AB - We present the synthesis and photocatalytic properties of mixed-phase TiO2 nanoparticles decorated with silver nanodots obtained by environmental-friendly wet chemical method using low molecular weight chitosan as the silver reducing agent. Structural analysis of synthesized Ag nanoparticles revealed that they crystallized in a rare hexagonal modification. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy study shows that lt 3-nm hexagonal-Ag nanoparticles are implanted on the surface of lt 20-nm anatase grains. Compared to Ag-free TiO2 powders, implantation with Ag results in important increase in visible light absorption. The photocatalytic activity of the samples was measured by monitoring decolorization of concentrated textile dye solution (50 mg L-1 of Reactive Orange 16) under simulated solar irradiation of 280 W m(-2). The optimum photocatalytic properties are achieved with 5 wt% of silver. Based on the collected results, the operating mechanism of the degradation process is suggested, and the effects of the silver addition are explained.

AB - Diltiazem is a calcium channel-blocking agent, efficient in treating various heart-related conditions and diseases. It has been used as a cutting agent in cocaine and prevents its common cardiotoxic effects. This paper presents a highly selective molecularly-imprinted sensor to detect diltiazem in buffer and urine. In addition, the possibility of using this sensor as a forensic tool for fingerprinting street-seized cocaine samples of heterogeneous composition was investigated. With thorough optimization of the fabrication process, it was possible to obtain a sensible and reproducible analytical signal via square-wave voltammetry (SWV) as the electroanalytical technique. The obtained analytical parameters for the samples in buffer, pH 7.4, were the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.12 µmol L−1, the limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.41 µmol L−1, and inter-day reproducibility of 2%. For the samples in artificial urine, the analytical parameters were LOD of 0.26 µmol L−1, LOQ of 0.88 µmol L−1, and inter-day reproducibility of 9%. Decent linearity of the analytical signal with the increased concentration of diltiazem in the cocaine street samples suggested a high perspective of the proposed sensor for the forensic laboratory applications, more precisely, the determination of the seized samples' origins.

AB - This paper presents a systematic study on the photocatalytic activity of single-phase BiFeO3 (BFO) nanopowder, under the simulated solar irradiation in the presence of highly polluting textile dye (Mordant Blue 9). BFO nanopowder was synthesized by the means of the ultrasound-assisted sol-gel route. The structural and morphology analyses confirmed phase-pure crystalline BFO nanopowder with particle size of 70 nm. UV-vis spectroscopy measurements have revealed favorably high absorbance of the visible light with the calculated band-gap value of 2.21 eV. Photodegradation process as a function of different pH values of dye aqueous solution (pH = 1, 6.7 and 12) and irradiation time was investigated and the complete degradation mechanism was revealed. Related photodegradation products were detected by high-performance liquid chromatography equipped with mass spectrometer (HPLC/MS-MS). BFO nanoparticles exhibited higher photocatalytic activity in the basic medium than in neutral and acidic medium. HPLC/MS-MS analysis of the solutions at pH = 1 and pH = 6.7 showed only decolorization process, with no detectable degradation products, while at pH = 12 three different degradation products were observed, and their concentration slightly decreased with time. Reusability test showed that BFO nanoparticles can be used in four successive photodegradation cycles, with no significant activity losses.

AB - Cerium-based conversion coatings have emerged as promising green alternatives to the harmful chromium-based ones, but the mechanism of corrosive protection still remains a subject of academic and industrial research. This study focuses at small scale phenomena of corrosion inhibition imparted by ceria (CeO2) to AA7075. Ceria nanoparticles were deposited from diluted and concentrated CeO2 sols by immersion. A multi-analytical approach, combining Atomic Force microscopy (AFM), Scanning Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy, Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectroscopy, open circuit potential and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was employed. Deposition of ceria films led to deactivation of cathodic sites, i.e. decreased Volta potential difference, resulting in increased corrosion inhibition. In situ AFM real-time monitoring revealed that during exposure to NaCl electrolyte, the changes in size of deposited ceria aggregates occurred: nanoparticles disintegrated/desorbed and re-deposited at the coating surface. The process was found to be dynamic in nature. Small particles size and inherent reactivity are believed to accelerate this phenomenon. Due to the greater CeO2 reservoir, this phenomenon was more pronounced with a thicker film, imparting longer term protection.

AB - In this work we present detailed optimization of the titania-based electrospun
nanofibers fabrication procedure. The starting solutions were prepared from
stabilized titanium (IV) isopropoxide and different polymers, such as PCL
(polycaprolactone) and PVP (polyvinylpyrrolidone). We report on the correlation
between the processing parameters and functional properties of as synthesized
fibers. Microstructural analyses performed on SEM and FE-SEM have revealed
branchy morphology of nanofibers uniform in shape and size. Anatase phase in as
prepared and calcined samples was disclosed by in-depth analysis of TEM images
and SAED spectra. The obtained fibers were used in UV/Vis photocatalytic reactor
for degradation of dye-contaminated water solutions. Promising results were
observed showing improved behavior compared to referent samples. Furthermore,
the influence of various dopants on the photocatalytic properties was investigated.

AB - Yttrium manganite (YMnO3) is widely investigated multiferroic material with potential use in many technological applications. In this paper, we report on the preparation and characterization of multiferroic hexagonal YMnO3 ceramics obtained by chemical synthesis route. Precursor powders were prepared by the polymerizable complex method from citrate precursors. After calcination at 900 degrees C the powders contained mixture of Y-Mn-O phases which were further sintered at different temperatures. XRD analysis revealed that sintering at 1400 degrees C resulted in the formation of pure hexagonal YMnO3. Density of the obtained ceramics was 96 %TD. The ceramic samples proved to have multiferroic properties - they are antiferromagnetic below 42 K with linear dependence of magnetization as a function of applied magnetic field. The ferroelectric measurements performed at room temperature showed remanent polarization of 0.21 mu C/cm(2) and the coercive field of 6.0 kV/cm for the YMnO3 sample sintered at 1400 degrees C. The magnetization curves measured at 2 and 5 K for the powder samples calcined at 900 degrees C and ceramic samples sintered at 1300 degrees C exhibited a hysteresis loop due to a small concentration of Mn3O4 in the samples.

abstract = "Yttrium manganite (YMnO3) is widely investigated multiferroic material with potential use in many technological applications. AB - In this work, nine products were prepared by modifying the experimental conditions (6, 12 and 18 hat 110, 135 and 160 degrees C) of hydrothermal treatment of starting nanoanatase in significantly less concentrated alkaline medium than usual in order to obtain a pure titanate phase. The nanocrystalline samples were characterized by XRPD, FESEM, HRTEM/SAED, EDS, TG, FT-IR, UV-Vis and BET analyses. The results revealed that the structure, texture, morphology and band gap energy of samples strongly depend on conditions of hydrothermal treatment. The intensification of hydrothermal treatment significantly increases the solubility of TiO2 promoting the changes in morphology from nearly spherical titania nanoparticles to elongated titanate nanosheets. The single titanate phase was obtained after energetically the most intensive treatment, i.e. 18 hat 160 degrees C. The step-by-step optimization was thus necessary to finally distinguish the titanates from titania in terms of structural and spectral properties and to finally allow the clarification of long-standing confusion between titania and titanates. The obtained single titanate phase was furtherly used to fabricate a humidity sensor, which showed remarkably rapid response and quick recovery time.

AB - Zein, a corn protein, is often used for preparing edible films and coatings. Since zein is insoluble in water, zein films and coatings are usually prepared by spraying or casting its aqueous ethanol solutions to a contact surface (Z(sol) films). However, the use of organic solvents in many food applications is unwanted. In this work, aqueous dispersions of zein nanoparticles were prepared by antisolvent precipitation from 90% v/v aqueous ethanol zein solutions. Zein films were then prepared by casting the dispersions in silicone molds and air-drying at 50 degrees C (Z(dis) films), The obtained films were characterized for morphology, FTIR analysis, mechanical, water barrier and optical properties, and were benchmarked against Z(sol) films. It was found that continuous zein films can be prepared out of aqueous dispersions of zein nanoparticles. Z(dis) films proved to have grainy morphology and higher surface roughness when compared to Z(sol). Surface roughness of Z(dis) films was decreased when plasticizer was added. Water barrier properties of Z(dis) films were found to be comparable to Z(sol) films. No differences in mechanical properties were found between Z(sol) and Z(dis) film. Size of zein particles influenced morphology and optical properties of zein dispersion films.

AB - In order to get a better insight into the relationship between molecular structure and photovoltaic performance, six monoazo dye molecules containing benzoic and cinnamic acid moieties were synthesized and their photovoltaic properties were studied. Three of them have not been previously used in solar cells. Spectroscopic measurements of the investigated compounds coupled with theoretical calculations were performed. Short-circuit current density, open-circuit voltage, and fill-factor were determined. It was found that a larger amount of short-circuit current density will be generated if the HOMO-LUMO energy gap is lower, determined by the stability of the molecule and the electronic effect of the donor moiety. Among both series of synthesized dye molecules, the highest obtained values of short-circuit current density were achieved with (2-hydroxynaphthalene-1-ylazo)benzoic acid and (2-hydroxynaphthalene-1-ylazo)cinnamic acid, and thus they were regarded as promising candidates for application in dye-sensitized solar cells.

AB - Mesoporous TiO2 films with spherical architectures and promising performance in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) were prepared. The morphology of the films was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. Transmission electron microscopy analysis of the spheres disclosed the elongated shape of sub-20nm primary particles, while BET analysis revealed their high surface area of 135 m(2)/g. Anatase presence was observed in the films based on X-ray diffractometry, selected-area electron diffraction analysis and Raman spectroscopy analyses. Increased light scattering of the spheres in visible region was observed by UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy. Photovoltaic performance of the operating N719-sensitized cells was tested using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and current density-voltage (J-V) curves under simulated AMI. 5 spectrum. The 0.25 cm(2) cells exhibited photo-to-electric power efficiency of 4.9%, which is among noteworthy values for DSSCs with similar photoanodic structures.

AB - Lignins and lignin-derived compounds are known to have antibacterial properties. The wound healing agents in the form of dressings produce faster skin repair and decrease pain in patients. In order to create an efficient antimicrobial agent in the form of dressing in the treatment of chronic wounds, a composite hydrogel of bacterial cellulose (BC) and dehydrogenative polymer of coniferyl alcohol (DHP), BC-DHP, was designed. Novel composite showed inhibitory or bactericidal effects against selected pathogenic bacteria, including clinically isolated ones. The highest release rate of DHP was in the first hour, while after 24 h there was still slow release of small amounts of DHP from BC-DHP during 72 h monitoring. High-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass-spectrometry showed that BC-DHP releases DHP oligomers, which are proposed to be antimicrobially active DHP fractions. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy micrographs proved a dose-dependent interaction of DHP with BC, which resulted in a decrease of the pore number and size in the cellulose membrane. The Fourier-transform infrared absorption spectra of the BC-DHP showed that DHP was partly bound to the BC matrix. The swelling and crystallinity degree were dose-dependent. All obtained results confirmed BC-DHP composite as a promising hydrogel for wounds healing.

AB - We have studied Ho-doped BiFeO3 nanopowders (Bi1-xHoxFeO3, x = 0-0.15), prepared via sol-gel method, in order to analyse the effect of substitution-driven structural transition on dielectric and ferroelectric properties of bismuth ferrite. X-ray diffraction and Raman study demonstrated that an increased Ho concentration (x >= 0.1) has induced gradual phase transition from rhombohedral to orthorhombic phase. The frequency dependent permittivity of Bi1-xHoxFeO3 nanopowders was analysed within a model which incorporates Debye-like dielectric response and dc and ac conductivity contributions based on universal dielectric response. It was shown that influence of leakage current and grain boundary/interface effects on dielectric and ferroelectric properties was substantially reduced in biphasic Bi1-xHoxFeO3 (x > 0.1) samples. The electrical performance of Bi0.85Ho0.15FeO3 sample, for which orthorhombic phase prevailed, was significantly improved and Bi0.85Ho0.15FeO3 has sustained strong applied electric fields (up to 100 kV/cm) without breakdown. Under strong external fields, the polarization exhibited strong frequency dependence. The low-frequency remnant polarization and coercive field of Bi0.85Ho0.15FeO3 were significantly enhanced. It was proposed that defect dipolar polarization substantially contributed to the intrinsic polarization of Bi0.85Ho0.15FeO3 under strong electric fields at low frequencies.

AB - The focus of this paper was on the different behaviors in current-voltage measurements of fabricated solar cells due to variations in scan rates (the slowest 10 mV s(-1), medium 50 mV s(-1), and the fastest 100 mV s(-1)). Three different undoped and doped antimony sulfide (Sb2S3)-based hybrids solar cells were examined under standard test conditions (1 sun) as follows: indium tin oxide glass/amorphous Sb2S3-polyaniline/TiO2/polyaniline/electrolyte/aluminum; indium tin oxide glass/p-doped Sb2S3-polyaniline/amorphous Sb2S3-polyaniline/n-doped Sb2S3-polyaniline/polyaniline/electrolyte/aluminum; and indium tin oxide glass/p-doped Sb2S3-polyaniline/aSb(2)S(3)-polyaniline/n-doped Sb2S3-polyaniline/TiO2/polyaniline/electrolyte/aluminum. Different current-voltage curves changing from inverse exponential, linear to exponential ones with different rates of measurement scans at 1 sun were recorded. The obtained results also show basic cell characteristics such as fill factor, short-circuit current, efficiency, series, and shunt resistances. The highest efficiencies of all three cells were obtained at the slowest scan rate, while values of the shunt and series resistances are in agreement with the shape of the curves. On the other hand, one example of measurement at lower light intensity (55% of sun) was given, indicating more stable cell performances and the exponential shape of current-voltage curves at all scan rates.

AB - BiFeO3 powders were synthesized by sonochemically assisted hydrothermal and hydro-evaporation methods. The X-ray diffraction confirmed the presence of secondary phases, Bi25FeO39 and Bi2Fe4O9, in as prepared BiFeO3 powders. Optimization of sintering conditions indicated that temperature of 800 degrees C and time of 2 h after pressing at 9 t/cm(2) provided ceramics samples with"the highest density (up to 96% of theoretical density) and the lowest content of secondary phases. Ferroelectric and magnetic characterization was performed on two selected ceramics samples with the highest densities. Ceramics obtained from the powder synthesized by the hydrothermal method showed greater lattice distortion along [1 1 1] axis and smaller grains, which resulted in larger values of electric polarization at room temperature. It also exhibited less Fe(3d)-O(2p) orbital overlapping due to a larger Fe-O-Fe bond angle, causing lower antiferromagnetic ordering and weak ferromagnetic behavior at low temperatures.

AB - In this paper, we propose a novel method for preparation of high surface area titania nanoparticles, and investigate their photovoltaic performance in dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The precursor compound titanium(IV)-isopropoxide is hydrolyzed in the presence of nonionic surfactant (Triton X100) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid sodium salt (EDTA-Na-2) and thermally transformed into gel. The gel is autoclaved, resulting in submicronic micelles which are further processed into mesoporous films. The films are deposited from paste, composed of ultrasonically broken micelles and the organic ingredients. The crack-free film structures, composed of sub-25 nm pure anatase particles are observed using the appropriate instrumental techniques: scanning electron microscopy (SEM), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy. The large surface area of 158 m(2) g (1) and mesoporosity are confirmed using the data obtained from the nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm. The photovoltaic performance of the operating N719-sensitized solar devices are tested using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), open-circuit voltage decay (OCVD) and by recording current density-voltage (J-V) curves. The cell exhibits promising photocurrent density up to 11.7 mA cm (2), and the photo-to-electric power efficiency of 5.22%, for cell area of 0.24 cm(2), under 100 mW cm (2) halogen light source.

AB - Polycrystalline Bi1-xPr(Ce)(x)FeO3 ceramics (x = 0, 0.03, 0.05 and 0.10) were prepared by auto-combustion method using urea as a fuel. The influence of Pr(Ce) doping on structural, vibrational, morphological, dielectric and ferroelectric properties of BiFeO3 polycrystalline ceramics was investigated. From X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy measurements it was observed that Pr(Ce) doping generated a reduction of the crystallite (grain) size of BiFeO3 and contraction of the rhombohedral cell due to the increased compressive strain. The changes seen in the XRD and Raman spectra of 10% Pr(Ce)doped samples, pointed to a probable appearance of orthorhombic (pseudotetragonal) crystal structure. The pristine BiFeO3 exhibited rounded shape, non-saturated ferroelectric hysteresis loop. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss have shown strong dispersion at lower frequencies, typical for conductive BiFeO3. Dielectric and ferroelectric properties at room temperature were improved with Pr doping. Concerning the Ce-doped samples, only the 3% Ce-doped sample exhibited a better shaped hysteresis loop and improved dielectric properties compared to the pristine BiFeO3. With further increase of Ce content the ferroelectric properties degraded.

AB - Thick films using starting nanopowders of TiO2 (anatase 99.7%) and alpha-Fe2O3 (hematite) mixed in the weight ratios 60:40 and 40:60 for thick film paste were fabricated by screen printing technology on an alumina substrate. Samples were sintered at temperatures of 800-950 degrees C for 60 min. Structural and electronic properties were analyzed by XRD and SEM analysis, UV/vis spectroscopy and current voltage analysis in view of potential application as gas sensors and anodes in photoelectrochemical cells for hydrogen generation and water splitting. XRD analysis showed that at 800 degrees C monoclinic pseudobrookite formed and anatase had transformed into rutile. Increase in sintering temperature lead to a gradual transformation of monoclinic pseudobrookite into the orthorhombic phase. SEM analysis showed that a homogenous small grain structure was obtained especially in the case of thick film samples with the 40:60 ratio of starting anatase and hematite sintered at 850 degrees C.

AB - Four novel polymeric iron(III) complexes with 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy) and different aromatic polycarboxylato ligands as anions of phthalic (pht), isophthalic (ipht), terephthalic (tpht) and pyromellitic (pyr) acid were synthesized by ligand exchange reaction. The complexes were characterized by elemental and TG/DSC analysis, FTIR and diffuse reflectance UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Based on the analytical and spectral data, the formulae of the complexes were {[Fe-4(bipy)(2) (H2O)(2)(OH)(6)(pht)(3)]center dot 2H(2)O}(n) (1), {[Fe-4(bipy)(2)(Hipht)(2)(ipht)(2)(OH)(6)]center dot 4H(2)O}(n) (2), {[Fe-4(bipy)(2)(Htpht)(2)(OH)(6)(tpht)(2)]center dot 4H(2)O}(n) (3) and {[Fe-4(bipy)(H2O)(8)-(OH)(4)(pyr)(2)]center dot H2O}(n) (4). All complexes were red brown and low-spin with a distorted octahedral geometry with FeO6 or FeN2O4 chromophores. The polycarboxylato ligands played a bridging role in all cases, whereas monodentate COO groups were present in 2 and 3, while bridging and chelate COO groups were established in 1 and 4. The thermal behaviours of 1-4 were investigated in detail and the molar dehydration enthalpies were calculated. According to the all those results, the structural formulae of complexes 1-4 were proposed.

AB - Processing of the YMn2O5 powder is very challenging, since it decomposes to YMnO3 and Mn3O4 at temperatures close to 1180 degrees C, while samples consolidation commonly demands high temperatures. The main goal of this work is to investigate a possibility to prepare thick films of YMn2O5, since their deposition generally requires significantly lower temperatures. Multiferroic YMn2O5 was synthesized by the hydrothermal method from Y(CH3COO)(3) center dot xH(2)O, Mn(CH3COO)(2) center dot 4H(2)O and KMnO4 precursors. XRD, FE-SEM and TEM analysis showed that the obtained powder was monophasic, with orthorhombic crystal structure and columnar particle shape with mean diameter and length of around 20 and 50 nm, respectively. The obtained powder was suspended in isopropyl alcohol with addition of appropriate binder and deflocculant. This suspension was used for electrophoretic deposition of YMn2O5 thick films under the high-voltage conditions and electric fields ranging from 250 to 2125 V/cm. The films obtained at 1000 V/cm and higher electric fields showed good adhesion, particle packing, homogeneity and very low porosity. It was shown that the deposition in extremely high electric fields (K-C=2125 V/cm) can influence the crystal orientation of the films, resulting in formation of preferentially oriented films.

AB - Titanium(IV) oxide in the form of anatase has proven to be the best choice for photoanodic material in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). The aim of the work was to study the influence of binder molecular weight on the morphology of deposited films, and consequently, DSC parameters. For this study, five different TiO2 tape casting slips were prepared from commercially available nanoanatase powder and polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a binder. The process of drying and sintering was carefully designed, so that the organic template was slowly decomposed, leaving favorable crack-free, porous structure. It was found that there is an optimal region of binder molecular weight for obtaining homogeneous, non-agglomerated and porous microstructure which is a necessary condition for application of TiO2 films in DSCs.
