AB - In silviculture, the characteristics of growth of seedlings in relation to light conditions are an important indicator of the success of natural regeneration. The paper shows the growth characteristics of one-year-old Hungarian oak seedlings in full light conditions in a field experiment conducted in 2016 in the nursery of the Faculty of Forestry in Belgrade. Four hundred seedlings were analyzed and classified according to the number of shoot growth flushes into three growth types: one-flush growth, two-flush growth and three-flush growth type. Within the analyzed four hundred seedlings, 39.8% belonged to the one-flush growth type, 58.2% to the two-flush growth type, and only 2.0% of the seedlings to the three-flush growth type. The one-flush growth seedlings have less leaves and lower values of height, root collar diameter and total leaf area, but they are characterized by a higher mean height of the primary axis (the height of the first growth flush), compared to the multi-flush growth seedlings. This is pointing out to different growth characteristics in the initial stage of development and during the growing season between different types of seedlings.

AB - There have been analyzed morho-anatomical characteristics of bald cypress needles from Topcider Park (Belgrade). In order to perform the research, it was chosen 5 test stems and from all of them, 20 needles from branches and 20 needles from the trunk were taken. By descriptive statistic methods, one-factor variance analysis method (ANOVA) and LSD-test, 7 observed elements have been analyzed (needle length, needle width, needle thickness, central cylinder width, central cylinder thickness, mesophyll width and mesophyll thickness). As for anatomical structure of needles, it was related to tissue defining and differentation grade of parenchyma cells as tissues constructive elements. From anatomical point of view, the greatest difference between needles from the branches and from the trunk is related to their maturation grade. All in all, there were established some differences between these two needle types not only from morphological, but also from anatomical point of view.

AB - In the paper, there have been analyzed petioles of the beech collected from ten natural populations in Serbia. Due to performing this research, different morphological and anatomical elements of the petiole have been observed. As for morphological elements, following have been included: petiole length (cm), petiole width (mm), and petiole thickness (mm), while quantitative anatomical elements included width of central cylinder (mm) and thickness of central cylinder (mm). On the other side, based on number, distribution and shape of vascular bundles, anatomical structure of the petiole was followed. Methods of descriptive statistics have been performed in order to determine variability of each element. From anatomical point of view, slight differences have been found between different populations. As for morphological features, petiole length is the least changeable, while petiole width is the most variable. Among quantitative anatomical features, central cylinder length is the least changeable. The vascular structure of petioles and their anatomy could successfully be used as a taxonomic character.

AB - How much of genetic diversity is desirable in mass production of forest reproductive material? How mass production of forest reproductive material reduces genetic diversity? Relation between genetic diversity and mass production of forest reproductive material is discussed in a holistic manner. In industrial forest plantations, narrow genetic diversity is desirable and reproductive material is produced at clone level. On the other hand, in conservation forestry a wide genetic diversity is imperative. Beside management goals, a desirable level of genetic diversity is related to rotation cycle and ontogeny of tree species. Risks of failure are lower in short rotations of fast growing species. In production of slow growing species, managed in long rotations, the reduction of genetic diversity increases the risk of failure due to causes unknown or unexpected at the time of planting. This risk is additionally increased in cases of seed transfer and in conditions of climate change. Every step in production of forest reproductive material, from collection to nursery production, has an effect on genetic diversity mainly by directional selection and should be considered. This review revealed no consistent decrease of genetic diversity during forest reproductive material production and planting.

AB - This paper analyzes the iron (Fe) content of the vegetation at the beginning of the vegetative cycle for the period 2012/2013. Heavy metal content in the vegetative parts of ten plants (eight types of woody plants and two types of herbs) was analyzed in four locations. Iron (Fe) is a biogenic element present in plants in relatively small quantities. However, its ability to produce chelates, as well as being polyvalent, assorts it into a group of elements which have a significant impact on many physiological and biochemical processes. The analysis of iron content in leaves of woody plants and herbs growing in the natural protected area "Kosmaj" has shown that depending on location the iron concentration, in statistical terms, significantly differs and ranges from A to I in locations 1 and 3, whereas its concentration ranges from A to J in locations 2 and 4.

AB - The taxonomic status of beech from the Balkan Peninsula is not yet clearly defined. There is no agreement among different authors about the morphological characteristics discriminating between the Balkan and European and/or Eastern beech. For most characteristics, the mean values are different but the ranges of variation overlap considerably. Provenance trial of beech established in Serbia, at the locality Debeli Lug, has provided an opportunity for research of inter-provenance variability at the level of leaf morphometric characteristics in juvenile development stage. Research included 10 provenances originating from the Western Balkans (Serbian provenance 36 and 38; Croatian provenance 24 and 25; Bosnian provenance 30 and 32) and from Central Europe (German provenance 47 and 49; Austrian provenance 56 and Hungarian provenance 42), where following morphometric characteristics were analyzed: leaf length (Ll), leaf width (Lw), petiole lenght (Pl), leaf base width on 1 cm (Blw), number of veins-left (Vl), number of veins - right (Vr), distance between 3(rd) and 4(th) vein - left (Dv 3-4). The results of this research show existence of clear differentiation among provenances from the Western Balkan and from Central Europe, from the point of leaf dimensions, number of veins and leaf base width.

abstract = "The taxonomic status of beech from the Balkan Peninsula is not yet clearly defined. The results of this research show existence of clear differentiation among provenances from the Western Balkan and from Central Europe, from the point of leaf dimensions, number of veins and leaf base width.",

AB - The research of heavy metals contents (Pb, Mn, Zn, Ni, Fe) in soil in the area of the National Park, Fruska gora", along the highway M21 shows lower values for manganese, zinc and iron than the maximum allowed quantity prescribed by law. For nickel and lead it shows higher values than maximum allowed quantity. The heavy metals contents in leaves of lime tree in 12 analyzed genotypes are far below average values in accordance with ECCE with all genotypes except genotype 7 for lead and genotypes 7 and 8 for iron. The results of analysis of variance components show that out of four components (locality, genotype, locality x genotype and error) only the interaction between locality and genotype does not contribute to variance. The contents of Pb, Mn, Fe and Zn in leaves is primarily influenced by genotype while Ni contents may be considered a consequence of locality. The selection of genotypes which is able to uptake greater quantities of heavy metals than other genotypes may serve as a solid basis for phytoextraction of heavy metals as a technology by which heavy metals, metalloids and radionuclides are extracted from environment through usage of suitable species and plant genotypes able to uptake and accumulate the given pollutants in parts of plant tissue.

AB - The protected natural resource Avala, is a landscape of outstanding features and is located in the territory of the city of Belgrade, the city municipality Vozdovac. To assess the ecological quality of soil on the Avala mountain a research of heavy metals contents (Pb, Ni, Fe, Zn and Mn) was performed at three different locations (location 1, 2 and 3) whereby the sampling was performed on two different depths (0-10 cm and 10-20 cm). As control location one street in the centre of the city with the heaviest traffic (location 4) was chosen. On the basis of the obtained results it can be generally concluded that the soil on Avala is well preserved which is in line with the declaration of the Avala mountain as protected area.

AB - Being the inhabitants of all parts of the environment (water, air, soil) plants can very precisely point to the ecological conditions of the environment. Vascular plants are often used for biomonitoring of heavy metals. The analyses are most often performed on plant leaves. The results of this research clearly indicate that pollution with lead on the locations of Avala (locations 1, 2 and 3), although being of an anthropogenic origin, do not result only from traffic, while on location 4 due to the frequency of traffic, the greatest agent of lead pollution is traffic. The accumulation of heavy metals in plants in higher concentrations indicates the relative increase and pollution spread all over the habitat.

The accumulation of heavy metals in plants in higher concentrations indicates the relative increase and the pollution spread all over the habitat. For comparative analyses of heavy metal contents (Pb, Ni, Zn, Fe and Mn) in leaves, we have chosen four plant species, two woody: Silver lime (Tillia tomentosa Mnch.) and European Black Pine (Pinus nigra Am.) and two herbs: Plantain (Plantago media L.) and Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale Web.). The research was performed on three locations away from the central part of the city of Belgrade and one location in the city centre on soil loaded with heavy metals. The obtained results indicate that herbs are capable of accumulation of higher quantities of Pb, Ni, Zn and Fe in their leaves than woody plants growing in the same habitat. Cluster analysis dendogram clearly shows grouping of woody plants and herbs in two homogenous groups indicating their differences and specific group characteristics concerning the uptake and deposition of heavy metals by plants.

AB - Based on the analysis of the heavy metal content (Zn, Fe, Pb, Cu, Ni, Cr Mn, Cd, As, Hg) in leaves of the trees growing in the urban part of the city of Belgrade, wider city area and rural area it may be noted that the content of Fe, Pb, Ni, Cr and Cd increases going from rural to urban area. The obtained results may be related to the increased air pollution in urban and suburban areas where some of these heavy metals appear as a direct consequence of fuel combustion. The level of tolerance of the species Paulownia elongata S.Y.HU towards air pollution represents the basis for its development and survival in urban conditions as well as setting up of tree alleys and forming wind protection zones along main traffic lines.

abstract = "Based on the analysis of the heavy metal content (Zn, Fe, Pb, Cu, Ni, Cr Mn, Cd, As, Hg) in leaves of the trees growing in the urban part of the city of Belgrade, wider city area and rural area it may be noted that the content of Fe, Pb, Ni, Cr and Cd increases going from rural to urban area. The obtained results may be related to the increased air pollution in urban and suburban areas where some of these heavy metals appear as a direct consequence of fuel combustion. The level of tolerance of the species Paulownia elongata S.Y.HU towards air pollution represents the basis for its development and survival in urban conditions as well as setting up of tree alleys and forming wind protection zones along main traffic lines.",

AB - A comparative study was carried out on the capabilities of the two species Paulownia elongata S. Y. Hu and Paulownia fortunei Hems. as biomonitors of atmospheric (and soil) heavy-metal pollution. Research on content of the heavy metals nickel (Ni) and lead (Pb) in leaves of the species Paulownia elongata growing under urban and suburban conditions with the comparison to the concentration of these elements in leaves of the species Paulownia elongata and Paulownia fortunei on an experimental plot in Bela Crkva showed average nickel concentrations of 2.7 mu g/g on the experimental plot in Bela Crkva, Serbia, twice as low as the concentrations measured under extreme urban conditions (6.62 mu g/g, or 4.54 mu g/g in the immediate vicinity of suburban traffic lines). Inasmuch as Paulownia elongata endures urban conditions well, it can be recommended for cultivation in parks, tree alleys, and wind-protection zones along urban and regional traffic lines.

AB - This paper sums up the results of the research on heavy metals contents (Pb, Ni, Fe, Zn and Mn) in soil and leaves of the plant species, Paulownia elongata S.Y. Hu and Paulownia fortunei Hemsl. at the plantation established on the eutric brown soil in Banat (Vojvodina). The plantation, which served as the control field is at the municipality of Bela Crkva, far away from the main traffic lines. Concentrations of analyzed heavy metals in the leaves of the tree species, Paulownia growing in urban and suburban conditions were compared with the concentration of polluters in the leaves of the tree species, P. elongata and P. fortunei in the experimental field in Bela Crkva.
