AB - Multiferroic composites with general formula Ba(Ti0.95Zr0.05)O-3 - Ni0.7Zn0.3Fe2O4, Ba(Ti0.95Zr0.05)O-3 - CoFe2O4, Ba(Ti0.95Zr0.05)O-3 - Ni0.7Cu0.01Sm0.05Zn0.29Fe1.95O4, (BTZr(95-5) - NZF, BTZr(95-5) - CF, BTZr(95-5) - NCuSmZF) were prepared by mixing chemically obtained different types of ferrites and BTZ(95-5) powders in the planetary mill for 24 h. The optimization of sintering process was performed and powders were pressed and sintered at 1300 degrees C for obtained composites samples. From the X-ray analysis for single phase and composites ceramics the formation of crystallized structure of ferrites and barium zirconium titanate can be noticed. SEM analyses indicated the formation of two types nanosized grains, polygonal ferromagnetic and rounded ferroelectric grains. The electrical properties of these materials were investigated using impedance spectroscopy and analysis of ferroelectric measurements. Impedance analysis of all investigated samples has shown different relaxation processes that originated from the grain and grain boundary contributions. The results of polarization vs. electric field measurements have shown the influence of magnetic phase type and its concentration on the ferroelectric properties of the composites. Due to high conductivity of ferrite phases and presence of interfacial polarization, the shapes of these curves differed from the conventional ferroelectric materials.

AB - Over the past decade, magnetoelectric multiferroic materials have been one of the highest priority research topics as they represent new generation of novel multifunctional materials. Multiferroics are characterized by the coexistence of at least two ferroic orders and the presence of ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism, as well as a strong coupling interaction between them (defined as magnetoelectric effect). These properties are essential for new applications in multifunctional devices. This article focuses on various fabrication techniques used for preparation of multiferroic composite ceramics and thin films. The main goals are comparing obtained composite and thin film structures and their properties and acquiring a better understanding of the coupling between magnetic and ferroelectric orders that could surely be very helpful in the design of novel multiferroic materials and hence elucidating their new applications.

AB - Fluorapatite doped with rare-earth elements has a wide-range of biomedical applications. Here, a new type of fluorapatite nanocrystals doped with praseodymium (FAP-Pr) with excitation-emission profiles in visible part of the spectrum is fabricated. Energy levels of Pr3+ activator ion contain metastable multiples states that offer the possibility of efficient multicolor emission lines in FAP nanocrystals. Three types of FAP-Pr nanocrystals with 0.1%, 0.5% and 1% atomic percent of Pr3+ (along with the undoped FAP control sample) are studied. Their novel chemical production method is described, the FAP-Pr nanocrystals structure, biocompatibility and the suitability for cell imaging are analyzed. Physicochemical characterization confirms crystals down to nanometer size. In addition, quantum-chemical calculation predicts that Pr3+ ions are incorporated into the FAP crystal lattice at Ca2 (6 h) sites. In vitro viability results shows that FAP-Pr nanocrystals are nontoxic to live cells. Additionally, the cell uptake of the FAP-Pr nanocrystals is studied using fluorescence-based widefield and confocal microscopy. The nanocrystals show characteristic green emission at 545 nm (P-3(0)-> H-3(5) transition of Pr3+ ion) and orange emission at 600 nm (D-1(2)-> H-3(4)), which we use to discriminate from cell autofluorescence background. Orthogonal projections across 3D confocal stacks show that the nanocrystals are able to enter the cells positioning themselves within the cytoplasm. Overall, the new FAP-Pr nanocrystals are biocompatible and of the tested types, the 0.5% Pr3+ doped nanocrystals show the highest promise as a tracking nanoparticle probe for bioimaging applications.

AB - BaTiO3 nanopowders doped with La and co-doped with La/Mn were prepared by auto-combustion and Pechini methods, respectively. The influence of the synthesis methods, dopants and sintering temperature on the BaTiO3 structure and its potential to be used as humidity and/or H-2 gas sensor were studied. The optimization of all process parameters was performed to obtain adequate microstructure for the development of good sensor properties. The difference in the grain size between the La-doped and La/Mn co-doped samples and the formation of different types of defect structures in these ceramics were found to be significant for the desired electrical and ferroelectric properties. The La-doped ceramics with a pseudo-cubic structure showed the highest potential for gas sensors. The materials obtained by the Pechini method had a tetragonal structure and showed the best response, i.e., the change in electrical resistivity by four orders of magnitude in the humid atmosphere.

AB - Ni-Zn ferrites, with the general formula Ni1-xZnx Fe2O4 (x = 0.0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 1.0), CoFe2O4, BaTiO3 and PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 powders were synthesized by auto-combustion method. The composites were prepared by mixing the appropriate amounts of individual phases, pressing and conventional sintering. X-ray analysis, for individual phase and composites, indicated the formation of crystallized structure of Ni1-xZnx Fe2O4, BaTiO3 and PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 without the presence of secondary phases or any impurities. SEM analyses indicated a formation of uniform grain distribution for ferromagnetic and ferroelectric phases and formation of two types of grains, polygonal and rounded, respectively. Magneto-dielectric effect was exhibited in all samples because of the applied stress occurring due to the piezomagnetic effect and the magnetic field induced the variation of the dielectric constant. For all samples the dielectric constant was higher in applied magnetic field. At the low frequency, the dispersion of dielectric losses appeared, while at the higher frequency the value of tan ffi become constant (Maxwell-Wagner relaxation). Investigation of J-E relation between leakage and electric field revealed that both nickel zinc ferrite and composites have three different regions of conduction: region with ohmic conduction mechanism, region with the trap-controlled space charge limited current mechanism and region with space charge limited current mechanism.

AB - The preparation and properties of thick flexible three-phase composite films based on lead zirconium titanate (PZT) and various ferrites (nickel zinc ferrite (NZF) and cobalt ferrite (CF)) were reported in this study. Properties of three-phase composite films were compared with pure polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and PZT-PVDF films. X-ray diffraction data indicated the formation of well crystallized structure of PZT and NZF/CF phases, without the presence of undesirable phases. Scanning electron micrographs showed that the ceramic particles were dispersed homogeneously in the PVDF matrix and atomic force microscopy confirmed that the size of the particles is around 30 nm. Non-saturated hysteresis loops were evident in all samples due to the presence of highly conductive ferrite phases. Under magnetic field of 10 kOe, composite films exhibited a typical ferromagnetic response. Dielectric properties were investigated in the temperature range from -128 to 250 degrees C and frequency range of 400 Hz-1 MHz. The results showed that the value of dielectric constant of the PVDF/PZT/ferrite composites increased about 25% above the one obtained for pure PVDF.

The results showed that the value of dielectric constant of the PVDF/PZT/ferrite composites increased about 25% above the one obtained for pure PVDF.",

AB - In this paper the fabrication of BaTiO3-based thin film heterostructures with ring silver electrodes by low cost deposition techniques was investigated. BaTiO3, Ba1-xSrxTiO3 (x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4) and BaTi1-xZrxO3 (x = 0.1, 0.2) thin films for potential application in microwave technologies were prepared by chemical solution deposition method on Pt-coated silicon substrates and sintered at different temperatures. The prepared films were examined by SEM, AFM, XRD and Raman spectroscopy in order to study the influence of dopants on microstructure and phase changes. Dielectric and ferroelectric properties of the doped BaTiO3 thin films were also investigated to find the optimal composition and structure for tunable application. Complex shaped silver electrodes suitable for measurements of tunability at GHz frequencies were prepared by inkjet printing method. The electrodes with circular shape were printed on the surface of BaTiO3 based thin films by Dimatix inkjet printer. Precision limits of the method and the influence of printing conditions on electrode size and quality were also investigated.

AB - Comparative study of different PZT-based composite materials ((x)PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 + (1-x)CoFe2O4 and (x) PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 + (1-x)Ni0.7Zn0.3Fe2O4 (x = 0.8 and 0.9)) is presented in the frame of structural, dielectric, ferroelectric and magnetic properties. PZT and NZF/CF powders were synthesized by auto combustion technique. The composites were synthesized by mixing the appropriate amount of individual phases using conventional sintering. XRD data indicated the formation of well crystallized structure of PZT and NZF/CF, without the presence of undesirable phases. SEM micrographs revealed a uniform grain distribution of both, ferroelectric and ferromagnetic phases. Non-saturated hysteresis loops are evident in all samples due to the existence of nonferroelectric ferrite phase. All the samples exhibit typical ferromagnetic hysteresis loop, indicating the presence of the order magnetic structure. Dielectric investigations revealed that ferrites are the main source of charge carriers, which must be of electronic origin. The activation energy of effective electrical resistivity is heavily influenced by the ferroelectric phase.

AB - Di-phase ceramic composites, with general formula xNi(0.7)Zn(0.3)Fe(2)O(4) - (1-x)BaTiO3(x = 0.9, 0.7, 0.5, 0.3, 0.1), were prepared by a mixing method. X-ray analysis, for powder and ceramics, indicated the formation of ferrite and barium titanate phases without the presence of the impurities. SEM analysis indicated that the composite morphology contained two types of grains, polygonal and rounded. Homogeneous microstructure and the smallest grain size were obtained in ceramics with 70% of barium titanate. The electrical properties of these materials were investigated using impedance spectroscopy, dielectric and ferroelectric measurements. The NZF-BT(30-70) composite has shown better electrical properties in comparison to other investigated ceramics, confirmed by dielectric and ferroelectric data analysis. Saturation magnetization and coercive field decreased with the increase of the content of ferroelectric phase.

AB - Multiferroic composite materials based on antimony doped barium titanate/nickel ferrite were prepared by a mixing route. In order to obtain fine grained microstructure composite materials, pure constituent phases were prepared via chemical methods. The optimization of processing parameters has been made in order to reduce the chemical reactions at the interfaces between ferroelectric-ferrite phases. XRD data confirmed the presence of both barium titanate and nickel ferrite phases in the ceramic samples. The resistivity data obtained from impedance as well as calculated activation energies indicated the grain boundary contribution as a more influential effect in the total resistivity of ceramics. Dielectric permittivity enhancement in comparison with composites prepared from pure barium titanate was noticed. Well defined hysteresis loops have shown the changes of properties induced by the modification of the barium titanate phase with Sb doping and due to the co-existence of two different phases in the materials. The comparative study of magnetic properties of obtained composite materials was presented. The results on the magnetodielectric properties are understood in terms of the stress induced variations in the polarization and dielectric permittivity.

AB - The effect of tungsten (W6+) doping on modification of the structure, dielectric, ferroelectric and electrical properties of BaBi(4)Ti(4-x)WxO(15) (BBTWx, x = 0, 0.03, 0.05 and 0.07) was investigated. The ceramic samples were synthesized by the conventional solid state reaction method. XRD data indicated the formation of single-phase layered crystalline structure that confirmed orthorhombic structure type of all compositions with space group A2(1)am. SEM micrographs suggest that the grain size slightly decreases with W doping. The temperature dependent dielectric study revealed that the dielectric constant decreases with W doping while transition temperature slightly increases. Influence of tungsten on relaxor behavior and diffuseness of phase transition is also discussed. Effect of W doping on the dielectric and electrical properties were investigated in terms of ion doping and defect mechanism. The ferroelectric properties were studied by P-E hysteresis loop and it was observed that the remanent polarization increases with a small level of W doping.

AB - Conventional solid-state method was used to prepare powders of pure and barium titanate (BT) doped with different concentration of samarium. Influence of samarium addition on the structure modification, grain growth inhibition and microstructure development was studied. Dielectric properties of doped samples were significantly modified. With doping, a diffuse kind of ferro-para phase transition was induced, phase transitions positions were shifted and dielectric permittivity values were lowered in comparison with pure barium titanate. Detailed impedance and modulus data analysis were presented. The impedance complex plane showed two semicircular arcs for pure BT and one single depressed semicircular arc for all doped ceramics. Different electro-active regions in the modulus plane plots were also distinguish. The comparison between impedance and modulus scaling behavior presented the localized movement of charge carriers in the pure barium titanate and both, short and long range relaxations in the ceramics doped with 0.05 mol% of Sm. P-E hysteresis loops have shown the dilution of ferroelectric properties with Sm doping.

AB - In this doctoral dissertation magneto-electric properties of composite materials consisting of magnetic nickel zinc ferrite phase and ferroelectric barium titanate phase in different mass ratios were investigated. Mass ratios of these phases were differed in order to obtain composite materials with optimal magnetic and electrical properties. Powders of pure starting materials, nickel zinc ferrite and barium titanate were synthesized by the chemical auto-combustion method. This is important technique for the synthesis of composites, alloys, catalyst, etc. In the present time the auto-combustion method is becoming rather popular method for the preparation of nano materials with industrial application in many countries. Powders of nickel ferrite and nickel zinc ferrite were obtained by the calcination of precursors at the temperatures of 1000 °C with duration of 1h, while the calcination of barium titanate was conducted at 900 °C for 24h. Powders of composites were obtained by homogenization of nickel ferrite and nickel zinc ferrite powders with the powder of barium titanate in isopropanol as the milling medium and in the planetary ball mill for 24h. The obtained powders were then pressed and sintered at different temperatures. The sintering process was optimized and the particular sintering temperatures of each composite within the temperature interval of 1120-1200 °C were determined in order to obtain ceramic samples with high density. The characterization of the obtained ceramic composites was performed by different physical-chemical analytical methods. The X-ray diffraction method was used for monitoring the phase composition of obtained powders and ceramics and based on XRD patterns the optimal sintering temperatures were determined. The morphologie of the powders of pure nickel zinc ferrite and barium titanate powders were analyzed based on the analyses of the images obtained by scanning electron microscopy. It was determined that the powder of nickel zinc ferrite is consisted of the individual spherical particles, small in size ( lt 200 nm). The size of the particles of barium titanate powders was approximately 100 nm in size and with spherical shape. The analysis of SEM images of pure nickel zinc ferrite ceramics showed that the sample densities increases with the increase of the zinc concentration, leading to the grain growth and good densification of materials...

AB - Bismuth ferrite is one of the most promising multiferroic materials, and the main barriers for exploiting all of its specific properties are difficulties in obtaining pure, high resistive material with nanosized grains. Doping of BiFeO3 with different transition metals and rare earth elements is often used way for overcoming these obstacles. Yttrium doped bismuth ferrite, Bi1-xYxFeO3 (x = 0; 0.01; 0.03; 0.05; 0.1), was prepared by auto-combustion method. X-ray diffraction patterns and Raman results showed that partial phase transition from rhombohedral to orthorhombic structure took place at around 10 mol% of Y. Effect of Y doping on microstructure was studied from SEM micrographies, showing the reduction of grain size in doped samples. Electrical measurements showed continuous improvement of resistivity with Y doping, whereas the values of saturation and remnant polarizations exhibit maximums at around 5 mol% of Y. Yttrium doping also enhanced magnetic properties, leading to weak ferromagnetism.

AB - Aurivillius Bi5Ti3FeO15 (BTF) and Bi5-xLax Ti3FeO15 (BLTF) ceramics were successfully synthesized by a simple solid state reaction method. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction with no impurity phase identified. SEM micrographs show an evident decrease of grain size of La modified ceramics in comparison with pure BTF. Dielectric properties were investigated in a wide range of temperatures (300-1000 K) and frequencies (1 Hz-1 MHz). The Curie temperature was found to decrease in BLTF when compared to BTF ceramics. An energy bandgap of 1.83 and 1.77 eV for the BTF and BLTF ceramics, respectively was determined from UV-Vis diffuse absorption spectrum. Influence of La doping on ferroelectric and ferromagnetic measurements of both samples was also performed. Very weak ferromagnetism inside BTF can be observed while samples with La content showed complete paramagnetic behavior.

abstract = "Aurivillius Bi5Ti3FeO15 (BTF) and Bi5-xLax Ti3FeO15 (BLTF) ceramics were successfully synthesized by a simple solid state reaction method. Very weak ferromagnetism inside BTF can be observed while samples with La content showed complete paramagnetic behavior.",

AB - As the dc bias flows through a ferrite chip surface mount device (SMD) inductor, it tends to premagnetize the core and reduce its inductance and impedance. It is observed that this drop is especially emphasized when the dc current exceeds the safety limit given by the manufacturer. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate and predict the degree of electrical characteristics degradation as well as the dependence of the core losses on core temperature. In this paper, a measurement technique for the investigation of the influence of dc bias on the electrical characteristics of SMD inductors (i.e., inductance, resistance, Q factor, and real and imaginary part of impedance) for printed circuit board applications is presented. Analysis is based on the model of the SMD inductor, which can be presented as a two-port equivalent circuit with intrinsic and extrinsic parameters. For calculation of the parameters of the SMD inductor, extracted from measured S-parameters using vector network analyzer, the in-house software tool IndCalc was used.

AB - Nickel zinc ferrite (NZF) and barium titanate (BT) were prepared by auto-combustion synthesis as an effective, simple and rapid method. Multiferroic composites with the general formula yNi(1-x)Zn(x)Fe(2)O(4)-(1-y)BT (x=0.3, 0.5, 0.7, y=0.5) were prepared by mixing NZF and BT powders in a liquid medium in the ball mill. The FEG micrographs indicated the primary particle size less than 100 nm for both, barium titanate and nickel zinc ferrite phases. X-ray analysis and Raman spectroscopy indicated the formation of well crystallized structure of NZF and BT phase in the composite powders and ceramics, with a small contribution of the secondary phase. The homogenous phase distribution in obtained composites was also confirmed. Impedance spectroscopy measurements were carried out in order to investigate the electrical resistivity of materials, showing that grain boundaries have greater impact on the total resistivity than grains. Saturation magnetization and remnant magnetization continuously decrease with barium titanate phase increase.

AB - Modified Pechini process was used to prepare nanopowders of barium titanate (BT) co-doped with different concentrations of niobium and manganese. Influence of dopants on the grain growth inhibition and microstructure development was analyzed. The addition of dopants significantly influenced the dielectric properties modification. The obtained epsilon-T curves of all ceramics have the shape of typical ferroelectric material but the increase of dielectric permittivity value and movement of phase transitions with different dopant concentrations were clearly noticed. Grain and grain boundary resistivities for all co-doped ceramics were extracted from detailed impedance analysis and the grain boundary effect was indicated as a dominant effect in the total conduction of the materials. The well-defined and saturated P-E hysteresis loops of the ceramics confirmed the existence of ferroelectric properties.

AB - Perovskite, single multiferroic bismuth ferrite was prepared by two chemical methods: auto-combustion and soft chemical route. Influence of different fuels and complexing agents and thermal treatment on purity of bismuth ferrite powders and density of bismuth ferrite ceramics were investigated. X-ray diffraction technique (XRD) indicated that optimal temperatures and times for calcination and sintering are 600 degrees C for 2 h and 800 degrees C for 1 h with quenching, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis showed that soft route synthesized samples formed softer agglomerates and smaller grains with less secondary phases. Powders and pellets were characterized by Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) specific surface area analysis, particle size distribution, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), dilatometry, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), dielectric and magnetic measurements. Resistivity and origin of electrical resistance were studied by means of impedance measurements.

AB - The processing of ferroelectric BaBi4Ti4O15 (BBT) ceramics from powders prepared by conventional solid state reaction (SSR) and mechanochemical activation (MA) has been investigated. It was shown that MA synthesis reduces the synthesis temperature of BBT powders, leading to smaller particles with reduced anisotropy and consequently to smaller grain size of ceramics. Dielectric properties were investigated in a wide range of temperatures (20-800 degrees C) and frequencies (1.21 kHz to 1 MHz). The relative dielectric permittivity at Curie temperature was higher for solid state obtained ceramics than for the mechanically treated ones. The conductivity of sintered samples was studied, suggesting decreasing of conductivity of BBT-MA in comparison with BBT-SS ceramics. The influence of the grain and the grain boundaries contribution to the dielectric behavior in both ceramics was analyzed through impedance spectroscopy. A well-defined ferroelectric hysteresis loop was obtained for both samples.

AB - Nanosized nickel zinc ferrite powders with general formula Ni1-xZnxFe2O4 (x=0.0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 1.0) were synthesized by an auto-combustion method starting from metal nitrates. X-ray analysis indicated the formation of well crystallized Ni-Zn ferrite phases, and Raman spectroscopy enabled a precise phases identification. The change of the grain size and density with increasing Zn content was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. Magnetization of saturation and remnant magnetization, both, continuously increase up to x=0.3 of Zn, and then decrease for more Zn. The influence of the grain size of investigated systems on the saturation magnetization was studied. Impedance spectroscopy measurements were carried out in order to investigate the electrical resistivity of materials, showing that grain boundaries have greater impact on total resistivity that grains.

abstract = "Nanosized nickel zinc ferrite powders with general formula Ni1-xZnxFe2O4 (x=0.0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 1.0) were synthesized by an auto-combustion method starting from metal nitrates. Impedance spectroscopy measurements were carried out in order to investigate the electrical resistivity of materials, showing that grain boundaries have greater impact on total resistivity that grains.",

AB - Barium titanate nanopowders doped with various concentrations of antimony were synthesized by polymeric precursors method based on modified Pechini process. Obtained powders were pressed and sintered at 1,573 K for 8 h. The temperature dependence of dielectric permittivity pointed on the significant influence of added antimony on dielectric properties of obtained materials. The analysis of impedance spectrum in the temperature range 250-445 K has shown the presence of one semicircle that corresponds to the grain contribution but impedance spectrum at 773 K showed possible overlapping of two semicircles indicating also grain boundary resistivity. The total specific resistivity obtained from impedance analysis showed modest PTCR jump in the heavily doped barium titanate ceramics. The electric field dependence of permittivity of the ceramics was investigated in detail. The experimental data were analyzed using Johnson model.

AB - Bismuth layer-structured ferroelectrics (BLSF), first described by Aurivillius, have attracted much
attention for their application in non-volatile random access memory and high temperature piezoelectric
devices. BaBi4Ti4O15 (BBT) is a well-known member of BLSFs. Considering the grain size affect reduction
of conductivity of most of BLSF compounds [1] this paper dealing with effect of mechanochemical
assisted synthesis method on electrical, dielectric and conductive propefties of BBTcompounds.
BBT was prepared by solid state reaction from mixture of oxides: BaO, Ti02 and BizO: which was
previously milled for 6 h (BBT-MA). The mixture was heated at 850 oCfor 4 h. As a comparison, the same
ceramics were prepared throught conventional solid state reaction (BBT-SS). The same oxides mixture
was homogenized for 24 h in isopropanol and calcinated at 950 oC for 4 h which is 100 oC higher
temperature than for MA procedure. Sintering process was carried out at 1130 oC for t h in both
synthesis methods. Smaller plate like grains are noticed in BBT ceramics prepared from powders obtained
by MA process comparing to SS process (Fig 1.). In the temperature dependence of the dielectric
permittivity, the maximum associated to the Curie temperature was higher and narrower in ceramics
prepared by SS method. Influence of the grain and grain boundaries contribution to the dielectric
behaviour in both ceramics were analyzed through impedance spectroscopy.

AB - This paper describes the sensors were fabricated by ink-jet printing of silver ink on polyimide substrate. In that manner providing a combination of electrical conductivity with mechanical flexibility. When a force is applied at the free end of cantilever beam, three different strain gauges are used to measure flex of the beam. The gauge is taped at the fixed end of the beam, on the top side. To determine the strain, it requires accurate measurement of small resistance change, therefore strain gauge is connected to the Kethley 2400 SourceMeter. This work will consolidate the research on theoretical, technological and experimental aspect of design, development and validation of resistible sensors that are flexible, bendable and stretchable.
