AB - Mixtures of BaCO3, ZnO and TiO2 powders, with molar ratio of 1:2:4, were mechanically activated for 20, 40 and minutes in a planetary ball mill. The resulting powders were compacted into pellets and isothermally sintered at 1250 degrees C for 2h with a heating rate of 10 degrees C/min. X-ray diffraction analysis of obtained powders and sintered samples was performed in order to investigate changes of the phase composition. The microstructure of sintered samples was examined by scanning electron microscopy. The photoacoustic phase and amplitude spectra of sintered samples were measured as a function of the laser beam modulating frequency using a transmission detection configuration. Fitting of experimental data enabled determination of photoacoustic properties including thermal diffusivity. Based on the results obtained correlation between thermal diffusivity and experimental conditions, as well the samples microstructure characteristics, was discussed.

AB - Starting mixtures of ZnO, TiO(2) and MgO (0, 1.25 and 2.5 wt.% MgO) powders were mechanically activated for 15 min in a planetary ball mill. The powders obtained were sintered non-isothermally to temperatures between 800 and 1100 degrees C and then held at those temperatures for 120 min. Analysis of the influence of MgO addition on the synthesis of zinc-titanate ceramics showed that its addition increased slightly the temperature at which the reaction process started, accelerated the reaction and resulted in higher sample densities. These results were correlated with the results of structural characterization using X-ray powder diffraction method and SEM analysis. Also, the results of electric resistivity, capacitance and loss tangent of the sintered samples were obtained.

AB - The evolution of structural-morphological characteristics of ZnO + 1 wt.% MnO2 and ZnO + 10 wt.% MnO2 samples during prolonged mechanical treatment (MT) was investigated by X-ray, AFM, LPS, SEM and IR methods. Changes in crystallite size due to mechanical activation were determined from X-ray measurements. These results were correlated with changes in particle size followed by SEM and AFM. Particle and aggregate size distributions were determined from LPS measurements. Interpretation of the evolution of IR-absorption peaks during mechanical activation using the theory of average dielectric constants enabled analysis of changes of particle and agglomerate shapes. All these results enabled establishment of a relationship between crystallites, particles, aggregates of particles, and superficial processes that occur during mechanical activation.

AB - Photoacoustic phase and amplitude spectra of YBa2Cu3O7-delta samples synthesised 18 years ago were measured and numerically analysed. The value of thermal diffusivity obtained on the aged samples was lower than the values obtained for fresh samples. Far infrared spectra of YBa2Cu3O7-delta samples synthesised 18 years ago were recorded and analysed enabling determination of reflectivity peak phonon frequencies present at room temperature. X-ray diffraction analysis and far infrared reflectivity measurements enabled determination of a slight change of the oxygen content with time. The YBa2Cu3O7-delta samples synthesised 18 years ago still remained superconducting, which was confirmed by resistivity measurements of the samples between 50 K and room temperature where the critical temperature was reduced from 93 to 73 K. Atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray microanalytical measurements were also performed confirming the composition of the sample.

Fotoakustični (FA) fazni i amplitudski spektri sinterovanih uzoraka snimljeni su u funkciji čopovane frekvencije upotrebljenog laserskog zračenja (crveni laser snage 25 mW, λ = 632 nm) u toplotno-transmisionoj konfiguraciji. Teorijska analiza eksperimentalnih rezultata FA merenja na osnovu Rosencwaig-Gersho termalno-klipnog modela omogućila je izračunavanje toplotne difuzivnosti, D T (m2s-1), difuzionog koeficijenta manjinskih slobodnih nosilaca, D (m2s-1) i optičkog apsorpcionog koeficijenta (m-1).
AB - In this paper the changes that occurred in differently activated ZnO-SnO2 and sintered samples were investigated using photoacoustic spectroscopy. ZnO and SnO2 powders, mixed in the molar ratio 2:1, were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill for 10-160 min. The mixtures were pressed and isothermally sintered at 1300 °C for two hours. X-ray diffraction analysis of the obtained sintered samples was performed in order to investigate changes of the phase composition and confirmed only the presence of a pure zinc stannate (Zn2SnO4) phase in all the sintered samples as a result of the solid state reaction and reaction sintering between the starting ZnO and SnO2 powders. The microstructure of the sintered samples was examined by scanning electron microscopy and showed that mechanical activation leads to the formation of a structure with reduced particle size which accelerates spinel formation. Grain growth of the spinel phase slows down the densification process and together with the agglomerates formed during mechanical activation causes the appearance of a porous microstructure. The photoacoustic (PA) phase and amplitude spectra of the sintered samples were recorded as a function of the chopped frequency of the laser beam used (red laser with a power of 25 mW, λ=632 nm) in a thermal-transmission detection configuration. PA experimental data were analyzed using the Rosenzweig-Gersho thermal-piston model, which enabled determination of the thermal diffusivity DT (m2s-1), diffusion coefficient of the minority free carriers D (m2s-1) and the optical absorption coefficient (m-1). The detected differences of the measured thermal-electrical properties of the obtained Zn2SnO4 ceramics indicate changes in the material induced by the different preparation procedure of the starting powders before the sintering process.

AB - Far-infrared reflection spectra of sintered alpha-MnSe were measured at room temperature. The measured spectrum had one pronounced peak in accordance with literature data and group theory estimation and one smaller peak resulting from the applied sintering procedure. The measured reflection spectrum was analyzed using Kramers-Kronig analysis and a three-component effective medium model based on Bruggeman's theory assuming the presence of a small amount of pores, dominant crystalline grains and intergranular material. In the model the crystalline grains were modeled as a single oscillator appropriate to the single crystal and the intergranular material was also defined as a single ionic oscillator.

abstract = "Far-infrared reflection spectra of sintered alpha-MnSe were measured at room temperature. In the model the crystalline grains were modeled as a single oscillator appropriate to the single crystal and the intergranular material was also defined as a single ionic oscillator.",

AB - The sintering behavior of BaTiO3 with LiF showed that it was possible to sinter barium titanate at temperatures below 1000 degrees C. Different combinations of the sintering powders were prepared by adding 1 to 5 w% LiF and sintering at the temperature of 950 degrees C for 20 hours. The grain growth of LiF fluxed BaTiO3 was studied, and electron microscopy was used to investigate and characterize the microstructure of the samples. The dielectric constant and dielectric losses were determined. It was shown that the composition of the liquid phase formed during this process had a prominent influence on the grain growth and on the formation of BaTiO3 with better dielectric properties.
