of that is rather the biggest porosity than the combination of
micro- and mesoporosity.",

AB - The titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanopowders were produced by sol-gel technique from tetrabutyl titanate as a precursor, varying the temperature of calcination (from 500 to 550 degrees C with the step of 10 degrees C). XRPD results have shown that all synthesized nanopowders are dominantly in anatase phase. The analysis of the shift and linewidth of the most intensive anatase E-g Raman mode confirmed the XRPD results and added the presence of small amount of highly disordered brookite phase in all samples. The analysis of pore structure from nitrogen sorption experimental data described all samples as mesoporous, with mean pore diameters in the range of 1.5 and 4.5 nm. Nanopowder properties have been related to the photocatalytic activity, tested in degradation of the textile dye (C.I. Reactive Orange 16). The sample calcined at temperature of 510 degrees C showed the best photocatalytic performance.

AB - Two series of nanocrystalline brookite-type powders have been synthesized by using combined sal gel hydrothermal method with titanium tetrachloride (TiCI4) as a precursor and hydrothermal temperature and reaction time varied in the range of 120-200 degrees C and 12-48 h, respectively. The effects of chosen synthesis parameters on structural, morphological and optical properties of synthesized powders have been investigated by the XRPD, SEM, EDS and BET measurements, as well Raman spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry. The XRPD results have shown that pure brookite phase, with mean crystallite size of -33 nm, has been obtained only in the sample synthesized at 200 degrees C, after 24 h of hydrothermal process. In all other samples anatase phase also appears, whereas rutile and sodium titanate phases have been noticed in the samples synthesized at lower temperatures. The presence of different titania phases has also been confirmed and analyzed by Raman scattering measurements. The SEM measurements have shown spindle-like particles in brookite-rich samples synthesized at 200 degrees C, whereas BET measurements have detected mesoporous structure in these samples. The properties of synthesized powders have been correlated to their photocatalytic efficiency, tested in degradation of alprazolam, one of the 5th generation benzodiazepines. The sample consisted of pure brookite has shown the highest efficiency in the photodegradation of alprazolam, practically equal to the activity of Degussa P25.

AB - The effects of common precursors used in the synthesis of CeO2 nanopowders were investigated, and the structural and spectral properties of the resulting products were compared. Two cerium (III) salts, i.e., Ce(NO3)(3)center dot 6H(2)O and CeCl3 center dot 7H(2)O, and two cerium (IV) salts, i.e., Ce (SO4)(2)center dot 4H(2)O and (NH4)(2)Ce(NO3)(6) were applied. The proposed procedures for the CeO2 preparations were realizdd using the same hydrothermal treatment conditions. The products were characterized using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, and the morphology was determined using scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The spectral properties of the obtained nanopowders were characterized by FT-IR, Raman scattering and UV-vis spectroscopy. The results revealed the influence of the precursors on the crystallinity, crystallite size, band gap energy, morphology and purity of the synthesized samples.

AB - Structural disorder of ZnO nanopowders with mean crystallite size down to 15 nm, produced by mechanical activation in high energy mills, has been analyzed by x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The influence of such disorder on optical and electronic properties of activated ZnO nanopowders has been investigated using photoluminescence spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry. A revised interpretation of the resonant enhancement of the first and second order Raman scattering by the E-1(LO) phonons in highly disorder ZnO nanopowders has been proposed. Detailed analysis of resonant Raman effects in ZnO powders under sub band gap excitation has given valuable information about defect induced electronic states in the band gap of ZnO. Systematic trend in the electron-phonon coupling strength, with the correlation length which depends on lattice disorder in ZnO, has been also demonstrated.
