AB - In this paper two methods of preparation of yttrium orthovanadate nanopowders were presented: Solid State Reaction (top - down approach) and Solution Combustion Synthesis (bottom - up approach). For starting structural characterization, X - Ray Powder Diffraction (XPRD) and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) were used. We report the change in reflection spectra in europium doped YVO4 nanopowders with comparison to its bulk analog. In UV-Vis reflection spectra we consider the change in values of band gap in these structures, after resizing it from bulk to nanomaterial. In Far - Infrared (FIR) reflection spectra, we registered the existence of Surface Optical Phonon (SOP) and different multi - phonon processes which alter the reflection spectra of bulk YVO4 . The influence of Eu ions is reflected through multi - phonon processes that occur and are connected with energy transfer from YVO4 lattice to Eu ions. All IR spectra were modeled using classical oscillator model with Drude part added which takes into account the free carrier contribution. Since our samples are distinctively inhomogeneous materials, we use Effective Medium theory in Maxwell Garnett approximation to model its effective dieletric function.

AB - In this paper, we describe synthesis and characterization of YVO4 and Eu3+-doped YVO4 nanopowders. Two methods of preparation were used-solution combustion synthesis (SCS) and classical ceramic method (CCM)-and compared. Morphology and structure of all samples were characterized with atomic-force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Raman spectroscopy was used to discuss the isotope-like effect. It is confirmed that doping with Eu ions results in a change of Raman spectra of doped samples-new modes arise, and intensity of existing ones change. Influence of different preparation methods on isotope-like effect is presented with detailed calculations of shifted modes.

AB - In this paper we present photoluminescence measurements of CdSe nanoparticles embedded in transparent glass. Sample is prepared using an original technique, which combines both heat treatment and ultraviolet laser irradiation. Photoluminescence spectra displayed one main emission band at 2.14 eV. We identify this bands energy as basic interband transition in CdSe nanoparticle. We calculated energy of basic (1s(h)-1s(e)) transition in spherical CdSe quantum dot (QD), within infinite potential barrier, in effective-mass approximation. On the basis of this model, average radius of synthesized CdSe QDs is about 3 nm, which is in consistence with AFM measurements and UV-VIS absorption measurements.

AB - Copper selenide thin films of three different thicknesses have been prepared by vacuum evaporation method on a glass substrate at room temperature. The optical properties of the films were investigated by UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Surface morphology was investigated by field-emission scanning electron microscopy. Copper selenide exhibits both direct and indirect transitions. The band gap for direct transition is found to be similar to 2.7 eV and that for indirect transition it is similar to 1.70 eV. Photoluminescence spectra of copper selenide thin films have also been analyzed, which show emission peaks at 530, 550, and 760 nm. The latter corresponds to indirect transition in investigated material.

AB - Thin films of CuSe2 nanoparticles embedded in selenium matrix were prepared by vacuum evaporation method on a glass substrate at room temperature. The optical properties of the films were investigated by photoluminescence spectroscopy (T = 20-300K) and UV-VIS spectroscopy (T = 300K). Surface morphology was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. The band gap for direct transition in CuSe2 was found to be in the range of 2.72-2.75 eV and that for indirect transition is in the range of 1.71-1.75 eV determined by UV-VIS spectroscopy. On the other hand, selenium exhibits direct band gap in the range of 2.33-2.36 eV. All estimated band gaps slightly decrease with the increase of the film thickness. Photoluminescence spectra of the thin films clearly show emission bands at about 1.63 and 2.32 eV at room temperature, with no shift observed with decreasing temperature. A model was proposed for explaining such anomaly.

AB - BaTiO3 ceramic powders were prepared by a complex method based on the Pechini type reaction route and mechanically assisted synthesis. In both ways BaTiO3 ceramics were sintered after 120 min on 1300 degrees C without pre-calcination steps. The crystal structure was investigated by the XRD, IR and Raman spectroscopy. The particle size and morphology of BaTiO3 were examined by XRD and SEM. The XRD results of powders indicate the formation of cubic phase of BaTiO3. It can be observed that in the case of Pechini process BaTiO3 powder is well crystallized but in the case of mechanochemistry process, significant amount of amorphous phase was detected. The sintered BaTiO3 ceramic sample prepared by Pechini process, shows the formation of tetragonal phase. However, IR and Raman spectrum showed a mixture of cubic and tetragonal for BaTiO3 obtained by Pechini process and tetragonal for BaTiO3 obtained by mechanically assisted synthesis.

AB - Barium titanate, BaTiO3 ceramic powders were prepared by mechanochemical synthesis and by the Pechini method. A powder mixture of BaO and TiO2 was treated in a planetary ball mill in an air atmosphere for Lip to 1 h, using zirconium oxide vial and zirconium oxide balls as the milling medium. After 60 min BaTiO3 phase was formed. In both ways BaTiO3 ceramics were sintered after 2 h on 1300 degrees C without pre-calcinations step. The heating rate was 10 degrees C min(-1). The formation of phase and crystal structure of BaTiO3 was approved by X-ray diffraction analysis and the Raman spectroscopy. The morphology and microstructure of obtained powders were examined by scanning electron microscopy method. Sharp phase transition from ferroelectric to paraelectric state was observed. The hysteresis loop is very well performed with regular sharp characteristic of ferroelectric materials.

AB - A mixture of starting ZnO and Cr2O3 powders in equimolar quantities was mechanically activated by grinding using a high energy vibro-mil I for 0, 40 and 80 min. The spinet ZnCr2O4 was prepared from activated mixtures by a conventional solid-state reaction at the temperature of 900 degrees C during 240 min. Raman scattering (RS) and Far-infrared (IR) spectroscopy were applied to study the local structure of zinc chromium oxide spinels. We report on an analysis of the vibrational spectra of the spinet ZnCr2O4 structure using both the classical factor-group theory (O-h(7) spectroscopic symmetry) and a local environmental model. The structural modifications were studied on the basis of vibrations of ZnO4 tetrahedral and CrO6 octahedral units building the crystal lattice. The RS and IR line intensities and positions remained in good agreement with the Fd3m space group. The broadness of IR and Raman bands and the fact that more vibration modes than expected were observed, may be attributed to certain disorder in the crystal symmetry of cubic spinet ZnCr2O4. Formation of the defect spinel structure can be assigned to mechanical activation of the starting oxide mixture.
