AB - In this paper two methods of preparation of yttrium orthovanadate nanopowders were presented: Solid State Reaction (top - down approach) and Solution Combustion Synthesis (bottom - up approach). For starting structural characterization, X - Ray Powder Diffraction (XPRD) and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) were used. We report the change in reflection spectra in europium doped YVO4 nanopowders with comparison to its bulk analog. In UV-Vis reflection spectra we consider the change in values of band gap in these structures, after resizing it from bulk to nanomaterial. In Far - Infrared (FIR) reflection spectra, we registered the existence of Surface Optical Phonon (SOP) and different multi - phonon processes which alter the reflection spectra of bulk YVO4 . The influence of Eu ions is reflected through multi - phonon processes that occur and are connected with energy transfer from YVO4 lattice to Eu ions. All IR spectra were modeled using classical oscillator model with Drude part added which takes into account the free carrier contribution. Since our samples are distinctively inhomogeneous materials, we use Effective Medium theory in Maxwell Garnett approximation to model its effective dieletric function.

AB - In this paper, we describe synthesis and characterization of YVO4 and Eu3+-doped YVO4 nanopowders. Two methods of preparation were used-solution combustion synthesis (SCS) and classical ceramic method (CCM)-and compared. Morphology and structure of all samples were characterized with atomic-force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Raman spectroscopy was used to discuss the isotope-like effect. It is confirmed that doping with Eu ions results in a change of Raman spectra of doped samples-new modes arise, and intensity of existing ones change. Influence of different preparation methods on isotope-like effect is presented with detailed calculations of shifted modes.

AB - One-dimensional (1D) TiO2 nanotubes perpendicular to the substrate were obtained by electrochemical oxidation of titanium foil in an acid electrolyte. In order to alter the crystallinity and the morphology of films the as-anodized amorphous TiO2 nanotube films were sintered at elevated temperatures. The evolution of the morphology was visualized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while the crystalline structure was investigated by Xray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The chemical composition was studied by Xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The effects of crystallinity and morphology of TiO2 nanotube (NTs) films on photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) in an aqueous solution under UV light irradiation were also investigated. The TiO2 nanotubes sintered at 650 degrees C for 30 min had the highest degree of crystallinity and exhibited the best photocatalytic activity among the studied TiO2 nanotube films.

AB - Visible-light active mesoporous N,S-doped and co-doped anatase TiO2 powders were synthesized by non-hydrolytic sol-gel route, starting from TiCl4 and Ti((OPr)-Pr-i)(4) dissolved in cyclohexane or dimethyl sulfoxide, later used as a S-doping agent. After drying in an inert atmosphere, the gels were annealed at 500 degrees C for 3 h, in air or ammonia flow, later used for N-doping. The undoped titania powder, obtained by annealing in air of the cyclohexane-based gel, was also annealed in ammonia to deduce which method is more efficient for N-doping: gel or powder annealing. The post-annealing in air after annealing in ammonia was optimized to attain the best photocatalytic activity for dye degradation under simulated visible light. The size of anatase nanocrystals decreased by doping and the specific surface area of the powders increased. The XPS analysis confirmed a successful substitution of Ti4+ by S(4+) and/or S(6+), which caused a very small band-gap narrowing. The gel annealing in ammonia was much more efficient for interstitial nitrogen incorporation in TiO2 lattice than the powder annealing. The annealing in ammonia of the gel synthesized with dimethyl sulfoxide provided the highest visible-light activity owing to high specific surface area, appropriate mesoporosity and high photoabsorption due to efficient N,S co-doping.

AB - Thick films using starting nanopowders of TiO2 (anatase 99.7%) and alpha-Fe2O3 (hematite) mixed in the weight ratios 60:40 and 40:60 for thick film paste were fabricated by screen printing technology on an alumina substrate. Samples were sintered at temperatures of 800-950 degrees C for 60 min. Structural and electronic properties were analyzed by XRD and SEM analysis, UV/vis spectroscopy and current voltage analysis in view of potential application as gas sensors and anodes in photoelectrochemical cells for hydrogen generation and water splitting. XRD analysis showed that at 800 degrees C monoclinic pseudobrookite formed and anatase had transformed into rutile. Increase in sintering temperature lead to a gradual transformation of monoclinic pseudobrookite into the orthorhombic phase. SEM analysis showed that a homogenous small grain structure was obtained especially in the case of thick film samples with the 40:60 ratio of starting anatase and hematite sintered at 850 degrees C.

AB - A simple ball milling/thermal treatment procedure was applied to obtain fine thermistor powders. Three different powder compositions were analyzed-Cu0.2Ni0.5Zn1.0Mn1.3O4, Cu0.25Ni0.5Zn1.0Mn1.25O4 and Cu0.4Ni0.5Mn2.1O4. XRD analysis showed that all three powder compositions had a cubic spinel structure. Correlation between the sintering temperature, structure and resulting electrical properties was analyzed on bulk samples. Thick film pastes were composed and segmented thick film thermistors were screen printed on alumina, dried and fired. SEM analysis revealed a typical dendrite structure with small grains and a developed surface area. Thick film sheet resistance was measured on a test matrix and the resistance decreased with increasing Cu content. The temperature dependence of sample resistance was measured in a climatic chamber enabling calculation of the material constant and activation energy. Aging of the obtained segmented thermistors was analyzed and the resistivity drift was 0.23% for the Cu0.2Ni0.5Zn1.0Mn1.3O4 NTC thick film thermistor confirming greater stability of thermistors containing Zn and Cu that in combination with the determined good thermistor characteristics make them good candidates for temperature and heat loss sensor applications.

AB - The Zn-Mn alloy electrodeposition on a steel electrode in chloride electrolyte was investigated with the aim of obtaining deposits with as high as possible Mn percent. It was found that the deposition current density and concentration of Mn2+ ion in the chloride electrolyte significantly affect the Mn content in the alloy coating as well as the coating surface morphology. There was a transition from dendritic and spongy to smooth, bright, and amorphous structure of Zn-Mn deposits, when some critical deposition current density was reached, probably due to the metal oxyhydroxide inclusion in the coatings. Several plating additives were tested in order to decrease the hydroxide content and to improve surface appearance of the deposits. The 4-hydroxy-benzaldehyde was found to decrease oxygen and increase Mn percent in the coatings, and to significantly improve their surface morphology.

AB - Mixtures of BaCO3, ZnO and TiO2 powders, with molar ratio of 1:2:4, were mechanically activated for 20, 40 and minutes in a planetary ball mill. The resulting powders were compacted into pellets and isothermally sintered at 1250 degrees C for 2h with a heating rate of 10 degrees C/min. X-ray diffraction analysis of obtained powders and sintered samples was performed in order to investigate changes of the phase composition. The microstructure of sintered samples was examined by scanning electron microscopy. The photoacoustic phase and amplitude spectra of sintered samples were measured as a function of the laser beam modulating frequency using a transmission detection configuration. Fitting of experimental data enabled determination of photoacoustic properties including thermal diffusivity. Based on the results obtained correlation between thermal diffusivity and experimental conditions, as well the samples microstructure characteristics, was discussed.

AB - The effects of Zn-doping on the dielectric behavior and electrical properties of bulk alpha-Fe2O3 have been studied. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the presence of two phases in all samples: hematite and spinel ZnFe2O4, with the amount of spinel phase increasing with increasing Zn content. Scanning electron microscopy analysis combined with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy showed that the Zn-bearing phase occurred in the form of individual spinel ZnFe2O4 grains in a hematite matrix. DC conductivity was measured in the temperature range 25-225 degrees C (298-498 K). Impedance spectroscopy measurements in the same temperature range were carried out in the frequency range 100Hz to 10 MHz. Increase in the Zn content resulted in increased electrical conductivity and higher values of the dielectric constant. The resistance and capacitance of grains and grain boundaries were analyzed by modeling the experimental results using an equivalent circuit.

AB - Due to its outstanding electrical characteristics, such as the low temperature expansion coefficient, low dielectric constant and good mechanical properties, cordierite, 2MgO center dot 2Al(2)O(3)center dot 5SiO(2), is a very attractive high-temperature ceramic material. In order to accelerate the process of sintering, 2.50 mass% Bi2O3 has been added to the starting mixtures. Liquid phase sintering caused by the presence of bismuth-oxide lowers the temperature of cordierite formation. The mechanical activation of the starting mixtures (0-56 min in vibro-mill) additionally lowers sintering temperatures. The sintering process was performed at 1200, 1300, 1350 and 1400 degrees C, for 2 h. The particle size analysis (PSA) was employed in order to determine the changes in the particle size of the mechanically treated powders. The phase composition of the starting powders and sintered materials was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction method. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used in the analysis of the powder morphology.

AB - Starting mixtures of ZnO, TiO(2) and MgO (0, 1.25 and 2.5 wt.% MgO) powders were mechanically activated for 15 min in a planetary ball mill. The powders obtained were sintered non-isothermally to temperatures between 800 and 1100 degrees C and then held at those temperatures for 120 min. Analysis of the influence of MgO addition on the synthesis of zinc-titanate ceramics showed that its addition increased slightly the temperature at which the reaction process started, accelerated the reaction and resulted in higher sample densities. These results were correlated with the results of structural characterization using X-ray powder diffraction method and SEM analysis. Also, the results of electric resistivity, capacitance and loss tangent of the sintered samples were obtained.

AB - The aim of this work was analysis of isothermal sintering of zinc titanate ceramics doped with MgO obtained by mechanical activation. Mixtures of ZnO, TiO2 and MgO (0, 1.25 and 2.5%) were mechanically activated 15 minutes in a planetary ball mill. The powders obtained were pressed under different pressures and the results were fitted with a phenomenological compacting equation. Isothermal sintering was performed in air for 120 minutes at four different temperatures. Structural characterization of ZhO-TiO2-MgO system after milling was performed at room temperature using XRPD measurements. DTA measurements showed different activation energies for pure and doped ZnO-TiO2 systems. Thus addition of MgO stabilizes the crystal structure of zinc titanate.

AB - The aim of this work was to prepare lanthanum nickel oxide (LaNiO3, LNO) thin films of different morphology and orientation. The precursor solutions were prepared by a chemical method from citric salts of lanthanum and nickel. Films were deposited using spin-on technique on Si (10 0) substrates. Tailoring of the films orientation and morphology has been attained through two thermal treatment processes with different heating 9 devices: tubular furnace (process 1) and hot plate (process 2). Films were annealed at 600 and 700 degrees C, with heating rates: 20 degrees C/min (process 1) and I degrees C/min (process 2). Annealing times were from 30 min to 20 h. LNO films were characterized by AFM and X-ray diffraction analysis. Depending on the heating process applied, the obtained films showed very different structures, from completely amorphous to well crystallized and highly oriented. Films treated by process I were polycrystalline, had smaller oval grains and lower roughness parameters than films heated on a hot plate. Due to the low heating rate and heating from the substrate side, films obtained through process 2 were highly (I 10) oriented with elongated grains aligned along one direction.
