AB - Copper electrodeposition processes in the hydrogen co-deposition range by the pulsating current (PC) regime were examined by the determination of the average current efficiency of hydrogen evolution and by the scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis of the morphology of the formed deposits. The two sets of the square-wave PC of the same pause to pulse ratios, but with different duration of deposition pulses and pauses were analyzed. The one set of square-wave PC was with the constant pause duration and different deposition pulses. In the other set, the deposition pulse was constant while the pause duration was varied. The obtained results were compared with those obtained by electrodeposition at the constant overpotential from solutions of different CuSO(4) and H(2)SO(4) concentrations. It was found that the effect of the increasing deposition pulse was equivalent to the decreasing CuSO(4) concentration, while the effect of the decreasing pause duration was equivalent to the increasing H(2)SO(4) concentration. It is shown that it is possible to achieve a substitution of more solutions of different CuSO(4) and H(2)SO(4) concentartions by the use of the only one solution if the appropriate PC parameters were applied, what can be of high technological significance.

AB - Electrodeposition of copper by pulsating overpotential (PO) regime in the range of hydrogen co-deposition was examined by scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the increase of the pause-to-pulse ratio produced a strong effect on the morphology of electrodeposited copper. Honeycomb-like copper structures were formed with the pause-to-pulse ratios up to 5. Up to this value of the pause-to-pulse ratio, the diameter of the holes formed by attached hydrogen bubbles was decreasing, while their number was increasing by the application of PO regime. The compactness of the formed honeycomb-like structures was also increasing with the increasing pause duration. The increase of the pause-to-pulse ratio suppressed a coalescence of neighboring hydrogen bubbles. Copper dendrites in the interior of the holes and at their shoulders were formed with the higher pause-to-pulse ratios. The size of the formed dendrites, as well as their number, increased with the increasing pause duration. Depth of holes was decreasing with the increasing pause duration. The increased compactness of the obtained structures was explained by the use of a set of equations describing the effect of square-wave PO on electrodeposition process.

AB - The electrodeposition of the Fe-Ni powders from citrate-ammonium chloride containing electrolytes for different Ni/Fe ions concentration ratios at pH 4.0 was investigated by the polarization measurements. The morphology, chemical composition, and phase composition of the obtained powders were investigated using SEM, EDS, and XRD analysis. EDS analysis of as-deposited alloy powders confirmed anomalous co-deposition of Fe and Ni. A common characteristic for all as-deposited powder samples was the presence of cone-shaped cavities and nodules on the big agglomerates of the order of 200-400 mu m. After annealing in air at 400, 600, and 700 A degrees C for 3 h, all alloy powders oxidized forming NiO, NiFe2O4, and Fe2O3 phases in different proportions depending on the original powder composition. The NiFe2O4 phase was found to be dominant in the sample with the highest percentage of Fe after annealing at 600 A degrees C.

AB - The Mo-Ni-O powders were electrodeposited from ammonium sulfate containing electrolytes with different Mo/Ni ion concentration ratios. The phase composition of these powders was investigated using TEM. EDS and XRD analysis. The TEM analysis showed that two types of particles were present in the powders: amorphous and crystalline. For crystalline particles it was found that two phases, MoO3 and MoNi4 prevail in all powders, while the NiO phase was detected in the powder electrodeposited at Mo/Ni = 0.3/1. These findings are in good agreement with our previous results where MoO3, MoNi4 and NiMoO4 phases were detected in the recrystallized Mo-Ni-O powders. In this work we discovered that the NiMoO4 phase was formed by solid state reaction between NiO and MoO3 at elevated temperature.

AB - The formation of honeycomb-like structures in the pulsating overpotential (PO) regime was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The honeycomb-like structures obtained with a square-wave PO of different pause to pulse ratios were compared to the one obtained in the constant potentiostatic regime. Increasing the pause to pulse ratio led to a decrease of the diameter of the holes formed by attached hydrogen bubbles, as well as to an increase in the number of holes formed at the surface area of copper electrodes. The size of the agglomerates of copper grains, of which the walls of the holes were constructed, was reduced with increasing duration of the pause. Also, the uniformity of the honeycomb-like structures was increased by application of the PO regime. It was shown that the effects attained by application of this regime were comparable with those obtained by electrodeposition in a constant potential regime with the addition of specific additives.

AB - Electrodeposition of copper by pulsating overpotential (PO) regime in the hydrogen co-deposition range was examined by the determination of the average current efficiency of hydrogen evolution and by microscopic analysis of the morphology of the formed deposits. The techniques of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy were used for the structural analysis of the copper deposits. Honeycomb-like electrodes were formed with an amplitude overpotential of 1000 mV, a pause of 10 ms, and deposition pulses of 3, 5, 10 and 20 ms. Holes formed by attached hydrogen bubbles were surrounded by dendrites (for deposition pulses of 3 and 5 ms) or agglomerates of copper grains (for 10 and 20 ms). In an interval of deposition pulses between 3 and 10 ms, the length of deposition pulse did not affect the size, number and depth of holes. The change of morphology of copper formed around holes was discussed by the effect of quantity of evolved hydrogen on effectiveness of stirring of solution in the near-electrode layer. The application of square-wave PO with the shorter deposition pulses enabled energy savings in the production of such copper electrodes. For example, the applied deposition pulse of 3 ms enabled energy saving of about 15% in relation to the copper electrode obtained with a deposition pulse of 10 ms (for the unchanged number, size and depth of holes).

AB - The electrodeposited Cd-Co alloys were characterized by the anodic linear sweep voltammetry (ALSV) technique in the solution of 1 M NaCl (pH 2). It is shown that Cd-Co alloys could be deposited with high current efficiency (>90%) from the solution containing 0.2 M boric acid, low concentration of cadmium sulfate (0.01 M and 0.02 M) and high concentration of cobalt sulfate (0.2 M and 0.4 M) under the conditions of convective diffusion (RPM = 1000). The ALSVs were characterized by the presence of three peaks: one corresponding to the dissolution of pure Cd, one corresponding to the dissolution of pure Co and one corresponding to the dissolution of unknown phase formed in the system Cd-Co (since the phase diagram of the Cd-Co, system does not exist in the literature). Depending on the charge and on the alloy composition (amount of Cd and Co) the peak of the unknown phase can either be hardly seen, or can prevail on the ALSV. This phase is formed mainly on the account of Co, but certain limiting amount of Cd must be deposited for the unknown phase to be formed and seen on the ALSV.

AB - The Ni-Mo-O alloy powders were electrodeposited from ammonium sulfate containing electrolytes for different Ni/Mo ions concentration ratios. Electrodeposition was investigated by the polarization measurements. The morphology, chemical composition and phase composition of these powders were investigated using SEM, EDS, AAS and XRD analysis. The EDS and AAS analysis showed that the powder composition depends on the Ni/Mo ions concentration ratio, with the Ni/Mo metals ratio in the powders being the same as the one in the solution. The as-deposited alloy powders were nanocrystalline, while after stepwise annealing at 300, 400, 500 and 600 degrees C for 2 h in N-2 atmosphere their crystallinity became more and more pronounced, with the dimension of crystallites increasing with the increase of the annealing temperature. Already after the annealing at 300 degrees C the presence of two phases, MoO3 and NiMoO4, was identified by XRD, while SEM analysis showed that the surfaces of powder particles were partially recrystallized. With the increase of the annealing temperature the amount of the NiMoO4 was found to increase in all powders. For the powder electrodeposited from the solution with the highest Ni/Mo ratio (1/0.3) NiMoO4 phase was detected together with a small amount of Ni4Mo phase, indicating phase transition of MoO3 into NiMoO4 (and probably Ni4Mo) at the temperature of 600 degrees C.

AB - The electrodeposition of the Fe-Ni powders from citrate containing electrolytes for different Ni/Fe ions concentration ratios, using Fe(Ill) and Fe(II) salts at pH 4.5 and pH 4.0 respectively was investigated by the polarization measurements and cyclic voltammetry. The morphology and composition of the electrodeposited powders were investigated by SEM and EDS analysis. The EDS analysis of the alloy powders confirmed anomalous co-deposition of Fe and Ni from both solutions, with the one obtained using Fe(III) salt being more pronounced. The morphology of electrodeposited powders was found to depend on the Ni/Fe ions concentration ratio, as well as on the valence of Fe ions used. A common characteristic for all powder samples was the presence of cone shaped cavities and nodules, while for the ratio Ni/Fe = 9/1 in both electrolytes pagoda like crystals, corresponding to the FeNi3 single crystal, have been detected. In the case of Fe(III) containing electrolytes current efficiency for powder electrodeposition was very small (about 1-2%) due to the first step in the electrochemical reaction being reduction of Fe(III) into Fe(II), while in the case of Fe(II) containing electrolytes current efficiency for powder electrodeposition varied between about 15% and 8% depending on the Ni/Fe ratio.

AB - The electro deposition of the Ni-Mo-O alloy powders from ammonium sulfate containing electrolytes of different Ni/Mo ions concentration ratios was investigated by the polarization measurements. In all electrolytes similar polarization curves were obtained, characterized by two inflection points Point A, the beginning of the electro deposition process and point B, a moment when the powder electro deposition is controlled by the hydrogen bubbles formation. The morphology of the electrodeposited Ni-Mo-O alloy powders was investigated using SEM. At Ni/Mo ratios higher or equal to 1/1 two types of particles were detected in the powder deposits: spongy-type particles (100 - 200 μm) with flat nodular surface and presence of cavities and agglomerates of similar dimensions characterized by the presence of cracks and cavities, with the nodular surface that is not flat, but is covered by the freshly formed dendrites. At Ni/Mo ratios of 1/3 the contribution of the amorphous-compact deposit is significant, while on top of this deposit rounded dendritic and compact outgroths were detected.

AB - Formation of irregular deposits by electrodeposition from acid sulfate solutions of various H2SO4 concentrations was examined by the determination of the average current efficiency of hydrogen evolution and by the scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis of the copper deposits morphology. Copper dendrites were the dominant morphological form obtained at overpotentials corresponding to the plateaus of the limiting diffusion current density. The number of the formed dendrites was increasing with the decreasing H2SO4 concentration. Holes formed due to the attached hydrogen bubbles were the basic morphological form of electrodeposited copper from all analyzed copper sulfate solutions at overpotentials outside the plateau of the limiting diffusion current density. The honeycomb-like structures (holes of the detached hydrogen bubbles with cauliflower-like agglomerates of copper grains between them) were formed if electrodepositions were performed from 0.15 M CuSO4 in both 0.250 M and 1.0 M H2SO4. On the other hand, aside from the holes and cauliflower-like forms, electrodeposition from 0.15 M CuSO4 in 0.125 M H2SO4 led to the formation of degenerated dendrites and dendritic particles inside channels formed of evolved hydrogen. Holes with shoulders of degenerated dendrites were also formed. The formation of different morphological forms under hydrogen co-deposition was discussed in the terms of hydrodynamic conditions in the near-electrode layer using the values for the break-off diameter of hydrogen bubbles.
