AB - Mixed spinel ferrites MgxNi1-xFe2O4 were synthesized via sol-gel combustion synthesis with citric acid as fuel, followed by calcination at 700 °C for 3 hours. Obtained powders were characterized via X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), X-ray photoelectron (XPS), FTIR and Raman spectroscopy and FESEM microscopy. Elemental composition was examined via energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Humidity sensing properties were tested by measuring AC impedance in a climactic chamber at 25 °C and in the relative humidity range of 40–90%. Temperature sensing properties were tested by measuring DC resistance at 40% RH in the temperature range 40–90 °C. Synthesized powders were proven to be pure spinel Fd 3m phase with spherical, slightly agglomerated particles. Substitution of Mg with Ni results in structural changes such as a change in inversion parameter and particle agglomeration, which influences sensing properties of the material. Results show that the sensing properties of magnesium ferrite can be improved by incorporating 10% of nickel in the spinel lattice structure. Mg0.9Ni0.1Fe2O4 exhibited higher temperature sensitivity and higher sensitivity towards humidity compared to MgFe2O4, while further substitution of Mg with Ni resulted in the decline of sensing properties, increase in particle size and agglomeration degree.

AB - Problems that countries all over the world have in common are dependence of economy and energy production on fossil fuels. There is a growing need for energy production and storage routes that are safe for the environment, renewable, efficient and cheap. One of the directions in which science is moving forward is discovering materials suitable for use in batteries and supercapacitors to improve their operating potential, electrical capacity or biocompatibility. The objective is also to synthesize materials for batteries or supercapacitors that are cheap, consist of earth abundant elements and have high electrochemical activity. In this work, mixed nickel-magnesium ferrites NixMg1−xFe2O4, with x being 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9 and 1, were synthesized via sol-gel combustion synthesis with citric acid used as fuel and nitrate ions used as oxidizing agents. Combusted powders were calcined at 700 °C. The structure and morphology of the powders were characterized with X-ray diffraction method (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. The band gap was calculated by using UV/Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). Samples were cast on nickel foam and tested as energy storage materials in a three-electrode setup in 3 M KOH aqueous solution as electrolyte. The methods used were cyclic voltammetry (CV) and constant current chronopotentiometry to obtain galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) curves. Results show that all of the synthesized materials show battery-type charge storage in alkaline electrolyte due to the formation of metal cation oxyhydroxides. With increasing nickel content, electrochemical activity drops. The highest value of capacity, 34.3 mA h g-1 at the current density of 500 mA g-1 is ascribed to magnesium ferrite, MgFe2O4.

AB - Nickel manganite nanocrystalline fibers were obtained by electrospinning and subsequent calcination at 400 degrees C. As-spun fibers were characterized by TG/DTA, Scanning Electron Microscopy and FT-IR spectroscopy analysis. X-ray diffraction and FT-IR spectroscopy analysis confirmed the formation of nickel manganite with a cubic spinel structure, while N-2 physisorption at 77 K enabled determination of the BET specific surface area as 25.3 m(2)/g and (BJH) mesopore volume as 21.5 m(2)/g. The material constant (B) of the nanocrystalline nickel manganite fibers applied by drop-casting on test interdigitated electrodes on alumina substrate, dried at room temperature, was determined as 4379 K in the 20-50 degrees C temperature range and a temperature sensitivity of -4.95%/K at room temperature (25 degrees C). The change of impedance with relative humidity was monitored at 25 and 50 degrees C for a relative humidity (RH) change of 40 to 90% in the 42 Hz pi 1 MHz frequency range. At 100 Hz and 25 degrees C, the sensitivity of 327.36 +/- 80.12 k omega/%RH was determined, showing that nickel manganite obtained by electrospinning has potential as a multifunctional material for combined humidity and temperature sensing.

AB - Nanostructured Fe2TiO5 (pseudobrookite), a mixed metal oxide material holds significant promise for utilization in energy and environmental applications. However, its full application is still hindered due to the difficulty to synthesize monophasic Fe2TiO5 with high crystallinity and a large specific surface area. Herein, Fe2TiO5 nanofibers were synthesized via a versatile and low-cost electrospinning method, followed by a calcination process at different temperatures. We found a significant effect of the calcination process and its duration on the crystalline phase in the form of either pseudobrookite or pseudobrookite-hematite-rutile and the morphology of calcined nanofibers. The crystallite size increased whereas the specific surface area decreased with an increase in calcination temperature. At higher temperatures, the growth of Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles and simultaneous coalescence of small particles was noted. The highest specific surface area was obtained for the sample calcined at 500 degrees C for 6 h (S-BET = 64.4 m(2) g(-1)). This work opens new opportunities in the synthesis of Fe2TiO5 nanostructures using the electrospinning method and a subsequent optimized calcination process for energy-related applications.

AB - The aim of this work was to synthesize semiconducting oxide nanoparticles using a simple method with low production cost to be applied in natural sunlight for photocatalytic degradation of pollutants in waste water. Iron titanate (Fe2TiO5) nanoparticles with an orthorhombic structure were successfully synthesized using a modified sol-gel method and calcination at 750 degrees C. The as-prepared Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles exhibited a moderate specific surface area. The mesoporous Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles possessed strong absorption in the visible-light region and the band gap was estimated to be around 2.16 eV. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue under natural sunlight. The effect of parameters such as the amount of catalyst, initial concentration of the dye and pH of the dye solution on the removal efficiency of methylene blue was investigated. Fe2TiO5 showed high degradation efficiency in a strong alkaline medium that can be the result of the facilitated formation of OH radicals due to an increased concentration of hydroxyl ions.

AB - This work deals with our continued research of oxide materials for potential application in gas/humidity sensing. We have made thick film samples using iron manganite powder synthesized by a so/-gel combustion method with a net-like structure, by screen printing on alumina substrate with PdAg interdigitated electrodes. The thick film samples were fired at two temperatures 600 and 800 degrees C. The powder morphology was retained and only the organic compounds in the paste were burnt-out at 600 degrees C, while at 800 degrees C the thick film surface morphology was different where grain growth and individual particles can he observed, We measured complex impedance in a temperature and humidity chamber at room temperature (25 degrees C) in the relative humidity range 30-90% and frequency 100 Hz 1 MHz. The thick, film surface morphology has a significant influence on the effect of humidity on complex impedance. The complex impedance of thick films fired at 600 degrees C was high and did not decrease noticeably with increase in relative humidity (M., except for RH 80 and 90%, while thick film samples fired at 800 degrees C had an overall lower impedance that reduced more noticeably with increase in RH 40-70% and even more for RH 80 and 90%.

AB - Nanocrystalline Zn2SnO4/SnO2 powder was obtained by a solid state reaction of ZnO and SnO2 nanopowders mixed in the molar ratio 1:1. The phase composition of the obtained powder was studied by XRD and Raman spectroscopy, morphology and texture were characterized by FESEM, TEM, BET and Hg porosimetry, while XPS and FTIR spectroscopy were used to determine the surface chemistry. The influence of humidity on complex impedance was monitored on bulk samples in the relative humidity (RH) range 30-90% in a climatic chamber in the frequency range 42 Hz- 1 MHz at working temperatures of 25 and 50 degrees C. Change in RH had a significant influence on impedance reduction, especially noticeable in the lower frequency range, indicating potential application of this nanocomposite as a humidity sensing material. Increase in RH led to an increase in AC conductivity that changed with frequency according to the Jonscher power law. The frequency exponent decreased with increase in RH and sample temperature indicating that the correlated hopping barrier model is the dominant conduction mechanism. Complex impedance was analyzed using an equivalent circuit consisting of a parallel resistance and constant phase element, showing the dominant influence of grain boundaries at both working temperatures (25 and 50 degrees C). The resistance decreased, while the capacitance and relaxation frequency increased with increase in RH. At high humidity an added Wartburg element enabled modeling of the charge diffusion process.

AB - The sol-gel combustion method was applied for synthesis of spinel magnesium cobalt ferrites CoxMg1-xFe2O4, with varying cobalt and magnesium content, x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9. Magnesium nitrate, cobalt nitrate and iron nitrate were used as oxidizers and citric acid was used as a reducing agent. Structural and morphological properties of the obtained ferrite powders were investigated and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Optical properties were investigated by UV-VIS spectrophotometry. A cubic spinel structure with multigrain agglomerates formed. Visible light photocatalytic activity of the spinel ferrite powder samples was evaluated by measuring the rate of photodegradation reaction of methylene blue (MB). After 240 min Co0.1Mg0.9Fe2O4 showed the best rate of photodecomposition of MB resulting in 90% of its initial concentration in an alkaline environment.

All ferrite powders consisted of multigrain agglomerates. Optical properties were investigated by UV- vis spectrophotometry. The photocatalytic activity of as prepared samples was evaluated by measuring the rate of photodegradation reaction of methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation. After 240 min, compared to other samples, the sample labeled as Co0.1Mg0.9Fe2O4 showed the best rate of photodecomposition of MB resulting in reduction of 90% of its initial concentration.

AB - In this study, pseudobrookite (Fe2TiO5) nanoparticles were fabricated by a modified sol-gel method using Fe(NO3)39H2O and Ti(OC3H7)4 as starting reagents and ethanol as solvent. Oxalic acid was used as a chelating agent while cetyltrimethyammonium bromide (CTAB) and citric monohydrate were used as surfactants. Structral and morphological characterization using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) analysis confirmed the formation of pseudobrookite nanoparticles. As synthetized Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles were utilized as photocatalysts for decolorisation of Methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation. It was observed that the adsorption of MB onto Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles is strongly dependent on the solution pH. Maximum decolorozation was observed for Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles prepared with CTAB under alcaline conditions (pH=10.5).

AB - Zinc ferrite nanocrystalline powder was obtained by solid state synthesis of starting zinc oxide and hematite nanopowders. Field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the formation of nanocrystalline zinc-ferrite powder with a mixed spinel structure with small amounts of remaining zinc oxide and hematite as impurities. Thick film paste was formed and screen printed on test interdigitated PdAg electrodes on alumina substrate. Formation of a porous nanocrystalline structure was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and Hg porosimetry. Humidity sensing properties of zinc ferrite thick films were investigated by monitoring the change in impedance in the relative humidity interval 30%-90% in the frequency range 42 Hz-1 MHz at room temperature (25 degrees C) and 50 degrees C. At 42 Hz at both analyzed temperatures the impedance reduced 46 times in the humidity range 30%-90%. The dominant influence of grain boundaries was confirmed by analysis of complex impedance with an equivalent circuit.

AB - Titanium dioxide is a photocatalyst, known not only for its ability to oxidize organic contaminants, but also for its antimicrobial properties. In this article, significant enhancement of the antimicrobial activity of TiO2 (up to 32 times) was demonstrated after its activation by ball milling. The antimicrobial activity was analyzed for one fungal and 13 bacterial ATCC strains using the microdilution method and recording the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values. In order to further investigate the correlation between the mechanical activation of TiO2 and its antimicrobial activity, the structure, morphology and phase composition of the material were studied by means of Electron Microscopy, X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements. UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra were recorded and the Kubelka-Munk function was applied to convert reflectance into the equivalent band gap energy (E-g) and, consequently, to investigate changes in the E-g value. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to analyze the influence of mechanical activation on the Ti 2p and O 1s spectra. The presented results are expected to enable the development of more sustainable and effective advanced TiO2-based materials with antimicrobial properties that could be used in numerous green technology applications.

AB - Pseudobrookite based nanopowder was obtained by solid state synthesis of starting hematite and anatase nanopowders in the weight ratio 55:45. Structural and morphological properties were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, UV/Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirming the formation of nanocrystalline pseudobrookite. The obtained powder was mixed with a binder (ethyl cellulose), dispersant (α-terpinol) and adhesion agents (acetic acid and distilled water) to obtain a thick film paste. It was screen printed on alumina substrate with interdigitated PdAg electrodes and fired at 600 °C for 30 min. Formation of a porous nanocrystalline thick film structure was shown using Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while Hall measurements enabled determination of carrier mobility. Change of impedance response in the frequency range 42 Hz–1 MHz with humidity was analyzed at room temperature (25 °C) and 50 °C in the relative humidity range 30–90% and 40–90%, respectively. At 42 Hz, and room temperature the impedance reduced ∼28 times, while at 50 °C it reduced ∼147 times in the relative humidity range 40–90%. The sensor showed rapid response (16 s) and relatively low hysteresis (8.39% at 25 °C and 2.64% at 50 °C) showing that this is a promising material for application in humidity sensing.

AB - Pseudobrookite nanocrystalline thick films were screen printed on alumina substrate with small interdigitated PdAg electrodes (width 6 mm, length 12 mm, electrode spacing 0.2 mm) and fired at 600 degrees C for 30 minutes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the thick film surface confirmed the formation of a porous structure consisting of agglomerated nanocrystalline grains of pseudobrookite. Impedance response of pseudobrookite thick film samples was measured in a humidity chamber at operating temperatures of 25 and 50 degrees C in the relative humidity (RH) range 40-90% and frequency range 42 Hz-1 MHz. At the lowest frequency of 42 Hz at 25 degrees C the impedance reduced. 7 times (from 35.74 MO for RH 40% to 4.91 MO for RH 90%) and at 50 degrees C. 33 times (from 30.98 MO for RH 40% to 0.944 MO for RH 90%). Low hysteresis (1.82 and 3.65%) was obtained at 25 and 50 degrees C, respectively. Complex impedance was analyzed using an equivalent circuit consisting of parallel impedance and constant phase (CPE) element showing the dominant influence of grain boundaries.

abstract = "Pseudobrookite nanocrystalline thick films were screen printed on alumina substrate with small interdigitated PdAg electrodes (width 6 mm, length 12 mm, electrode spacing 0.2 mm) and fired at 600 degrees C for 30 minutes. Complex impedance was analyzed using an equivalent circuit consisting of parallel impedance and constant phase (CPE) element showing the dominant influence of grain boundaries.",

The obtained powder was mixed with a binder (ethyl cellulose), dispersant (alpha-terpinol) and adhesion agents (acetic acid and distilled water) to obtain a thick film paste. It was screen printed on alumina substrate with interdigitated PdAg electrodes and fired at 600 degrees C for 30 min. Formation of a porous nanocrystalline thick film structure was shown using Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while Hall measurements enabled determination of carrier mobility. Change of impedance response in the frequency range 42 Hz-1 MHz with humidity was analyzed at room temperature (25 degrees C) and 50 degrees C in the relative humidity range 30-90% and 40-90%, respectively. At 42 Hz, and room temperature the impedance reduced similar to 28 times, while at 50 degrees C it reduced similar to 147 times in the relative humidity range 40-90%. The sensor showed rapid response (16 s) and relatively low hysteresis (8.39% at 25 degrees C and 2.64% at 50 degrees C) showing that this is a promising material for application in humidity sensing.

AB - One-dimensional (1D) TiO2 nanotubes perpendicular to the substrate were obtained by electrochemical oxidation of titanium foil in an acid electrolyte. In order to alter the crystallinity and the morphology of films the as-anodized amorphous TiO2 nanotube films were sintered at elevated temperatures. The evolution of the morphology was visualized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while the crystalline structure was investigated by Xray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The chemical composition was studied by Xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The effects of crystallinity and morphology of TiO2 nanotube (NTs) films on photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) in an aqueous solution under UV light irradiation were also investigated. The TiO2 nanotubes sintered at 650 degrees C for 30 min had the highest degree of crystallinity and exhibited the best photocatalytic activity among the studied TiO2 nanotube films.

AB - The scope of this work was observing dimensional and heat transfer changes in ZnTiO3 samples during heating in nitrogen and air atmosphere. Interactions of bulk specimens with gaseous surrounding induce microstructure changes during heating. Sintered ZnTiO3 nanopowder samples were submitted to subsequent heating. Dilatation curves and thermogravimetric with simultaneous differential thermal analysis TGA/DTA curves were recorded. Reheating was performed in air and nitrogen atmospheres. Reheated samples obtained at different characteristic temperatures in air were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Microstructures obtained by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of reheated sintered samples are presented and compared. Reheating in a different atmosphere induced different microstructures. The goal was indicating possible causes leading to the microstructure changes.
