AB - This study aimed to estimate the potential of the selected berry (strawberry) and drupe (apricot, plum and sweet cherry) fruits as the substrates for the production of new fruit wines enriched with phenolic compounds. Sweet cherry wine (cultivar Burlat) stood out both for the profound content of phenolics (followed by their chemical profile) and potent anti-DPPH radical activity. The same fruit wine samples exhibited high redox potentials, slightly lower than strawberry and plum wine samples. Therefore, sweet cherry cultivar Burlat may be well recommended for development of novel fruit-based products endowed with naturally occurring phenolics. In any case, the remaining four cultivars are also worth further research efforts, particularly apricot cultivar Keckemetska ruza, which is one of the representatives of greatly underestimated fruit type thus far as a substrate for the production of the relevant fruit wines.

AB - Introduction - Fruit and their products, including fruit wines, represent a rich source of natural bioactive compounds. This study focusing on fruit wines (prepared from commercially grown fruits by Serbian producers) has included the investigation of their chemical composition and biological activity. Materials and methods - Black chokeberry, blueberry, raspberry, blackberry and cherry were used for wine production by innovative vinification procedure, with or without using sugar and enzymatic preparation glycosidase, respectively. Selected phenolics were identified and quantified by UPLC/MS-MS analysis, while Total Phenolic Content (TPC) was determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu method. In addition to this, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and FRAP (Ferric Reducing Ability of Plasma) methods were applied for the preliminary evaluation of anti-DPPH radical activity and redox potential respectively at in vitro conditions. Results and discussion - Among the fruit wines examined within this study, the blackberry one stood out for profound FRAP (115.23 mmol L-1 Fe2+), DPPH (1.11%) and TPC values (2,395 mg GAE L-1). On the other hand, the raspberry wine showed the lowest potential towards the aforementioned parameters. Using principal component analysis, these fruit wines were chemically differentiated, according to the predominant phenolic compounds. Conclusions - All fruit wine samples displayed a good antioxidant potential with the blackberry one being most potent. Such a finding is of particular importance for Serbia as one of the leading producers of this edible fruit both in Europe and rest of the world.

AB - Samples of the selected red wine varieties grown in Montenegro (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Vranac; vintages 2010-2012) were compared according to total phenolic content, anti-DPPH radical activity, phenolic profile and elemental composition. All the samples showed profound anti-DPPH radical activity, due to high content of total phenolic compounds (R=0.92). The most abundant phenolics were catechin and gallic acid with the highest values recorded for Merlot 2012 (43.22 and 28.65mg/L, respectively). In addition to this, the content of essential elements including the potentially toxic ones was within healthy (safe) level for all the samples analysed. This study has actually pointed out Merlot wine variety as the best quality one, though all three varieties may be used as safe and health-promoting nutritional products. [GRAPHICS] .

AB - Although the second biggest terrestrial group of plants, bryophytes remain poorly known chemically compared to the angiosperms. In this article, the sugars of the moss Rhodobryum ontariense, an unstudied representative of the medicinally known genus, are reported. The chemical analysis revealed the usual plant sugar sucrose, and a new sugar, fructooligosaccharide 1-kestose, which is reported first not only for the genus Rhodobryum, but also for mosses. The trisaccharides have been scantily reported in bryophytes hitherto. This gives more significance to this study for further investigation of its role in the moss species. The health-promoting effect of 1-kestose is also briefly discussed.

AB - The chemical composition of Rhodobryum ontariense (Kindb.) Kindb. has not been previously investigated. Fatty acids of this moss were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively with an aim to identify its corresponding pattern. A total of eight fatty acids were identified including two acetylenic ones: 9,12,15-octadecatrien-6-ynoic acid (42.26%), alpha-linolenic acid (20.32%), palmitic acid (14.31%), 9,12-octadecadienoic-6-ynoic acid (13.31%), linoleic acid (5.25%), oleic acid (2.47%), stearic acid (1.14%) and gamma-linolenic acid (0.92%). To our knowledge, this is the first record of acetylenic fatty acids in the genus Rhodobryum. In general, acetylenic fatty acids vary considerably among different moss groups and have been used as a chemotaxonomic character in bryophyte classifications. Other species of Rhodobryum from Asia have been traditionally used in ethno medicine by indigenous cultures. Two fatty acids of those reported here, 9,12,15-octadecatrien-6-ynoic and alpha-linolenic acid, have known cardio protective activity, which supports respective claims of traditional herbal use of these mosses.

AB - As part of our ongoing project of new acetylcholinesterase inhibitors from lower marine and terrestrial species, a phytochemical investigation was conducted on a foliose lichen, Lobaria pulmonaria (L.) Hoffm. (Lobariaceae), from Bosnia and Herzegovina. The study led to the isolation of a mixture of acetylated depsidones which showed a moderate activity (0.5 mu g) in the acetylcholinesterase inhibition test on Thin-layer chromatography plate. Our results indicate for the first time the significance of depsidones, highly specific metabolites from lichen species, in searching for these inhibitors which still represent the best drugs currently available for the management of Alzheimer's disease.

AB - The identification of nystose and 1(F)-beta-fructofuranosylnystose in the oligosaccharide-rich fraction of the moss Rhodobryum ontariense (Kindb.) Kindb. (Bryaceae) by thin layer chromatography and high pressure chromatography with anion exchange-pulsed amperometric detector is discussed. According to our knowledge, it is the first record of these saccharides in the genus Rhodobryum as well as in the group of mosses as a whole. The findings are in good agreement with the recent isolation of 1-kestose from the same plant material and confirm that short-chain fructooligosaccharides, well known as prebiotics, are present in the examined bryophyte.

(Bryaceae) by thin layer chromatography and high pressure chromatography with anion exchange-pulsed amperometric detector is discussed. According to our knowledge, it is the first record of these saccharides in the genus Rhodobryum as well as in the group of mosses as a whole. The findings are in good agreement with the recent isolation of 1-kestose from the same plant material and confirm that short-chain fructooligosaccharides, well known as prebiotics, are present in the examined bryophyte.",

AB - The essential oil composition of the moss Rhodobryum ontariense obtained by hydrodistillation was preliminary analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Thirteen compounds (86.41% of the total oil) were identified. The main chemical constituents were phytol (31.95%) and 1-octen-3-ol (15.44%). Such an abundance of phytol has not yet been reported in other mosses. Four chemicals (cis-decahydronaphthalene, allo-hedycaryol, jasmone and 2,5,5,8a-tetramethyl-1,4,4a,5,6,7,8,8a-octahydronaphthalene-1-carboxylic acid, methyl ester) are first records, not only for the genus Rhodobryum and mosses in general, but also for the group of bryophytes as a whole.

AB - Moss species of the family Brachytheciaceae, Kindbergia praelonga (Hedw.) Ochyra and Kindbergia stokesii (Turn.) Ochyra, were preliminarily analysed for their fatty acid composition with the aim of studying the chemical relationship of these two entities. Fatty acid methyl esters were examined by GC and GC MS in their methanol extracts. Thirteen fatty acids were identified. It is likely that the mosses are chemically distinguishable and should be treated as separate entities. However, additional chemical constituents of various moss samples, such as phenolic acids, their derivatives and flavonoids, must be also analyzed in order to support the re-examination of the relationship between these two species.

AB - A total of 20 components were identified in Allium ursinum volatile oil (AUVO) by GC-MS, and 10 of them are found for the first time in this plant species. The antioxidant capacity of AUVO was examined by beta-carotene-linoleic acid bleaching, lipid peroxidation by Fenton reaction, EPR spin-probing assay using stable nitroxide radicals, DPPH., and ABTS(.+) scavenging assays. Reaction mechanism of the volatile oil components with nitroxide radicals, based on IR spectra analysis, is proposed. AUVO demonstrated poor scavenging ability against DPPH, and ABTS(.+) comparing to synthetic antioxidants BHT and trolox, while in beta-carotene-linoleic acid system AUVO showed an effect comparable to those for BHT. AUVO was also capable to scavenge stable nitroxide radicals such as water-soluble Tempone, and 7-DS and 12-DS, incorporated into the liposome membrane. Finally, AUVO increased membrane fluidity, which could be an important feature for further in vivo investigation of some disorders, such as hypertension and atherosclerosis.

AB - Rutin (1, main constituent) and two flavone C-glycosides, vitexin (2) and vitexin 2 ''-O-alpha-rhamnopyranoside (3) were isolated from the aerial parts of Onobrychis montana subsp. scardica. They were identified by H-1-NMR, C-13-NMR and UV-Vis spectroscopy (procedure with shift reagents), and high resolution ESI-MS. A relatively high content of 1 (5.27 mg/g of dry plant material), measured by HPLC, indicated O. montana subsp. scardica as a new natural source of this biologically active compound. The isolated flavonoid compounds might be of value as chemotaxonomic markers.
