AB - To investigate the influence of spinel structure and sintering temperature on the functional properties of BaTiO3/NixZn1−xFe2O4 (x = 0, 0.5, 1), NiFe2O4, ZnFe2O4, and Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 were in situ prepared by thermal decomposition onto BaTiO3 surface from acetylacetonate precursors. As-prepared powders were additionally sintered at 1150 °C and 1300 °C. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used for the detailed examination of phase composition and morphology. The magnetic, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties were investigated. The optimal phase composition in the BaTiO3/NiFe2O4 composite, sintered at 1150 °C, resulted in a wide frequency range stability. Additionally, particular phase composition indicates favorable properties such as low conductivity and ideal-like hysteresis loop behavior. The favorable properties of BaTiO3/NiFe2O4 make this particular composite an ideal material choice for further studies on applications of multi-ferroic devices.

AB - Samarium and zirconium-doped TiO2 nanofibers (3 and 5 wt.%) were synthesised by a
simple modified electrospinning method. The effects of calcination temperature on the size
of the as-spun doped titania fibers was investigated. As-spun nanofibers were studied and
characterized through thermal gravimetric analysis (TG-DTA), Fourier Transform Infrared
Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while the structure and
morphology of calcined fibers was studied by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Field Emission
Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and spectroscopic techniques (FT-IR and DRS UV-vis). The
influence of dopant type and amount on the photocatalytic degradation of Methylene blue
(MB) was investigated.

AB - Nanocrystalline Zn2SnO4/SnO2 powder was obtained by a solid state reaction of ZnO and SnO2 nanopowders mixed in the molar ratio 1:1. The phase composition of the obtained powder was studied by XRD and Raman spectroscopy, morphology and texture were characterized by FESEM, TEM, BET and Hg porosimetry, while XPS and FTIR spectroscopy were used to determine the surface chemistry. The influence of humidity on complex impedance was monitored on bulk samples in the relative humidity (RH) range 30-90% in a climatic chamber in the frequency range 42 Hz- 1 MHz at working temperatures of 25 and 50 degrees C. Change in RH had a significant influence on impedance reduction, especially noticeable in the lower frequency range, indicating potential application of this nanocomposite as a humidity sensing material. Increase in RH led to an increase in AC conductivity that changed with frequency according to the Jonscher power law. The frequency exponent decreased with increase in RH and sample temperature indicating that the correlated hopping barrier model is the dominant conduction mechanism. Complex impedance was analyzed using an equivalent circuit consisting of a parallel resistance and constant phase element, showing the dominant influence of grain boundaries at both working temperatures (25 and 50 degrees C). The resistance decreased, while the capacitance and relaxation frequency increased with increase in RH. At high humidity an added Wartburg element enabled modeling of the charge diffusion process.

AB - Zinc ferrite nanocrystalline powder was obtained by solid state synthesis of starting zinc oxide and hematite nanopowders. Field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the formation of nanocrystalline zinc-ferrite powder with a mixed spinel structure with small amounts of remaining zinc oxide and hematite as impurities. Thick film paste was formed and screen printed on test interdigitated PdAg electrodes on alumina substrate. Formation of a porous nanocrystalline structure was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and Hg porosimetry. Humidity sensing properties of zinc ferrite thick films were investigated by monitoring the change in impedance in the relative humidity interval 30%-90% in the frequency range 42 Hz-1 MHz at room temperature (25 degrees C) and 50 degrees C. At 42 Hz at both analyzed temperatures the impedance reduced 46 times in the humidity range 30%-90%. The dominant influence of grain boundaries was confirmed by analysis of complex impedance with an equivalent circuit.

AB - Titanium dioxide is a photocatalyst, known not only for its ability to oxidize organic contaminants, but also for its antimicrobial properties. In this article, significant enhancement of the antimicrobial activity of TiO2 (up to 32 times) was demonstrated after its activation by ball milling. The antimicrobial activity was analyzed for one fungal and 13 bacterial ATCC strains using the microdilution method and recording the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values. In order to further investigate the correlation between the mechanical activation of TiO2 and its antimicrobial activity, the structure, morphology and phase composition of the material were studied by means of Electron Microscopy, X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements. UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra were recorded and the Kubelka-Munk function was applied to convert reflectance into the equivalent band gap energy (E-g) and, consequently, to investigate changes in the E-g value. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to analyze the influence of mechanical activation on the Ti 2p and O 1s spectra. The presented results are expected to enable the development of more sustainable and effective advanced TiO2-based materials with antimicrobial properties that could be used in numerous green technology applications.

AB - Pseudobrookite based nanopowder was obtained by solid state synthesis of starting hematite and anatase nanopowders in the weight ratio 55:45. Structural and morphological properties were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, UV/Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirming the formation of nanocrystalline pseudobrookite. The obtained powder was mixed with a binder (ethyl cellulose), dispersant (α-terpinol) and adhesion agents (acetic acid and distilled water) to obtain a thick film paste. It was screen printed on alumina substrate with interdigitated PdAg electrodes and fired at 600 °C for 30 min. Formation of a porous nanocrystalline thick film structure was shown using Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while Hall measurements enabled determination of carrier mobility. Change of impedance response in the frequency range 42 Hz–1 MHz with humidity was analyzed at room temperature (25 °C) and 50 °C in the relative humidity range 30–90% and 40–90%, respectively. At 42 Hz, and room temperature the impedance reduced ∼28 times, while at 50 °C it reduced ∼147 times in the relative humidity range 40–90%. The sensor showed rapid response (16 s) and relatively low hysteresis (8.39% at 25 °C and 2.64% at 50 °C) showing that this is a promising material for application in humidity sensing.

AB - During the compaction of the powder mixture of ZnO and Mn2O3 (MnCO3) and Fe2O3 compacts were find fragile for further handling. Poly vinyl alcohol PVA was used as a binder in an unusual 20% PVA content. We made as well 2% PVA with 0.6% Poly ethylene glycol PEG and 20% PVA with 6 % PEG. Binder was wrapped over the powder by suspension forming in the polymer water solution and drying afterwards until all water content evaporates. On the these obtained powders employed characterization techniques were: Fourier transformed Infra red FTIR spectra with ATR attenuated total reflection technique as well as differential thermal analysis DTA on the device with low temperature sensitivity and TEM transmition electron microscopy. All binder concentrations gave compacts with good mechanical properties, that can be handled with ease but with adding, a PEG as plasticizer the operating of the anvil and piston were extremely difficult due to friction.

AB - One-dimensional (1D) TiO2 nanotubes perpendicular to the substrate were obtained by electrochemical oxidation of titanium foil in an acid electrolyte. In order to alter the crystallinity and the morphology of films the as-anodized amorphous TiO2 nanotube films were sintered at elevated temperatures. The evolution of the morphology was visualized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while the crystalline structure was investigated by Xray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The chemical composition was studied by Xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The effects of crystallinity and morphology of TiO2 nanotube (NTs) films on photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) in an aqueous solution under UV light irradiation were also investigated. The TiO2 nanotubes sintered at 650 degrees C for 30 min had the highest degree of crystallinity and exhibited the best photocatalytic activity among the studied TiO2 nanotube films.

AB - Dilatometry is defined as the dimensional change of a solid specimen recorded during temperature schedule. Set of data obtained in such a manner are known as dilatogram. Dilatograms for different sort of materials represent an important trace for deduction of other materials properties than volume. Property parameters directly appointable from the dilatogram graph are: thermal expansion coefficient for the temperature interval, glass transition temperature, phasetransition temperature, sintering shrinkage and sintering temperature for maximal shrinkage rate, crystallization point temperature for amorphous bulk metallic glasses, defect annealing temperature. From dilatometric data we can also calculate more complex values such as the sintering activation energy, deduce sintering kinetic mechanisms, for the phase transition kinetic parameters and phase composition, defect concentration, materials thermal expansion coefficient at a particular temperature, solid state reaction kinetic parameters. Dilatometric devices regarding the construction are divided into contact and non contact ones, for they physically exert force on the specimen or not. Furthermore, contact dilatometric devices can be ascribed due to their construction as vertical and horizontal. This categorization leads to different and changeable contact force on the specimen. Vertical dilatometers usually use higher and temporarily changeable forces applied on the specimen. They can be, with suitable equipment, used for other mechanical properties determination than expansion, such as compressibility, tension or inflection. Non contact devices are divided into interferometric and optical. Interferometric ones use a two laser beams construction where for the length change measuring they count the number of wave lengths that are formed as a path difference between two beams. Optical devices, however, uses monochromatic light projected on the specimen that forms shadow recorded on an optical sensor. Obtained images are then analyzed for the specimen`s dimensional change.

AB - Commercial Mn-Zn powder (Mn0.63Zn0.37Fe2O4, 93 wt. % and Fe2O3 7 wt. %) was milled 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 hours in a planetary ball mill. The goal was to observe intensive milling influences on oxidation and reduction processes that will happen during subsequent heating. Powders were characterized with XRD, SEM and particle seizer. Subsequent heating was monitored on TGA/DTA in an air atmosphere. After compaction of the milled powders, sintering was also performed in a dilatometric device. Sintered specimens were characterized micro structurally with SEM on a fresh breakage. Obtained differential TGA diagrams suggest intensive changes during prolonged milling of the oxidation kinetics on heating. Ferrite powders changed with milling as well as with second run heating were characterized to enable determination of the potentially best ratio of milling and heating to be applied to obtain the desired microstructure.

AB - In this work we have investigated changes in dielectric properties, electrical conductivity and complex impedance of Fe2TiO5 nanopowder compacts and bulk samples as a function of elevated temperature (room to 423 K compacts, to 443 K bulk samples), frequency (100 Hz-1 MHz) and composition (starting molar ratio of Fe2O3 and TiO2 1:1-PSB11 and 1:1.5-PSB115). XRD, SEM and TEM analysis of PSB11 and PSB115 powders obtained by a simple solid state process from starting hematite and anatase nanopowders confirmed the formation of nanostructured orthorhombic pseudobrookite with small amounts of excess hematite and rutile. The dielectric constant decreased with frequency and temperature for both compacts and bulk samples. Higher values were determined for bulk samples also reflecting the influence of sample composition. Change in the dielectric loss also reflected the influence of sample composition showing one maximum at high frequencies for compacts, and two maxima at room temperature for bulk samples. Complex impedance was analyzed using equivalent circuits and showed in the case of compacts the influence of both grain and grain boundary components, while in the case of bulk samples the dominant influence of grain boundaries. The temperature dependence of the determined grain and grain boundary resistance for compacts and grain boundary resistance for bulk samples was analyzed using the adiabatic small polaron hopping model enabling determination of activation energies for conduction, while the temperature dependence of relaxation times enabled determination of activation energies for relaxation. Changes in electrical conductivity for compacts and bulk samples followed Jonscher's power law. The change of the determined frequency constant with temperature showed that at elevated temperatures the quantum mechanical-tunneling model for the case of small polaron hopping explains the conduction mechanism occurring in both compacts and bulk samples.

AB - The structure and lattice dynamics of mechanically activated BaTiO3 was investigated in this study. Phonon behavior and crystal structure stability of the obtained nanocrystalline BaTiO3 were discussed from the view point of crystallite size effects and microstrains induced by mechanical activation. A systematic study of Raman responses indicates that mechanical activation has a distinct influence on BaTiO3 lattice spectra affecting the intensity, width, and position of Raman modes. The measured Raman spectra were deconvoluted and phonon parameters were estimated. It has been established that applied mechanical activation leads to a significant decrease in the mean crystallites size, but nevertheless enables formation of tetragonal nanocrystalline BaTiO3.

AB - In this work we have analyzed the effects of Ti doping on structural and electrical properties of alpha-Fe2O3. When the amount of added Ti (5 wt.% TiO2) was within the solubility degree and XRD, SEM and EDS analysis revealed a homogenous hematite structure, with lattice parameters a= 5.03719(3), c= 13.7484(1) slightly increased due to incorporation of Ti into the rhombohedral hematite lattice. Higher amounts of Ti (10 wt.% TiO2) resulted in the formation of pseudobrookite, besides hematite, confirmed by SEM and EDS analysis. Studies of electric properties in the temperature range 25-225oC at different frequencies (100-1Mz) showed that Ti doping improved electrical conductivity. Impedance analysis was performed using an equivalent circuit, showing one relaxation process and suggesting dominant grain boundary contribution.

AB - The effects of Zn-doping on the dielectric behavior and electrical properties of bulk alpha-Fe2O3 have been studied. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the presence of two phases in all samples: hematite and spinel ZnFe2O4, with the amount of spinel phase increasing with increasing Zn content. Scanning electron microscopy analysis combined with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy showed that the Zn-bearing phase occurred in the form of individual spinel ZnFe2O4 grains in a hematite matrix. DC conductivity was measured in the temperature range 25-225°C (298-498 K). Impedance spectroscopy measurements in the same temperature range were carried out in the frequency range 100Hz to 10 MHz. Increase in the Zn content resulted in increased electrical conductivity and higher values of the dielectric constant. The resistance and capacitance of grains and grain boundaries were analyzed by modeling the experimental results using an equivalent circuit.

AB - Mixtures of BaCO3, ZnO and TiO2 powders, with molar ratio of 1:2:4, were mechanically activated for 20, 40 and minutes in a planetary ball mill. The resulting powders were compacted into pellets and isothermally sintered at 1250 degrees C for 2h with a heating rate of 10 degrees C/min. X-ray diffraction analysis of obtained powders and sintered samples was performed in order to investigate changes of the phase composition. The microstructure of sintered samples was examined by scanning electron microscopy. The photoacoustic phase and amplitude spectra of sintered samples were measured as a function of the laser beam modulating frequency using a transmission detection configuration. Fitting of experimental data enabled determination of photoacoustic properties including thermal diffusivity. Based on the results obtained correlation between thermal diffusivity and experimental conditions, as well the samples microstructure characteristics, was discussed.

DC conductivity was measured in the temperature range 25-225 degrees C (298-498 K).

AB - Due to its outstanding electrical characteristics, such as the low temperature expansion coefficient, low dielectric constant and good mechanical properties, cordierite, 2MgO center dot 2Al(2)O(3)center dot 5SiO(2), is a very attractive high-temperature ceramic material. In order to accelerate the process of sintering, 2.50 mass% Bi2O3 has been added to the starting mixtures. Liquid phase sintering caused by the presence of bismuth-oxide lowers the temperature of cordierite formation. The mechanical activation of the starting mixtures (0-56 min in vibro-mill) additionally lowers sintering temperatures. The sintering process was performed at 1200, 1300, 1350 and 1400 degrees C, for 2 h. The particle size analysis (PSA) was employed in order to determine the changes in the particle size of the mechanically treated powders. The phase composition of the starting powders and sintered materials was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction method. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used in the analysis of the powder morphology.

AB - The powder injection moulding (PIM) technology is lately becoming more and more significant due to complex design possibilities and good repeatability. This technology requires optimization of all steps starting with material and binder, injection, debinding and sintering parameters. Sintering is one of the key links in this technology. The powder injection moulding process is specific as during feedstock injection powder particles mixed into the binder do not come into mechanical contact. Shrinkage during sintering of PIM samples is high. In this work we have analyzed and modeled the sintering process of isotropic PIM samples of Sr-hexaferrite. The Master Sintering Curve (MSC) principle has been applied to analyze sintering of two types of PIM Sr-hexaferrite samples with completely removed binder and only the extraction step of the debinding procedure (thermal debinding proceeding simultaneously with sintering). Influence of the heating rate on resulting sample microstructures has also been analyzed. Influence of the sintering time and temperature was analyzed using three different phenomenological equations.

AB - Impedance/admittance and dielectric spectroscopy were used to investigate the effect of temperature on the electrical response of liquid-phase sintered Zn2SnO4-SnO2 ceramics. The measurements were performed over a wide frequency range (100 Hz to 10 MHz) at different temperatures. The real and the imaginary part of the complex impedance traced semicircles in the complex plane. The resistance and the capacitance of bulk and grain-boundary regions were determined by modeling the experimental results using several equivalent circuits taking into account bulk deep trap states. Admittance complex diagrams were also determined in order to understand better the conduction mechanisms occurring in the polycrystalline Zn2SnO4-SnO2 system.

AB - In this article the solid state reaction of BaTiO3 formation from a mechanically activated BaCO3-TiO2 system has been investigated. An equimolar mixture of BaCO3 and TiO2 powders was activated in a planetary ball mill in a continual regime for 0, 30 and 90 min, pressed and thermally treated up to 1200 degrees C. The eject of the milling and firing regime on the phase formation was investigated by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) method and differential thermal analysis (DTA). Deconvolution of the experimental DTA curve corresponding to the BaTiO3 synthesis process has been performed. The influence of the activation time on the change of characteristic temperature for each elementary step in the complete solid-state reaction of BaTiO3 formation, was analyzed. These results were correlated with the ones obtained by SEM characterization and by XRD analysis.

AB - Powder mixtures of zinc oxide and tin oxide in the molar ratio, ZnO:SnO2 = 2: 1, were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill in the time intervals of 0-160 min. The adsorption-desorption isotherms, specific surface area, pore volume and pore size distribution spectra of mechanically activated powder mixtures were established by N-2 adsorption at 77 K. Microstructure analysis was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and digital pattern recognition (DPR) microstructure quantity analysis. The phase composition of the mixed powders was determined by Xray analysis. Mechanochemical activation of the ZnO-SnO2 system resulted in fine grinding of the starting particles and generation of contacts between them, mass transfer at contacts zones and formation of Zn2SnO4 spinel, which was observed after 40 min of activation.

Fotoakustični (FA) fazni i amplitudski spektri sinterovanih uzoraka snimljeni su u funkciji čopovane frekvencije upotrebljenog laserskog zračenja (crveni laser snage 25 mW, λ = 632 nm) u toplotno-transmisionoj konfiguraciji. Teorijska analiza eksperimentalnih rezultata FA merenja na osnovu Rosencwaig-Gersho termalno-klipnog modela omogućila je izračunavanje toplotne difuzivnosti, D T (m2s-1), difuzionog koeficijenta manjinskih slobodnih nosilaca, D (m2s-1) i optičkog apsorpcionog koeficijenta (m-1).
AB - In this paper the changes that occurred in differently activated ZnO-SnO2 and sintered samples were investigated using photoacoustic spectroscopy. ZnO and SnO2 powders, mixed in the molar ratio 2:1, were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill for 10-160 min. The mixtures were pressed and isothermally sintered at 1300 °C for two hours. X-ray diffraction analysis of the obtained sintered samples was performed in order to investigate changes of the phase composition and confirmed only the presence of a pure zinc stannate (Zn2SnO4) phase in all the sintered samples as a result of the solid state reaction and reaction sintering between the starting ZnO and SnO2 powders. The microstructure of the sintered samples was examined by scanning electron microscopy and showed that mechanical activation leads to the formation of a structure with reduced particle size which accelerates spinel formation. Grain growth of the spinel phase slows down the densification process and together with the agglomerates formed during mechanical activation causes the appearance of a porous microstructure. The photoacoustic (PA) phase and amplitude spectra of the sintered samples were recorded as a function of the chopped frequency of the laser beam used (red laser with a power of 25 mW, λ=632 nm) in a thermal-transmission detection configuration. PA experimental data were analyzed using the Rosenzweig-Gersho thermal-piston model, which enabled determination of the thermal diffusivity DT (m2s-1), diffusion coefficient of the minority free carriers D (m2s-1) and the optical absorption coefficient (m-1). The detected differences of the measured thermal-electrical properties of the obtained Zn2SnO4 ceramics indicate changes in the material induced by the different preparation procedure of the starting powders before the sintering process.

AB - Ceramic materials with a perovskite related structures such as non-doped and doped barium titanate ceramics are attracting much interest for their application as capacitor dielectrics, resistors, thermal sensors, etc. Since mechanical activation can be used in order to modify properties of these materials, in this study microstructure evolution and electric properties of mechanically activated BaTiO3 have been analyzed. The sintering process of high purity non-doped mechanically activated BaTiO3 was monitored using a sensitive dilatometer with a heating rate of 10 degrees C/min. Investigation of the microstructure evolution of mechanically activated BaTiO3 was performed using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and digital pattern recognition (DPR) methods. A dielectric study of the paraelectric-ferroelectric phase transition in the barium titanate ceramics was performed by recording the temperature dependence of dielectric permittivity.
