AB  - One-dimensional (1D) TiO2 nanotubes perpendicular to the substrate were obtained by electrochemical oxidation of titanium foil in an acid electrolyte. In order to alter the crystallinity and the morphology of films the as-anodized amorphous TiO2 nanotube films were sintered at elevated temperatures. The evolution of the morphology was visualized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while the crystalline structure was investigated by Xray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The chemical composition was studied by Xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The effects of crystallinity and morphology of TiO2 nanotube (NTs) films on photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) in an aqueous solution under UV light irradiation were also investigated. The TiO2 nanotubes sintered at 650 degrees C for 30 min had the highest degree of crystallinity and exhibited the best photocatalytic activity among the studied TiO2 nanotube films.

AB  - Visible-light active mesoporous N,S-doped and co-doped anatase TiO2 powders were synthesized by non-hydrolytic sol-gel route, starting from TiCl4 and Ti((OPr)-Pr-i)(4) dissolved in cyclohexane or dimethyl sulfoxide, later used as a S-doping agent. After drying in an inert atmosphere, the gels were annealed at 500 degrees C for 3 h, in air or ammonia flow, later used for N-doping. The undoped titania powder, obtained by annealing in air of the cyclohexane-based gel, was also annealed in ammonia to deduce which method is more efficient for N-doping: gel or powder annealing. The post-annealing in air after annealing in ammonia was optimized to attain the best photocatalytic activity for dye degradation under simulated visible light. The size of anatase nanocrystals decreased by doping and the specific surface area of the powders increased. The XPS analysis confirmed a successful substitution of Ti4+ by S(4+) and/or S(6+), which caused a very small band-gap narrowing. The gel annealing in ammonia was much more efficient for interstitial nitrogen incorporation in TiO2 lattice than the powder annealing. The annealing in ammonia of the gel synthesized with dimethyl sulfoxide provided the highest visible-light activity owing to high specific surface area, appropriate mesoporosity and high photoabsorption due to efficient N,S co-doping.

Chemometrics in biomonitoring: Distribution and correlation of trace elements in tree leaves

AB  - The concentrations of 15 elements were measured in the leaf samples of Aesculus hippocastanum, Tilia spp., Betula pendula and Acer platanoides collected in May and September of 2014 from four different locations in Belgrade, Serbia. The objective was to assess the chemical characterization of leaf surface and in-wax fractions, as well as the leaf tissue element content, by analyzing untreated, washed with water and washed with chloroform leaf samples, respectively. The combined approach of self-organizing networks (SON) and Preference Ranking Organization Method for Enrichment Evaluation (PROMETHEE) aided by Geometrical Analysis for Interactive Aid (GAIA) was used in the interpretation of multiple element loads on/in the tree leaves. The morphological characteristics of the leaf surfaces and the elemental composition of particulate matter (PM) deposited on tree leaves were studied by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) detector. The results showed that the amounts of retained and accumulated element concentrations depend on several parameters, such as chemical properties of the element and morphological properties of the leaves. Among the studied species, Tilia spp. was found to be the most effective in the accumulation of elements in leaf tissue (70% of the total element concentration), while A. hippocastanum had the lowest accumulation (54%). After water and chloroform washing, the highest percentages of removal were observed for Al, V, Cr, Cu, Zn, As, Cd and Sb (>40%). The PROMETHEE/SONranking/classifying results were in accordance with the results obtained from the GAIA clustering techniques. The combination of the techniques enabled extraction of additional information from datasets. Therefore, the use of both the ranking and clustering methods could be a useful tool to be applied in biomonitoring studies of trace elements.

Ex-situ sensitization of ordered TiO2 nanotubes with CdS quantum dots

AB  - Ordered titania nanotubes (pore diameter approximate to 90 nm and wall thickness approximate to 10 nm) were obtained by the anodization technique and used for the ex-situ deposition of cadmium sulfide quantum dots (CdS QDs) via simple immersion of titania substrates in the CdS colloid. The colloidal dispersion of CdS nanoparticles in water was obtained in the presence of the bifunctional ligand, mercapto silane, which binds to the surface of CdS providing stability to the colloid and preventing further growth of the synthesized nanoparticles. The blue-shift of the optical absorption indicated that the CdS nanoparticles were of quantum dot size. Using the effective mass model, the average particle size was calculated to be 5.4 nm. Transmission electron microscopy provided the verification for the estimated size of the nanoparticles, which was followed by performing selected area electron diffraction to determine the mixed phase (cubic and hexagonal) of the synthesized CdS QDs. Scanning electron microscopy and reflectance spectroscopy were employed to characterize the nanostructures consisting of TiO2 nanotubes with different loadings of CdS QDs (after 24 h and 72 h immersion). It was demonstrated that mercapto silane efficiently binds CdS QDs onto TiO2 nanotubes enabling Visible-light response of the obtained nanocomposites.

AB  - In this work, zinc oxide powders were obtained by two different techniques: hydro- and solvothermal synthesis starting from Zn(NO3)(2) and Zn(CH3COO)(2), respectively. The influence of synthetic procedure on the structural, microstructural, thermal and photocatalytic properties of the prepared ZnO powders was investigated. Both ZnO samples were further annealed under moderate conditions (300 degrees C) to avoid grain growth and to remove traces of impurities. In all four cases, single-phase hexagonal ZnO was confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction. The morphologies of prepared ZnO powders were different and they varied from rounded nanograins to microrods. All prepared samples showed higher photocatalytic efficiency in the degradation of the textile azo dye Reactive Orange 16 (RO16) than commercial ZnO. In addition, the non-annealed samples had better photocatalytic properties than the commercial Degussa P25 TiO2 powder.
