AB  - In this work, we explore possible topological insulating state in bismuth doped with arsenic Bi1-xAsx. Infrared and magneto-optical spectroscopy are employed to probe the electrodynamic response of Bi1-xAsx with x = 0.01, as well as topological insulator Bi1-xSbx with x = 0.20. The spectra are reported in magnetic fields up to 18 T, and at temperatures between 10 and 300 K. The results indicate strong sensitivity of optical properties to these external stimuli in both Bi1-xAsx and Bi1-xSbx, but also some differences introduced by arsenic doping. Most notably, the field dependence of cyclotron resonance in Bi1-xAsx implies that it is due to bulk carriers, as opposed to surface carriers in Bi1-xSbx.

AB  - PbTe single crystal samples doped with Mn and Yb were grown using the Bridgman method. Far infrared reflectivity spectra were measured at room temperature for samples with different impurity concentrations (total impurity concentration Mn+Yb varied between 0.59 and 2.52 at%, while the impurity Mn/Yb ratio varied between 0 and 3.48). All samples were of the "p" type. Plasma minimum was registered for all samples and varied between 114 and 198 cm(-1) depending on the total impurity concentration and ratio. Samples with lower plasma minimum had a higher free hole mobility, with the highest value of 7000 cm(2)/Vs determined for a sample with the highest Mn/Yb ratio of 3.48 (1.67 at.% Mn and 0.48 at.% Yb).

AB  - Understanding the properties of PbTe remains in focus as enhancement of thermoelectric efficiency of this material is studied extensively. In this work single crystals of PbTe, doped with less than 2 at % Br, were synthesized using the Bridgmann technique and their thermal, electron transport and far infrared properties were studied. Thermal diffusivity was determined using the photoacoustic method with a transmission detection configuration. Electron transport was determined by Seebeck coefficient measurements. IR reflectivity measurements showed that reflectivity in the region of plasma resonance was low. Measured reflectivity diagrams were numerically analyzed - enabling calculation of the carrier concentration and mobility-and compared with the values obtained by Hall measurements.

AB  - We report the results of infrared and magneto-optical spectroscopy study on electrodynamic response of bismuth doped with 1.5% of antimony. The spectra are presented for temperatures down to 4.2 K, and in magnetic fields as high as 18 T. The results reveal strong magneto-optical activity, similar to pure bismuth, however there are some differences introduced by antimony doping. Analysis of optical functions reveals that the two type of charge carriers respond differently to external magnetic field. Finally, when the system enters the extreme quantum regime, both the inter- and intraband Landau Level transition are observed in the spectra.

abstract = "We report the results of infrared and magneto-optical spectroscopy study on electrodynamic response of bismuth doped with 1.5% of antimony. The spectra are presented for temperatures down to 4.2 K, and in magnetic fields as high as 18 T. The results reveal strong magneto-optical activity, similar to pure bismuth, however there are some differences introduced by antimony doping. Analysis of optical functions reveals that the two type of charge carriers respond differently to external magnetic field. Finally, when the system enters the extreme quantum regime, both the inter- and intraband Landau Level transition are observed in the spectra.",

Optical parameters were calculated and discussed. A local mode belonging to the GaSb rich end and two-mode behavior were observed at low temperatures.

AB  - A single crystal Bi0.9Sb0.1 ingot was synthesized using the Bridgman technique. Thermal diffusivity and electronic transport properties of single crystal cleaved plates (001) were determined from PA photoacoustic phase and amplitude spectra obtained using the photoacoustic method with a transmission detection configuration. Both the PA phase and amplitude were measured versus the modulation frequency and numerically analyzed. EDS analyses done to determine chemical composition of the studied samples as well as to check sample homogeneity. Hall effect measurements data were used for the photoacustic measurements.

Room temperature far infrared reflectivity spectra were measured for PbTe samples with Nd content in the range 0.2-0.9 at.%. Optical reflectivity in the far infrared range was measured in the temperature range between 10 and 300 K for a highly polished PbTe sample with 0.6 at.% Nd. The experimental diagrams were numerically analyzed with a fitting procedure using a modified plasmon-phonon model. Two local modes were noted and their origin was discussed. Optical electron mobility was calculated for all analyzed samples.

AB  - PbTe and Pb0.85Sn0.15Te single crystals. doped with Pd, were grown using the Bridgman method. Far infrared spectra were measured in the temperature range between 10 K and 300 K. The experimental spectra were numerically analyzed using first the Kramers-Kronig method and then a fitting procedure, based on the plasmon-phonon interaction model, and the optical parameters were calculated. Since the electronic structure of the ionized state for Pd, Ni and Pt is of the same type, and the influence of cl-shells is very strong, special attention was paid to the influence of the electronic structure of dopants on the final properties PbTe and PbSnTe crystals.

Local modes were determined at about 260 cm(-1) and 480 cm(-1) for PbTe doped with Cr and at slightly higher frequencies for PbSnTe doped with Cr. The origin of the local modes was discused about the possible application of the PbSnTe + Cr alloys.

AB  - Single crystal samples of lead telluride doped with Gd were grown using the Bridgman method. Far infrared reflectivity spectra in the temperature range from 10 K to 300 K were measured. The experimental diagrams were numerically analyzed using a fitting procedure based on the plasma-phonon interaction model and the optical parameters were determined, while two local modes of gadolinium were observed at about 155cm(-1) and 230cm(-1) at room temperature. The origin of these local vibrational impurity modes was discussed.

The measured infrared spectra were fated using a modified plasmon-phonnon interaction model with two additional oscillators (at about 195 cm(-1) and 285 cm(-1)) representing local B-impurity modes. The obtained results were compared with previously published data for a single crystal PbTe sample doped with boron.

NiO single crystals were prepared using the Verneuil method and were easily cleaved parallel to the (100) plane. All samples were of the p type. Atomic force microscopy images of cleaved NiO samples were made enabling a view of steps along the (001) direction and terraces, which were between 20 nm and 100 nm thick.
