AB - Pure and samarium (Sm3+) - or zirconium (Zr4+)-doped TiO2 nanofibers were synthesized by electro-
spinning method followed by calcination at 500 °C for 1 h. As-spun fibers were smooth, straight and
continuous, whilst EDS analysis confirmed the fiber composition and incorporation of dopants in
the fibers. Doping with Sm3+ and Zr4+ greatly inhibited the phase transformation of anatase to
rutile, by surrounding of Sm3+ ions through formation of Ti-O-Sm bonds and by replacement of
Ti4+ ions with larger Zr4+ ions. This was confirmed by HRTEM and SAED analysis. The size of
nanofibers was determined to be 133 nm, 175 nm and 155 nm for pure, (0.5%)Sm3+:TiO2 and
(1%)Zr4+:TiO2, respectively. After cal- cination, TiO2 crystal lattice with interplanar spacing of
0.353 nm of (101) crystal plane was not significantly disturbed by Sm doping whilst crystal
lattice spacing of 0.357 nm of (101) planes of anatase phase in case TiO2:1.0%Zr4+,
significantly differs from the value of pure TiO2 (0.352 nm), thus implying that Zr was
doped into substitutional sites of the TiO2 lattice. The indirect band gaps were
calculated to be in the range 3.07–3.24 eV. TiO2:0.5%Sm3+ and TiO2:1.0%Zr4+ exhibited higher
specific surface area, of 47.1 and 59.4 m2/g, respectively, than pure TiO2 fibers (19.7 m2/g).
Effects of Sm3+ and Zr4+ dopant content on the photodegradation efficiency of methylene blue (MB)
were studied. TiO2:0.5%Sm3+ and TiO2:1.0%Zr4+ nanofibers have shown the highest photocatalytic
activity of 97% and 98% with constant rates 0.01768 min−1 and 0.01939 min−1,
respectively, within180 min irradiation under
visible light.

AB - Bismuth ferrite (BFO, BiFeO3), exhibiting both ferromagnetic and ferroelectric properties at room
temperature, is one of the most researched multiferroic materials with a growing number of technological applications. In the present study, using a combined theoretical–experimental approach, we have investigated the influence of Ho-doping on the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of BFO. Synthesis and structural XRD characterization of Bi1 xHoxFeO3 (x = 0.02, 0.05, and 0.10) nanopowders have been completed. After structure prediction of Ho-doped BiFeO3 using bond valence calculations (BVC), six most favorable candidates were found: a-, b-, g-, R-, T1, and T2. Furthermore, all structure candidates have been examined for different magnetic ordering using DFT calculations. The magnetic behavior of the synthesized materials was investigated using a SQUID magnetometer equipped with an oven. The plethora of magnetic and electronic properties of the Ho-doped BFO that our theoretical research predicted can open up rich possibilities for further investigation and eventual applications.

AB - To investigate the effect of synthesis procedure and sintering temperature on the functional properties of perovskite/spinel ceramics, BaTiO3/CoFe2O4 composites were prepared by thermal decomposition, coprecipitation, and microemulsion method, and sintered at 1150°C and 1300°C. The phase composition and morphology of as-prepared powders as well as sintered ceramics were thoroughly examined by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The dielectric and ferroelectric measurements were performed in detail. Generally, the samples sintered at 1300°C had better performances than those sintered at 1150°C. The composite synthesized by thermal decomposition and sintered at 1300 °C stands out among other prepared BaTiO3/CoFe2O4 ceramics, owing to high stability in the wide frequency range and low leakage currents. The obtained results indicate that such composite might be successfully applied as a functional multiferroic.

AB - To investigate the influence of spinel structure and sintering temperature on the functional properties of BaTiO3/NixZn1−xFe2O4 (x = 0, 0.5, 1), NiFe2O4, ZnFe2O4, and Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 were in situ prepared by thermal decomposition onto BaTiO3 surface from acetylacetonate precursors. As-prepared powders were additionally sintered at 1150 °C and 1300 °C. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used for the detailed examination of phase composition and morphology. The magnetic, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties were investigated. The optimal phase composition in the BaTiO3/NiFe2O4 composite, sintered at 1150 °C, resulted in a wide frequency range stability. Additionally, particular phase composition indicates favorable properties such as low conductivity and ideal-like hysteresis loop behavior. The favorable properties of BaTiO3/NiFe2O4 make this particular composite an ideal material choice for further studies on applications of multi-ferroic devices.

AB - Anorthite ceramics was fabricated from calcium exchanged Na-LTA zeolite. The powder compacts of Ca-LTA zeolite were sintered at different temperatures ranging between 1100 and 1400°C. It was found that the temperature of 1100°C was sufficiently high to trigger formation of anorthite which stayed stable even at temperature as high as 1400°C. The highest relative density and the lowest open porosity were measured in samples sintered at 1200°C for 3 h. The effect of milling time of Ca-LTA zeolite precursor on density, microstructure and mechanical properties of samples sintered at 1200°C for 3 h was investigated. The particle size refinement appeared to be beneficial in accelerating densification process and improving mechanical properties. The density, compressive strength and hardness of anorthite ceramics obtained from non-milled precursor were measured to be 70.5 %TD, 64 MPa and 1.45 GPa, respectively. On the other side the anorthite ceramics obtained from 24-hour-long milled zeolite precursor had density of 83.9 %TD, compressive strength of 101 MPa and hardness of 3.44 GPa.

AB - S and N-doped carbon dots (S-CDs and N-CDs) and their cisplatin (cis-Pt) derivatives.
(S-CDs@cis-Pt and N-CDs@cis-Pt) were tested on two ovarian cancer cell lines: A2780 and A2780 cells
resistant to cis-Pt (A2780R). Several spectroscopic techniques were employed to check S-CDs@cis-Pt and
N-CDs@cis-Pt: solid- and solution-state nuclear magnetic resonance, matrix-assisted laser desorption,
ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In addition,
synchrotron-based Fourier Transformed Infrared spectro-microscopy was used to evaluate the biochemical
changes in cells after treatment with cis-Pt, S-CDs, N-CDs, or S-CDs@cis-Pt and N-CDs@cis-Pt, respectively.
Computational chemistry was applied to establish the model for the most stable bond between
S-CDs and N-CDs and cis-Pt. The results revealed the successful modification of S-CDs and N-CDs with
cis-Pt and the formation of a stable composite system that can be used for drug delivery to cancer cells and likewise to overcome acquired cis-Pt resistance. Nanoparticle treatment of A2780 and A2780R cells
led to the changes in their structure of lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids depending on the treatment. The
results showed the S-CDs@cis-Pt and N-CDs@cis-Pt might be used in the combination with cis-Pt to treat
the adenocarcinoma, thus having a potential to be further developed as drug delivery systems.

AB - Diatomite (diatomaceous earth) and clay minerals deposits from the mining basin Kolubara, Serbia, are natural materials with high economic potential in many fields. As received and treated materials, diatomite and clay were characterized using X-ray diffraction, mercury intrusion porosimetry, particle size distribution, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Activity concentrations for natural radionuclides 40K, 226Ra and 232Th and anthropogenic radionuclide 137Cs in diatomite and clay were determined by gamma spectrometry with HPGe detector. For diatomite and clay, the mean activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K were found to be 9, 26 and 173 Bq kg-1 and 19, 26 and 470 Bq kg-1, respectively. In the present study was to show that these materials are environmentally safe for further use in many fields.

AB - Functionalization of electrodes is a wide-used strategy in various applications ranging from single-molecule sensing and protein sequencing, to ion trapping, to desalination. We demonstrate, employing non-equilibrium Green ' s function formalism combined with density functional theory, that single-species (N, H, S, Cl, F) termination of graphene nanogap electrodes results in a strong in-gap electrostatic field, induced by species-dependent dipoles formed at the electrode ends. Consequently, the field increases or decreases electronic transport through a molecule (benzene) placed in the nanogap by shifting molecular levels by almost 2 eV in respect to the electrode Fermi level via a field effect akin to the one used for field-effect transistors. We also observed the local gating in graphene nanopores terminated with different single-species atoms. Nitrogen-terminated nanogaps (NtNGs) and nanopores (NtNPs) show the strongest effect. The in-gap potential can be transformed from a plateau-like to a saddle-like shape by tailoring NtNG and NtNP size and termination type. In particular, the saddle-like potential is applicable in single-ion trapping and desalination devices.

AB - The clay minerals deposit from the mining basin Kolubara, Serbia, is a natural sediment material with high economic potential in many fields. The chemical composition of starting clay determined by inductively coupled plasma spectrometry shows that its main composition of SiO2 is 88.00 wt.%. Organic impurities from clay have been removed by heat treatment at 600 °C for 2 h in air. After thermal treatment, an aqueous solution of HCl sedimentary mineral was chemically treated. Surface properties of starting clay and thermally and chemically treated clay (treated clay) were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and particle size distribution method. The XRD analyses of the starting and treated clay confirmed that quartz is a significant phase, followed by the appearance of feldspar and smectite clays. The SEM method showed impressively layered microstructure on various magnifications for both groups of investigated materials. The average particle diameter value for starting clay was about 23 μm and about 53 μm for treated clay. These methods showed that the starting clay changed the surface properties during thermal and chemical treatment, resulting in the merging of clay layers.

AB - The synthesis of SBA-15 material with spherical particles is performed by the template method by using only a surfactant Pluronic P123 under acidic conditions. In the synthesis of SBA-15 with spherical particles, an HCl solution was used after specialised chemical treatment of clay purification. The dominant presence of the spheres with diameters up to around 2 μm was confirmed by the scanning electron microscopy(SEM) method. In contrast, the Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS) confirmed that the spheres consisted only of SiO2 in composition. In addition to the methods mentioned above, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR) methods were used to characterise SBA-15 materials. Application of HCl solution after chemical treatment of clay purification represents the application of technology in the synthesis of spherical SBA-15.

AB - The template method synthesis of both SBA-15 materials with elongated and spherical particles was performed using a surfactant Pluronic P123. The HCl (p.a.) was used to synthesize material with elongated particles connected in chain structures grouped into shapes resembling sheaves of wheat. In the synthesis of spherical SBA-15 with diameters ranging from 0.5 to 2 μm, a spent HCl solution which was obtained after chemical treatment of clay was used where the dominant presence of the spheres was confirmed by the SEM method. In addition to the methods mentioned above, XRD, EDS and FTIR methods characterize SBA-15 materials.

AB - Cerium-based conversion coatings have emerged as promising green alternatives to the harmful chromium-based ones, but the mechanism of corrosive protection still remains a subject of academic and industrial research. This study focuses at small scale phenomena of corrosion inhibition imparted by ceria (CeO2) to AA7075. Ceria nanoparticles were deposited from diluted and concentrated CeO2 sols by immersion. A multi-analytical approach, combining Atomic Force microscopy (AFM), Scanning Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy, Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectroscopy, open circuit potential and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was employed. Deposition of ceria films led to deactivation of cathodic sites, i.e. decreased Volta potential difference, resulting in increased corrosion inhibition. In situ AFM real-time monitoring revealed that during exposure to NaCl electrolyte, the changes in size of deposited ceria aggregates occurred: nanoparticles disintegrated/desorbed and re-deposited at the coating surface. The process was found to be dynamic in nature. Small particles size and inherent reactivity are believed to accelerate this phenomenon. Due to the greater CeO2 reservoir, this phenomenon was more pronounced with a thicker film, imparting longer term protection.

AB - The mining basin Kolubara lies about 50 km southwest of Belgrade and stretches across the river Kolubara from Lajkovac to its mouth in the Sava River. During coal exploitation a huge amount of clay is deposited as separate layer. Clay as a raw mineral material has a high economic potential due to their low price and high abundance. This material is used for various applications such as filters, heat insulators, absorbents, catalyst supports, building materialn and advanced environmental applications. Clay from Kolubara mining basin is
caracterised by inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy (ICP), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Also, activity concentrations of 40K, 226Ra and 232Th in clay from Kolubara mining, were determined by gamma ray spectrometry with HP Ge detector.

AB - Diatomaceous earth is of sedimentary origin consists mainly of accumulated skeletons formed as a protective covering of the diatoms. Usually, high absorption capacity of diatomaceous earth provides its wide use as heat insulation, filter and absorbent material. Starting raw material diatomaceous earth from surface coal mine Kolubara, Serbia, was characterized using, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD). Chemical composition of diatomaceous earth was determined by wet chemical methods. In addition, the absorbed gamma ray dose rates is estimated based on the measured activity concentrations of natural radionuclides in clay were determined by gamma spectrometry. This research shows that this material is environmentally safe for further use.
