AB - Rising demands for renewable energy sources have led to the development of dye sensitized solar cells. It is a challenge to find a good and low cost sensitizer, which has a low environmental impact. In this work, we conducted spectroscopic and electrochemical experiments, as well as quantum-chemical calculations of the natural pigment hypericin, in order to provide insight into its sensitizing efficiency. To this end, three identical cells were made and characterized. Although this pigment exhibited good adsorption onto a semiconductor surface, a high molar absorption coefficient (43700 L mol(-1) cm(-1)) and favorable alignment of energy levels and provided a long lifetime of electrons (17.8 ms) in the TiO2 photoanode, it was found that the efficiency of hypericin-sensitized solar cells was very low, only 0.0245%. We suggest that this inefficiency originated from a low injection of electrons into the conduction band of TiO2. This conclusion is supported by the density functional theory calculations which revealed a low electron density in the anchoring groups of electronically excited hypericin. The results of this work could be valuable not only in the photovoltaic aspect, but also for application of hypericin in medicine in photodynamic therapy.

AB - Metastable nanopowder ZnTiO3 was pressed into cylindrical compacts at 200 MPa. Compacts were treated by conventional heating with isothermal holding at 931 degrees C for 10 minutes, 25 minutes and 40 minutes. ZnTiO3 compacts were also heated with a two-step sintering schedule with maximal 913 degrees C and isothermal holding at 896 degrees C, for approximately the same holding times as the isothermal schedule. Shrinkage during heating was monitored with a dilatometric device, while microstructure was determined with atomic force microscopy. XRD patterns were collected for the most interesting samples. Microstructures of sintered specimens showed differences introduced during the last sintering stage by the two different heating schedules. Goal of the presented work was to discuss the possible sintering mechanisms for the two step sintering schedulle according to the presented results.

AB - ZnTiO3 nanopowder as a constitutive component in compact production was primarily characterised. Scanning electron micrographs of as received powder were recorded. Mercury porosimetry and nitrogen adsorption were also performed on loose powder. Particle size distribution in a water powder suspension was determined with a laser particle size analyser. Compaction was performed on different pressures in a range from 100 to 400 MPa using the uniaxial double sided compaction technique without binder and lubricant. Micrographs of compacted specimens were obtained using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Pore size distribution was also determined by mercury porosimetry and nitrogen adsorption. Results revealed that with increasing pressure during compaction interagglomerate pores diminish in size until they reach some critical diameter related to the intra-agglomerate pore size.

AB - Single crystal samples of PbTe doped with PbI2 were made using the Bridgman technique. Far infrared reflectivity diagrams of PbTe doped with 0.4 at% and 0.6 at% Iodine were measured and numerically analyzed. A plasma resonance at about 650 cm(-1) with the reflectivity minima very close to zero was observed for both samples. Thermal diffusivity was determined for the same samples using the photoacoustic method with a transmission detection configuration and the values of the minority free carrier (holes) mobility were calculated.

AB - Multipolar anisotropy was induced in strontium hexaferrite green samples in a high intensity magnetic field during feedstock injection by PIM (powder injection molding) technology. Strontium hexaferrite particles in the melted feedstock were multipolarly aligned into four semi-circular paths that were circularly closed through a multipolar electromagnet. After debinding (with acetone and thermally) and sintering (optimized to obtain maximal values of the (BH)max product), samples were multipolarly magnetized again to form four poles on the outer surface of the sample. Multipolar anisotropy of the samples was observed and analyzed in detail by SEM and AFM (crystalline alignment) and by MFM (magnetical alignment).

AB - The morphology of perovskite LaNiO3 (LNO) thin films is a very important feature considering the fact that they could be used as an electrode material in ferroelectric devices. In this work, LNO films were prepared from citrate precursors. The films were deposited on Si (100) and Pt covered Si substrates [Pt (111)/Ti/SiO2/Si] Using the spin-on technique. The phase composition of the films was confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction analysis, while the microstructures were investigated by atomic force microscopy. The influence of the metal ion:citric acid:ethylene glycol ratio on the morphology of the films was investigated. After optimization of these parameters, very homogenous, uniform and crack-free LNO films were obtained.

After optimization of these parameters, very homogenous, uniform and crack-free LNO films were obtained.",

To obtain epitaxial or highly oriented films, the deposited layers were slowly heated in a gradient thermal field, with a heating rate of 1 degrees min(-1), and annealed at 700 degrees C. The influence of different substrate orientations on the thin film morphology was investigated using atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. Well-crystallized films with grains aligned along a certain direction were obtained on both substrates. Films deposited on both substrates were very smooth, but with a different grain size and shape depending on the crystal orientation. Films deposited on Si (100) grew in the (110) direction and had elongated grains, whereas those on Si (111) grew in the (211) direction and had a quasi-square grain shape.

AB - We used an atomic force microscope to image cell wall isolated from needles of Serbian spruce tree and that synthesized from cell wall components. We also observed the structure of lignin model polymer (DHP), as a best substitute for the natural lignin. A tendency of aggregate formation was observed in all samples. Cell wall was revealed as a laminated fibrous structure. General organization is similar in both isolated and synthesized cell wall samples, with dominating globular motifs arranged regularly as rods and forming cavities. The synthesized cell wall has a more regular structural organization than isolated cell wall. The dimensions of individual globular aggregates and pores differed between the two samples. DHP showed a similar, regular organization, with globular aggregates and holes. Globules and pores are smaller in size than the corresponding structures in both the isolated and synthesized cell walls. Such modular organization of cell walls may have a physiological role in response to the external mechanical stress caused to plant cells.

AB - The aim of this work was to prepare lanthanum nickel oxide (LaNiO3, LNO) thin films of different morphology and orientation. The precursor solutions were prepared by a chemical method from citric salts of lanthanum and nickel. Films were deposited using spin-on technique on Si (10 0) substrates. Tailoring of the films orientation and morphology has been attained through two thermal treatment processes with different heating 9 devices: tubular furnace (process 1) and hot plate (process 2). Films were annealed at 600 and 700 degrees C, with heating rates: 20 degrees C/min (process 1) and I degrees C/min (process 2). Annealing times were from 30 min to 20 h. LNO films were characterized by AFM and X-ray diffraction analysis. Depending on the heating process applied, the obtained films showed very different structures, from completely amorphous to well crystallized and highly oriented. Films treated by process I were polycrystalline, had smaller oval grains and lower roughness parameters than films heated on a hot plate. Due to the low heating rate and heating from the substrate side, films obtained through process 2 were highly (I 10) oriented with elongated grains aligned along one direction.

AB - The modified polymeric precursor method (Pechini method) was successfully used for the preparation of epitaxial and polycrystalline ferroelectric Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O-3 (PZT) thin films. Films were deposited on LaNiO3 (LNO) - coated silicium (1 0 0) and platinum substrates (Pt (1 1 1)/Ti/SiO2/Si) by spin coating technique. LNO electrodes were also prepared by the Pechini method and treated under different thermal treatment conditions to obtain films with different structural and microstructural properties. Investigation of PZT microstructure was performed as a function of orientation and morphology of the bottom electrode, as well as of thermal treatment conditions. Grain size and morphology were analyzed by AIM, while the quality and orientation of PZT films were determined by GIXRD analysis. It has been found that the proposed thermal treatment on a hot plate, with slow heating rate and long annealing time, can result in the formation of epitaxial PZT films on Si and LNO-coated Si substrates.

AB - Lanthanum nickel oxide (LaNiO3) is an electrically conductive ceramics, which has a potential use as electrode for ferroelectric thin films, multilayer actuators and many other electronic devices. In this work, LaNiO3 thin films were prepared by a modified Pechini process, based on polymeric citrate precursors. DTA analysis of the precursor solution showed that formation and crystallization of LaNiO3 were completed up to 790 degrees C. Films were deposited using spin-on technique and thermally treated in temperature range 600-800 degrees C, with heating rate of 1 degrees/min. Processing parameters, such as concentration and annealing temperature, as well as number of deposited layers were optimized to achieve desired film quality. The structure of LaNiO3 was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis, whereas microstructural parameters, such as grain size and roughness, were analyzed by AFM.

AB - A mixture of starting ZnO and SnO2 powders (molar ratio 2: 1) were mechanically activated for 10, 40, 80 and 160 min in a planetary ball mill and then isothermally sintered at 1300 degrees C for 2 h in order to obtain Zn2SnO4 ceramics. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed single-phase polycrystals. Far infrared reflection spectra were measured (100-1400 cm(-1)). The same oscillators were observed, but the highest intensity of reflectivity peaks was obtained for the powder activated 10min and it gradually decreased with longer times of mechanical activation. This is in agreement with microstructure analvsis where longer times of mechanical activation lead to increased porosity and defects. Using group theory six ionic oscillators were calculated for single crystal Zn2SnO4 Spectra, but two more oscillators were observed in the obtained experimental spectra, which Could be the result of mechanical activation and sintering. The FIR experimental results were numerically analyzed and oscillator parameters were calculated.

AB - Room temperature far infrared reflectivity spectra of single phase spinel zinc-stannate thin films, prepared by rf magnetron sputtering on a glass substrate, and bulk sintered samples were measured. The sintered samples were obtained by mechanical activation of starting ZnO and SnO2 powders for 10 min followed by sintering at 1300 degrees C for 2 h. The reflectivity diagrams obtained for bulk samples were numerically analyzed using the four-parameter model of coupled oscillators. The optical parameters were determined for six observed ionic oscillators belonging to the spinel structure and two additional oscillators originating from the sintering procedure resulting from pores and grain boundaries. The reflectivity diagrams obtained for thin film samples were analyzed using the four-parameter model for optical phonons with a standard optical multi-layer technique.

AB - Far infrared reflection spectra of NiO polycrystals sintered at 1100 degrees C for various times (30-240 min) were measured at room temperature using a FTIR Spectrometer-Brucker 113V. The measured spectra depended on the sintering time due to differences in the microstructural morphology of the material and were compared with the NiO single crystal reflectivity diagram. Numerical analyses of the experimental spectra were performed using Kramers-Kronig analysis, a four-parameter model of coupled oscillators and the effective medium modeling theory. In the three-component effective medium model based on Bruggeman's theory we assumed the presence of pores, intergranular material and crystalline grains. The intergranular material and crystalline grains were defined as single and coupled ionic oscillators.

AB - Thin films of single-phase zinc-stannate (Zn2SnO4) were grown by rf magnetron sputtering onto glass substrates. Transmission in the visible range was measured allowing determination of the energy gap and thickness of analyzed thin film samples using interference fringes. The photoacoustic phase and amplitude spectra of all samples were measured as a function of the laser beam modulating frequency using a transmission detection configuration. Fitting of experimental data enabled calculation of thermal diffusivity, the coefficient of minority carrier diffusion, their mobility and lifetime.

AB - The possibility of characterization of aluminium powders using a horizontal coherer has been considered. Al powders of known dimension were treated with a high frequency electromagnetic field or with a DC electric field, which were increased until a dielectric breakdown occurred. Using a multifunctional card PC-428 Electronic Design and a suitable interface between the coherer and PC, the activation time of the coherer was measured as a function of powder dimension and the distance between the coherer electrodes. It was also shown that the average dimension of powders of unknown size could be determined using the coherer.

Al powders of known dimension were treated with a high frequency electromagnetic field or with a DC electric field, which were increased until a dielectric breakdown occurred.
