AB - Extracts of the aerial (fronds) and underground parts (rhizome and roots) of Asplenium adiantum-nigrum L. and Asplenium ruta-muraria L. were analyzed for their phenolic composition and antioxidant properties (scavenging capacities against DPPH center dot and ABTS(center dot+)), and were comparatively assayed for antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity. Total of the 17 phenolic compounds, belonging to the classes of phenolic acids (hydroxybenzoic and hydroxycinnamic acids), flavonoids (flavan-3-ols, flavonols), and xanthones were identified and quantified using UHPLC/DAD/(-)HESI-MS/MS analysis. The present study shows that two analyzed ferns are significantly diverse in terms of their phenolic profile. Flavonoids considerably contribute to the total phenolic content of A. ruta-muraria, ranging from 47% in roots to around 75% in rhizome and fronds, while A. adiantum-nigrum preferably accumulates xanthones. Antioxidant activity of fern methanol extracts was ascribed to their phenolics content. Extracts of rhizomes of both Asplenium ferns exhibited the highest antimicrobial activity, while frond extracts were more efficient in inhibition of Candida albicans biofilm formation. The present study provides experimental evidence that methanol extracts from two analyzed Asplenium fern species exhibit strong antibacterial effect against Gram-negative bacteria which candidate them as a potentially useful natural antimicrobial agents.

AB - We have studied Ho-doped BiFeO3 nanopowders (Bi1-xHoxFeO3, x = 0-0.15), prepared via sol-gel method, in order to analyse the effect of substitution-driven structural transition on dielectric and ferroelectric properties of bismuth ferrite. X-ray diffraction and Raman study demonstrated that an increased Ho concentration (x >= 0.1) has induced gradual phase transition from rhombohedral to orthorhombic phase. The frequency dependent permittivity of Bi1-xHoxFeO3 nanopowders was analysed within a model which incorporates Debye-like dielectric response and dc and ac conductivity contributions based on universal dielectric response. It was shown that influence of leakage current and grain boundary/interface effects on dielectric and ferroelectric properties was substantially reduced in biphasic Bi1-xHoxFeO3 (x > 0.1) samples. The electrical performance of Bi0.85Ho0.15FeO3 sample, for which orthorhombic phase prevailed, was significantly improved and Bi0.85Ho0.15FeO3 has sustained strong applied electric fields (up to 100 kV/cm) without breakdown. Under strong external fields, the polarization exhibited strong frequency dependence. The low-frequency remnant polarization and coercive field of Bi0.85Ho0.15FeO3 were significantly enhanced. It was proposed that defect dipolar polarization substantially contributed to the intrinsic polarization of Bi0.85Ho0.15FeO3 under strong electric fields at low frequencies.

AB - Polycrystalline Bi1-xPr(Ce)(x)FeO3 ceramics (x = 0, 0.03, 0.05 and 0.10) were prepared by auto-combustion method using urea as a fuel. The influence of Pr(Ce) doping on structural, vibrational, morphological, dielectric and ferroelectric properties of BiFeO3 polycrystalline ceramics was investigated. From X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy measurements it was observed that Pr(Ce) doping generated a reduction of the crystallite (grain) size of BiFeO3 and contraction of the rhombohedral cell due to the increased compressive strain. The changes seen in the XRD and Raman spectra of 10% Pr(Ce)doped samples, pointed to a probable appearance of orthorhombic (pseudotetragonal) crystal structure. The pristine BiFeO3 exhibited rounded shape, non-saturated ferroelectric hysteresis loop. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss have shown strong dispersion at lower frequencies, typical for conductive BiFeO3. Dielectric and ferroelectric properties at room temperature were improved with Pr doping. Concerning the Ce-doped samples, only the 3% Ce-doped sample exhibited a better shaped hysteresis loop and improved dielectric properties compared to the pristine BiFeO3. With further increase of Ce content the ferroelectric properties degraded.

AB - The titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanopowders were produced by sol-gel technique from tetrabutyl titanate as a precursor, varying the temperature of calcination (from 500 to 550 degrees C with the step of 10 degrees C). XRPD results have shown that all synthesized nanopowders are dominantly in anatase phase. The analysis of the shift and linewidth of the most intensive anatase E-g Raman mode confirmed the XRPD results and added the presence of small amount of highly disordered brookite phase in all samples. The analysis of pore structure from nitrogen sorption experimental data described all samples as mesoporous, with mean pore diameters in the range of 1.5 and 4.5 nm. Nanopowder properties have been related to the photocatalytic activity, tested in degradation of the textile dye (C.I. Reactive Orange 16). The sample calcined at temperature of 510 degrees C showed the best photocatalytic performance.

AB - Two series of nanocrystalline brookite-type powders have been synthesized by using combined sal gel hydrothermal method with titanium tetrachloride (TiCI4) as a precursor and hydrothermal temperature and reaction time varied in the range of 120-200 degrees C and 12-48 h, respectively. The effects of chosen synthesis parameters on structural, morphological and optical properties of synthesized powders have been investigated by the XRPD, SEM, EDS and BET measurements, as well Raman spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry. The XRPD results have shown that pure brookite phase, with mean crystallite size of -33 nm, has been obtained only in the sample synthesized at 200 degrees C, after 24 h of hydrothermal process. In all other samples anatase phase also appears, whereas rutile and sodium titanate phases have been noticed in the samples synthesized at lower temperatures. The presence of different titania phases has also been confirmed and analyzed by Raman scattering measurements. The SEM measurements have shown spindle-like particles in brookite-rich samples synthesized at 200 degrees C, whereas BET measurements have detected mesoporous structure in these samples. The properties of synthesized powders have been correlated to their photocatalytic efficiency, tested in degradation of alprazolam, one of the 5th generation benzodiazepines. The sample consisted of pure brookite has shown the highest efficiency in the photodegradation of alprazolam, practically equal to the activity of Degussa P25.

Two cerium (III) salts, i.e., Ce(NO3)(3)center dot 6H(2)O and CeCl3 center dot 7H(2)O, and two cerium (IV) salts, i.e., Ce (SO4)(2)center dot 4H(2)O and (NH4)(2)Ce(NO3)(6) were applied. The proposed procedures for the CeO2 preparations were realizdd using the same hydrothermal treatment conditions. The products were characterized using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, and the morphology was determined using scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The spectral properties of the obtained nanopowders were characterized by FT-IR, Raman scattering and UV-vis spectroscopy. The results revealed the influence of the precursors on the crystallinity, crystallite size, band gap energy, morphology and purity of the synthesized samples.

AB - In this work, zinc oxide powders were obtained by two different techniques: hydro- and solvothermal synthesis starting from Zn(NO3)(2) and Zn(CH3COO)(2), respectively. The influence of synthetic procedure on the structural, microstructural, thermal and photocatalytic properties of the prepared ZnO powders was investigated. Both ZnO samples were further annealed under moderate conditions (300 degrees C) to avoid grain growth and to remove traces of impurities. In all four cases, single-phase hexagonal ZnO was confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction. The morphologies of prepared ZnO powders were different and they varied from rounded nanograins to microrods. All prepared samples showed higher photocatalytic efficiency in the degradation of the textile azo dye Reactive Orange 16 (RO16) than commercial ZnO. In addition, the non-annealed samples had better photocatalytic properties than the commercial Degussa P25 TiO2 powder.

AB - Structural disorder of ZnO nanopowders with mean crystallite size down to 15 nm, produced by mechanical activation in high energy mills, has been analyzed by x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The influence of such disorder on optical and electronic properties of activated ZnO nanopowders has been investigated using photoluminescence spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry. A revised interpretation of the resonant enhancement of the first and second order Raman scattering by the E-1(LO) phonons in highly disorder ZnO nanopowders has been proposed. Detailed analysis of resonant Raman effects in ZnO powders under sub band gap excitation has given valuable information about defect induced electronic states in the band gap of ZnO. Systematic trend in the electron-phonon coupling strength, with the correlation length which depends on lattice disorder in ZnO, has been also demonstrated.
