AB - The black bullhead is an invasive species that forms dense populations and has a negative impact on the native ichthyofauna. Recent studies indicate that it is one of the most dominant invasive fish species in Serbian waters. Feeding habits based on stomach contents of individuals caught in Lake Sava were analyzed as a first step towards evaluating its possible negative impact on the native fish fauna of the lake. The following indices for diet analysis were applied: vacuity index, frequency of occurrence, numerical abundance and prominence value. Trophic niche breadth and seasonal trophic diversity were calculated using the Shannon's index. The diet spectrum comprised 16 different prey categories from five groups: Mollusca, Crustacea, Insecta, Teleostei and plants. Fish were the main prey in all seasons, followed by aquatic invertebrates. Plant material and terrestrial insects were used as food in relatively small quantities. Predation on fish eggs was also detected. Our research confirmed that this species is an opportunistic generalist. An ontogenetic diet shift was also detected. The lowest value of trophic diversity was found in age 1+ individuals (H=1.39), while the highest was found in age 3+ individuals (H=2.00). The widest niche breadth was recorded in spring 2011 (H=2.12).

AB - Gobioids (Gobiiformes: Gobioidei) are a large group of vocal fishes with four sound types documented during aggressive or reproductive interactions in 23 species. Most attention has been dedicated to sound production in Gobiidae and Gobionellidae, while acoustic communications in other phylogenetically distant gobioid groups have been neglected. Odontobutidae, a basal family within the gobioids, is a poorly studied fish assemblage, with sounds documented in only a single species. The goal of this study was to record and describe the acoustic signals produced by Perccottus glenii (Odontobutidae) under laboratory conditions, with particular focus on the reproductive phase (courtship and pre-spawning), and to provide insight into the anatomical basis of the sound emission mechanism. We recorded two acoustically different call types, thumps and tonal sounds. Thumps were low-frequency sounds (similar to 95 Hz) with an irregular waveform, produced by males during both the courtship and pre-spawning phases. Thumps were frequently organized in long trains, a thump burst, composed from approximately five thumps and lasting over 10 s. Tonal sounds were short vocalizations (similar to 90 ms) produced only during courtship interactions, characterized by a sinusoidal oscillogram and a single frequency peak (similar to 120 Hz). Additionally, anatomical examination focusing on the pectoral girdle identified the muscles that could be responsible for sound emission. The levator pectoralis muscle, originating on the neurocranium and attaching to the cleithral bone, is separated into three bundles: a pars lateralis superficialis, a pars lateralis profundus and a pars medialis. These results expand the knowledge about gobioid vocal behaviour and underline the importance of acoustic communication within this group of fish. Odontobutidae is a sister group to rest of the gobioids, and therefore, our results have significant impact for future comparative studies dealing with sound production.

AB - This study was conducted during the summer of 2017 in six reservoirs in Serbia used for different purposes – water supply (Garaši), electricity generation (Vlasina, Perućac, Zaovine and Medjuvršje) and recreation (Lake Sava), with different characteristics and degrees of eutrophication . Analysis of Ag, Al, As, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, P, Pb, S, Se, Si, Sr, and Zn in muscle, gills and liver of the European perch, as well as in water and sediment samples, was performed by inductively-coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). Histopathological (HP) analysis of gills and liver and Fulton's condition factor (CF) were used as biomarkers. The correlations between the elemental accumulation and CF, as well as between HP indices for gills and liver were assessed. Also, the values of pollution load index (PLI), degree of contamination (Cd), potential environmental risk (RI), and human health risk (THQ and TR) were assessed. Elemental accumulation varied considerably both among tissues and reservoirs. The gills were most affected by pollution. Low levels of HP changes were observed, with no significant differences between the reservoirs. No significant correlations between the elemental accumulation and CF, as well as between HP indices were observed. The PLI indicated that sediments in all six reservoirs were contaminated, but Cd and RI were low. Higher values of PLI, Cd, RI, and TR were observed in electricity generation reservoirs. Results indicated that this type of reservoirs suffer from higher anthropogenic pressure and/or have a worse pollution management policy compared with other types of reservoirs included in this study, especially the drinking water supply reservoir.

AB - Concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, and Zn in sediment samples and muscle tissue of the European perch were analyzed using inductively-coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), with the aim to assess the potential ecological (RI) and human health risk, and the degree of contamination (Cd) of three types of reservoirs in Serbia, based on their purpose: electricity generation (Vlasina, PeruEac, Zaovine, and Meduvrkie), drinking water supply (GarOi), and recreation (Lake Sava). The concentrations of the studied elements were higher in sediments than in fish. However, the levels of Cd in fish caught in Vlasina, Zaovine, and Meduvrkie, Hg in Perueac and GarOi, and Pb in Lake Sava exceeded the maximum allowed concentrations. The pollution load index (PLI) indicated that sediments in all six reservoirs were contaminated, but Cd was low; a moderate contamination with Cd was observed in Vlasina, Peru&c, and Zaovine, Cr in Zaovine and Meduvfgje, and Cu in Meduvitje. A low RI was recorded for all studied reservoirs. Cd was found to be the primary contamination and ecological risk factor. Total target hazard quotient (THOJ and target carcinogenic risk factor (TR) were higher for fishers operating in these reservoirs than for the general population.

AB - This study was conducted on individuals of European perch from six reservoirs in Serbia with different properties, used for different purposes, and situated at different altitudes. Samples of muscle, gills, and liver, as well as water samples, were used for analysis of elemental accumulation. Histopathological (HP) analysis of gills and liver, and Fulton's condition factor (CF) were used as biomarkers. Analysis of Ag, Al, As, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, P, Pb, S, Se, Si, Sr, and Zn was conducted by inductively-coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), and accordingly, metal pollution index and bioaccumulation factor (BAF) were calculated. Elemental accumulation varied considerably both among tissues and reservoirs. Reservoirs located on large low-altitude rivers were the most heavily polluted with metals (Meduvrgje, on the Zapadna Morava River, and Lake Sava, on the Sava River). Of three tissues analyzed, the gills were most affected by pollution. The levels of Hg in muscle decreased with an increase in reservoir altitude. Specimens sampled from the highest altitude reservoir were the least affected by HP alterations; however, HP differences between the reservoirs were not statistically significant, and the severity of HP changes was generally low. No significant correlations between the elemental accumulation or HP indices with CF were observed.

abstract = "This study was conducted on individuals of European perch from six reservoirs in Serbia with different properties, used for different purposes, and situated at different altitudes. AB - The life-history traits and population dynamics of the black bullhead Ameiurus melas (Rafinesque) were studied monthly from August 2009 to December 2012 in Lake Sava in Belgrade (Serbia). This period included a mass mortality event in May 2011 and subsequent population recovery during 2012. Available evidence suggests the mass mortality was caused by European catfish virus that only affected the black bullhead. Changes in key life-history traits and the recovery potential (increase in catch-per-unit-effort, doubling of young-of-the-year to adult ratio, earlier maturation and increased fecundity) following the mass mortality event suggest population resilience typical of a recurring boom-bust pattern and demonstrate the species' capacity to recover rapidly and re-establish following disturbance. Repeated systematic mass removals of both juveniles and adults (using fyke nets) will be required if future fishery management measures aimed at limiting the population size are to be effective.

AB - Fish communities are excellent indicators of biological and ecological integrity due to
their continuous exposure to water conditions. Freshwater biodiversity constitute a valu able natural resource but extensive pollution of freshwater can result in biodiversity de cline. For that reason it is important to employ bioassays for purpose of detecting these
conditions. In this work we monitored chub and bream species in 2 reservoirs, Uvac and
Garasi, and 4 rivers: Dunav, Sava, Pestan and Beljanica. For assessment of metal and
metalloid in fish tissues (liver, gills, gonads and muscle) we have used ICP-OES. The
comet assay or single cell gel electrophoresis (SCGE) was selected as an in vivo geno toxicity assay, for measuring DNA damage in blood, liver and gills. Histopathological
alterations were monitored in liver and gills. The high quality of Uvac water was con firmed by low values of DNA damage in all tissues compared to other sites. An analysis
metals in tissues showed a high degree of their differentiation, as well as significant dif ferences in the distribution of tissue elements between the sites tested. The highest con centrations of most of the analyzed metals were found in gills, liver and gonads, and the
lowest in muscles at all sites. In chub, blood showed the lowest DNA damage compared
to liver and gills, while in all breams DNA damage was the highest in blood cells, follow ing gills and liver. Histopathological analysis performed on bream specimens on the Sava
and Danube River revealed a higher degree of alterations in liver compared to the gills.

AB - Pontic shad (Alosa immaculata) is a migratory fish species, which undergoes long migrations along the Danube River, from Black Sea to the first obstacle that stops the migration the Iron Gate II dam.
Individuals used in this study were caught using drift nets, in 2018 (n=11) and 2019 (n=11), few kilometres down stream of the Iron Gate II Dam, near village of Prahovo, Serbia. Blood samples were taken from live individuals and two blood smears were prepared, on microscopic slides, for each individual. Slides were stained with Bio-Diff kit (Bio Optica, Milano, Italy) and observed and photographed under DM RB photomicroscope (Leica, Wetzlar, Germany). Pictures were analysed using the Digimizer image analysis software which automatically calculated celular and nuclear parameters of red blood cells.
The proportion of immature, intermediate, and mature erythrocytes were calculated and the differences in cellular and nuclear parameters were tested using the Mann-Whitney U test. Average length of the fish caught at 2018 was 31.9±3.9 cm, with the average weight of 188.9±48.9 g. Individuals from 2019 sampling had an average length of 29.6±2.7 cm, and the average weight of 147.2±57.5 g. Average value of Fulton’s condition factor did not differ between sampling seasons (K=0.57). Overall, in both years, immature erythrocytes constitute the majority (>57%) of analysed red blood cells. Individuals caught at 2018 had higher proportion of immature and intermediate cells, while fish caught at 2019 had higher proportion of mature cells- Man-Whitney U test showed no statistically significant differences in cell area, parameter and length between fish caught at different years.
The same morphometirc parameters, observed for nuceus, showed statistically significant differences. Our study shows that anadromous fish, such as pontic shad, which undergoes long migrations, have 2-2.5 times higher proportion of immature erytrocytes then potamodromous vimba bream (Vimba vimba), a medium distance migratory fish species.

AB - Concentrations of As, Cr, Fe, Hg, Mn, Se and Zn were assessed by ICP-OES in muscle, gills, liver and gonads of ruffe and European perch of different age classes. Fish were caughtwith portablefish nets at the confluence of the Danube river and the Sava River, in Belgrade. Age-related differences in element concentration were assessed by ANOVA and Tukeys (HSD) tests. In ruffe, liver is the main tissue for accumulation of Cu, Fe and Se in all age classes. Gills are the main tissue for accumalation of Mn, while gonads had a higher concentrations of all elements in liver (exept for Cr), while individuals aged 4+ had the highest element concentration in gonads (again, with the exception of Cr). However, these age-related differences in ruffe were not statistically significant. In European perch, the highest concentrations of As, Cu, Fe, Se and Zn in majority of age classes were found in the liver. Individuals aged 1+ and 2+ had the highest concentration of Hg in gills. In subsequent age classes, muscle was the main tissue for accumulation of this element. Contrary to ruffe, age-related differences were observed for Se in liver, where age classes 4+ and 5+ had higher concentrations than age-class 1+, as well as for Zn in gonads, where age classes 4+ and 5+ had higher concentrations than age-class 1+, as well as for zn in gonads, where age class 1+ had higher concentration than age class 3+.

parametara vode. Uzorkovanje riba je vršeno mrežama (20-50 m dužine, 1.5-2 m visine i
28-100 mm promera okca) tokom leta 2017. godine. Ukupno je uzorkovano 795 jedinki riba
koje pripadaju 21 vrsti. Multiparametarska sonda YSI 6600 V2-2 korišćena je za prikupljanje
podataka o fizičkim, hemijskim i biološkim karakteristikama ispitivanih akumulacija.
Zaovine i Međuvršje.

parametara vode. Uzorkovanje riba je vršeno mrežama (20-50 m dužine, 1.5-2 m visine i
28-100 mm promera okca) tokom leta 2017. godine. Ukupno je uzorkovano 795 jedinki riba
koje pripadaju 21 vrsti. Multiparametarska sonda YSI 6600 V2-2 korišćena je za prikupljanje
podataka o fizičkim, hemijskim i biološkim karakteristikama ispitivanih akumulacija.
Zaovine i Međuvršje.

crnog američkog patuljastog soma i drugih vrsta riba, za svaki mesec pojedinačno. Ukupno
94.2%, grgeča (Perca fluviatilis) 3.2% i sunčice (Lepomis gibbosus) 2.1%.

invazivna vrsta i u mnogim kopnenim vodama u Srbiji, uključujući i Savsko jezero (Jaćimović,
2015).
Zdravstveno stanje populacije crnog američkog patuljastog soma u Savskom jezeru procenjeno
uzorcima prikupljenim tokom 2011. i 2012. godine. Prevalencija parazitiranosti predstavljena

fonda.
Odnos ulova u rekreativnom i komercijalnom ribolovu pokazuje značajne

AB - Age, growth, and length-weight relationship of the vimba bream (Vimba vimba) were analysed
on a sample of 43 individuals from a commercial catch, caught between March and May 2017
in the Danube River near Belgrade. Total body length of the sampled fish ranged from 26.3 to
34.5 cm, and body weight from 223 to 554 g. Age of the sampled fish, determined from scales,
ranged from 5+ to 8+, with the largest percentage of individuals in the age class 6+. The
regression coefficient of the length-weight relationship was b = 3.28, which indicates a positive
allometry. The parameters of the von Bertalanffy function were L∞ = 543.82, K = 0.09, and t0
= -2.41. The estimated phi-prime growth performance index (') was 4.44. The Fulton’s

AB - Heavy metals have high potential to enter and accumulate in food chains and therefore
are considered as critical contaminants of aquatic ecosystems (Erdoğrul and Erbilir 2007).
Given that fish are situated at the top of the food chain they can accumulate large amount of
heavy metals (Yilmaz et al. 2007). Heavy metals are taken up through different organs of
the fish because of the affinity between them, and then are concentrated at different levels
in different organs of the body (Bervoets et al. 2001). Accumulation of heavy metals in
muscle tissues was the most studied, given that muscle tissue is the main fish part that is
consumed by humans (Begum et al. 2013; Storelli et al. 2006). However, it is important to
analyze other tissues since muscles are not always a good indicator of the whole fish body
contamination (Has-Schön et al. 2006).
The Danube River is the second longest river in Europe and runs through Serbia at a length
of 587.4 km. The biggest industrial capacities are largely located on the Danube river banks -
Belgrade, Novi Sad, Pančevo and Smederevo (Petrović 2015). The main problem is that none
of them has any kind of system for treating municipal wastewaters (Veljković 2005).
Within this study, published articles regarding heavy metal accumulation in different
tissues of fish in the Danube in Serbia were analyzed in order to evaluate which species,
tissues and elements were the most represented in the analyses. The main aim was to assess
present practices in research of heavy metal pollution in this region, as well as to identify
key gaps regarding the particular river sections, types of pollutants, tissues, and trophic
and functional groups of fish communities that were inadequately represented in research.

AB - Diverzitet i struktura naselja riba predstavljaju važne karakteristike dinamike akvatičnih
ekosistema. Kako nastanjuju različita staništa i pripadaju različitim trofičkim nivoima, ribe
Dunav u toku kroz Srbiju nastanjuje 68 vrsta iz 50 rodova i 16 familija (Simonović
& Nikolić, 1997). Sastav faune beogradskog sektora Dunava karakteriše prisustvo oko 55
njima imaju i alohtone vrste. Izgradnjom HE “Đerdap” dolazi do kritične ugroženosti ili
nestanka anadromnih vrsta jesetri (fam. Acipenseridae). Što se biomase tiče, javlja se dominacija
tzv. «bele ribe». Pored deverike (Abramis brama), značajan udeo imaju i rečna mrena
(Barbus barbus), šaran (Cyprinus carpio) i jaz (Leuciscus idus) (ibid.). Cilj ovog rada jeste
ratnog ostrva i rukavac Jojkića Dunavac). Indeksi diverziteta se koriste za kvantifikaciju
raznovrsnosti zajednice, a njihove različite vrednosti mogu ukazati i na različit intenzitet
antropogenog pritiska.
mrežama (dužine 20-50 m, dubine 1,4 m i promera okaca 4, 4,5, i 5 cm).
fluviatilis). S druge strane, u otvorenoj i bržoj vodi oko Velikog ratnog ostrva zabeleženo je
prisustvo reofilnih vrsta, kesege (Abramis ballerus), bucova (Aspius aspius), rečne mrene
(B. barbus), skobalja (Chondrostoma nasus) i smuđa (Sander lucioperca). Vrednosti analiziranih

abstract = "Diverzitet i struktura naselja riba predstavljaju važne karakteristike dinamike akvatičnih
ekosistema. Kako nastanjuju različita staništa i pripadaju različitim trofičkim nivoima, ribe
Dunav u toku kroz Srbiju nastanjuje 68 vrsta iz 50 rodova i 16 familija (Simonović
& Nikolić, 1997). Sastav faune beogradskog sektora Dunava karakteriše prisustvo oko 55
njima imaju i alohtone vrste. Izgradnjom HE “Đerdap” dolazi do kritične ugroženosti ili
nestanka anadromnih vrsta jesetri (fam. Acipenseridae). Što se biomase tiče, javlja se dominacija
tzv. «bele ribe». Pored deverike (Abramis brama), značajan udeo imaju i rečna mrena
(Barbus barbus), šaran (Cyprinus carpio) i jaz (Leuciscus idus) (ibid.). Cilj ovog rada jeste
ratnog ostrva i rukavac Jojkića Dunavac). Indeksi diverziteta se koriste za kvantifikaciju
raznovrsnosti zajednice, a njihove različite vrednosti mogu ukazati i na različit intenzitet
antropogenog pritiska.

(lokalitet 1) i ušće Save u Dunav (lokalitet 2). Uzorkovanim jedinkama izmerene su totalna
dužina tela (TL) u mm i težina tela (W) u g, i određena im je starost očitavanjem naraštajnih
zona na krljuštima. Korelaciona i regresiona analiza odnosa totalne dužine i težine tela
kondicije (C = W/Lb x 100). Srednja dužina tela (± SD) analiziranih jedinki iznosila je 242
± 19 mm, a srednja težina (± SD) 151 ± 45 g.
alometrijski rast (a = 0.004, b = 3.26, r² = 0.90).

akumulaciji.
i zona III (donji deo akumulacije u oblasti brane). Mrežarskim alatima ulovljeno je ukupno
20 somova.
starosne klase bile jednako zastupljene (2+-7+). Sve polno nezrele jedinke su bile starosti 2+.
Som u akumulaciji Uvac dominantno naseljava gornji (kanjonski) deo, a na osnovu starosne

AB - The Velika Morava River is the greatest national Serbian river and the significant tributary of the Danube River. The major problems in the Velika Morava River Basin (VMRB) represent untreated industrial and municipal wastewaters. In this study, the level of genotoxic potential at the sites along the VMRB was evaluated by parallel in vitro and in situ approach. Within in vitro testing, genotoxicity of native water samples collected from the sites in VMRB was evaluated by SOS/umuC test on Salmonella typhimurium TA1535/pSK1002 and by the comet assay on HepG2 cells. DNA damage in situ was assessed in bleak (Alburnus alburnus) erythrocytes by the comet (alkaline and Fpg-modified comet) and micronucleus assays. Additionally, the concentration of heavy metals in fish tissue was measured and this data, compiled with the data of the physico-chemical parameters measured in water, was used as a measure of the pollution pressure at the sites. Results showed that applied in vitro tests with native water samples are less sensitive in comparison with in situ tests and should be taken with precaution when making predictions on the status of the ecosystem. Within applied battery of in situ assays differential sensitivity of assays was observed where alkaline comet assay showed the highest potential in differentiation of the sites based on genotoxic potential. Integrated biomarker response showed that usage of the battery of bioassays provides better insight in a genotoxic effects in animals, and consequently, that the holistic approach is more suitable for this type of study.

Integrated biomarker response showed that usage of the battery of bioassays provides better insight in a genotoxic effects in animals, and consequently, that the holistic approach is more suitable for this type of study.",

AB - Ispuštanje otpadnih voda u površinske vode predstavlja globalni problem jer negativno utiče na kvalitet voda, vodene organizme i zdravlje ljudi.

prikupljane u dve sezone: sezona gnežđenja (mart-jun) i jesenje-zimskom periodu (oktobarfebruar).
i Gobiidae.
2 Percidae,1 Gobiidae). Ostaci šarana su registrovani u 44 (55%) gvalica. Šaranske vrste
riba su još značajnije zastupljene u ishrani kormorana tokom sezone gnežđenja nego u
jesenjem i zimskom periodu.

AB - Metal content was evaluated in the sediment, macrophytes and fish in the Medjuvrtje reservoir (Western Serbia). Concentrations of 16 trace elements (Ag; Al; As; B; Ba; Cd; Co; Cr; Cu; Fe; Li; Mn; Ni; Pb; Sr; Zn) were analysed in the sediment, macrophytes and fish of an aquatic ecosystem. Five macrophyte species and three fish tissues (liver, muscle, gills) from five fish species (freshwater bream, common nase, Prussian carp, chub, wels catfish) were sampled and the metal content was analysed with ICP-OES. The sediment concentrations of Cu, Cd, and Zn exceeded the Canadian sediment quality guidelines while concentrations of Cr and Ni were above the Netherlands' target values. Bioaccumulation factors (BSAF) were calculated for analysed macrophytes and fish tissue. The BSAF had higher values for macrophytes for all investigated elements except for Cu and Zn; Cu had a higher value in the liver of the freshwater bream (0.823) and Zn had a higher value in the liver of freshwater bream (0.914) and chub (0.834) as well as in gills of Prussian carp (2.58) and chub (1.26). Potamogeton pectinatus, Ceratophylum demersum and the root of Phragmites communis showed higher accumulation of elements than Trapa natans and Potamogeton fluitans and the body of P. communis. The highest BSAF values for Ba, Mn, Sr and Ni were recorded in the gills. Cd and Cu had the highest BSAF values in the liver. Results confirmed that particular macrophyte and fish species could be a good indicator of reservoir water and sediment pollution.
